Chapter 71 - Chapter 70: Galaxy-Eyes Combo Analysis! This is What You Call a Galaxy!

Yuma Tsukumo and Astral couldn't even begin to imagine it. Facing a board like that, with a lockdown like Kali Yuga in play, even they couldn't think of a single way to continue their combo.

In the ZEXAL World.

After listening to the simple combo explanations for the Utopia deck, the Xyz duelists felt their own dueling logic and possibilities expanding.

In contrast, Kite Tenjo let out a long breath and gave a bitter, helpless smile. It was only now that he understood. His opponent, Yuma Tsukumo, had been dueling just like him—relying on years of experience with his own deck to pilot an unfamiliar one. This kind of experience could be applied to any new deck.

But that was precisely why Kite felt even more helpless. They were both in the same unfamiliar situation, so why did he still lose? Where exactly did he go wrong?

Kite Tenjo: "Mr. Yu, could you please teach me the combo strategies for the Galaxy-Eyes deck from your world?"

Kite Tenjo: "I want to learn! I need to learn, Mr. Yu!"

Kite Tenjo: "I want to improve so badly!"

In the Main World.

Yusei Hoshi saw the barrage of messages from Kite Tenjo flooding the chat. He had just finished with the basic Utopia analysis and was originally planning to move on to the next archetype—perhaps Zane Truesdale's Cyber Dragon, Alexis Rhodes' Cyber Angel, or Crow Hogan's Blackwing.

But seeing this, he decided he should first grant Kite's small wish. After all, given what they had already seen, a simple review of the core strategies should be more than enough to benefit Kite immensely.

Yusei Hoshi: "Since Kite has made such a request, I suppose I can take the trouble to find some videos on Galaxy-Eyes combo strategies for you."

Yusei Hoshi: "And for the duelists in the other worlds, don't just ignore this because it's not a deck you're interested in."

Yusei Hoshi: "You must understand that many core concepts in Duel Monsters are universal, no matter the deck. Searching, meeting conditions, generating resources, establishing a first-turn board with negates, breaking a board going second... and so on."

Yusei Hoshi: "Or perhaps..."

After a brief lecture from Yusei Hoshi, the duelists from the first four worlds listened with a dawning understanding. The more they heard, the more they realized the terrifying depth of the Higher World's dueling philosophy. The duelists from the other two worlds, not yet integrated into this happy family, could only continue to analyze the Utopia deck's combos and strategies on their own.

After his speech, Yusei quickly found the next target video and clicked play. The title appeared.

"For the Dragon-Obsessed Duelist! An Introductory MD Build Tutorial for the Soulful Galaxy-Eyes!"

As soon as the title appeared, the duelists from the DM, GX, and 5D's worlds knew what was happening. This was undoubtedly a request from Kite Tenjo, the loser of the previous deck test.

Seto Kaiba narrowed his eyes. For some reason, he felt a strange affinity for Kite Tenjo, or perhaps for Galaxy-Eyes itself. It might be because his own Blue-Eyes White Dragon deck also utilized the three-card Galaxy-Eyes engine. Or maybe it was simply because the Galaxy-Eyes dragons... were just so damn cool!

Wasn't that the same reason he was drawn to the power of Blue-Eyes White Dragon? As an absolute dragon fanatic, Seto Kaiba loved the Galaxy-Eyes archetype.

Another person with a soft spot for Galaxy-Eyes was Professor Crowler from the GX world. As a teacher, after chatting with the Xyz duelists, he had come to a profound realization: there was always someone better, a world beyond his own. There were so many things in other worlds that he had no knowledge of.

Yusei Fudo from 5D's was much calmer. Although his ace was a Dragon-Type monster, his deck mostly revolved around Level 5 and 7 monsters, and his own dragons were just as impressive-looking as Galaxy-Eyes. So he wasn't overly emotional, but he still knew he had to study the strategies.

While the duelists were lost in their own thoughts, the short video began.

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Welcome, welcome, all you duelists who've stumbled upon my short video. Since you're here, don't leave, because you are the coolest and most stylish duelist around!"

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Hahaha! All jokes aside, first, I want to congratulate all the student duelists on their summer vacation, and I wish all the working duelists promotions and prosperity! And to the female duelists, I wish... uh, wait, are there any female duelists watching my video?"

