Chapter 569 - Chapter 447

The coalition did not stop after taking the western compound.

Teams that had spent the most cultivation in the previous fighting rotated away from the foremost positions while fresher mixed formations moved through them, but the direction of advance never changed. Wounded cultivators were passed toward Liora and the deeper healer groups, damaged weapons were exchanged where replacements were immediately available, and the Second Mixed Legion resumed moving before the demons farther north could mistake the brief reorganization for hesitation. The Sixth remained close behind, carrying enough fresh strength that the leading formations did not need to slow each time one company reached its limit.

Haotian stayed near the forward body of the army. The battlefield ahead had changed again, but not in the demons' favor. Through the Dao of the Universe, he could sense groups moving toward the roads from several parts of nine o'clock, yet the pattern lacked the depth the defenders had possessed earlier. Companies were arriving from different positions at different times, some already depleted from previous rotations and others pulled from sectors that had never expected to become part of the main battle. Their commanders were trying to construct another defensive system while the pieces required to build it were still in motion.

The stronger positions farther north were not empty. Formation towers remained active, elevated platforms still held ranged cultivators, and surviving military compounds contained troops capable of fighting in organized bodies. The problem was that Haotian had reached them faster than the surviving Demon Generals had expected. Instead of receiving a prepared army from nine, each defensive area was now taking in fragments from the south while trying to absorb new reinforcements from deeper inside the sector.

The first assault had already damaged too many of the stronghold's internal relationships for redistribution to occur cleanly. Roads had been broken, local command systems had been destroyed, underground passages had been collapsed, and the surviving Demon Generals had deliberately decentralized portions of their command after learning how vulnerable concentrated systems could become. Those changes had helped prevent another single catastrophic failure, but now they also meant troops could not be redirected from one side of the stronghold and instantly behave as one army somewhere else.

Haotian had no reason to give them the time they needed.

"Keep the Second moving," he told the nearest commander. "Do not wait for every formation behind us to finish rotating."

The commander acknowledged and pushed the order through the leading companies.

The northern road narrowed between two military structures before opening toward another defensive position. The demons had placed shielded cultivators across the center and ranged fighters along the upper floors, while several heavier attackers waited behind the visible line. It was a sensible place to slow an army, but the number of defenders was already smaller than the force that had held the previous western compound.

The Second Mixed Legion entered without stopping. Blue Sphere cultivators absorbed the first ranged attacks while Celestara fighters moved toward the upper structures. Marephoros cultivation stabilized the road beneath teams adjusting position, and Umbrel fighters used the side shadows only far enough to prevent the demons from turning the buildings into hidden flanking routes. Pyrelith cultivators remained behind the first collision until enough enemy bodies compressed into the road for their force to matter.

The demons expected the coalition to spend time dismantling the position. Haotian did not. He saw the largest formation relationship running between the western building and the shielded line before the first barrier fully stabilized. The structure was not one of the deep formation networks they had encountered farther south. It was a local defense built quickly around whatever intact nodes remained in the district.

Haotian moved through the Blue Sphere line. A demonic cultivator stepped forward with a heavy blade and tried to meet him before he reached the formation anchor, but Haotian shifted past the weapon, caught the attacker's wrist during the recovery, and drove his shoulder into the demon's chest hard enough to break the man's stance. Fist of Ruin followed at close range, sending the cultivator backward into the shielded rank and opening enough room for Haotian to continue.

Another defender attempted to close the opening, but Lianhua reached it first. Cloud-Sundering Steps carried her through the shifting formation pressure, and the Voidpierce Sword Sutra cut through the relationship between the defender's barrier and the supporting node behind him. The shield failed before the cultivator understood why his defense had stopped responding.

Yinxue attacked the exposed anchor.

One sword strike split the active relationship.

The local formation collapsed across half the road, and the Second Mixed Legion surged through the weakened side before the demons could redistribute power from the remaining section. Blue Sphere cultivators drove the first rank backward while Pyrelith attacks struck the compressed formations behind them. Marephoros pressure prevented the withdrawing demons from widening into the adjacent street and creating another clean line.

The position lasted only several exchanges.

The local commander recognized the outcome early enough to preserve part of his force. He ordered a withdrawal toward the next military block rather than sacrificing everyone around the failed formation. Ranged cultivators fired from the upper structures to cover the retreat, but Celestara fighters had already reached enough of those positions to reduce the pressure falling onto the road.

The coalition did not chase the withdrawing soldiers through every doorway. It simply kept moving north.

