Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Serpent Broken, Demon Unleashed

The semifinal pairings were announced and the exchange ground settled into a tense anticipatory quiet.

Yan Di versus Xuanyuan Zhen first.

Lin Feng versus Xuanyuan Rou'er to follow.

Every set of eyes in that exchange ground carried the same underlying calculation — four dominant contestants, two pairings, and the knowledge that whoever emerged from these semifinals would meet in a final that nobody present would forget. The patriarchs of all three clans sat with expressions carefully composed over an anxiety they couldn't fully suppress. Even confidence, when it was genuine, had its limits in the face of genuine uncertainty.

Yan Di walked to the center of the exchange ground with the unhurried stride of someone who had been waiting for this specific moment since the group stages concluded. He was broad across the shoulders, his presence carrying a physical heat that the nearest spectators felt against their skin even at distance. His fiery Qi ran close to the surface — it always did when he was serious. The air around him shimmered faintly.

He looked at Xuanyuan Zhen across the ground and said what he'd been thinking since watching the earlier display of physical dominance.

"Some say your physical strength is stronger than mine." A pause. "I call bullshit on that."

It wasn't arrogance exactly. It was the statement of someone who had built their identity around physical superiority and found that identity challenged for the first time. Xuanyuan Zhen's dominant display in his group fight had done something to Yan Di that losing to a sword cultivator never would have — it had reached the specific pride he kept in the one area he considered unassailable.

He didn't wait for a response.

Dark crimson scales erupted across his skin in a wave — starting at his forearms and spreading outward until they covered everything visible. The Fiery Serpent Technique activated with the ease of something practiced ten thousand times, fire Qi flooding his meridians and bleeding into the air around him in waves of heat that made the exchange ground shimmer. His aura expanded outward like a physical force.

Then he moved.

The speed behind it was genuine — a first stage Foundation Establishment cultivator shouldn't move like that, the fiery serpent technique compressing fire Qi into his legs and releasing it in explosive bursts that closed distance faster than the eye comfortably tracked. The strike that followed carried the combined weight of his cultivation, his physique, and years of training directed at a single point.

An ordinary cultivator at the third or even fourth stage of Foundation Establishment would have been cautious meeting that head on.

Xuanyuan Zhen moved to meet it.

Purple golden Qi rose across his body in the same moment — golden light from his Ancient Deity Body, purple luminescence from his Heavenly Monarch Body, the two weaving together into that distinctive combined radiance that had already stopped the exchange ground cold once today. It coated him completely and he accelerated forward without breaking stride.

They collided in the center of the ground.

The sound reached the back rows of the crowd before the visual did — a concussive impact that shook the stone beneath everyone's feet and sent a visible ripple through the air outward from the point of contact. Several people in the front rows stumbled. A child somewhere in the crowd started crying from the sheer noise of it.

Then the exchange ground erupted.

Not in sound — in movement. The two of them tore through each other's attacks with the focused savagery of people for whom subtlety was a secondary consideration. Strike answered strike. Each exchange landed with enough force to have ended a normal fight immediately and produced nothing but the next exchange. The crowd watched with the stunned recognition of people seeing something that exceeded the category they'd prepared for.

These weren't cultivators fighting.

These were two forces of nature that happened to have human shapes.

Several moves passed in rapid succession. Then something changed.

The crimson scales across Yan Di's body — solid, reinforced by fire Qi, a natural armor that had absorbed punishment from opponents twice his cultivation level — began to crack.

First one. Then three. Then a spreading network of fractures working outward from the points where Xuanyuan Zhen's attacks had landed, each crack accompanied by a thin line of blood that welled up and fell to the exchange ground in drops of dark red.

Yan Di felt it before he saw it. The impacts that should have been absorbed were getting through. The physical gap he'd refused to acknowledge was making itself undeniable through the medium of his own cracking scales.

He stopped.

Looked at the blood on the ground.

Looked at Xuanyuan Zhen.

Who didn't look spent. Not remotely. His purple golden Qi hadn't diminished in intensity. His breathing hadn't changed. He stood in the aftermath of an exchange that had cracked Yan Di's physique armor and looked like someone who had been warming up.

