Chapter 454 - Chapter 454: The Cosmic Cube

Inside the Hydra Helicarrier's primary surveillance hub, an entire wall of monitors displayed live feeds from across Washington, D.C. Dozens of camera angles tracked Ben Parker and his team as they moved through the city streets.

Steve Rogers approached the monitoring station with measured steps, his boots silent on the polished floor. "Any unusual behavior from our visitors?"

The surveillance operator, a young man with the precise posture of someone who'd learned early that mistakes meant death, kept his eyes locked on the screens. "Nothing to report, Supreme Leader. They spent approximately forty minutes walking through the evacuation zones, observing our procedures. Currently, they've stopped at a slushie shop on Fifth and Madison."

Of course, the shop itself was empty. Steve had orchestrated this entire performance with meticulous care. Yes, he was relocating residents, gathering them in designated zones with military efficiency. But he had no intention of actually evacuating them from Earth.

Hydra forces had been seeded throughout the civilian population, disguised as ordinary citizens. When the time came to strike, they would be perfectly positioned.

"Good." Steve's voice was satisfied.

"Rick Jones stole classified intelligence from our databases. We don't know which resistance cell he passed the information to, but one thing is certain: we cannot allow these interdimensional visitors to make contact with any rebel elements."

At that moment, the Hive and Dr. Faustus approached from behind, their footsteps deliberate and loud enough to announce their presence. The Hive's host body moved with the unsettling fluidity of something puppeteered by parasitic intelligence.

"Steve." Faustus's voice carried the particular edge of someone accustomed to being obeyed. "We've expressed our concerns before. It would have been far simpler to execute those captured superheroes. But you chose mercy. Now they hide in the ruins of Las Vegas, constantly undermining our operations. That decision was a mistake."

The Hive's multiple voices layered over each other in unnatural harmony. "And that Rick Jones... if he refuses to submit to Hydra's order, he should be eliminated immediately. Made into an example. His continued existence breeds hope in the wrong people."

"Now isn't the time," Steve continued, forcing patience into his tone. "If these outsiders discover anything that contradicts our story, it will compromise the entire operation."

Dr. Faustus stepped closer, his aged face twisted with contempt. "Is it truly about the outsiders? Or is this about your own cowardice?"

Faustus seemed to sense he'd pushed as far as he could. Within the Hydra Cabinet's power structure, Baron Zemo and Madame Hydra stood firmly behind Steve. Open rebellion wasn't yet viable.

He stared coldly at the monitors, his final words delivered like a threat. "Keep watching them. Report any deviation immediately."

"I knew it couldn't be that simple."

Back in the cramped apartment, T'Challa shook his head as Miles finished explaining Hydra's likely deception. "This makes far more sense. We've personally destroyed multiple Earths during these collision crises. Not a single one cooperated willingly."

He began pacing, his tactical mind already running through scenarios. "A world ruled by Hydra being the most agreeable? The most willing to abandon their planet? That should have been our first warning sign. They were playing us from the start."

Looma, who'd been sitting quietly on the protesting sofa, suddenly perked up. Her four hands flexed, meteor hammer spinning with barely contained excitement. "Does this mean there's going to be a fight?"

"Normally, at this point, we'd just activate the antimatter annihilation weapon and be done with it." T'Challa's voice carried grim practicality. "We don't have time to wage a prolonged war against Hydra. And since this Earth is getting destroyed anyway..."

He let the implication hang.

"No!" Miles launched himself at the ceiling in pure panic, adhering to the surface above their heads. "You can't do that! That's mass murder! Billions of innocent people live on this planet!"

"And if we don't destroy this Earth, both universes collapse." T'Challa's response was cold logic. "Even more people die. The math is brutal, but it's simple."

Vivi's synthetic features arranged themselves into an expression of desperate hope. "Or you could help us. If we work together to eliminate Hydra's leadership, we can proceed with your evacuation plan. The people would cooperate with legitimate authorities."

