Chapter 17 - The Grief that Returned

Sorrow opened her eyes.

She was still standing.

For one second, she did not understand why that frightened her.

The Karmic Battlefield stretched around her exactly as it had before.

Vhal Corren's body lay several hundred meters away.

Irix Vale was gone.

Black Mourning had collapsed.

Karma stood in front of her.

Alive.

Sorrow stared at him.

No.

That wasn't right.

She had felt his heart stop.

She had watched every continuation collapse.

She had stood over his body.

She had—

Sorrow's breath caught.

Her hand moved instinctively toward her chest.

There was no wound.

But she remembered one.

Not pain.

Absence.

A moment where there had been no next heartbeat.

No next thought.

No next breath.

Nothing.

Sorrow whispered, "No."

Karma smiled.

Sorrow took one step backward.

Karma said, "There it is."

Sorrow's eyes widened.

Karma continued, "You finally noticed."

One of the five Generals behind her looked between them.

The General asked, "Chair?"

Sorrow did not answer.

Her hands had begun trembling.

That frightened her more than Karma did.

Sorrow was the God of Sadness.

She understood grief better than perhaps any living being in the Martial Division.

She understood the difference between survival and return.

This was not survival.

Sorrow whispered, "I died."

Karma's smile widened.

Karma said, "Very easily."

The words struck harder than any attack.

Sorrow looked toward the place where she remembered Karma's corpse falling.

Nothing remained there.

Karma walked closer.

Sorrow immediately stepped back.

Karma noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Karma said, "You killed me."

Sorrow stared at him.

Karma continued, "That part was real."

Sorrow said nothing.

Karma tilted his head.

Karma said, "You should be proud."

Sorrow's breathing quickened.

Karma continued, "You stopped my heart. You denied my continuations. You even forced reality to stop correcting around me."

His eyes brightened faintly.

Karma said, "Very few people have ever managed that."

Sorrow asked, "Then how are you standing?"

Karma laughed softly.

Karma replied, "Wrong question."

Sorrow froze.

Karma looked directly into her eyes.

Karma said, "How are you?"

Silence.

Sorrow's shadow twitched beneath her.

Then she understood.

Grief.

Her own authority.

Reality had mourned her.

And because Sorrow's existence carried an extraordinary concentration of grief, reality had refused to accept her loss immediately.

It had restored her once.

Not because she had commanded it.

Not because she had activated a technique.

Because the structure of her own divinity rejected the conclusion.

Sorrow looked down at her hands.

They were shaking harder now.

Sorrow whispered, "Grief returned me."

Karma said, "Once."

Sorrow's head snapped toward him.

He smiled.

Karma said, "That's the part frightening you."

Sorrow said nothing.

Karma continued, "You don't know whether it happens twice."

Sorrow's composure broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

Sorrow turned toward her Generals.

Sorrow shouted, "Emergency extraction."

All five straightened instantly.

General Caelis Ren raised one hand.

Binary Energy erupted around him in perfect geometric formations.

Caelis's specialty was Ordered Creation.

Anything he constructed through Binary Energy possessed an enforced sequence.

Wall before impact.

Shield before projectile.

Bridge before crossing.

The system itself prioritized the correct order of his creations.

Caelis said, "Formation Aegis."

Millions of white-blue panels appeared between Sorrow and Karma.

General Oryn Tess moved beside him.

Oryn governed Binary Duplication.

He could take one valid structure and reproduce it repeatedly as long as every copy obeyed the original code.

One shield became ten.

Ten became ten thousand.

Ten thousand became millions.

General Seraph Vale raised both hands.

His Binary expression was called Perfect Assembly.

Matter around him broke into organized components and reconstructed itself into weapons faster than ordinary fabrication systems could process instructions.

Rifles.

Lances.

Orbital cannons.

Artificial satellites.

Everything formed in immaculate rows.

The fourth General, Isolde Marr, specialized in Command Priority.

Her Binary Energy established hierarchical control over allied constructs.

Every weapon.

Every soldier.

Every formation.

Every defensive system.

All of it answered her with virtually no latency.

The fifth General, Darius Sol, possessed perhaps the strangest Binary specialization of them all.

Correction Architecture.

If a Binary structure was damaged, reality compared it against its original design and attempted to restore the valid version.

The five had not accompanied Sorrow because she needed help attending a meeting.

They were there because the Martial Division did not permit the Chair to the Epithet to travel unprotected.

And beyond the Karmic Battlefield waited considerably more.

