Chapter 53 - Payday Never Comes

Chapter — Payday Never Comes

Veydras reached for Discordia.

Noctis saw his hand.

Then the number above it.

303%.

"No," Noctis whispered.

Veydras did not hear him.

Or did not care.

Goldless fractures crawled from beneath the glove he had already thrown away.

His fingers were shaking.

Not from fear.

From the effort of remaining fingers.

Behind him, Eris Mallicia lay against the broken ground.

Her right arm ended at the shoulder.

Nothing grew back.

Nothing tried.

There was no wound attempting to close around a missing limb.

Discordia had not merely removed the arm.

She had damaged the fact that Eris had ever possessed that particular relationship to her own body.

Dominant hand.

Sword hand.

Spear hand.

The hand War had spent her entire existence teaching first.

Gone.

Eris watched Veydras advance through wet eyes.

"Veydras…"

He kept walking.

Her voice broke.

"Don't."

Veydras stopped several meters from Discordia.

The woman looked at him.

No anger.

No amusement.

Barely recognition.

Most of Discordia had returned before enough of Discordia had returned to understand it.

Power first.

Person later.

And somewhere inside that incomplete person—

Karma's last instruction remained.

Eris Mallicia.

Slowly.

Veydras uncovered his other hand.

Noctis's expression changed.

"Veydras."

His friend raised both palms.

"Overclocked."

The Theater shuddered.

"Three hundred and three percent."

Discordia tilted her head.

Veydras's skin began losing agreement with itself.

"Ontological Destabilization."

The space between them turned pale.

"Fault Absolute."

Veydras moved.

Noctis did not see the step.

He saw what the step cost.

Distance destabilized beneath Veydras's feet.

The distinction between here and there lost enough certainty that he crossed it before either location could object.

His palm struck Discordia's chest.

For the first time since her awakening—

Discordia changed.

Her outline tore.

Red broke out through her skin in thin impossible fractures.

Her shoulder existed several centimeters from itself.

Her hair fell in three different directions despite there being only one gravity.

The ground beneath her forgot whether she was touching it.

Then her face destabilized.

Not injured.

Unagreed upon.

For one instant, Veydras saw a woman.

Then an arrangement of Chaotic Energy.

Then something much older wearing both descriptions badly.

Veydras pushed harder.

His teeth clenched.

"Break."

Discordia's right eye disappeared.

Not closed.

The relationship allowing the eye to remain part of the face had destabilized.

Her cheek followed.

Then part of her throat.

Noctis stared.

It was working.

Veydras leaned forward.

"Break."

Discordia looked down at the hand inside her failing manifestation.

Her remaining eye focused on his fingers.

She spoke.

Her voice was quiet.

"Interesting."

Veydras froze.

Discordia's body was still coming apart.

She raised one hand anyway.

Noctis saw the entry before he saw the fist.

ACTION: IMPACT

RECIPIENT: VEYDRAS MIEKŌ

PROJECTED CONSEQUENCE: TERMINAL

"No."

Discordia punched.

Veydras crossed both arms.

It did not matter.

His forearms broke first.

The force continued through them.

His ribs collapsed inward.

His spine folded.

The shock left his back before the rest of his body had decided which direction to travel.

Veydras disappeared.

The sound came afterward.

Noctis turned.

A black streak crossed the Theater.

It ended several kilometers away.

Veydras struck the ground.

Once.

Twice.

The third impact dug a trench through the battlefield.

Then he stopped.

Noctis's ledger filled with gold.

CRANIAL TRAUMA

THORACIC COLLAPSE

SPINAL FAILURE

MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE

SYSTEMIC DESTABILIZATION

Then—

FINAL CONSEQUENCE: DEATH

Noctis stopped breathing.

Veydras had survived gods.

Civilizations.

His own hands.

Quadrillions of years.

One punch.

One actual punch—

and the bill said dead.

"No."

Noctis opened his hand.

"Recompense."

The final entry flashed.

PAYMENT REQUIRED

There was nothing nearby worth enough.

No structure.

No stored correction.

No accumulated physical collateral immediately convertible at the required rate.

Veydras's heart stopped.

Noctis stared at the entry.

"Wait."

Nothing happened.

He clenched his fist.

"I said wait."

The gold changed.

Noctis went still.

A new line had appeared.

Not recipient.

Not currency.

Not exchange rate.

Something he had never consciously assigned before.

MATURITY: 4.17 SECONDS

Noctis stared.

Veydras remained dead.

No.

Not dead.

Not yet.

