Chapter 33 - The Invitation

The last day of the school week, Friday, arrived with a soft, warm glow across the sky. As the sun rose over Dasmariñas, the morning air felt noticeably lighter and warmer, carrying a gentle hint that the cool morning chill was ending and summer was just around the corner.

For Tristan, this Friday brought a completely different kind of warmth and quiet excitement. The plan he had been carefully thinking about all week was finally ready: today, he was going to walk up to Christine in the school canteen and invite her to join their study group.

He woke up at six o'clock without needing an alarm, feeling a surprising sense of calm inside his chest. A few weeks ago, the mere thought of walking up to Christine would have made his stomach twist in knots. But now, after days of mental preparation and physical training, a steady, grounded confidence had settled over him.

Tristan swung his legs over the edge of his bed and sat up. With a simple thought, he called up his internal Basketball System display. The familiar, glowing blue screen hovered quietly in his mind:

Name: Tristan

Title: Floor General (In-Training)

Speed: 35

Agility: 30

Stamina: Boosted

Equipped Skill Badges: Acrobat (Bronze)

Current Mission: Mission 5 — Qualify for the Next Round (Win at least 2 games in the league stage or face System Deletion).

Tristan stared at the bold red text of System Deletion for a moment. Tomorrow was Saturday, the day of their second official league game against the White Sharks and their star center, Cedrick Estrella. The Black Mambas needed to win at least two games in this group stage to survive. If they lost, his system would be erased forever. Furthermore, Coach Gutierrez, the head basketball coach of Dasmariñas National High School, had told them on Tuesday that he would be sitting in the bleachers on Saturday to watch them play. If they played well and passed their fourth periodical exams in March, all ten Black Mambas would be invited to try out for the official school varsity team.

The stakes were huge, but Tristan didn't feel afraid. He felt like a point guard standing at center court, looking at the defense and knowing exactly which play to call. He was no longer just a timid boy with a crush; he was a leader with a clear mission, a solid plan, and a purpose.

He quickly dressed in his gray running shirt and black shorts, lacing his sneakers tightly. Stepping outside into the warm morning air, he jogged down the street to their usual meeting spot near the barangay hall concrete court.

Marco and Gab were already waiting under the shade of a large tree. Marco was stretching his arms with an eager grin, while Gab was leaning against a wall, fanning himself with his hand.

"Morning, guys," Tristan said, his voice bright and full of energy as he jogged up to them. "Ready for our morning run?"

"Man, the sun is getting serious today, huh?" Marco said, wiping a small bead of sweat from his forehead. "It feels like summer is already here."

"Yeah," Gab agreed, stretching his back with a slow yawn. "I can't wait for summer break. No school, no homework, just playing basketball all day long."

Tristan laughed softly, shaking his head. "We still have to survive the fourth periodical exams first, Gab. Let's get our three kilometers in so we can stay fresh for tomorrow's game against the White Sharks."

The three friends started their morning jog through the quiet neighborhood streets. The warm breeze blew against Tristan's face as his shoes tapped steadily against the asphalt. With his upgraded Speed of 35 and boosted Stamina, the three-kilometer run felt light and easy. His body moved smoothly, his breath remaining steady and controlled.

As they ran side by side, they talked about their defensive strategy for Saturday's game. They reviewed how Joshua and Felix would team up to box out Cedrick Estrella under the rim, and how John and Mark would space the floor on offense to give Tristan room to drive.

After finishing their run, they shared high-fives and headed back to their homes. Tristan took a long, warm shower that washed away his sweat and relaxed his muscles. He put on his clean, ironed school uniform—a white button-down shirt with the Dasmariñas National High School emblem and dark navy blue trousers. He grabbed his school bag and stepped out into the bright morning sunshine.

He met Marco and Gab at their usual street corner, and the three of them walked to school together. The streets of Dasmariñas were bustling with Friday morning traffic. Jeepneys roared past, tricycles beeped their horns, and vendors sold warm bags of pandesal bread on every corner.

When they stepped onto the grounds of Dasmariñas National High School, the campus was alive with excitement. Students walked in groups along the concrete pathways, laughing and talking about their weekend plans. But everywhere you looked, students also carried review sheets and notebooks, preparing for the fourth periodical examinations scheduled for the second week of March.

The morning classes flew by in a fast blur of lectures, textbook readings, and chalkboard notes. Tristan listened closely during English and History, but whenever there was a quiet pause in class, his thoughts kept drifting back to his plan for lunch break. He repeated the words in his head, making sure his message was simple, polite, and clear.

When the noon bell rang out across the school, signaling the start of the lunch break, the entire school erupted into noise. Students flooded out of the classrooms and headed toward the noisy school canteen.

Tristan, Marco, and Gab walked into the canteen, where the air was thick with the appetizing smells of fried chicken, pork adobo, savory lumpia, and warm rice. They bought their lunch plates, pork adobo with extra rice and cold cups of iced tea and looked around the crowded room for a place to sit.