The Metaship.

Its connected operational span exceeded a supercluster.

Its military population was measured at approximately 6.4 octillion active personnel, excluding automated systems, reserve populations, industrial crews and inactive transport sectors.

Almost none of those people would ever see Sorrow.

Most had been stationed aboard for years.

Some had been born inside military habitation systems large enough to contain entire nations.

And now every one of them received the same priority signal.

CHAIR TO THE EPITHET — EXTRACTION FAILURE

THREAT CLASSIFICATION: DIVINE

RECOVERY PRIORITY: ABSOLUTE

The Metaship changed.

Entire linked sections rotated.

Weapons platforms the size of solar systems aligned.

Transit corridors sealed.

Thousands of carriers detached.

Command vessels unfolded from positions that had previously looked like stars.

Then another message crossed the Martial Division.

32,000 GENERAL-CLASS OFFICERS AUTHORIZED FOR IMMEDIATE REINFORCEMENT.

No one asked whether that number was excessive.

The person being recovered was Sorrow.

Karma looked toward the sky.

The edge of the Karmic Battlefield began filling with Binary light.

Karma smiled.

Karma said, "That's adorable."

Sorrow shouted, "Move!"

The five Generals attacked simultaneously.

Caelis created barriers faster than Karma could visibly move.

Oryn duplicated them.

Darius repaired them the instant stress appeared.

Seraph constructed enough weaponry to blot out entire regions of the battlefield.

Isolde synchronized all of it into one firing sequence.

The first volley struck.

The Karmic Battlefield disappeared beneath white-blue light.

The impact expanded farther than galaxies.

Then farther still.

Sorrow did not watch.

She ran.

Space folded beneath her feet.

Her shadow stretched forward, creating corridors of darkness through which continuation remained under her control.

She crossed impossible distances.

For one second, Karma was gone.

Then reality moved.

Sorrow stopped.

Karma was standing in front of her.

Her blood went cold.

She turned sharply and crossed another impossible distance.

Karma was there.

Sorrow teleported.

Karma was there.

She tore through a dimensional layer.

Karma was already waiting.

Sorrow whispered, "You're not moving."

Karma smiled.

Karma said, "Correct."

Sorrow finally understood.

He wasn't pursuing her.

Reality was repositioning her.

Every time Sorrow created distance, the world quietly corrected the relationship between them.

The location changed.

The conclusion did not.

Karma remained where Karma preferred to be.

Sorrow's breathing became ragged.

Behind them, the five Generals continued attacking.

A thousand Binary lances struck Karma from every direction.

Reality bent.

The attacks curved.

Some missed.

Others struck locations Karma had never occupied.

One weapon reached him.

Karma flicked one finger.

The weapon vanished.

So did the space behind it.

The destruction continued outward.

A star disappeared.

Then another.

Several distant systems ceased registering.

General Oryn stared.

Oryn said, "One finger..."

Karma looked toward him.

Oryn disappeared.

No explosion.

No body.

One moment he was there.

The next, Ordered Duplication no longer possessed an operator.

Caelis screamed, "OREN!"

Karma corrected him.

Karma said, "Oryn."

Then Caelis's shields collapsed.

Karma moved one hand.

The millions of barriers reversed orientation.

General Caelis had just enough time to understand what was happening.

His own Ordered Creation obeyed.

Shield before impact.

Unfortunately, Karma had changed which side counted as protection.

Millions of defensive walls closed inward.

Caelis vanished inside his own perfect sequence.

Blood leaked between the seams.

Sorrow heard him die.

She kept running.

Seraph constructed an artificial sun.

Then ten.

Then a hundred.

Binary code wrapped around each one, stabilizing them into weapons.

Seraph shouted, "Chair! GO!"

He launched all of them.

Karma looked upward.

The stars stopped.

Not frozen.

They simply lost urgency.

Their trajectories bent.

Their fusion slowed.

Their light faded.

Karma claime they where, "Too organized."

Then he snapped his fingers.

Chaos entered the formation.

One sun moved backward.

Another collapsed sideways.

Three fused together.

Seven detonated early.

The resulting blast swallowed Seraph before he could construct another defense.

Darius attempted to correct him.

Correction Architecture activated.

Reality searched for Seraph's original valid state.

Karma tilted his head.

Karma said, "Incorrect."

The correction failed.

Darius stared at his hands.

Karma appeared beside him.

Darius whispered, "Impossible."

Karma touched his shoulder.

Karma replied, "Frequently."

Darius disappeared.
