Chapter 95 - Chapter 95 - The Spirit Who Chose Her Form

Ren Zu appeared at the peak of one of the three mountains surrounding the Elevated Phoenix Valley, the highest among them, whose top was flat, covered only by emerald-green moss and some wild flowers that seemed to glow with residual spiritual energy. He walked to the edge and sat cross-legged on the cold ground, his dark robes being blown by the wind.

With a casual gesture of his right hand, he withdrew something from his spatial ring. A bottle of wine appeared between his fingers: translucent black glass, sealed with red wax. He broke the seal with his thumb, the strong and sweet aroma of ancient wine spreading through the air, a mixture of rare fruits, nectar from thousand-year-old flowers, and a subtle trace of vital energy that made the wine glow faintly when swirled.

He brought the bottle to his lips and took a long, slow sip.

His black eyes fixed on the distant horizon, where the sun was beginning to set behind the mountains, tinting the sky in shades of orange and violet.

The valley below him seemed small, almost insignificant, a green speck in the midst of a world he hadn't even fully explored....

"In this life, I hope to become the true moon, rising above the mountains and the skies, playing with the clouds and the seas, following the ancient times and walking in the darkness above the various heavens...."

A soft murmur escaped his lips, which curved into a thin smile.

Ren Zu felt an anticipated relief that was hard to put into words.

With the conclusion of all his plans in the Profound Sky Continent, he would soon return to the Illusory Demon Realm.

And with that... he would finally rid himself of the "greatest trash under the heavens," Yun Che, and could go on with his life without that constant worry weighing on his mind. At some point, he realized how paranoid he had become about it, devoting excessive attention to something that, deep down, was too insignificant to justify such obsession. And although he had already decided not to get tied up in that matter again, as he had promised himself in the Ancestral Crow Ancestral Land, only now did he feel that this shadow was truly beginning to dissipate....

Since he was reborn in this world, he had strived not to let himself be influenced by the hatred of someone who already knew the story of that trash. He tried in every way to see himself as a real person from this world, not as a reader observing everything from the outside, but in the end, he hadn't managed to accomplish that as well as he imagined....

It was like being forced to live with someone whose mind you had already read completely, every twisted thought, every sick impulse, every atrocity he had committed or would still commit. It was like knowing, with absolute certainty, all the crap that person had already done and all the crap they would still do if left free. And then, suddenly, you find yourself living in the same world as them... breathing the same air, walking the same places, knowing exactly what they're capable of.

How could you not hate someone like that?

It was like sharing a house with a time bomb whose workings you understand better than anyone. It wasn't gratuitous hatred; it was founded repulsion, preventive aversion, a self-preservation instinct that screamed inside you because it knew the monster before it had even revealed itself to others.

That was the feeling he had upon being reborn in this world and knowing about his current identity.

Now, however, he felt nothing about it anymore. Even so, he knew he needed to eliminate that trash. Not out of resentment, but because it was a tedious yet inevitable task, something he needed to do to live in peace. He knew Yun Che too well, knew what a disgusting person he was, and understood that his own life would never be peaceful as long as that worm continued breathing, especially considering his current position as the adopted son of his parents, which technically made him his brother....

Even being far from the Illusory Demon Realm, he had no difficulty imagining Yun Che's behavior. Knowing that trash, it was certain he would have tried to make a good impression in front of his wife, as he always did with any woman he met, only to be coldly ignored. And, very likely, he wouldn't have resisted casting those perverted eyes at her that he thought were discreet. If she had beaten him for it, it wouldn't be surprising at all; and she only wouldn't have killed him out of respect for his parents.

He knew Yun Che must be corroding with envy. He was the type of worm who thought he was the center of the world, someone incapable of accepting that another person, especially someone younger, could achieve a higher position or superior status than his. For someone as arrogant as him, that must have been like a stab to his pride...

Only a stupid person would choose to live with that kind of person.

That was why he had to deal with him permanently...

Ren Zu took another sip of the wine and tilted his head slightly back, letting the wind from the peak mess up his black hair while an ironic smile curved his perfect lips, a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"If I lack even this small ambition, what's the point of being human? Failure isn't a problem; just try again several times. Even if I don't achieve my goals in the end, so what?"

Shaking his head, he was about to take another sip when he felt a familiar presence materializing beside him.