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Ahem, okay, no more messing around. Today, I'm bringing you an introductory tutorial for the Galaxy-Eyes deck in Master Duel. As everyone knows, the deck is called Galaxy-Eyes, but the archetypes within it are a bit disjointed. It's divided into the 'Photon' archetype, the 'Galaxy' archetype, and the 'Cipher' archetype! If you want to be even more specific, you can add a 'Galaxy-Eyes' archetype, since cards like Afterglow Dragon need a 'Galaxy-Eyes' monster to be summoned. A card like Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon belongs to both the 'Galaxy' and 'Photon' archetypes. I'm mentioning this beforehand because these distinctions are very important! Only by understanding this can we move on to the actual combo explanation!"

"..."

This simple introduction, outlining the deck's structure, immediately made the duelists from the six worlds understand why Kite Tenjo had been so lost at the beginning. Indeed, with such a mix of archetypes crammed into one deck, a single search could leave you wondering whether to grab a 'Photon' or a 'Galaxy' card.

On top of that, the dazzling array of Xyz monsters in the Extra Deck made many of the Xyz duelists' mouths water. This Galaxy-Eyes deck was a bit beyond their comprehension!

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Next up is the combo explanation! I hope this helps all the players who love Galaxy-Eyes! But let me state this upfront: I don't recommend this deck for competitive players. For soul players, it's all about having fun. Galaxy-Eyes is primarily a go-second, OTK-focused deck that is heavily reliant on its Normal Summon. It also runs a lot of high-level monsters in the main deck, making it prone to bricking! Furthermore, its first-turn board isn't particularly strong and can't set up multiple negates like Stardust Dragon or Utopia. Because of this, the deck often includes many generic hand traps and staple Spell/Trap cards. With that disclaimer out of the way, let's look at a one-card combo!"

After hearing the vlogger's words, Kite's heart sank. The Galaxy-Eyes deck... doesn't have much competitive viability in the Higher World? No! This was his ace, his Galaxy-Eyes! Even if it wasn't the best, it couldn't be that bad, could it? Did that damn company—what was it called, K-Snake?—not give Galaxy-Eyes any decent support?

After a moment of internal ranting, Kite calmed down and focused on the one-card combo explanation.

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "This one-card combo revolves around the Continuous Spell, Galaxy Hundred! Let's say you draw this card late in the game. We activate Galaxy Hundred! Its effect sends Photon Jumper from the deck to the Graveyard. Jumper's effect activates, adding Galaxy Trance from the deck to the hand. Activate Trance, pay 2000 LP to revive Jumper from the Graveyard, and also Special Summon Galaxy Summoner from the deck. Here, we'll use these two monsters to Link Summon Galaxy-Eyes Solflare Dragon! Then, activate Solflare Dragon's effect to retrieve Galaxy Summoner from the Graveyard. Normal Summon Summoner, activate its effect to revive Jumper. Overlay the two Level 4 monsters to Xyz Summon Galaxy Photon Dragon. Use its effect to search the Trap Card Eternal Galaxy and set it. On the opponent's turn, you can Rank-Up into Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord, which gives you a monster effect negate and a search. The strategy is that simple!"

"..."

Indeed, the strategy was simple. But the new line of thinking it provided sent a jolt through Kite Tenjo in the ZEXAL world.

Link Summon Solflare Dragon? Why would I summon that monster? Shouldn't I just go straight into a Rank 4?

When he first saw the LINK-2 Solflare Dragon, Kite had been dismissive of its 2000 ATK. Its search effect seemed barely decent, and its destruction effect was too costly if you didn't have Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, requiring two discards. He had never planned on summoning it.

But seeing this now, Kite suddenly understood. Perhaps the most important part of Solflare Dragon wasn't its destruction effect on the opponent's turn. If you had GEPD, it was amazing, but if you didn't, its search effect, when used properly, was a key combo extender. He had been too focused on raw power and had overlooked this.

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Next is the two-card combo, which is the standard, formulaic opening for Galaxy-Eyes. For example, Galaxy Soldier plus Photon Emperor. Soldier discards Emperor to Special Summon itself; Emperor's effect revives it. Soldier's effect adds Galaxy Wizard to hand. Emperor's effect provides an additional Normal Summon. Then, Normal Summon Wizard, use its effect to Tribute itself and search for Galaxy Summoner, and Normal Summon it. Summoner's effect revives Wizard. Now, don't forget a crucial point: Wizard's search effect is not once per turn! So, we Tribute Wizard again to add Galaxy Trance from the deck. Then, Link Summon Galaxy-Eyes Solflare Dragon using Emperor and Soldier. Solflare's effect retrieves Wizard from the Graveyard for next turn. Activate Galaxy Trance, pay 2000 LP to revive Emperor, and Special Summon Galaxy-Eyes Afterglow Dragon from the deck. Now, don't make a Rank 8 here! Instead, use Summoner's effect to change Afterglow Dragon's Level to 4. Overlay Summoner and Afterglow into the Rank 4 Galaxy Photon Dragon! Use its effect to search and set Eternal Galaxy. The detached Afterglow Dragon's effect will then summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon from the deck. Now you make a Rank 8 into Number 90: Photon Lord. From here, you toggle your activation to 'ON.' On your opponent's turn, you can use the trap to Rank-Up your Rank 4 Galaxy Photon Dragon into the Rank 8 Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy. This is the simple, standard Galaxy-Eyes setup. Your board will have one Spell negate and one monster effect negate."