The consequence had been accepted.

It simply had not matured.

Noctis looked at the number.

Four seconds.

His eyes widened.

"Oh."

Three.

Noctis tore through every debt still hanging over the Theater.

Destroyed weapons.

Broken domains.

Energy spent defending against Black Sun.

Thousands of avoided consequences.

The structural loss of abandoned fortifications.

Two.

He selected a ruined Syndicate installation half-buried beyond the horizon.

One.

"Equivalent Value."

The installation vanished.

Not exploded.

Paid.

The entry over Veydras changed.

TERMINAL CONSEQUENCE: SETTLED

His heart moved.

Once.

Then again.

Veydras did not wake.

His arms remained broken.

His chest remained ruined.

His spine was still damaged.

Noctis had not healed him.

He had paid only enough to prevent those injuries from ending in death.

Everything else remained exactly where Discordia had put it.

Ilyon appeared beside Veydras.

He looked down.

Then at Noctis.

"Alive?"

"Barely."

"Can he fight?"

Noctis looked at the body.

"No."

Ilyon bent down.

Noctis snapped, "Do not touch his hands."

"I know."

Ilyon misaligned Veydras's weight with the ground instead.

The ruined body lifted without skin contact.

Noctis looked back toward Discordia.

She was whole again.

Not healed.

The destabilized manifestation had simply found another internally acceptable arrangement.

Veydras had damaged something.

Noctis could see that.

Small discontinuities remained around her shoulder.

One side of her face returned half a moment after the other whenever she turned.

Fault Absolute had worked.

It simply had not been enough.

Discordia looked at the place Veydras had disappeared.

Then at Noctis.

Her head tilted.

Noctis looked again at the golden entry still hovering above his palm.

MATURITY

He laughed once.

Eris heard him.

Her face was wet.

"What?"

Noctis did not look away from Discordia.

"I have been doing this wrong for quadrillions of years."

Eris stared at him.

"This is when you realize that?"

"Apparently."

Discordia moved.

Noctis saw no wind-up.

His Ledger did.

AGGRESSION

TARGET: NOCTIS ARQUEN

He raised one hand.

"Recompense."

Discordia's fist touched his chest.

Noctis assigned the term.

MATURITY: 1 SECOND

Nothing happened.

Discordia looked at him.

Noctis smiled.

"There."

One second passed.

His ribs broke.

Noctis folded around an impact that had happened a second earlier.

Blood left his mouth.

He hit one knee.

Discordia watched.

Noctis coughed.

"Needs work."

She struck again.

He saw the value.

Assigned the date.

MATURITY: 5 SECONDS

Her hand passed through his guard.

Nothing happened.

Noctis stumbled backward anyway.

Not from the attack.

From carrying it.

Gold spread beneath his skin.

Five seconds of unpaid destruction sat inside the Ledger.

Waiting.

Discordia stepped toward him.

Noctis wiped his mouth.

"Five seconds."

Another entry appeared.

Four.

He searched for an exchange.

Three.

Discordia raised her hand again.

Two.

Noctis found the remains of a destroyed Corps platform.

One.

"Settle."

The platform collapsed.

His delayed injury converted outward.

Noctis remained standing.

Discordia punched him again.

Noctis assigned ten seconds.

Then another attack came.

He assigned twelve.

Another.

Fifteen.

Gold climbed his throat.

Discordia was not trying to overwhelm his durability.

She did not need to.

She was filling his books.

Every postponed consequence remained a liability.

Noctis could push the date farther away.

But carrying an unpaid god through time had a cost of its own.

His legs shook.

Discordia stopped.

She looked at the numbers around him.

Then she spoke.

"Your numbers are young."

Noctis's smile disappeared.

Discordia raised one finger.

The first delayed attack matured.

Early.

Noctis's chest collapsed.

He flew backward.

His shoulder struck the ground.

A second entry matured.

Then a third.

Noctis screamed as his left leg broke beneath him.

He stared at the Ledger.

"No."

The dates had changed.

MATURITY: 11.2 SECONDS

became—

PAST DUE

The next still read—

MATURITY: 18.7 SECONDS

And beneath it—

ALREADY PAID

Both states remained.

Noctis looked at Discordia.

Chaos.

Not Karma's Chaos.

Karma had held incompatible possibilities open and selected between them.

Discordia did not need to select.

The contradiction was comfortable.

Due later.

Past due.

Unpaid.

Settled.

The Ledger accepted every state because every state had been made locally valid.

Noctis spat blood.

"That's irritating."

