Chapter 11 - chapter9 Checkmate in the Dark

Sophia's sudden shift in mood and her direct challenge froze Dimitri for a moment. The crimson glow in her eyes and her unshakable confidence conveyed that the surrender on the bed and the persona she displayed now were entirely different.

She straightened, wrapping the sheet more tightly around her, and looked Dimitri in the eyes, her voice cold and steady:

"Why should I make the coffee? You will. You may claim me, Dimitri, but you will never make me a servant."

A crooked smile appeared at the corner of Dimitri's lips. Surprised yet secretly pleased by Sophia's audacity, he felt an even stronger pull toward her.

A Strange Change

Dimitri stepped toward the kitchen. His bare, well-toned muscles glistened faintly in the dim light. While switching on the coffee maker, he muttered softly:

Surprise: "Having a Major make coffee would probably be the biggest mistake of my life."

Acknowledgment: "You are right, Sophia. You were born to reign, not to obey orders."

A few moments later, Dimitri returned carrying two mugs of coffee. Placing one in front of Sophia, he stood close. The steam from the coffee mingled with their heated breaths, creating an almost tangible tension between them.

Sophia took a small sip, letting the slightly bitter warmth awaken her senses. She held the mug with both hands, her gaze piercing into Dimitri's, and asked in a calm but sharp voice:

"I don't know… tell me, what were your parents like?"

At the question, Dimitri's hand tightened over the mug. A shadow crossed his face, one he rarely revealed to the world. The room fell into a tense, almost storm-before-calm silence.

Dimitri turned to the window, where the snow still fell, and his voice, now cold as ice, began to narrate.

Dimitri's Hidden Past

Forgotten Nobility: "My father was no ordinary man, Sophia. He came from a lineage whose name once shook all of Moscow. But politics took everything from us. Our palace stood proud… now it is just ruins."

Mother's Fate: "My mother… she was a pianist. Her hands always carried music. But when my father was betrayed, that music turned into crying. I even saw that royal blood begging in the streets."

Beginning of Darkness: "I did not choose this path for pleasure. Mercy and love are not in my vocabulary because my parents' fate taught me one thing—you are either the hunter or the hunted."

Dimitri turned back to Sophia. The 'psycho' edge in his eyes was now veiled by a strange melancholy. He knelt beside her, placing his strong hand over her knee, exactly where the strap of her precious heels ended.

"You see elegance in me, Sophia, but that elegance is written in blood and ashes. Now tell me, after hearing this from a Major, am I still just a killer… or something more?"

Sophia's gaze shifted from Dimitri's deep eyes to the darkness outside the window. Though his tragic story touched her, she revealed nothing. Calmly, she took the last sip of her coffee and simply said, "Nothing…" Yet Dimitri didn't realize that even in this situation, Sophia had not lost her professional edge.

Control Room Scene

At that very moment, many miles away, tension gripped a joint Russian-Bangladeshi military control room. The room was dimly lit, illuminated only by the blue glow of a dozen monitors.

A young officer sat there, exhaustion etched on his face, yet his focus unbroken. He typed frantically on the keyboard, trying to catch faint signals through his headphones.

Location: Secret base of the Russian-Bangladesh joint intelligence unit.

Target: Missing Major Sophia.

Signal: A weak pulse from a tiny tracker hidden in Sophia's Cesare Paciotti heel suddenly appeared on the control room map.

The young officer straightened, excited. He shouted to his senior:

"Sir! Major Sophia's location has been detected. She appears to be at a private estate near Moscow. But the signal is very unstable… seems she's very close to a jammer."

Sophia's Secret Move

Meanwhile, in Dimitri's bedroom, Sophia lightly rubbed the heel against the floor, knowing that the more Dimitri indulged in his story or ignored her, the higher her chances of escape.

She turned to Dimitri and smiled mysteriously:

"Your parents' story is very cinematic, Dimitri. But do you know? Sometimes a common prison is safer than a royal palace."

Dimitri frowned, trying to gauge whether she was mocking him or hiding some other signal behind her smile.

Within seconds, his sharp gaze landed on Sophia's foot. His criminal instincts flared. Her confidence and the position of her foot made him suspicious.

Without a word, Dimitri lunged like a predator. Before Sophia could react, he grasped one foot firmly. Just as she was about to scream, Dimitri carefully examined the bottom of her Cesare Paciotti heel.

He noticed a tiny, hair-thin crack. Pulling a small knife from his pocket, he pried open the special section of the heel. Inside was a miniature, glowing blue high-tech tracker chip.

Dimitri's Rage and Reaction

Dimitri's jaw clenched. He held the chip in front of Sophia's eyes. His voice returned to that terrifying 'psycho' tone.

Chip Destroyed: Without hesitation, he dropped the chip on the floor and crushed it with his boot. The blue glow went out, cutting off Sophia's last contact with the control room.

Threat: He leaned close to her, growling, "You sent your location using my story? I knew you were dangerous, but now I see… even more cunning than a venomous snake!"

Control Room Situation

Meanwhile, miles away in the control room, the young officer recoiled. The faint red dot on the monitor suddenly vanished, and the screen went black. He screamed frantically:

"Sir! The signal is lost! Major Sophia's tracker is permanently offline! Mark the last location, quick!"At that peak moment of tension inside the control room—where everyone feared for Major Sophia's life—the young officer froze in confusion when he noticed the senior officer smiling strangely.

He looked at him, startled, and stammered,

"Sir… why are you smiling? The signal is gone. Ma'am Sophia could be in serious danger!"

The senior officer leaned back in his chair, a mysterious smile on his face. In a calm voice, he said,

"I'm smiling because Dimitri did exactly what Sophia wanted him to do."

