Chapter 51 - The Arm War Forgot

Chapter — The Arm War Forgot

Eris saw the target.

Her right arm.

Battle Omniscience screamed warnings.

Signal Discipline checked them.

Wrist.

Elbow.

Shoulder.

Nerves.

Grip.

Dominance.

Every route converged.

This time the information was honest.

Eris pulled the arm back.

Discordia took it anyway.

Her fingers closed around Eris's wrist.

Eris stepped forward immediately.

Do not pull against a stronger grip.

Reduce the lever.

Attack the thumb.

Turn the captured radius.

Drive the shoulder toward the opening.

Every lesson War had ever learned moved through her at once.

Eris struck Discordia's thumb.

The joint bent.

She rotated.

Discordia's grip loosened.

Eris drove her knee toward the ribs.

Discordia released—

Eris almost escaped.

Almost.

Chaos changed what released meant.

Discordia's fingers opened.

The grip ended.

The consequence of having been caught did not.

Eris's wrist remained in the place the grip had defined.

Her body moved away from it.

Her shoulder stretched.

Eris's eye widened.

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The joint dislocated.

Then tore.

Skin split.

Muscle separated.

The upper arm began leaving the shoulder.

Eris clawed at Discordia with her left hand.

Discordia caught that wrist too.

Held it away.

Eris kicked.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

Her malformed foot struck Discordia's knee hard enough to crack the ground beneath them.

Discordia did not release the relation holding Eris's right arm in place.

Eris's body moved farther away.

The shoulder came apart.

Blood struck the ground.

Eris tried to scream.

Silence.

Her face became the scream instead.

The last tissue tore.

Eris stumbled backward.

Her right arm remained in Discordia's hand.

For half a second—

nothing else happened.

Eris stared at it.

Her arm.

From shoulder to fingertips.

The fingers were still slightly curled.

Her body expected their weight.

They were not there.

Eris fell onto her left knee.

Her left hand shot toward the missing shoulder.

Blood poured between her fingers.

Counterdoctrine opened immediately.

CATASTROPHIC LIMB LOSS.

REGENERATION: UNAVAILABLE.

Eris knew.

She already knew.

Still—

Counterdoctrine searched.

Structural substitute.

Neural remapping.

Balance correction.

One-handed combat adaptation.

Possible.

Pain management through neural rerouting.

Possible.

Emergency closure.

Possible.

Then Discordia looked at the arm she was holding.

Her Chaos moved.

Not across the flesh.

Across the relationship.

Eris felt it.

Her expression changed.

War reacted.

HOSTILE CONCEPTUAL INTERACTION DETECTED.

Eris reached with everything she had.

"No—"

The ruined throat produced almost nothing.

Discordia closed her fingers.

The distinction changed.

Not:

right arm exists / right arm destroyed.

Something more intimate.

THIS LIMB BELONGS TO ERIS MALLICIA.

Chaos entered the statement.

Contradicted it.

Then ruined the route back.

The severed arm dropped.

Eris flinched.

She knew she should feel something from seeing it hit the ground.

She did.

But—

what was that?

Her eye moved from the limb to her shoulder.

Then back.

She knew intellectually that people had two arms.

She knew she had entered the battle with two.

She remembered strikes performed from the right side.

She remembered catching Karma.

She remembered holding a spear.

She remembered handwriting.

Stances.

Grip.

Every technical fact survived.

But when Eris attempted to imagine closing the missing right hand—

nothing happened inside her mind.

No phantom fingers.

No expected wrist.

No motor command terminating in an absent limb.

There was nowhere for the thought to go.

Eris stopped breathing.

Counterdoctrine searched again.

RIGHT-SIDE LIMB REPLACEMENT.

Nothing.

PROSTHETIC INTERFACE.

No target relationship.

BIOLOGICAL GRAFT.

No embodied recognition.

RECONSTRUCT RIGHT ARM.

The command failed before regeneration even became relevant.

War did not understand what Eris's right arm referred to.

Eris stared at the display.