He turned his face slowly.

Beside him, floating slightly above the emerald-green moss, was a young girl whose beauty was perfect, definitely an enchanting existence that made people emotional. She was an absurdly stunning woman who made all men want to embrace her.

Her skin was white as the deepest winter snow, with a subtle rosy glow emanating from it like internal warmth, making anyone who saw her want to touch it, just to confirm if it was real. Her face was perfect: large, bright eyes with black pupils that seemed to contain rivers of stars swirling slowly, deep and captivating like abysses that promised sweet drowning. Beneath them, a delicate nose; below, a small, soft, and rosy mouth, whose lips stretched into a subtle smile that was at once innocent and extremely seductive.

Her black hair cascaded over her snow-white shoulders, seductive and fluid, as if woven from liquid night. Her figure was perfect: full and voluptuous breasts, a perky and round bottom, a slim waist, long and straight legs, smooth as silk—the body of a woman who seemed sculpted to be desired. Her dress was special, woven with black feathers of unknown origin, extremely beautiful, that moved as if alive. The dress was short, revealing snow-white shoulders at the top and long, impeccable legs below. The alternation between deep black and pure white made her look like a fairy from a forbidden dream. Her beauty was suffocating, the kind that made the air seem heavier, the heart race without permission.

Beautiful. She was extremely beautiful.

Ren Zu looked to the side, the bottle of wine still in his hand, and raised an eyebrow with mild curiosity.

"Jiayue... what are you doing here?"

His voice came out calm, almost casual, as if he were asking about the weather. But there was a trace of genuine amusement in his black eyes.

The unparalleled beauty beside him was Hei Jiayue, the "Spirit" of the [Evil Infant's Wheel of Myriad Tribulations]. In the last few weeks, since he had been feeding that Heavenly Profound Treasure daily with his negative emotions, she had recovered a considerable portion of her power. Enough to assume an adult spiritual form, not a random one, but exactly the one he preferred, since he was her "absolute master." Because of that, she ended up taking an absurdly specific appearance: very similar to a certain Milady Queen, one of the most striking figures from his favorite novels in his past life... and, for a long time, his great "literary love"....

Obviously, she had asked for his opinion on what appearance she should assume, and he basically gave her limited access only to that in his memories. Anyway, he was her eternal master, so it was all fine....

Technically, she was already a woman before. Nothing fundamental had changed in that. The only real difference was that now she had chosen a spiritual body that would undoubtedly be irresistibly coveted by him. And it was precisely because of that that he always found that event so amusing. It had been completely unexpected... but, ironically, too perfect to seem like a coincidence.

Moreover, because of the form she chose, he felt that only beauties declared like Shen Xi and Qianye Ying'er could compare to her. Unfortunately, even the Little Demon Empress and Feng Xue'er seemed inferior in the face of that absurd level of beauty. Xia Qingyue was just a thread below as well... although, in her case, there was still the detail that she hadn't fully matured.

Of course, he was making this comparison only in terms of general appearance, in a cold and superficial way.

Because, for him, his wives would always be the most beautiful women in the world.

And he wasn't lying.

After all, when you genuinely love someone, even a face that could be considered "less impressive" by the rest of the world becomes perfect in your eyes, not by illusion... but because the feeling completely changes the way you see them.

However, Hei Jiayue had also assumed a completely captivating personality and, ironically, perfectly compatible with the appearance she had chosen. It was as if she hadn't just taken that form... but had also absorbed the charm, posture, and even the temperament of the woman she was imitating.

From what he noticed, she chose to act a bit like the Little Demon Empress....

She floated a little closer, the black feather dress rippling softly like crow wings. The wind from the peak played with her black hair, and for a moment, she looked exactly like an empress fallen from the sky; proud, dangerous, too beautiful to exist in the mortal world.

Then she crossed her arms, raised her chin, and spoke, with an expression that feigned indifference, but with a strange gleam in her eyes:

"This Queen happened to see you here, drinking alone, like a poor wretch abandoned by the world..." She looked away as if that were too obvious: "I felt pity. So... this Queen decided to come keep you company. Consider it an honor."

Ren Zu raised an eyebrow, his black eyes shining with genuine amusement. He lowered the bottle of wine slowly, tilting his head to the side as he observed her. A sigh escaped his lips, long and exaggerated, as if he were dealing with a stubborn child.