The young officer couldn't understand. The senior officer began to explain.

Target Achieved:

"Do you really think Sophia is such an amateur that she didn't know Dimitri would find that chip? That chip was bait."

Double Game:

"When Dimitri crushed the chip with his own hands, it released a special shock-wave signal into Dimitri's own local network. Now we're not just tracking Sophia—we're tracking Dimitri's entire underground server system."

Sophia's Bravery:

"She deliberately put herself in danger to use Dimitri's ego against him. Dimitri thinks he destroyed the chip and won… but in reality, he opened the main gate of his fortress for us."

The senior officer pointed at the screen.

"Look now. Not just a single red dot—Dimitri's hidden locations across Moscow are lighting up on the map. Sophia is not just a Major…"

Meanwhile, when Sophia noticed Dimitri had stepped into another room, lost in the intoxication of his supposed victory, she used the opportunity.

Dimitri believed he had completely cut her off by destroying the tracker. But he had no idea Sophia carried another hidden backup communication device.

Quickly and quietly, Sophia made a call to the control room. Her voice was steady and professional.

"I'm fine. Do not come now. Repeat—don't come yet."

The young officer in the control room felt relieved hearing her voice, but the senior officer listened carefully as Sophia continued explaining her plan.

Mission Profile:

"Dimitri thinks he has won. He is taking me to his most secret safe house. If I'm rescued now, the real heads of his royal network will remain out of reach."

High Risk:

"Let him believe I am under his control. I want to stay with him and see this empire to its very end. When the time is right, I will signal you myself."

With that, Sophia cut the line.

At that very moment, Dimitri entered the room. Sophia had already erased every trace of the call and was sitting on the bed again like a mysterious queen.

Dimitri walked toward her and said,

"Who are you thinking about, Sophia? Your rescue team? By the time they arrive, you'll be far beyond their reach."

Sophia smiled slightly and looked straight into his eyes.

"I'm not waiting for anyone, Dimitri. I want to see where the end of your darkness lies. Come… won't you show me the ruins of your royal palace?"

Dimitri was slightly surprised by her sudden change in behavior, but his pride and ego blinded him. He failed to realize that Sophia was gambling with her own life—to trap him completely. When Sophia arrived at Dimitri's secret base, her eyes widened in disbelief. From the outside, it looked like nothing more than an impenetrable forest wrapped in fog and mountains. But hidden within it was an astonishing modern empire.

Looking around in awe, Sophia murmured,

"This is beyond anything I imagined… it must have cost at least 200 billion dollars to build this place."

Description of the Mansion

Magnitude:

Built into the ridges of the mountain, the structure was a marvel of modern architecture. The palace of glass and steel glowed with blue laser security lines across its walls.

Luxury:

The chandeliers looked as if they were made of real diamonds. Gold-plated pillars and expensive Persian carpets on the floors pushed the limits of extravagance.

Technology:

Robotic guards and surveillance drones patrolled everywhere. It did not look like a mafia hideout—it looked like the secret headquarters of a highly advanced nation.

Sophia realized that no "ordinary criminal" or "street fighter" could ever amass this level of wealth. Dimitri's claim of royal blood did not seem entirely false anymore. This 200-billion-dollar palace stood as proof.

Dimitri's Reaction

Seeing Sophia's amazement, Dimitri placed a hand on her shoulder. His voice carried pride and satisfaction.

"Why are you surprised, Major? I told you—there is no ordinary dust in my blood. There is the pain of a lost empire. This palace is only a small fragment of the throne that was taken from us. People call me a killer, but in truth, I am rebuilding the world that was stolen from me."

He leaned close to her ear and added softly,

"Welcome, Sophia. You are not just my captive now—you are the only queen of this 200-billion-dollar palace."

Sophia remained calm on the outside, but inside, a storm raged.

So much money… so much power. Who really is Dimitri? What force stands behind him?

Her astonishment quickly turned into sharp anger when she stopped in front of a giant portrait hanging in a hidden gallery of the palace.

The moment she saw it, her trained intelligence instincts ignited.

It was none other than Viktor Alexeyevich—known in the international crime world as a Mafia Lord and listed among Interpol's most wanted.

Through clenched teeth, Sophia said,

"Viktor! He's at the top of Interpol's most wanted list. You… you're connected to him?"

Dimitri calmly stood beside her. There was strange pride in his eyes.

"That's my elder brother, Sophia. The world knows him as a mafia lord. But the real truth is—he is a very high-ranking officer of the FSB. He doesn't just control the underworld; he manages the dark side of the state itself."

Sophia felt her mind struggling to process the revelation. But the next piece of information hit her even harder.

Dimitri pointed to the portrait of a beautiful yet mysterious woman beside Viktor. Her eyes were sharp like a predator's.

"And his wife—my sister-in-law—Alia Isronova Zarin. She is known as the 'Mafia Godmother.' Interestingly, she is a former CIA agent. Her blood carries a strange mix of Bangladesh and Russia. She is the real mastermind behind this entire empire."

Sophia's Realization

Sophia understood she was not dealing with a simple drug lord or criminal. She was standing in the middle of a triangle of terrifying power:

Dimitri — the symbol of aristocracy and authority

Viktor — the bridge between the FSB and the underworld

Zarin — a Bangladeshi-Russian mastermind with CIA roots

This 200-billion-dollar empire was not just business—it was an international power game.

In a trembling voice, Sophia asked,

"So you're not just using Bangladesh… your roots are there too? Alia… she's Bangladeshi?"

Dimitri stepped closer and twisted a strand of her hair between his fingers.

"She is a legend, Sophia. And you have arrived here with a destiny much like hers. Now do you understand why your control room officers won't come to save you? Because in this game… we write the rules."
