The Gremory garden was hushed that evening. The moonlight cast itself out upon the marble path, settling on the red roses swaying gently in the wind. This was a silence that was full of life—with the whispers of magic and the smell of earth on a long day.
Rias walked along with Kaelthar, their hands touching lightly, without speaking much. The tension from dinner was gone, and all they could hear was their footsteps and the gentle crunching of petals.
Akeno and Koneko followed a few steps back. It didn't take long for Akeno to stop, a teasing smirk playing on her lips.
"Well, well," she said, crossing her arms. "It looks like you two have forgotten that we're even here."
Rias turned with a small blush on her face.
"Akeno"
Akeno giggled, pushing a strand of her black hair behind her ear. "Don't worry, Rias. I understand when to leave them be." Akeno's eyes drifted over to Kaelthar, half-lidded and full of mirth. "However, next time, Kaelthar. it's my turn."
Koneko blinked and continued flatly, "Then me after."
Kaelthar laughed briefly. It was a smooth and unconcerned sound. "All right," he said. "I will remember"
Rias gave him a look. "You're not supposed to agree so easily."
He only smiled. "Would you rather I argue?"
Akeno chuckled and turned away, pleased. "Enjoy your night, you two," she said. Akeno and Koneko headed back towards the mansion as their dark silhouettes were lost in the warm lights of the mansion.
Finally, when they were by themselves, Rias let out a soft sigh. "They don't hold back, do they?"
"They do care about you," said Kaelthar. "That's not necessarily bad."
She gave him a sidelong glance, curling her lips. "You're not nervous about all of this. Most males would be panicking now if Akeno made a statement such as that."
"I've experienced tougher challenges than bullying," was his answer.
This brought a laugh from her—it was a small, genuine one. The sort that rounded off the hard edges of the night. "You always know what to say," she whispered.
Kaelthar ceased walking. The garden lay out before them, a curve of shining flowers and a fountain that reflected the light of the moon. His eyes were drawn to her as he turned to face her, catching the glint of gold in the darkness.
"I don't say the right things, Rias," he whispered. "I just say what I mean."
Rias gazed up at him, her heart pounding faster. He had no doubt in his voice. "And what do you mean now?"
"That I'm exactly where I want to be."
For an instant, she didn't say anything. The night momentarily held its breath as the wind swept between them. Then she drew closer until there was no space separating them.
"You really do have a way with words," she said, her voice coming out softer.
Hayden laughed, his eyes sparkling
"Then stop me."
Instead, she elevated herself on her toes and kissed him.
It was not a desperate or hungry kiss—simply a quiet and deep and full-of-everything-they-hadn't-said-over-dinner kind. His hand had found its place on her waist, and hers lay on his chest, and then the world just seemed to stop.
Finally, they managed to separate. "You're dangerous," Rias said, her face warm, her eyes a little glassy from her emotions. She was half-smiling.
His voice was deep. "Only to those who would take you away from me."
Her heart skipped a beat once again. Leaning her head against his shoulder, she looked up at the stars. "You know… I used to come out here when I was younger. I'd look up at the sky and hope someone would notice me—not as the Gremory heir, not as a noble, but just me."
He looked down at her. "And?"
"I think I finally found that someone."
He pushed a bright red strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentle. "Then I'm glad I ended up in this world," he said.
She smiled faintly. "You make it sound as if you weren't meant to."
"Maybe I wasn't," he said. "But fate doesn't always decide everything."
The fountain sparkled in the light of the moon, reflecting off their faces. Rias closed her eyes, enjoying his warmth beside her.
"Kaelthar," she whispered, "promise me something."
He turned his head a little. "What is it?"
"No matter what happens – my family, the underworld, anything – promise you'll stay with me."
He did not think twice. "Even if the world itself is torn apart, I will remain here."
She smiled at that, and a single tear slid from her eye before she quickly wiped it away. "You're impossible."
"And you love me for it," he said, laughing softly.
".Yeah," she said quietly. "I do."
The roses that surrounded them began to sway as if they were being moved by their words, their petals shimmering in the soft breeze.
In the balcony above, Akeno leaned on the balcony railing, observing the scene below. She kept a look on her face, a faint smile rising on her lips. "How cute," she said. "But he's concealing more than he's letting on."
Koneko gazed up at the stars sidled up to her. "That's why he's different," she said.
Their words were swept away by the wind, leaving only the soothing melody of the fountain and the two figures standing below, pressed against each other in the grip of something much more profound than words.