Near the middle of the canteen, sitting at a long wooden table with three of her female classmates, was Christine. She was wearing her neat white uniform, smiling and talking quietly with her friends while holding a small juice box. She looked calm, cheerful, and bright in the middle of the noisy canteen crowd.

As soon as Tristan spotted her, his heart gave a sudden, firm thud against his ribs. A slight rush of nervous energy washed over him, but he took a deep, controlled breath, using his Floor General mental discipline to steady his nerves.

He turned to Marco and Gab. "Hey, guys," Tristan said, keeping his voice low and steady. "I'm going to go talk to her now."

Gab gave him a warm, confident nod. "You got this, Tris. Just be yourself. Be the same calm leader you are on the basketball court."

Marco gave him a enthusiastic thumbs-up, a wide grin spreading across his face. "Go get 'em, Captain! We'll be right here at this table cheering for you!"

"Thanks, guys," Tristan said with a small smile.

Tristan turned around and began walking across the busy canteen toward Christine's table. Every step felt deliberate and purposeful. He kept his posture straight, his shoulders broad, and his hands relaxed at his sides. He wasn't rushing, nor was he hesitating.

When he reached her table, Christine was just setting her juice box down. She noticed someone standing nearby, looked up, and her dark eyes met Tristan's. A look of quiet surprise touched her face, followed instantly by a warm, genuine smile.

"Oh, hi, Tristan!" Christine said softly, her voice pleasant and clear above the canteen noise. "How are you?"

"Hey, Christine," Tristan replied. His voice quavered slightly for a fraction of a second, but he quickly caught it, keeping his tone firm, polite, and calm. "Do you have a minute to talk?"

Christine's friends at the table stopped talking and looked up at Tristan with curious smiles, but Christine simply nodded kindly. "Sure, Tristan! What's on your mind?"

Tristan looked directly into her eyes, his determination hardening. "Well, as you know, the fourth periodical exams are coming up in March. Ms. Budbud reminded us that they're really important for our final grades. My friends and I were talking, and we decided to form a study group so we can prepare properly."

He paused for a second, keeping his composure steady. "We know you're always on the honor roll and that you're one of the smartest students in our batch. We thought it would be really great if you'd be interested in joining our study group. You could help us understand the tough topics in Science and Math, and we could all review together so we can pass these exams as a team."

A quiet, thoughtful silence fell over the table for a moment. Christine looked at Tristan, her eyes showing a mix of gentle surprise and warm intrigue.

"A study group?" Christine repeated, her melodic voice full of interest. "You guys want me to join your study group?"

Tristan nodded firmly, a confident, modest smile appearing on his face. "Yeah. We all want to do well on these final exams. If we study together, we can cover all the chapters, test each other, and make sure nobody falls behind. We'd really love to have you with us."

Hearing his clear, honest words, a bright, beautiful smile spread across Christine's face. "I'd love to join you guys!" she said warmly. "Honestly, that's such a great idea, Tristan. It's much better to review together than to stare at thick textbooks alone at home. When do we start?"

Hearing her say yes so easily made the last lingering bit of tension in Tristan's chest vanish instantly, replaced by a deep wave of calm triumph.

"This Sunday," Tristan said, his voice low, excited, and clear. "We're going to hold our first review session this Sunday at three-thirty in the afternoon at the quiet study tables near the town library. And we can keep meeting every Sunday after that until the exams start in March."

Christine grinned widely and nodded her head. "That sounds perfect! Sunday at three-thirty at the library study tables. I'll make sure to bring my Science and Math notebooks. I'll see you Sunday, Tristan!"

"Thanks, Christine. See you on Sunday!" Tristan said with a warm smile.

He turned around and walked back across the canteen toward the table where Marco and Gab were waiting. As he walked, he felt a wave of pure relief and satisfaction washing through his entire body. He had set a goal, executed his plan smoothly, and achieved total success.

When he sat down at the table, Marco and Gab immediately leaned forward, their faces glowing with excitement.

"Dude!" Marco whispered loudly, slapping his hand onto the table. "She smiled the entire time! Did she agree to the schedule?!"

"She said yes!" Tristan confirmed, a bright, triumphant grin breaking across his face. "She's joining our study group this Sunday at three-thirty, and every Sunday after that until exams are over!"

Gab threw his hands up in the air with a happy laugh. "Unbelievable! Our point guard does not miss! We actually have a study group with the smartest girl in school!"

"Great job, Tris," Marco said, clapping Tristan on the back. "You spoke like a real leader out there!"

Tristan picked up his fork and began eating his pork adobo, feeling happier than he had felt all week. He had secured a study partner who could help them pass their exams, brought his friends closer to their academic goals, and taken a major step forward in his personal life.

The afternoon classes passed in a pleasant, happy blur. Tristan listened to his teachers, but his mind felt light and confident. Every time he looked toward the front of the room and saw Christine taking notes, he felt a quiet sense of satisfaction knowing that their Sunday study sessions were officially locked into their schedules.