Her left hand shook.

"No."

A tiny sound came through the destroyed voice.

She tried again.

"No."

Battle Omniscience attempted to provide a right-handed guard.

The stance contained a hole.

Its own doctrine no longer knew what belonged there.

Eris's face collapsed.

"No."

Discordia dropped the severed arm beside her.

Eris recoiled from it.

Not because it was gruesome.

Because for one terrible instant—

it looked like somebody else's.

Her breath hitched.

"No, no…"

The words were nearly silent.

She reached toward it with her left hand.

Stopped before touching it.

What would touching it prove?

It could be sewn back.

Perhaps.

Attached.

Perhaps.

But even if another authority restored every vessel, every nerve, every muscle—

the completed arm would arrive at Eris and discover that nothing inside her recognized ownership.

The instincts of War would not route through it.

Her embodied combat map had no position for it.

Her mind could learn that an object was physically attached to her.

It could not remember how to inhabit it.

Worse—

the concept of dominance had been tied to the same destruction.

Her right hand had been dominant.

Discordia had not transferred that status.

She had ruined the personal distinction.

The left could become skilled.

The left could become stronger.

The left could learn.

But Eris would never again possess the unconscious certainty by which one limb answered before thought.

No dominant hand.

Not right.

Not another.

Gone.

Eris looked at Discordia.

For the first time since the fight began—

she did not try to stand.

Discordia looked down at her.

Then at Eris's left arm.

Then her left leg.

Then the right.

Battle Omniscience returned.

One future.

It showed Discordia removing the left arm.

Not merely tearing it away.

Removing its membership in Eris.

Then a leg.

Then the other.

One by one.

When Discordia finished, War would still possess its god.

The war might still require Eris alive.

Counterdoctrine might still keep her conscious.

But there would be no valid limbs through which fighting could occur.

Discordia was not trying to kill the God of War.

She was trying to leave War with a god who could never fight again.

Eris started crying.

Harder than before.

Veydras moved.

Discordia turned toward him.

Eris saw it.

Her body responded before her despair finished.

She planted her left hand.

Tried to rise.

One arm.

Two ruined legs.

A malformed spine.

Broken ribs.

Open skull.

No voice.

War found a way.

Of course it did.

Counterdoctrine shifted her balance left.

Reorganized stance.

Reassigned defensive routes.

Adapted the center of mass for the missing limb.

Eris felt it happening.

Her face twisted with horror.

She shook her head.

No.

War continued.

COMBAT FUNCTION RESTORATION IN PROGRESS.

She did not want it.

For the first time in her existence—

the God of War did not want to be made capable of fighting.

Her left foot moved beneath her.

Eris sobbed.

She tried to stop herself from standing.

Her own divinity disagreed.

She rose.

Badly.

Discordia watched.

Eris swayed.

Her empty right side changed every balance calculation she had possessed moments earlier.

Counterdoctrine supplied new ones.

Eris hated every answer.

Discordia approached.

Eris raised her left hand.

The stance felt foreign.

Discordia threw a punch.

Eris slipped it.

Barely.

Another.

She ducked.

The third caught her ribs.

They broke again.

Eris hit the ground.

No scream.

Only air leaving.

Discordia waited.

Counterdoctrine began.

Eris cried.

Discordia waited.

Bone hardened.

Eris stood.

Discordia hit her.

Eris fell.

War adapted.

Discordia waited.

Eris stood.

Another strike.

Her jaw broke again.

Down.

Adapt.

Stand.

A kick folded her left knee sideways.

Down.

Adapt.

Stand.

A palm strike reopened the fractures in her skull.

Down.

Adapt.

Stand.

Eris stopped wiping away the tears.

There was no point.

The Theater blurred behind them.

Veydras watched Eris become a process.

Stand.

Break.

Adapt.

Stand.

Break.

Adapt.

Every cycle less human.

Every cycle more war.

Discordia had found the cruelest possible opponent for Eris.

Eris herself.

Eventually Discordia hit her across the face.

