Chapter — The Invitation
Noctis Arquen became powerful enough that reality began treating his decisions as precedent.
That was when the Continuum Concord noticed him.
He had been standing inside the Unlit Archive one moment.
Then he wasn't.
There was no portal.
No spatial distortion.
No Temporal Energy.
No Causality shift.
Nothing moved him.
Noctis simply found himself separated from everything he understood.
He looked around.
There was no floor.
No sky.
No distance.
Calling it a place felt inaccurate.
Places had relationships to other places.
This did not.
Noctis reached outward with his senses.
Nothing answered.
No Binary Energy.
No Chaos.
No Logic.
No Null.
Not even the subtle pressure of absence that accompanied the void.
There was simply—
nothing to measure.
For perhaps the first time in his life, Noctis couldn't determine an exchange rate.
That bothered him.
Then a voice came from behind him.
"Noctis Arquen."
Noctis turned immediately.
Something stood there.
Or appeared to.
Noctis felt no energy from it.
Not suppressed energy.
Not concealed energy.
None.
The figure had no stable features. Every attempt to focus on it produced something slightly different, as though his mind was completing an image reality itself had refused to provide.
Noctis stared.
"Who are you?"
The entity answered without moving.
"The Observer."
Noctis went still.
He had seen that name before.
The Apocryphon had spent ages identifying little more than the fact that it existed in records where it shouldn't.
Noctis looked around again.
"This isn't the Aetherial Interstice."
"No."
"Where are we?"
The Observer replied, "Between things that believe they are separate."
Noctis frowned.
"That's deliberately unhelpful."
"It is accurate."
Noctis looked directly at it.
The Observer left no pressure against reality.
No displacement.
No causal footprint.
If Noctis looked away, he suspected there would be no evidence anything had ever stood there.
Then he understood why the Apocryphon struggled with it.
The Observer did not conventionally exist.
It was an imagined presence.
A projection without a corresponding object.
Something pure enough in abstraction that reality had nothing physical to record.
Noctis's expression tightened.
"You're imaginary."
The Observer answered simply.
"Yes."
Noctis stared for several seconds.
Then he smiled faintly.
"That's inconvenient."
The Observer ignored the remark.
"The Continuum Concord has reviewed your development."
Noctis's smile vanished.
The Observer continued.
"Your authority over Equivalence has exceeded the expected limits of an unappointed entity."
Noctis said nothing.
"Your control over Recompense has reached divine qualification."
Something appeared between them.
Not an object.
A designation.
Words suspended without occupying space.
DIVINE APPOINTMENT OFFER
NOCTIS ARQUEN
PROPOSED TITLE: GOD OF RECOMPENSE
Noctis read it once.
Then again.
He almost laughed.
The Observer asked, "Do you accept?"
Noctis looked toward it.
"What does acceptance require?"
"Recognition of Continuum Concord authority."
There it was.
Noctis's expression became calm.
"And service?"
"When required."
"Obedience?"
"When required."
Noctis nodded slowly.
The Observer waited.
Noctis looked back at the title.
GOD OF RECOMPENSE
He had spent ages becoming strong enough to deserve it.
Some part of him wanted the name.
That irritated him.
Noctis asked, "If I refuse?"
"Your authority remains your own."
"No punishment?"
"None."
Noctis raised an eyebrow. "That's surprisingly civilized."
The Observer replied, "Refusal has consequences."
Noctis smiled.
"Everything does."
For the first time, the Observer seemed to pause.
Noctis looked at the designation one final time.
Then he reached toward it.
The title reacted.
Reality, somewhere impossibly far beneath them, seemed prepared to recognize him.
Noctis closed his hand.
The divine designation disappeared.
"I decline."
The Observer watched him.
Noctis continued, "I have no interest in becoming a god if the title belongs to someone else before it belongs to me."
Silence.
Then another designation appeared.
Smaller.
Not divine appointment.
Recognition.
LORD OF RECOMPENSE
Noctis stared at it.
"What is this?"
The Observer answered, "A title without ownership."
Noctis looked toward it.
"You expect me to accept that?"
"No."
Noctis smiled.
"Good."
The designation remained anyway.
Noctis could feel something subtly change.
Not power.
Acknowledgment.
Reality had been given a name for what he already was.
Lord of Recompense.
The Observer began to fade.
Noctis stepped forward.
"Wait."
The figure stopped.
Noctis asked the question Veydras would have asked first.
"What are you observing?"
The entity remained silent.
Noctis's eyes narrowed.
"The Archaverses?"
Nothing.
"The Aetherial Interstice?"
Still nothing.
Noctis took another step.
"Or something above it?"
The Observer disappeared.
No flash.
No transition.
It simply stopped being imagined there.
Noctis stood alone.
Then the Unlit Archive returned around him.
Veydras was still seated at the table.
He looked up.
"You disappeared."
Noctis adjusted his coat.
"I noticed."
Veydras stared at him.
"Where?"
Noctis sat down.
"I don't know."
That got Veydras's attention.
Noctis looked toward the Apocryphon.
Its black slabs were trembling.
For the first time since they had acquired it, the relic displayed only one message.
LOCATION: NOT APPLICABLE
Veydras slowly looked at Noctis.
Noctis smiled faintly.
"I met the Observer."
The lamp flickered.
Veydras leaned back.
"And?"
Noctis looked at the title now resting beside his name within the Archive's records.
LORD OF RECOMPENSE
"They offered me a job."
Veydras stared at him.
Noctis added, "I declined."
Veydras nodded.
"Good."
Noctis frowned.
"That's all?"
Veydras returned to his work.
"I would've been annoyed if you accepted."
Noctis smiled.
For some reason, that meant more than the title.