"..."

With the explanation of this two-card combo complete, everyone had a brand-new understanding of the Galaxy-Eyes first-turn board. And this side-by-side comparison left Kite Tenjo frozen in place.

That's right! During his duel, he hadn't immediately used his trap to Rank-Up into Hope Harbinger. Instead, he had tried to hold onto the trap to dodge destruction effects or something similar. But because of that hesitation, his first-turn board was left with only a single Photon Lord!

This comparison made Kite realize just how vast the gap was between his own dueling mindset and that of the Higher World duelists. Why was he so greedy, holding onto a slow trap card? He should have ranked up early and used the negate on a key combo piece!

At the same time, duelists from the other worlds like ZEXAL and 5D's expressed their thoughts.

Yugi Muto: "Indeed! Brother Kite overlooked the ability to Rank-Up into Number 38 on the opponent's turn to get that Spell negate online!"

Jesse Anderson: "Hey, it's normal. It was Brother Kite's first time playing the advanced Galaxy-Eyes deck, so it's understandable he didn't know the optimal first-turn board."

Crow Hogan: "But honestly, this Galaxy-Eyes deck is already pretty strong. As long as you don't brick, it seems like most two-card hands can start a combo, right?"

Professor Crowler: "A pity, a pity! Don't worry, Brother Kite, it's not too late to learn it now!"

Hearing these voices made Kite want to cry. Why hadn't he thought of immediately Xyz Ranking-Up back then? With Hope Harbinger on the field, Yuma would have had to ask for his permission before even thinking about starting a combo!

But that wasn't even the most important part. The synergy with one key card was about to make every duelist in the ZEXAL world's expression change drastically.

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "Most two-card combos and first-turn boards for Galaxy-Eyes are variations of this. So, nothing too unique. But there is one card that can completely change the game. And that card is the one-card starter, Galaxy Hundred! I personally believe this card is a mandatory three-of in any build. Why do I say that? Let's take a look at Galaxy Hundred's second effect. You can only use it once per turn. If you Special Summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, you can activate this effect: Look at your opponent's Extra Deck. Then, you can apply one of the following effects. First option: Banish one monster from it. Second option: Special Summon one 'Number' monster from it to your side of the field."

Veteran Galaxy-Eyes Player: "In our previous combo, we summoned Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon with Afterglow Dragon's effect, right? So, what can we do with this effect? Forget banishing, we get a monster steal effect! Your opponent has Number 38: Hope Harbinger? We'll just take it! They have Number 41: Bagooska? We'll take that too! What's that? You have a Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder? Send it straight to another dimension!

"..."

What the hell?! That one-card starter does THAT? It can not only banish but also steal monsters?

In that instant, the duelists from every world who had been thinking Galaxy-Eyes was mediocre all shut their mouths. They stared, dumbfounded, as the vlogger explained the various creative uses and combos with Galaxy Hundred.

The duelists in the ZEXAL world immediately thought of the Number cards from 1 to 99. Astral's whole body twitched. This card... it could summon any Number card, as long as the conditions were met? Number 99! Number 58! Number 41! Number 38! As long as the effect could be activated, you could just pull them onto your field?

Wait! There were more than 99 Number cards!

At this thought, both Astral and Yuma couldn't hold back anymore. This card... was beyond broken!

"Hahaha! What does it mean to be a Galaxy-Eyes duelist?"

"This is what it means to be a Galaxy-Eyes duelist!"

"It perfectly fits my title as the Number Hunter!"

"My turn, I steal one! Then I'll find a way to summon another Photon Dragon on my opponent's turn!"

"And I'll steal another one!"

"Can't steal one? Fine, I'll just banish it!"

"..."

Kite's eyes lit up, and he burst into laughter. His words made the nearby duelists who owned Number Xyz monsters twitch. One by one, they considered taking their precious Number cards out of their Extra Decks.

Using the opponent's Extra Deck resources to duel against them! You bring your best cards just to have them become a dowry for Galaxy-Eyes! Who could stand that?

Kite was now ecstatic, but also filled with regret. If only he had drawn that card during his duel! He would have shown Yuma Tsukumo the true meaning of getting cucked!