"There isn't enough time." Ben finally spoke, his voice cutting through the rising tension. He studied the two young resistance fighters with something that might have been sympathy. "Even if we agreed to help you overthrow Hydra in the next seven hours, there wouldn't be enough time remaining to evacuate billions of people afterward. The logistics alone are impossible."

Miles and Vivi fell silent, the crushing weight of reality settling over them.

Ben offered an alternative, his tone gentler. "What about your people? The survivors you've been protecting. There should still be some in your underground shelters, right? We could evacuate them. It's not everyone, but at least some would survive."

"What?" Miles dropped from the ceiling, landing in a crouch. "Abandon everyone else? The people in Las Vegas, sure, they know what's happening. But everyone else? The civilians in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago? They're innocent. They don't even know they're living under Hydra's lies. We can't just leave them to die!"

"There may not be enough time to save them," Ben repeated.

At that moment, the wall exploded inward.

A massive green figure crashed through brick and drywall, debris exploding in all directions. The Hulk's smaller cousin, Amadeus Cho in his transformed state, carried a teenager in a yellow shirt tucked under one massive arm. Ms. Marvel followed, her enlarged fists still smoking from punching through the Hydra patrol that had found them.

Behind them, the distinctive whir of Hydra combat robots echoed through the new hole in the wall.

"Everyone move!" Amadeus bellowed, his voice distorted by transformation. "We've got thirty seconds before they bring heavy weapons!"

The apartment erupted into coordinated chaos. Miles yanked his mask back on, webbing already firing to grab essential equipment. Vivi phased through the floor to check for basement exits.

"Wait!" Miles suddenly spun, his spider-sense screaming. "Where did they go?"

Ben and his team had vanished completely. But that peculiar sixth sense that connected Spider-totems told Miles they were still close. Still watching. Still there, just unseen.

"This way!" A voice shouted from the street below.

A young Black woman with her hair pulled back in a practical ponytail leaned out of a battered blue sedan, waving frantically. "Come on! We don't have all day!"

"Oh wow, is that really..." Amadeus Cho, now returned to human form, practically vibrated with excitement as he dove through the window. "That's the Fantastic Four's flying car! The original Fantasticar Mark VII! With this baby, even Hydra's fastest pursuit units won't catch us!"

The informant they'd rescued, a middle-aged man with haunted eyes, scrambled into the back seat as the others piled in.

"Everyone in?" The driver, Riri Williams, called back. Her fingers flew across the unfamiliar control panel. "Okay, activating flight systems now!"

She pressed the ignition.

Black smoke belched from the exhaust pipe. The engine roared twice, sputtered pitifully, and died with a resigned wheeze.

Silence.

"Um," Riri said in a small voice. "That's... that wasn't supposed to happen."

"Ironheart!" Amadeus twisted in his seat, watching Hydra robots round the corner behind them. "What's going on?"

"I don't know! It worked fine ten minutes ago!" She frantically slapped controls, her self-proclaimed genius status suddenly feeling very inadequate. "Maybe it's overloaded? Too much weight?"

The Hydra robots raised their weapons, targeting lasers painting red dots across the car's exterior.

Ben Parker materialized in the driver's seat.

Riri screamed, nearly punching him on reflex.

"Let me handle this," Ben said calmly, gently moving her aside. "Upgrade."

The word wasn't a command. It was a transformation.

Black and green liquid metal erupted from Ben's body, flowing across the Fantasticar's surface like living oil. The substance spread with predatory intelligence, seeping into every gap and circuit, rewriting the vehicle's fundamental structure.

The interior expanded impossibly, dimensional engineering creating space that shouldn't exist. What had been a cramped sedan became a spacious transport, easily accommodating everyone with room to spare.

The gentle exhaust ports transformed into massive thrust engines, angled downward at forty-five degrees. Fire bloomed from their depths.

"Hold on to something," Ben's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere, the Upgrade symbiosis complete.

The modified Fantasticar launched forward like a railgun projectile.

The closest Hydra robots, caught in the exhaust wash, were instantly vaporized. The superheated plasma stream didn't just destroy them. It erased them, leaving nothing but scorched pavement where they'd been standing.