Eris went down.

Counterdoctrine activated.

She whispered—

"No."

It continued.

Eris curled onto her side.

"No."

Her leg hardened.

"Please…"

Her spine stabilized.

"No more."

Her left hand acquired enough strength to push.

Eris began standing.

She cried harder.

"Please…"

Veydras reached her.

He stopped several feet away.

His hands remained inside his sleeves.

Always.

Even now.

Especially now.

Eris looked up.

Saw him.

And broke.

Not a bone.

Something else.

"Veydras…"

The name was almost inaudible.

He crouched.

"I'm here."

Eris stared at his covered hand.

Then his face.

"Touch me."

Veydras stopped.

Noctis looked toward them.

Eris swallowed.

Blood ran from her mouth.

"Please."

Veydras's face went still.

Eris reached toward him with her left hand.

It shook too badly to finish the distance.

"Touch me."

He understood.

"No."

Eris's mouth opened.

The damaged voice produced a tiny sob.

"Please."

"No."

"Destabilize me."

Veydras looked away.

Eris grabbed the hem of his coat.

One hand.

Barely any strength.

"Please."

Veydras's jaw tightened.

"It won't work."

"I don't care."

"War will bring you back."

"Then do it again."

Veydras looked at her.

Eris was crying so hard she could barely see him.

"Do it again."

He said nothing.

"Keep doing it."

Her grip slipped.

Veydras caught the fabric before she lost it, keeping his skin away from hers.

"Until it stops."

His eyes closed.

"Eris…"

"I'm useless."

"No."

"She took it."

Veydras looked toward the severed arm.

Eris shook her head violently.

"Not that."

She pressed her left hand against the empty shoulder.

"This."

Her voice broke into air.

"My right hand."

She swallowed.

"My dominant arm."

Veydras crouched lower.

Eris looked at him like she needed him to understand before she disappeared.

"I can remember having it."

Her mouth trembled.

"I can't remember…"

She began crying again.

"…how it was mine."

Veydras's expression changed.

Eris looked toward Discordia.

"She took everything that told me how to use it."

Her left hand curled against her chest.

"War doesn't even know I'm supposed to have one."

Veydras said nothing.

"She was going to do the others."

"I know."

"I can't fight."

Veydras looked at the woman who had stood up after every impossible thing he had just watched.

Eris laughed weakly.

It was almost silent.

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Lie to me."

Veydras's eyes lowered.

Eris whispered, "I'm the God of War."

Her face twisted.

"I can't even be right-handed anymore."

Silence.

Then—

"Please let me be done."

Veydras looked at his hands.

For most of his existence, people had begged him not to touch them.

His father.

His mother.

Liora.

Mira.

Everyone.

He had built an entire life around keeping these hands away from other people.

And now somebody was begging for them.

Eris pulled weakly at his coat.

"Veydras."

He stood.

Her expression changed.

"No."

Veydras turned away.

"Veydras."

He kept walking.

Eris tried to follow.

Her leg failed.

She hit the ground.

"No."

He stopped.

Behind him, Eris dragged herself forward with one hand.

"Don't leave me."

Veydras's eyes closed.

The sentence destroyed something.

Noctis saw it happen.

Eris reached after him.

"Please."

Veydras turned.

Not toward her.

Toward Discordia.

Eris stared at his back.

Then understood.

"No…"

Veydras removed one glove.

Noctis's face changed.

"Veydras."

The glove fell.

His pale fingers flexed.

The ground beneath them lost the certainty of its own material.

"Don't."

Veydras took another step.

Discordia watched him.

Noctis moved closer.

"You are not stable enough for this."

Veydras removed the second glove.

"I know."

"Your last safe Fault Absolute application was nowhere near—"

"I know."

"Then listen to me."

Veydras looked over his shoulder.

Noctis stopped.

There were tears in Veydras's eyes.

Not many.

Enough.

"She asked me to kill her."

Noctis said nothing.

Veydras looked back at Discordia.

"I'm going to kill the reason she asked."