That became the rhythm of the advance. A smaller defensive formation tried to hold the next intersection and lost one support before the Second Legion fully reached it. Haotian saw the weakness, Yueru disrupted the active inscriptions with Lightning, and Ziyue cut through the exposed structure before the demons could shift the burden elsewhere. The barrier failed so quickly that the defenders abandoned the intersection rather than attempt to rebuild it under direct pressure.

Another group tried to use two elevated walkways to fire into the advancing legions from opposing angles. Tianlan and the Frost Rainbow Falcons moved with the Celestara fighters before those positions could coordinate their attacks. One Falcon forced the left-side defenders higher into the open air while the other crossed beneath them, giving the Celestara cultivators clean angles from the adjoining rooftops.

Tianlan remained below. His spear worked through compact thrusts whenever demons attempted to descend toward the road, and he avoided the broad rotations that had begun pulling against his healing forearm during the previous fighting. Ninefold Thrust appeared only when one heavier aerial cultivator dropped too low and attempted to break through the Celestara line toward the mixed formations beneath them.

The demon blocked the first thrust. The next came from a slightly lower angle, and the third forced his weapon upward. Tianlan continued only far enough to close the remaining space before one of the Frost Rainbow Falcons struck from above and drove the demon toward the side of the walkway, where a Celestara cultivator finished the exchange.

Tianlan lowered his spear and kept moving with the army. Haotian noticed that his son had not attempted to pursue the remaining aerial defenders and left him to continue managing the injury within his own limits.

The road widened again.

More demonic cultivators were arriving from the west. They did not have enough time to establish a complete formation before the coalition reached them, but their commander still tried to create one. Shielded troops moved toward the center while ranged fighters spread toward the buildings and formation specialists hurried toward two intact nodes on opposite sides of the road.

Haotian could see immediately that neither node was fully connected.

"Do not let them finish."

The Second Mixed Legion increased its pace.

Haotian crossed the remaining distance with the first combat layer and struck the stronger node directly. The demon guarding it met him with both hands around a heavy spear, driving the weapon toward Haotian's torso before he reached the structure. Haotian shifted inside the thrust, struck the spear shaft near the midpoint, and forced the weapon outward before hitting the demon beneath the ribs and breaking his ability to maintain the weapon line.

The guard staggered.

Haotian drove his foot into the formation node.

Stone cracked beneath the impact, and the incomplete inscriptions failed before they could stabilize. Across the road, Yueru and Ziyue reached the second node while its operators were still drawing power through it. Yueru's Lightning disrupted the active channels and forced the formation specialists to defend their own circulation, while Ziyue followed with a narrow Severing Arc that cut through the physical support.

There was no completed barrier by the time the Second Mixed Legion reached them.

The demons still fought, but they had to do it without the defense they had been trying to create. Blue Sphere fighters broke into the unfinished center while Pyrelith cultivators struck the denser groups trying to reinforce it. Umbrel fighters appeared along the side streets and prevented several smaller demonic teams from attacking the legion's flank, while Marephoros cultivation distorted the footing beneath another group trying to turn the road into a countercharge.

The demons were not failing because they had lost discipline. Their companies simply continued arriving separately. One group was already fighting while another was still entering the road, and a third remained several streets away. Haotian and the family were already inside the first before the others could support it.

Lianhua moved along the left side and broke defensive relationships before the local formations could stabilize around them. Yinxue followed the openings her sword created, attacking structural points the defenders depended upon instead of wasting time on every cultivator in front of her. Yueru and Ziyue kept the eastern side from reforming while Xiangyin drove her spear through the portions of the line trying to establish enough distance for another defense.

Yanfei remained behind the immediate front and watched the routes through which more soldiers were trying to enter the battle. Frostfire spread across one side road after another demonic group committed to it. Ice formed over the damaged paving and climbed the lower walls, narrowing the route without sealing it completely, and the following heat cracked the road beneath the approaching formation. The front lost alignment, allowing Pyrelith fighters to strike before the company recovered.

Yanfei did not pursue them into the street. She turned north again with the rest of the army.

The same restraint repeated throughout the coalition. The mixed legions were not trying to destroy every demon between eight and the northern wall of the stronghold. They broke whatever directly obstructed the route and continued before the enemy could reorganize. Surviving groups were therefore pushed into positions already struggling to absorb their own defenders and reinforcements.

Xuanyin watched the effect from the moving command depth. Her officers received reports faster than the map could be redrawn. Positions marked as active defenses were failing before the next updates reached her, while groups expected to reinforce nine were being forced into battle as soon as they arrived. She stopped trying to record every local formation and tracked only the larger concentrations capable of influencing Haotian's route.

"Nine is losing its southern depth," she said.

Shuyue stood close enough to hear while maintaining support over several exhausted mixed teams. "How much is left before their main positions?"