Discordia stepped closer.

Noctis pushed himself upright on one leg.

She raised her hand.

He watched the golden information change.

One result.

Then two.

Then sixteen.

Every possible payment schedule contradicted another.

Noctis understood.

He had been treating Discordia as the debtor.

That was the mistake.

The fist began moving.

Noctis opened his hand.

"I don't need to invoice you."

Discordia's eyes narrowed.

The fist reached him.

Noctis smiled through red teeth.

"I only need to invoice what you do."

EVENT: IMPACT

CONSEQUENCE: NOCTIS ARQUEN

MATURITY: 30 SECONDS

The punch landed.

Nothing happened.

Discordia turned her wrist.

Chaos entered the result.

30 SECONDS

became—

NOW

Noctis changed the entry.

"Forty."

NOW.

"Sixty."

NOW.

"One year."

The gold beneath his skin burned white.

Discordia's expression changed slightly.

The entry trembled.

NOW.

Noctis's smile widened.

"You had to work for that one."

Discordia hit him with her other hand.

He never saw it move.

The consequence appeared first.

His jaw broke.

Noctis spun across the ground.

He struck once.

Rolled.

Stopped.

Blood pooled beneath his face.

Eris tried to move toward him.

Her remaining hand slipped against the ground.

Her body refused to stand.

War corrected the damaged nerves enough for another attempt.

Not healing.

Function.

The bare minimum required for a participant to continue participating.

Eris got one knee beneath herself.

Her missing right side remained missing.

She looked at Discordia.

"Come back here."

Discordia's head turned.

Eris immediately regretted speaking.

Not because she was afraid.

Because Discordia obeyed.

The primordial woman turned away from Noctis.

Toward her.

Eris's face went pale.

Noctis lifted his head.

"No."

Discordia walked toward Eris.

Noctis forced his broken leg underneath himself.

It folded.

He fell again.

"Discordia."

She ignored him.

Eris tried to stand.

The ruined bones War had forced into usable arrangements shook beneath her.

Her left hand pressed against her thigh.

"Noctis."

He looked at her.

Eris's lips trembled.

"Don't let her—"

Discordia disappeared.

Noctis opened both hands.

"COLLECTION."

Gold divided the Theater.

A vertical line fell between Discordia and Eris.

It was made from everything Noctis had left.

Every unpaid strike.

Every Black Sun defense.

Every injury the Syndicate had accepted.

Every correction accumulated during Karma's war.

The line reached Discordia.

Her hand closed around it.

Noctis froze.

Not between two fingers.

Not physically.

Discordia wrapped her hand around the idea that the debt had reached maturity.

The Ledger showed:

COLLECTION: VALID

Then—

COLLECTION: SETTLED

Then—

COLLECTION: UNPAID

Then—

COLLECTION: NEVER ISSUED

All four remained.

Noctis's eyes widened.

Discordia pulled.

The golden line snapped.

Noctis screamed.

The recoil ripped across the calculations beneath his skin.

His remaining knee hit the ground.

Discordia turned back toward Eris.

Noctis stared at the broken Collection.

His breathing slowed.

Not because he was calming down.

Because breathing had become difficult.

Every strategy he knew required a finite exchange.

A value.

A settlement.

A moment at which something became due.

Discordia could contaminate every one of those moments with contradiction.

Noctis looked at the maturity field.

Ten seconds.

A minute.

A year.

A trillion years.

Still dates.

Still points.

Still things that could become now.

He laughed.

Quietly.

Eris heard him again.

She looked at him.

Noctis was staring at nothing.

"What?"

He raised one bloody finger.

"A date."

Eris blinked.

Noctis whispered, "That's the problem."

Discordia stopped walking.

Noctis looked at his own Ledger.

A debt needed an amount.

Someone to pay it.

Something to count as payment.

And—

a time at which settlement became due.

He had spent quadrillions of years manipulating the first three.

Changed debtors.

Changed currencies.

Changed values.

Split costs.

Combined them.

Deferred them.

Compounded them.

Collected them.

He had treated when as an inconvenience.

Never a term.

Noctis smiled.

"Of course."

Discordia looked at him.

Noctis dragged himself upright.

His broken leg hung uselessly.

His left eye was almost closed.

Blood ran from both nostrils and one ear.

He had one functional arm.

Barely.

Discordia faced him.

Noctis raised that arm.

He pinched empty air between two fingers.

Then turned his wrist.

As though turning the page of a book nobody else could see.

Gold appeared.

One line.

Then another.

Then thousands.