"Ah, Jiayue... if you keep treating me like a 'poor wretch,' I'll have to seal you in a dark cave for a few billion years. That way, you'll learn not to meddle in someone else's solitude."

He said this with a casual tone, but there was a malicious gleam in his eyes, testing her limits as he always did since she assumed this more adult form and didn't stay as a child like before....

Hei Jiayue blinked, her large eyes widening in pure shock. The air around her seemed to tremble slightly, as if her soul were about to abandon her body.

"W-what?! Seal this Queen?! In a cave?! For billions of years?!"

Her voice, which moments before was that of an unshakeable empress, broke into a high-pitched and desperate tone. She floated closer to him, her small and delicate hands grabbing the sleeves of his dark robes like a spoiled child begging for sweets.

"Master, no! Please, don't do that! This Queen couldn't bear it! I... I just wanted to stay with you, don't abandon me like this! I promise, I'll be good, I won't call you a fool anymore, just... just don't seal me, okay? Pretty please?"

Her perfect face flushed a deep pink, and she leaned forward, her voluptuous breasts pressing lightly against his arm as she blinked her moist eyes, acting like a bratty little girl seeking affection. All her queenly pose evaporated in an instant, replaced by an adorable and exaggerated vulnerability, with her lips trembling in an irresistible pout....

Ren Zu couldn't hold back a low, genuine, and affectionate laugh. He extended his free hand, gently stroking her silky black hair, his fingers tracing a soft path along her rosy cheek.

"Calm down, Jiayue. I was just kidding. I wouldn't do something like that to you. You know I value your company... more than I admit...."

His touches were soft, caring, as if he were soothing a wild beast or, in her case, a tsundere queen with a soft heart. He pulled her lightly closer, letting her nestle against his shoulder, the sweet aroma of her spiritual presence mixing with that of the ancient wine.

But the instant the words "kidding" left his mouth, her mood changed like a gale. Hei Jiayue pulled away abruptly, crossing her arms over her full breasts and puffing out her cheeks in an expression of feigned or not-so-feigned anger: "Kidding?! This Queen almost had a breakdown because of you, you heartless idiot! How dare you play with the feelings of an empress like me? I should seal you in a cave! Hmph! I thought about giving you company out of pity, but now I see you don't deserve even a second of my precious time!"

She turned her face to the side, her black hair whipping dramatically in the wind, but her eyes flicked back to him sidelong, filled with a deep and genuine feeling that couldn't be explained in mere words.

"And don't think you calmed me down with those cheap caresses! This Queen is above that... but... hmph, if you insist on apologizing properly, maybe I'll forgive you. You lucky fool...."

Ren Zu let out a light sigh, as if dealing with an inevitable disaster. He completely ignored her theatrical show, not out of contempt, but because he already knew every step of that "tsundere storm" better than anyone.

With a lazy movement of his wrist, he reached into his spatial ring.

Two small cups appeared between his fingers.

He placed one of them beside Hei Jiayue, right in the exact direction where the wind wouldn't knock it over, as if he didn't even need to look to know where to position it.

"Drink." His voice came out low. "And stop making a scene."

Hei Jiayue widened her eyes.

"M-making a scene?!" She pointed to herself as if she had been insulted in front of an entire army. "This Queen never makes a scene! This Queen—"

Ren Zu stared at her.

Just a look.

And her throat locked up.

"...Hmph."

She grabbed the cup as if accepting alms from an unworthy mortal, turned her face with absolute superiority, and took a short sip... but her eyes softened a bit when the wine touched her tongue.

And there was something in it... something that reminded her of the taste of loneliness before her master welcomed her and gave her a new life.

She feigned contempt.

But she drank a little more.

Ren Zu filled his own cup and drank slowly, without haste, looking at the sky painted in violet and orange.

Hei Jiayue drank in small sips, trying to keep her face impassive.

But his presence beside her... made her soul quiet.

After some time, Ren Zu spoke, without changing his tone:

"...Do you think people's opinions matter, Jiayue? I'm asking you because many people have a really terrible opinion about you and haven't tried to understand your true nature. Don't you feel wronged?"

Hei Jiayue didn't respond immediately. She just drank another sip, calmly. Then she let out a short, arrogant "hmph."