At exactly 3:00 PM, the final bell of the school day rang out cheerfully, signaling the end of the school week.

Students cheered and packed their bags, eager to enjoy their Friday afternoon. Tristan, Marco, and Gab met up with the rest of the Black Mambas, Joseph, Felix, Mark, John, Kyle, Joshua, and Ian, near the front gates of the school.

Together, the ten teammates walked off campus and headed toward their second home: the concrete basketball court near the barangay hall.

The court looked peaceful and beautiful under the warm late afternoon sun. Golden sunlight streamed through the surrounding trees, casting long shadows across the concrete floorboards. The court was their sanctuary, a place away from school stress, exam worries, and personal doubts. Here, on this floor, they were warriors preparing for battle.

"Alright, Mambas!" Tristan called out as the team set their backpacks down on the wooden bleachers. "Tomorrow is the big day! We play against the White Sharks at two-thirty in the afternoon at the Barangay Burol II gym. Coach Gutierrez will be in the stands watching us, and we need this win to secure our spot in the tournament!"

"HELL YEAH!" the team shouted together.

"Today's practice is going to be a light, sharp pre-game walkthrough," Tristan explained, stepping onto center court. "We aren't going to tire out our legs. We are going to review our execution, sharpen our passing lanes, and lock down our defensive communication for tomorrow!"

For the next hour, the Black Mambas ran through a crisp, highly organized practice session.

They worked extensively on their defensive game plan against the White Sharks' heavy center, Cedrick Estrella. Joshua positioned himself in the low post, using his wide frame to practice boxing out, while Felix practiced dropping down quickly from the high post to double-team whenever the ball was passed inside.

On offense, Mark and Tristan practiced running fast breaks, using their quick ball movement to push the ball down the floor before the White Sharks' heavy defense could set up. Whenever the defense collapsed inside, Tristan used his Floor General vision to locate John standing open on the wing, whipping sharp chest passes for easy spot-up three-pointers.

Tristan also practiced his own offensive moves, testing his upgraded Speed of 35 and Acrobat badge. He executed smooth crossover dribbles at the top of the key, exploded past imaginary defenders, and glided through the air to finish soft, high-arching layups off the glass.

Every player moved with purpose, focus, and chemistry. There were no missed assignments or sloppy passes. They moved as one single unit, their shared energy buzzing across the court.

At four-thirty PM, Tristan called the team together at center court for their final huddle before tomorrow's big game.

"Awesome walkthrough today, everyone," Tristan said, looking at the sweaty, smiling faces of his nine brothers. "We have our game plan, we have our strategy, and we have each other. Get a great night's sleep, eat a good dinner, and I'll see all of you at the gym tomorrow at one-thirty PM!"

All ten players stacked their hands together in the center of the huddle.

"Mambas on three!" Marco shouted loudly. "One! Two! Three!"

"MAMBAS!" all ten voices roared in unison, their powerful shout echoing off the nearby houses and ringing through the warm afternoon air.

The players gathered their sports bags, shared high-fives, and began walking home in small groups.

Tristan walked home alone as the Friday evening sun began to set over Dasmariñas. The sky turned into a gorgeous blend of deep purple, soft pink, and warm gold. A cool evening breeze rustled through the roadside trees, cooling Tristan's warm skin as his sneakers clicked rhythmically against the pavement.

As he walked, Tristan reflected on how much his life had changed over the past few weeks. Not long ago, he was a quiet, unnoticed boy sitting on the bench, full of self-doubt and fear. But now, he was the captain of an incredible basketball team, a Floor General with upgraded system abilities, a student with a clear plan to pass his exams, and a leader who had successfully invited the girl he liked to a weekly study group.

When he arrived home, he ate a hearty, healthy dinner with his family, taking time to chat with his parents about his week. Afterward, he took a long, relaxing shower, laid out his clean red-and-black Black Mambas jersey and basketball shoes for tomorrow's game, and packed his water bottle in his sports bag.

At nine-thirty PM, Tristan climbed into bed. The bedroom was dark and peaceful, with soft silver moonlight filtering through his window curtains.

He lay back against his soft pillow, staring quietly at the ceiling. In his mind, he reviewed the White Sharks' defensive patterns, reminding himself to stay patient, trust his teammates, and play with confidence from the very first whistle.

He knew tomorrow's game against Cedrick Estrella would be tough. He knew the threat of System Deletion was still real, and that the path to surpassing Aiden Robinson was long and full of obstacles. But as Tristan closed his eyes, he felt no fear, anxiety, or doubt.

He had a clear plan. He had a strong purpose. He had a team of brothers standing by his side, a study group set for Sunday with Christine, and a fierce, unquenchable fire burning inside his heart. He was Tristan, the Floor General of the Black Mambas, and the Black Mambas never backed down.

With a peaceful, confident smile on his face, Tristan fell into a deep, restful sleep, his dreams filled with glowing textbook pages, cheering crowds, and the sweet, perfect sound of a basketball swishing through the net. He was ready for tomorrow.