"More than enough to fight. Not enough to stop Father at this speed."

Shuyue looked toward the battle ahead and continued using the Dao Palace of Virtues in limited fashion rather than spreading it unnecessarily through the entire army. The first legions had already fought through multiple positions, and their exhaustion remained real even when the enemy resistance failed quickly. She directed smaller waves of stabilizing influence through the teams rotating away from the front, easing accumulated strain and restoring clarity without trying to refill every cultivator's strength through brute support.

Fresh mixed teams moved past them.

The Second Legion commander began rotating more aggressively. Companies that had carried multiple consecutive engagements moved backward while fresh teams took their places, and the transitions occurred while the formation remained in motion. The Sixth performed the same work behind them, allowing the army to keep advancing instead of treating every rotation as a halt.

Farther south, the six-o'clock force continued pressing the coalition rear.

Its attacks were becoming heavier, but the battle was no longer close enough to affect Haotian directly. The rear formations held the captured junction and surrounding roads while Xuanyin sent only the reinforcements required to maintain that defense. Six could force the coalition to keep soldiers behind, but it could not make the main army turn around.

The six-o'clock commander understood the limitation and ordered his forward companies to increase their pressure, hoping to force Xuanyin to commit more formations south. The coalition rear gave ground through one outer intersection and stabilized at the next.

"Do they need another legion?" one officer asked Xuanyin.

"No."

"They are under heavier pressure."

"They are still holding the protected roads."

"Yes."

"Then reinforce them with fresh companies from the reserve. Do not strip the northern advance."

The order went out without reaching Haotian. The coalition had been built to function beyond his immediate reach, and the rear had enough strength to continue doing so.

Ahead, the next defensive concentration finally possessed more depth than the smaller positions Haotian had already broken. Several demonic companies occupied a wide military avenue with two compounds standing opposite one another. Formation towers rose behind both positions, and the road between them contained enough soldiers that the defenders could absorb one breakthrough without exposing everything farther north. More importantly, Haotian could sense another large body approaching from deeper nine.

The demons were finally gathering enough manpower to create a position that might last, but they were still gathering when the coalition reached it.

The six-o'clock force reached the coalition's rear in greater numbers at roughly the same time. What had begun as pressure from advance companies became a broader attack as more formations cleared the damaged routes through seven and entered the southern approaches to the captured junction. The delays Xiangyin and Yanfei had created had never been intended to destroy them. They had ensured only that these soldiers arrived after the main coalition had already moved north.

The six-o'clock commander understood the situation immediately. Multiple mixed companies occupied the broad southern road, other formations covered the side streets, and Celestara cultivators held enough of the surrounding height that an aerial bypass could not be attempted unnoticed. Farther inside the coalition position, the command and healer formations remained beyond immediate striking distance.

A direct charge through the center would accomplish little, so the demons spread their pressure. Officers divided arriving companies between the main road and several secondary approaches that had survived the damage through seven. Ranged cultivators occupied buildings along the southern edge of the junction, while smaller groups moved toward side streets and underground entrances.

Xuanyin received the reports without changing the overall plan.

"The six-o'clock force is spreading across three approaches," one officer reported. "The main road has the largest concentration. Another group is moving west through the damaged structures, and we have movement near one of the underground service routes."

"How many formations are already committed?"

"More than the advance companies from earlier, but not their entire force."

"They are testing how much we kept behind."

Xuanyin pointed toward the broad southern road. "Keep the current Blue Sphere anchors there. Rotate another mixed company behind them before the demons increase pressure."

Her hand shifted west. "Umbrel observers stay inside supporting distance. I do not want them chasing scouts through the structures. Find the attack route and give it to the formations holding that side."

She moved to the underground marker last.

"Veridian teams inspect that route now. If six is trying to use it to reach behind the rear formations, collapse it after confirming none of our people are inside."

The first heavy attack arrived before the adjustments were complete.

Shielded demons advanced under overlapping barriers while heavier cultivators remained several ranks behind them, waiting for the first collision to reveal weaknesses in the coalition line. Ranged attacks crossed above the formation from occupied buildings, striking defensive layers from alternating angles rather than concentrating everything on the center.

Blue Sphere cultivators received the front.

The impact pushed several teams backward, but the line yielded evenly rather than breaking around individual fighters. Their mixed partners moved with them, Marephoros cultivation spreading through the damaged ground and preventing the demons from turning those steps into a loss of footing. The coalition stopped after giving only enough ground to absorb the pressure.

Pyrelith fighters waited while the demonic formation continued compressing through the width available between the damaged structures. Once enough bodies occupied the road, concentrated attacks passed through openings between the Blue Sphere formations and struck several points in succession. The demon barriers held the first impacts but were still redistributing strength when the next attacks arrived, allowing the Blue Sphere cultivators to move forward again.