"Ants always talk. They always tremble. They always make up stories."

She swirled the cup with mild irritation, as if even the wine were becoming unworthy of her tongue.

"...It would be unworthy of me to feel wronged by a situation like this. It was just a few million years alone... no big deal." Her voice remained haughty, but there was something almost subtle behind the arrogance, something she wouldn't admit: "I'm happy that the master took me out of there and gave a new life to this queen... that's all."

"So, since the opinions of outsiders don't matter, what really matters in our lives?" Ren Zu asked with a smile.

"Master, forgive my ignorance...?" Hei Jiayue said, genuinely not understanding where he was going with this topic....

Ren Zu pointed to Hei Jiayue and then to himself: "It's us, ourselves. It's our truest feelings. Ask yourself. Listen to the voice deep in your heart. What do you want to do? What kind of person do you want to become? Where do you want to go? You'll find the answer deep in your heart..."

"If you want to travel, travel the world. If you want to treat others well, treat them properly. If you want to reach the top of the profound practitioners' world, gather resources and dedicate your life to it. It might contradict what I said about treating others well, but that's being selfish.... Being selfish to fulfill your own ambitions and desires in your heart."

"People's opinions are irrelevant when you follow your heart. Don't hurt yourself because of their attitude. If you get hurt often... you'll end up regretting it. Because, sooner or later, you'll stop listening to your own voice, and start caring only about what others think. And then... you'll wear a mask all the time to pretend to be someone else. And at that moment... you'll stop being yourself."

Hei Jiayue stayed still and didn't respond for a long few minutes.

"..."

Ren Zu didn't insist.

He just remained seated beside her, drinking calmly, as if that silence were a natural part of the conversation.

And then...

Hei Jiayue finally spoke, still staring at the wine as if it were guilty of something.

"...Master."

Ren Zu shifted his eyes to her.

She squeezed the cup again and cast a sidelong glance, irritated, as if she were offended just by having to say that out loud.

"Why..." The voice came out sharp, trying to sound indifferent. "Why are you saying these things all of a sudden?"

She turned to him, chin raised, trying to regain her pose as absolute queen.

"What stupid talk is this about... 'mask' and 'listening to your own voice'?" She clicked her tongue. "Are you drunk, is that it? This Queen should confiscate that wine immediately before you start reciting poetry!"

Ren Zu smiled faintly; he swirled the cup in his hand and replied calmly:

"Because I want to know something."

Hei Jiayue narrowed her eyes.

"...What?"

Ren Zu tilted his chin slightly, observing her as if reading an open book.

"This form."

He paused, as if choosing his words.

"You chose it because you liked it... or because you thought it was what I wanted?"

That was a question he had always had in his heart and hadn't been able to ask until that moment because he was too busy with his plans.

Hei Jiayue froze at the question; she opened her mouth and closed it. Opened it again, as if she wanted to explode in anger, curse, threaten to rip out his tongue for daring to ask something like that... But nothing came out. Because, deep down... she knew exactly what the answer was.

The silence stretched.

Ren Zu didn't pressure her.

He just looked at the sunset, as if that question were just a simple gesture... but an important one.

Hei Jiayue finally looked away forcefully, as if protecting herself. She huffed again.

This time, it was a weaker sound.

Almost... embarrassed.

"...What a stupid question." She grumbled.

Ren Zu just stayed quiet.

And then Hei Jiayue spoke, in a tone that tried to be aggressive, but came out... too vulnerable to convince.

"It's obvious, isn't it?! This Queen... this Empress..." The voice trembled a little, which irritated her even more. "I chose this because..."

She swallowed hard.

And the words came out, almost as if pulled from her:

"...Because I wanted you to look at me."

An instant.

The wind passed, making the flowers dance.

"...I wanted to be loved by you, master."

She said it low, almost spitting the words out of shame.

Then, as if that were the most humiliating thing ever said in the history of the universe, she exploded, trying to turn pain into arrogance:

"So what?! What's the problem with that?! You're my master! You're all I have! This Queen doesn't need anyone else besides you!"

The cup in her hand trembled.

She turned her face to the side forcefully, her black hair whipping in the wind to hide the gleam in her eyes.

But her voice, now, no longer lied.

"...I don't want..." she murmured, almost inaudible. "...I don't want you to leave me alone again."