They surrounded him without becoming large.

No enormous world opened.

No celestial courthouse appeared.

No infinite library descended from heaven.

Noctis had never cared much for decoration.

He needed one room.

One account.

One debtor.

One rule.

Discordia moved.

Noctis spoke first.

"Advanced Technique."

The Theater disappeared.

Gold closed around them.

"Private Domain."

A book opened between two gods.

Noctis smiled.

"Infinite Ledger."

The world became small.

A quiet golden sphere.

Noctis stood at one end.

Discordia stood at the other.

Between them floated a single ledger.

Outside—

Eris stared at the sphere.

Ilyon arrived carrying Veydras through a misaligned field.

Caelia looked at Noctis through the gold.

"What did he do?"

Inside—

Discordia punched Noctis in the chest.

Her fist landed.

Completely.

Noctis did not move.

Discordia looked at her hand.

Writing appeared between them.

ACTION: IMPACT

RECIPIENT: NOCTIS ARQUEN

CONSEQUENCE: LETHAL

Then one final line.

MATURITY: ∞

Discordia stared.

Noctis coughed blood.

Blood from before the Domain.

His old injuries had not vanished.

Nothing had healed.

He smiled anyway.

"That landed."

Discordia struck his face.

Nothing happened.

The Ledger turned a page.

CRANIAL DESTRUCTION

VALID

MATURITY: ∞

She struck his throat.

CERVICAL FAILURE

VALID

MATURITY: ∞

She drove her palm through the position of his heart.

CARDIAC DESTRUCTION

VALID

MATURITY: ∞

Nothing resolved.

Discordia slowly lowered her hand.

Noctis wiped old blood from his chin.

"You can kill me."

He looked at the Ledger.

"Just not at any finite time."

Discordia's eyes focused.

Noctis saw the first change in them.

Not memory.

Interest.

She stepped forward.

Her foot lifted.

Then stopped.

The Ledger turned another page.

SERVICE: GROUND SUPPORT

RECIPIENT: DISCORDIA

SETTLEMENT: ∞

Her foot remained above the surface.

Discordia pushed forward.

Air failed to move.

SERVICE: ATMOSPHERIC DISPLACEMENT

SETTLEMENT: ∞

Space attempted to carry her position into another.

SERVICE: TRAVERSAL

SETTLEMENT: ∞

Her body remained still.

Not frozen.

Time continued.

Her hair moved.

Noctis breathed.

The Ledger's pages turned.

Discordia simply could not complete the exchanges required to change position.

Noctis looked at her.

"Movement is expensive."

Discordia's eye twitched.

Noctis smiled.

"Everything is."

Outside the Domain, Ilyon stared.

"He stopped her."

Eris answered immediately.

"No."

Ilyon looked at her.

Eris had spent too long fighting Chaos to make that mistake again.

"He gave her a problem."

Inside—

Discordia looked down at her unmoving foot.

Then she stopped trying to move it.

Noctis's smile vanished.

The Ledger went quiet.

Discordia remained exactly where she was.

Her body did not move.

Space did not move her.

No displacement occurred.

No journey began.

Then—

a shadow appeared behind Noctis.

Outside her body.

Noctis turned.

The Ledger filled with gold.

TRAVERSAL: NONE

DISPLACEMENT: NONE

MOVEMENT: NONE

His face went pale.

Discordia had not moved.

She was changing the relationship between where she existed—

and where she manifested.

No journey.

No transportation.

Nothing the first version of his rule had priced.

The shadow became a hand.

Noctis reacted instantly.

"Relationship."

The Ledger snapped open.

SERVICE: MANIFESTATION RELATION

MATURITY: ∞

The hand stopped.

For a moment—

nothing happened.

Then it disappeared.

Discordia looked at Noctis.

Noctis stared back.

Neither spoke.

A tiny smile appeared on Discordia's face.

Noctis hated it.

"That," he said quietly, "was fast."

Discordia tried something else.

The golden sphere trembled.

The Ledger wrote:

DOMAIN BOUNDARY: CLOSED

Then beneath it—

DOMAIN BOUNDARY: OPEN

Noctis's expression changed.

Both entries remained valid.

The sphere cracked.

One thin red line appeared across the gold.

Outside, Caelia stepped backward.

"Noctis?"

He heard her.

Noctis looked at Discordia.

She had been inside his Domain for less than a minute.

She had already identified one loophole.

Forced him to amend it.

Now she was attacking the distinction between inside and outside.

Noctis laughed weakly.

Of course she was.