The southern road remained contested rather than opening into the coalition rear.

The six-o'clock commander shifted his next pressure west.

The demons there moved through damaged structures in smaller groups instead of one formation, using connected buildings and broken side streets in an attempt to approach the coalition flank from different angles. The Umbrel observers did not hunt them individually. They watched until the groups began converging toward the same road and then reported the route to the mixed formations holding that side.

The first demonic group emerged and found no exposed rear.

Marephoros cultivation altered the broken paving beneath them, forcing the front ranks toward the center of the street. The group entering behind them compressed around the same damaged ground, and Pyrelith attacks struck before either formation could spread properly.

The demons withdrew into the buildings.

The Umbrel cultivators let them go.

The underground approach failed just as quickly. Veridian cultivators descended far enough to confirm that an organized demonic formation was moving toward the surface, then withdrew and began weakening the passage supports. Roots entered existing cracks, hardened wood expanded through damaged stone, and the tunnel collapsed after the final coalition cultivator returned aboveground.

Most of the demons had enough warning to avoid being buried.

They also no longer possessed a usable underground route into the coalition rear.

The six-o'clock commander adapted again. More ranged cultivators moved into structures south of the junction while several heavy formations shifted toward the eastern side. Rather than trying to penetrate deeply through one route, the demons began increasing pressure across the rear as a whole. Their objective was narrowing from breakthrough to commitment. If they could not reach Haotian directly, they could at least force Xuanyin to keep soldiers behind him.

"They have stopped searching for an immediate route through us," Xuanyin said.

"They are trying to keep the reserves here," an officer replied.

"Yes."

"How much more do you want to commit?"

"Nothing yet."

The officer checked the reports again.

"The current formations stay?"

"They stay. If six sends more, rotate tired teams with the reserves already assigned to the rear. Do not pull anyone out of the northern march unless this line actually starts failing."

Enemy pressure alone would not decide the coalition's movement.

The southern attack intensified. Ranged techniques fell more heavily over the junction, and Celestara cultivators had to contest demonic aerial fighters above the protected roads. They did not need to dominate the entire airspace. They needed only to prevent those fighters from reaching the command and healer formations below.

The eastern attack reached the coalition line next.

Several heavier demonic formations struck the defenders there together and drove the front farther back than any earlier assault from six. Two Blue Sphere cultivators were thrown from their feet when a heavy technique hit their barrier directly, and the demons immediately tried to widen the damaged section.

Marephoros fighters reacted before the opening developed.

Water surged through cracks in the road and spread beneath the advancing demons. It did not sweep them away, but it changed the resistance beneath their feet enough that the front row stopped moving at the same speed. The combined momentum broke apart, giving the Blue Sphere cultivators enough time to recover while a fresh mixed company entered behind them.

The line closed.

Pyrelith pressure struck through the recovery and forced several heavier attackers backward.

Xuanyin continued watching through reports rather than moving personally toward every threatened point. The mixed-company officers understood their roles and adjusted within them.

Another message reached her.

"Six is moving another company toward the east."

"Rotate one fresh company behind our eastern line. Keep the current front until they are ready."

"Yes."

"No one advances south after the demons withdraw."

The coalition rear existed to protect the northward advance.

It was not another offensive.

Liora's treatment area became busier as the fighting continued. Most of the wounded reaching her now came from the rear battle, where six had enough manpower to maintain pressure over time. She treated serious injuries with Life essence and left wounds that could be stabilized conventionally to the other healers, preserving her deeper strength for cases that required it.

A Blue Sphere fighter arrived with a fractured forearm after taking a heavy strike through a barrier. Liora stabilized the bone, reduced the internal bleeding, and ordered him away from the line rather than trying to restore the arm completely during the battle. Another cultivator arrived with burns across the shoulder and neck from an abyssal ranged attack, forcing her to remove the hostile energy before beginning the actual healing.

One healer glanced toward the wounded waiting nearby.

"Should we request more healers from the north?"

"No. They will need theirs soon. Use the healers already assigned here and send anyone stable enough to travel back toward eight if we need more room."

The coalition continued functioning as one army even though the fighting now stretched across multiple districts.

Farther north, Haotian's advance never stopped.

The defensive concentration around the two compounds was the largest nine o'clock had managed to assemble since the coalition entered the sector, but it had not been given enough time to become a complete front. The broad avenue between the compounds had been filled with shielded companies, heavier fighters, and formation specialists, while additional soldiers continued arriving from deeper nine and retreating companies from the south were still entering through the same roads.