The words came loaded with something ancient; millions of years of silence, abandonment, darkness.

Hei Jiayue took a deep breath, trying to compose herself, as if about to return to being an impeccable queen.

But the last sentence escaped before she could close her heart:

"If I'm useless to you... you'll really seal me one day." She paused. And whispered, with childish resentment and genuine fear mixed: "...And I won't survive that again...."

Ren Zu stayed silent for a few seconds.

Then, slowly... he extended his hand and touched the top of her head.

A light caress.

Like someone holding a soul with delicacy.

And Hei Jiayue, even trying to maintain her pose... trembled, melting inside, as always.

"I understand..." Ren Zu said next, his voice soft like the wind blowing through the mountain peak, laden with a tenderness he rarely showed to others. He continued stroking her black hair, his fingers tracing gentle paths, as if soothing not just a queen, but a part of himself that had found unexpected peace: "I won't abandon you in any way, Jiayue. Even if you were useless... which, by the way, you're not... I'd feel a bit lonely without you around..."

He paused, looking at the horizon where the sun was now completely hidden, leaving the sky in a deep violet veil. A genuine smile curved his lips, one of those rare ones that reached his black eyes, making them less cold and more human.

"You know, I've gotten used to your chattering in this last month. You babbling about the things of the world, about the stars swirling in your eyes, about the ancient legends you've seen unfold... somehow, you've become the person I can share my thoughts with, like I did now. Without masks, without judgments. Just the two of us, here, drinking wine and talking about life...."

"Hmph..." Hei Jiayue grumbled, her voice failing ridiculously. "Of course I am. I'm the best. This Queen has always been important to the master...."

She moved a little closer, without asking permission.

As if she were just... "taking her place."

And then, in a whisper so low that even the wind almost couldn't carry it, she admitted: "This Empress doesn't need sweet words to feel safe. But... if you insist on being like this, I... I allow you to continue."

Ren Zu laughed low, an affectionate sound that echoed softly in the air: "Then, keep being yourself, Jiayue. Not someone you saw in my memories. And I promise... I'll be here to listen to all your 'chattering' for as long as you want."

Hei Jiayue, still nestled against his shoulder, let out a long sigh, as if finally releasing an ancient burden she had carried for eons. Her delicate fingers traced invisible patterns on the sleeve of Ren Zu's dark robes, an almost unconscious gesture, but laden with affection.

"Hmph... whatever. Don't think I'll change just because you asked, master..."

She murmured, forcing haughtiness into her voice, but her eyes betrayed a rare softness.

"This form... it's mine now. And if I like it, then that's it."

She paused, as if the following words had a different weight.

"Besides, I only learned about my entire special existence in the Primordial Chaos because of you, master." Her lips curved minimally, almost imperceptibly. "That made me realize I'm something equivalent to a noble lineage for ordinary people..."

Her gaze lifted, regaining pride naturally.

"So I think it's fitting for you to refer to me as Milady Queen."

Ren Zu remained silent for a few moments, just letting the cold wind from the peak pass between them. The cup in his hand swirled slowly, in a distracted movement, as if he were pondering something deep, which, in truth, wasn't necessarily the case.

He just realized that his conversation with Hei Jiayue had the opposite effect of what he expected.

Instead of becoming more "moderate," she seemed even more like the Milady Queen from his memories.

Well... if she wanted to act that way, he wouldn't mind.

Honestly, after a whole month, he was starting to like it.

And there was another detail: Hei Jiayue was linked to him on a spiritual level, capable of capturing his emotions with absolute precision. Because of that, she always nailed the timing. She knew exactly when she could sustain that arrogant "queen" posture... and when she should drop the act. The moment she sensed he was speaking even minimally seriously, she panicked inside and immediately became obedient again, a trait that differentiated her quite a bit from the Milady Queen in his memories.

In the end, it was simple:

She did everything to please him.

So he let out a low sigh, almost amused.

"...Milady Queen?"

Hei Jiayue raised her chin immediately, as if being crowned in that exact second.

"Yes." Her voice came out firm, full of sovereignty. "Milady Queen. It sounds worthy. It sounds... inevitable. And it suits this Empress."

She cast a sidelong glance, with that possessive and dangerous gleam that only existed when it came to him.