Karma had used Chaos like a grandmaster.

Discordia was the reason the game had rules strange enough for Karma to learn.

Noctis stepped backward.

The Domain allowed him through its boundary.

The moment its owner crossed outside, gold exploded beneath his skin.

He collapsed.

Caelia caught him before his face reached the ground.

The sphere remained.

Barely.

Discordia stood inside.

Motionless.

The crack widened.

Ilyon looked down at Noctis.

"How long?"

Noctis coughed.

Blood hit Caelia's sleeve.

"I don't know."

Ilyon stared.

"You made it."

"I noticed."

"You don't know?"

Noctis looked at the red fracture crawling through his first Private Domain.

"She learned my Domain while I was still explaining it to myself."

That answered the question.

Noctis grabbed Ilyon's coat.

"Run."

Ilyon looked toward Eris.

Then Veydras.

Then the surviving gods scattered across the Theater.

"How far?"

Noctis's grip tightened.

"Yes."

Ilyon blinked.

Noctis shouted.

"MOVE!"

The Theater erupted.

Spatial gods opened routes.

Causal authorities tore viable retreats through damaged structure.

Ilyon spread Misalignment through the surviving formation, breaking the relationship between where Discordia would expect them to escape and where their escape would actually resolve.

Caelia reached Eris.

Eris pulled away.

"No."

Caelia stopped.

Eris tried standing.

Her remaining hand pressed into the ground.

War rebuilt enough nerve conduction for the attempt.

Her left leg straightened.

The other buckled.

She fell.

Caelia caught her beneath the shoulders.

Eris screamed.

Not loudly.

She no longer had enough intact structure for loud.

Her eyes went to the place her right arm should have been.

Nothing.

No phantom motion.

No instinct attempting to use it.

When Eris tried to imagine reaching for Caelia with that side—

War supplied no answer.

Discordia had taken even the reflex.

Eris's face collapsed.

"I can't…"

Caelia held her tighter.

Eris looked at the armies.

At Veydras.

At Noctis.

At the golden sphere containing the woman who had taken her arm, her body, and almost her desire to continue existing.

"I can't fight."

Noctis heard her.

He was barely conscious.

He turned his head.

"Then don't."

Eris looked at him.

Noctis coughed again.

"You're the God of War."

Eris's eyes filled.

"That is fighting."

"No."

Noctis looked toward the evacuating army.

"That is war."

Eris followed his gaze.

Thousands were waiting.

Not because they expected her to defeat Discordia.

Because they still expected an order.

Eris stared at them.

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Retreat.

The word felt obscene.

She had survived Karma.

Outfought him.

Been erased down to her concept.

Returned.

Forced him into a genuine defeat.

Then Discordia had taken everything in minutes.

Eris looked at her missing arm.

At Veydras's unconscious body.

At Noctis bleeding beneath Caelia's other hand.

Then at the gods who were still alive because somebody needed to make the correct decision.

War answered.

Not with a weapon.

With doctrine.

A retreat could preserve an army.

Preserving an army preserved the war.

The God of War closed her eyes.

Then opened them.

"Retreat."

Several nearby gods stopped.

Eris forced more air into her lungs.

Her voice tore on the way out.

"ALL FORCES—RETREAT!"

The command crossed the Theater.

No shame followed it.

No rejection.

War accepted the order immediately.

Eris began crying anyway.

Caelia lifted her.

This time—

Eris did not resist.

Noctis looked at her as they moved.

"There."

Eris could barely focus.

"What?"

Noctis smiled faintly.

"Not useless."

The escape routes opened.

One by one, the surviving signatures disappeared.

Veydras first.

Then the wounded.

Then the armies.

Then Ilyon.

Caelia carried Noctis and Eris toward the last fold.

Behind them—

the Infinite Ledger cracked again.

Eris looked back.

Discordia stood inside.

Still trapped.

Still motionless.

For now.

Eris saw her through the gold.

Discordia saw her too.

The command Karma had left inside that recovering mind had not disappeared.

Slowly.

Eris understood.

This was not finished.

Caelia crossed the boundary.

The Theater disappeared.

Silence returned.

Discordia stood alone inside Infinite Ledger.

The floating book turned one page.

MOVEMENT

MATURITY: ∞

Discordia looked at it.

For several seconds—

nothing happened.

Then red appeared beneath the gold.

Not another number.

A correction.

MOVEMENT

MATURITY: ∞

STATUS: PAID

The Ledger trembled.

Discordia lifted one foot.

And took a step.
