Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Saturday - A Mother's Love

In the front lawn, where only moments ago green grass glittered under polished stone pathways, chaos reigned. Cloaked men moved like smoke—black hoods, red eyes beneath masks—slashing and kicking at heavily built men in tight black t-shirts emblazoned with a stylized "V." These were Asher's covert guards, men trained for war, but even they seemed overwhelmed.

Blood painted the lawn a deep, vivid red. Splinters of wood and torn clothing littered the ground. The air smelled of smoke and iron and betrayal.

Seraphine's stomach convulsed as she stepped out, baby Daniel safe in her arms. Lucien's heart plunged. She and Lucien screamed together:

"DANIEL!"

In that instant, chaos turned urgent.

Seraphine bolted toward the house, Lucien on her heels. He heard him roar her name, but she didn't slow until she burst through the wide glass doors and into a torrent of screaming heralds—retainers and panic—carrying the wounded, pushing through smoke to Asher's stone fireplace foyer.

Through the haze, Amelia emerged—eyes wide, face streaked with tears and ash—clutching baby Daniel with one hand while the other held Elora's hand. She was wounded very badly at both the leg and arm, but Ethan was still clutched in her arms tightly.

"Sera—take him! Lucien block them. Let me take them to the car. " she cried, voice devastated and urgent. "Daniel!" Seraphine gasped. Elora seemed bewildered but protected, stepping aside so Seraphine could accept her baby. The protective circle of family grew wide.

"Wait, DRIVER! DRIVER!" her voice torn through the chaos.

A brown-suited man appeared—hands shaking—but he nodded and sprinted ahead of the women. Doors slammed open on a black sedan idling at the curb.

Seraphine ran forward, pressed Daniel into her arms. Amelia ran, as she helped a shaking Elora with her own toddler son in tow—Ethan, bright-eyed and confused. He clung to his mother's hand, wearing a sleeping romper.

"Asher! Lucien! Guard them and lead them to the car!" Amelia's shouted, voice fracturing but firm.

Seraphine swung along with Daniel into the back seat.

Asher bounded forward, lifting Ethan on his arm, then running towards the car and placing him beside Seraphine, who immediately kept an arm around the crying baby and tried to console him. While Lucien behind them helped the limping Elora get to the car. He slammed the door as soon as she sat her head resting on Seraphine's shoulder, her eyes hiding the pain.

The driver eased onto the gravel. He looked over his shoulder, eyes tense. "Ma'am?" he said quietly, catching Seraphine's gaze through the rear mirror.

"Go! Now!" she said, voice trembling but resolute. He floored the accelerator. The tires screeched.

In that momentary glance before the car pulled away, Lucien looked into Seraphine's eyes and found a spark of something unbreakable. Teary, terrified—but something remained. A hint of hope. A trace of fierce love.

They sped down the driveway while behind them Asher's men fought with utmost courage. Seraphine held Daniel against her heart with one hand, while the other rocked the weeping Ethan.

Seraphine, voice hoarse, "When will my troubles give me a break?" but she tightened her arms around her son and looked over to smile faintly at Elora who collapsed out of exhaustion.

The mansion's gates blurred into darkness, but the sirens of arriving emergency vehicles echoed. They turned onto a forested path—road lit by moonlight and fire trucks arriving too late. Seraphine's, whispered reassurance. "You're safe," he said into Daniel's ear. For once, the baby cooed at his whispered words.

Miles away, water and trees replaced burnt earth. Under the canopy of deadly swings of bats, Lucien approached Asher and fighting back to back with him.

As the sedan door opened, Elora stirred and scooped Daniel gently, eyes still sleepy but steady. She brushed a lock of scooted hair from Seraphine's forehead before she got off.

Ethan toddled forward, holding her mother's hand in the car, pointing to Daniel fast asleep in Elora's arms.

Seraphine offered a faint smile before she got out of the car to grab both the kids; letting the limping Elora get out. She reached her hand out to Elora and helped her up with great difficulty. "We're safe," she breathed.

They all entered Seraphine's bedroom. She placed baby Daniel on the bed along with Ethan, before going out again to help Elora climb the stairs. She led Elora into another room and called the nurses. And while they were treating Elora, Seraphine kept Ethan busy telling him stories and rocking him before eventually placing him against her own baby.

Ethan toddled over and placed the family baby blanket gently into Seraphine's lap. She blinked back tears and wrapped her arms around them.

On the other hand,

The air crackled with tension as the two groups faced off, each side brimming with adrenaline and aggression. With a roar, the first punch was thrown, connecting with a resounding thud against a jaw. The man staggered back, but before he could recover, another opponent lunged forward, delivering a swift kick to his midsection that sent him crashing to the ground.

"Get him!" one of the attackers shouted, rallying his team. They surged forward, fists flying like a storm. A hard right hook landed squarely on another man's cheek, causing him to spin and fall, his body hitting the pavement with a dull thud.

The sound of grunts and shouts filled the air as a third assailant swung a metal bat, the weight of it glinting ominously in the light. He aimed for an opponent's knee, but the target sidestepped just in time, retaliating with a powerful uppercut that connected with the bat-wielder's chin. The impact sent the bat spiraling from his hands, clattering onto the ground.

In the chaos, two men grappled fiercely, each trying to gain the upper hand. One threw a series of quick jabs, landing a couple of solid hits to the face, while the other countered with a well-placed knee strike to the stomach, forcing his opponent to double over. Seizing the moment, he followed up with an elbow strike to the back of the head, sending his foe sprawling.

Nearby, a flurry of kicks erupted as one fighter unleashed a combination of swift roundhouse kicks, each one meant to incapacitate. The first kick connected with a man's ribcage, eliciting a grunt of pain. The second aimed for the head, but the target ducked just in time, retaliating with a fierce punch that landed squarely on the kicker's jaw.

The fight raged on, each side refusing to back down. A fourth attacker grabbed a bat from the ground, swinging it wildly. The whoosh of the bat sliced through the air, narrowly missing a man who ducked and rolled away. With a quick recovery, he sprang back up and unleashed a flurry of punches, connecting with the bat-wielder's ribs and jaw.

Amidst the chaos, one fighter found himself cornered, surrounded by three opponents. With a fierce determination, he swung a heavy fist, catching one in the stomach before delivering a sharp kick to another's knee. The third attacker retaliated with a bat swing, but he ducked just in time, the bat slicing through the air where his head had been moments before.

As the fight continued, the sounds of fists hitting flesh, the clatter of the bat against the pavement, and the shouts of exertion echoed through the night. Each man fought with everything he had, the lines between friend and foe blurring as the fight spiraled into a full-blown melee.

Finally, with a powerful surge, one side managed to gain the upper hand, coordinating their efforts to push back their opponents. A final round of punches and kicks rained down, each blow resonating with the fervour of their struggle. The last opponent fell to the ground, panting and defeated, as the victors stood tall, breathing heavily but triumphant, Asher and Lucien in the lead.

Asher appeared, tall in a long coat, looking between the house, the burned mansion behind them, and the small cuts on Lucien's arms.

He nodded once. "They retreated," he said. "They know we're not unprepared."

Later that night, they sat around the glass-walled living room, lantern light flickering. Lucien poured hot tea. Estranged memories of the flame's destruction pressed on his chest, yet there was something sacred in the candlelit moment.

Asher was curled in the bed beside him, offering comfort without words. A drone buzzed overhead—security never slept.

Lucien whispered, "I want to kill them all, Ash. They risked our families life!"

"Sleep Lucien. They are gone.

"What about Seraphine and Elora?"

"Sera and Elora are safe. I called them."