"Besides, master..." she murmured, as if granting mercy to the universe, "...if I'm an existence equivalent to a noble lineage, then I need a name to match. A name that makes people tremble just hearing it."

Ren Zu laughed lightly, finally, and his laughter had something rare.

"You really don't miss an opportunity to crown yourself."

"This Queen doesn't crown herself." Jiayue retorted instantly, indignant. "This Queen is born crowned."

Ren Zu tilted the cup, took a sip, and with his other hand, gave another slow caress to the top of her head.

"Alright, alright..." He replied calmly, like someone accepting the world's most dangerous whim. "Milady Queen, then."

The reaction was immediate.

Hei Jiayue froze.

Her spiritual body went rigid for half a second and then seemed to melt against his shoulder, as if someone had extinguished an entire war inside her.

But, obviously, she couldn't show that.

So she huffed.

"Hmph! Of course." She crossed her arms, feigning total indifference. "You're just acknowledging the obvious."

Ren Zu turned his face slightly, looking at her with that minimal smile that always threatened to dismantle her entire pose.

"Are you happy?"

"Happy?!" Jiayue repeated, scandalized. "How absurd! This Queen doesn't get 'happy' over little things like this!"

She paused, and her voice came out lower, almost like a secret she hated having.

"...But it's better than you calling me 'Jiayue' as if I were just any old spirit."

Ren Zu nodded slowly.

"Then I'll do this: when we're alone... I'll call you Jiayue."

Hei Jiayue narrowed her eyes.

"...And when we're not?"

Ren Zu looked directly at her.

"When we're not..." he said calmly, "...I'll call you Milady Queen."

Her pupils trembled.

She stayed silent, staring at the horizon, as if "thinking," but actually fighting to maintain her queenly expression and not smile like a silly girl.

And she failed a little.

Her mouth curved into a tiny smile, too quick to be seen as "happiness," but too real to be denied.

"Hmph..." she grumbled again, almost satisfied. "Then it's decided."

She straightened up a bit and pointed at him, imperious:

"And you, master... make sure not to forget. If you mess up even once, this Queen—"

Ren Zu interrupted, calm:

"Will kill me?"

"I will!" she responded without thinking, with theatrical indignation. "I'll crush your soul with my own hands—"

Ren Zu just stared at her.

Her throat locked up again.

"...Hmph." Jiayue looked away. "Just kidding."

Ren Zu laughed low, and then pulled her a little closer, as if it were natural.

The night was already almost complete. The stars were beginning to appear one by one.

And, for a moment, Hei Jiayue stayed quiet, resting her forehead on his shoulder.

"Master..." she murmured.

"Yes?"

Her voice came out lower, with the arrogance almost nonexistent:

"...Thank you."

Ren Zu didn't respond with words.

He just smiled faintly.

(A/N: Good night, everyone! I ended up delaying posting this chapter due to some personal issues. Originally, it would have been split into two, but I preferred to write it all in one, so as not to cut the narrative or harm the presentation of this character. Anyway... Hei Jiayue wasn't exactly in my plans at the beginning. But it's been a while since I wanted to write a Fanfic in Martial God Asura, mainly because of Eggy, who is simply my favorite character among all the Chinese novels I've read. But since my schedule is already packed with many stories, I decided not to create a direct fanfic and instead make a character inspired by her. That's how Hei Jiayue was born... and you've already seen a bit of her lore in this chapter.

I believe the construction turned out quite coherent: Eggy, in certain aspects, has that "spoiled child" way, and Hei Jiayue inherited that partially. At the same time, she also carries traits from the Little Demon Empress, and there's a reason for that: Hei Jiayue absorbed that side through Ren Zu's memories. So, if at some moments she acts similarly to the Little Demon Empress, it's precisely because of that influence.

Still, I want her to have her own identity throughout the story, and not just be a "copy" of other characters. Including, the original spirit of the Wheel is a female child, so that base also helped shape her personality.

I hope I managed to convey exactly what I wanted with this presentation.

So... what did you think?

Did you like her?

Do you think I should gradually change her personality? I really don't want her to be similar to the other women around Ren Zu, so I gave her a more unique way.

And yes... I can already say in advance: she will be Ren Zu's most faithful companion, since she will follow him throughout his life in his mind, Chu Feng and Eggy style...
