Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: A New Rank

Chapter 40: A New Rank

The System updated on a Thursday morning, two days after the meeting at the Meridian outpost.

Jonathan was on the rooftop of the safe house doing movement drills, not the frantic terror-fueled practice of his early Gate days but something deliberate. He had been working with the integrated divine energy the way a musician works a new instrument: learning its range, its resonance points, the places where effort became inefficient and flow became possible.

He was mid-movement when the notification appeared.

[SYSTEM UPDATE — CLASSIFICATION REVISION]

[PREVIOUS STATUS: E-RANK (PROVISIONAL)]

[NEW STATUS: UNCLASSIFIED]

[NOTE: CURRENT CAPABILITY EXCEEDS ALL EXISTING RANK PARAMETERS]

[RECOMMENDATION: MANUAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED]

[MANUAL ASSESSMENT AUTHORITY: UNAVAILABLE — NO APPLICABLE GOVERNING BODY]

He stopped moving.

He looked at the notification for a while.

[ALTERNATIVE DESIGNATION ASSIGNED]

[STATUS: SOVEREIGN-CLASS]

[DEFINITION: ENTITY WHOSE CAPABILITY DERIVES FROM INTEGRATED DIVINE AND MORTAL ENERGY, OPERATING OUTSIDE STANDARD GUILD CLASSIFICATION HIERARCHY]

[NOTE: FIRST RECORDED INSTANCE OF THIS DESIGNATION]

He stood on the rooftop in the morning cold and read it twice.

Then he went downstairs and made breakfast.

Seraphina was at the table with her maps. She looked up. She had learned, sometime in the past weeks, to read his face in a way that he was still adjusting to, the way she tracked the small signals below the stillness.

"You have a face," she said.

"The System reclassified me," he said. He set water to boil. "Sovereign-class. First recorded instance."

She put her pen down. "What does that mean, practically?"

"I don't know yet." He found mugs. He set one in front of her without asking whether she wanted it. She did not comment on this either. "The existing rank parameters don't apply. Which means the Guild's existing threat assessment protocols don't apply either."

"Both useful and complicated," she said.

"Both," he agreed.

He sat down across from her. She turned her maps toward him.

It took him four seconds to understand what she'd found.

"She's building a Gate network," he said.

"Every artifact she's placed or tried to acquire, they're node points. She's been constructing a network on the mortal plane since before you were involved." She tapped five locations. "These are confirmed. Three more, based on the Tyrant's movement. If she activates them simultaneously—"

"She doesn't need a vessel," Jonathan said. "She walks through directly."

Seraphina met his eyes.

"Yes."

He looked at the map. He thought about a city of millions of people and a god of hunger walking into the middle of it. He thought about the amber seal and the sanctum. None of that would matter if Aethel arrived in her own form.

"How long?" he said.

"Weeks. Less if she's accelerating."

He was quiet for a moment.

"We need Lilith's resources," he said.

Seraphina looked at the map. "She said two weeks."

"I know. But we need to move faster." He looked at her. "Can you get a message to her safely?"

She met his gaze. Something moved in her face, not the map-reading focus, something more personal than that. A brief unguarded flicker.

"Yes," she said.

"Tell her we found what Aethel is building." He stood. "And tell her she needs to bring the Guild Master."

Seraphina looked up at him from her seat. The angle put him above her in the small kitchen, the morning light behind him. She was looking at him the way she sometimes looked at the maps, like she was memorizing something she needed to keep.

"Jonathan," she said.

He waited.

She held his gaze for a moment. Then she seemed to make the same decision she made on the mountain road.

"I'll send the message now," she said.

She reached for her comm.

Jonathan took his tea to the window and looked out at the city in the morning light. He thought about what it would take to protect something you couldn't see all of. He thought about two women, one who had moved a mug two inches toward his hand, and one who had noted something for the record and then kept working. He thought about what it meant that both of them were still here.

He thought about this precisely and carefully.

Then he set it down, in the part of himself that had learned to be patient, and he began to plan for the divine crisis that was coming.

The System hummed in the back of his awareness, entirely his own.

[OBJECTIVE: LOCATE REMAINING NODE POINTS]

[SECONDARY: ESTABLISH INSTITUTIONAL ALLIANCE]

[LONG-TERM: PREVENT DIVINE INCURSION]

He drank his tea.

He began to plan.
