Lying together, two young women snuggled on a narrow bed in a forgotten motel in a chaotic Zaun neighborhood. The old, dimly lit room smelled of damp metal and burnt oil, but neither seemed to care. Outside, the cold light of a neon sign pulsed, while the distant roar of hovering vehicles echoed through the air. Even so, within that tiny space, they had their own haven of warmth, just for themselves.
Jinx, her bluish hair spread across the pillow, watched Lux with a mixture of anxiety and tenderness. She seemed to be trying to understand an invisible secret that haunted the blonde's mind. Something heavy hung in the air, unlike the lighthearted moments they usually shared.
"Hey, Lux… Are you still awake?" whispered Jinx, hiding her face between her friend's breasts, her voice trembling as if carrying a weight difficult to explain.
Lux turned slowly, her gaze reflecting the neon hues outside. Her expression was gentle, but full of curiosity:
"Um… yeah, I am. Why?"
Jinx hesitated, biting her lip as she struggled to keep from trembling, which was caused by her racing heart.
"Nothing special… I just had a question for you."
The silence stretched out like an electric cable that would break soon. Lux leaned in, wrapping the girl up in a hug that was simultaneously delicate and indestructible.
"What is it?"
"You're not going away, are you?" whispered Jinx, her eyes brimming with tears that reflected the harsh streetlights, and her nails were digging into the fabric of Lux's shirt like anchors in a stormy sea.
Lux ran her fingers through the young girl's blue hair, tangling delicately with locks that glinted in the glow of the Zaun signs. Her voice was soft yet resolute, infused with a perilous heat, as if the vow that she was uttering could either rescue or ruin:
"Never. I won't ever leave you. No matter what happens… nothing made of metal, nothing made of magic, nothing from this city. We're in this together," she said again, adding a gentle kiss to Jinx's forehead—equal parts saccharine and final.
The words were heavy in the air, pregnant with ozone and gunpowder, as sweet as a mild poison. Jinx felt her heart pounding, and for a split second, all of Zaun faded away: there was nothing but that promise, that certainty, that burned and soothed simultaneously. Their love was limitless and rule-free. It was a fire that could not be put out, and even if the city plotted against them, even if the world were made of steel and sorcery, nothing could tear them apart.
Lux smiled and, in the neon glow across Jinx's eyes, there was something a bit beyond the ordinary: a mute and timeless magic that could only exist between two souls waging to meet even in chaos.