Lin Feng, waiting at the edge of the ground for his own semifinal, watched this with an expression that had shifted several degrees toward something harder and more calculating. His sword intent had been blocked with ease by that same person. The scales of the Fiery Serpent Technique cracking under those fists confirmed what he'd already begun to suspect.

This was not a soft persimmon.

In the Yan clan's section of the crowd Yan Wuji's expression had moved well past anxiety into something approaching genuine alarm. He knew the Fiery Serpent Technique's defensive capability better than anyone present. Watching those scales crack was watching something he'd considered a reliable ceiling get revised upward against his will.

The Xuanyuan patriarch's expression was harder to read. He'd been watching Xuanyuan Zhen carefully since the group stages. What he felt watching those scales crack wasn't clan pride.

It was the specific unease of someone watching a problem grow larger than their solution for it.

"I believe that's not all you have to offer. Is it?"

Xuanyuan Zhen's voice was calm. Not mocking — genuinely asking. The tone of someone who wanted to see the rest before drawing conclusions.

Yan Di's response came immediately.

"Shut up."

The humiliation in it was real. He'd built five years of cultivation around physical superiority. He'd walked onto this exchange ground with the absolute certainty that whatever Xuanyuan Zhen had shown in his group fight was the ceiling. He was discovering in front of every clan member, every watching elder, every sect representative, that he'd been wrong about the ceiling.

He attacked again.

But this time his right arm transformed as he moved — fire Qi flooding into it with concentrated intensity, the scales thickening and darkening as the temperature around his hand spiked visibly. His aura climbed. The crowd felt the heat from two rows back.

'Fiery Serpent Claw.'

A phantom manifestation of a serpentine claw erupted from his strike — massive, claws spread, condensed fire Qi given temporary form and direction. It crossed the distance between them trailing heat and crimson light.

Xuanyuan Zhen looked at it.

'I should have practiced a combat technique,' he thought, with the practical detachment of someone making a mental note for later.

His aura responded anyway. Purple golden Qi flooded his right arm in a concentrated surge — not a technique, not a formal combat art, just his Qi given direction and intent and the full weight of his physiques behind it. The arm drew back.

He punched the claw.

The collision produced an explosion that the crowd felt in their chests. Stone cracked in a radius around the point of impact. Several people lost their footing entirely.

When the force dissipated Xuanyuan Zhen stood exactly where he'd been standing. Not a step back. Not a shifted foot. The purple golden Qi around his arm flickered and resettled like a flame adjusting to wind.

Yan Di's right arm felt like he'd struck a mountain made of metal.

He pulled it back slowly. Opened and closed his hand. Felt the deep ache of impact absorbed through scales that had done their best and found their best insufficient.

The gap was wide. Wider than he'd wanted to believe. Wider than his pride had room for.

His blood boiled.

He reached for the thing he'd been holding back.

In the Yan clan section Yan Wuji rose from his seat without deciding to. His face had gone from alarm to something uglier. The other patriarchs read the motion and understood what it meant — Yan Di was pulling his final card, the one that changed the parameters of the fight entirely.

The other clan elders leaned forward.

The sect elders didn't move but their attention sharpened perceptibly.

Two horns pushed through the skin of Yan Di's forehead — dark, curved, carrying a heat that made the air around his head shimmer and distort. From his back two bat-like wings unfurled with a sound like igniting paper, their surfaces sheened with the dark crimson of banked coals about to catch. The scales across his body darkened and thickened. His aura stopped climbing by degrees and simply — surged. The temperature on the exchange ground spiked hard enough that the nearest spectators stepped back involuntarily.

The Flame Demon Body.

Not the partial expression that had been bleeding through his scales since the fight began. The genuine article. The physique that made Yan Di what he was, fully declared, fully present, and radiating enough heat to make the stone beneath his feet begin to smoke.

The crowd went absolutely silent.

Xuanyuan Zhen looked at the horns. The wings. The darkened scales. The aura that had finally reached something that warranted genuine attention.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't a performance. It wasn't provocation. It was the specific smile of someone who had been waiting to find out what the ceiling actually was and had finally been shown something worth measuring against.

"So that's your full strength," he said.

A beat.

"Perfect."