"Holy..." Miles couldn't finish the sentence, pressed back into his seat by acceleration that should have liquefied his internal organs.

The landscape became a blur. Washington, D.C. vanished behind them in seconds.

Only when they'd cleared the city's outer defense perimeter did Looma and the others deactivate their Ghost Plugins, shimmering into visibility within the expanded passenger compartment.

Riri, seeing Steve Rogers suddenly sitting next to her, nearly drove off the road. "What the actual hell? Did you guys destroy Hydra's headquarters while you were at it?"

"We don't have that capability," Amadeus admitted, though his analytical mind was clearly trying to calculate exactly what capabilities they did have. "It's complicated. We should get back to base first." He leaned forward, addressing the dashboard where Ben's consciousness resided. "Our facility is in Las Vegas. Do you need directions?"

"Unnecessary." A portion of Upgrade's liquid metal extruded from the dashboard, forming a vaguely head-shaped mass with glowing green eyes. Those eyes flickered once, accessing satellite data. "We'll arrive in three minutes."

Three minutes later, they descended into the underground resistance base beneath the ruins of Las Vegas.

The security response was immediate and overwhelming. Black Widow and Hawkeye emerged from defensive positions, weapons raised, a dozen other resistance fighters fanning out behind them. Every gun in the room pointed at a single target.

Steve Rogers.

"Wait!" Miles threw himself between the guns and their target. "Nat, this isn't our Steve!"

"Obviously." Black Widow's gun never wavered, though her finger moved off the trigger. "If it were, I'd have already put three rounds through his skull."

She and Hawkeye lowered their weapons simultaneously, muscle memory and trust operating in perfect sync. Hawkeye glanced at the Fantasticar, which was already reverting to its original form as Upgrade separated from it. The vehicle looked like it had been through a war zone.

"Are these the people Otto told you to find?" he asked Miles.

"Just me, actually." Ben reverted to human form, the black and green liquid metal flowing back into his body until no trace remained. He walked forward, studying two faces that were familiar yet somehow foreign. "I didn't plan on getting involved in your world's civil war. But Hydra just can't help being Hydra."

A slight smile crossed his features. "And Steve Rogers up there thinks he's so clever. I really love telling people like that 'no.'"

"Thank you for the assistance." Natasha's voice carried a peculiar flatness, as though hope had been beaten out of her so many times that genuine gratitude felt dangerous.

Amadeus approached, practically dragging the informant they'd rescued. "Before we get into anything else, we should review the intelligence Rick Jones obtained." He held up his palm, revealing a small USB drive. "This is what got him killed."

Hawkeye moved to take it, intending to bring it to Tony Stark for analysis.

Ben's hand shot out, plucking the drive from Amadeus's grip with casual speed. Before anyone could react, he'd plugged it into a port on his left wrist. Nanites flowed from his suit, forming a reader interface.

Hawkeye gave him an incredulous look. "You know, most people understand the concept of 'need to know.'"

He didn't trust these outsiders. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

Ben ignored the implied criticism, his attention focused on the data scrolling across his internal display. "Let's see what was worth dying for."

Rick Jones's face appeared on a holographic projection. Ben didn't recognize him, but the sharp intakes of breath from Natasha and Hawkeye told him this was someone significant.

The room fell silent as Rick's recorded message began. It detailed his infiltration of Hydra's inner circle, the months of careful positioning, the risks he'd taken. And finally, the classified document he'd discovered: the full record of how Hydra had used a device called the Cosmic Cube to rewrite reality itself, transforming Steve Rogers from America's greatest hero into their supreme leader.

"Now we finally understand." Hawkeye's fist clenched so hard his knuckles went white. "Steve works for Hydra because they made him work for Hydra. They changed who he fundamentally is."

Behind Ben, the Highbreed wearing Steve's face also clenched his fists. His borrowed body trembled, an involuntary reaction to recognition. "That device..." His voice cracked slightly. "That's the Tesseract!"
