The silence hung between them, with the force of unsaid words building like a storm on the verge of bursting.
Grayfia Lucifuge had straightened, her silver hair spilling behind her in a shimmering wave, with her aura decorously controlled. But inside, her chest did not beat with calm—it quickened.
Even as she stepped through the seal bearing the crest of Gremory, she knew she would face opposition. The protection around this mansion had been impenetrable to her all afternoon, refusing her entrance even when she had complete control over demonic magic. This, in itself, had troubled her. But now, as she stood within the entrance, facing the figure at the center of the room, she realized why.
Her instincts screamed danger.
Kaelthar sat with complete nonchalance, his golden eyes sparkling with the radiance of a monarch who did not need a throne to assert his rulership. The presence of the demon didn't crush her—it was worse. It couldn't even be quantified. She felt nothing, no presence, no presence of demons, no decay of power emanating from him whatsoever. The presence of the man sitting before her seemed to defy the laws she understood.
And yet. he is here. Living, breathing, a flesh-and-blood human being,
Her polished demeanor slipped, if only in her mind. She had stood against kings, devils, angels, and even gods. She had stood side by side with Sirzechs Lucifer himself, with her husband, who was one of the Four Maou, the Crimson Satan who brought both the heavens and the underworld to its knees in power.
"But compared to the man before her, who had been a mixture
Grayfia's lips formed a tight line. She couldn't feel him. And that lack of sensation told her a lot more than an overwhelming presence might have.
He is stronger. Maybe. even stronger than Sirzechs himself.
There was his appearance, for instance. The descriptions she had been told by Rias came flooding back: 'Handsome', 'dignified', 'mysterious'. This is what Grayfia had ImportErrordismissed as the overwrought adoration of a young girl swept away with youthful lust.
Now, however, she realized that Rias had been underselling the situation.
The face of Kaelthar, sharp and serene, exuded a certain attractive quality that bordered on the unfair, as if it had been sculpted by the very idea of perfection itself. The hair that framed his face was like the night sky encompassing a golden sun. The slightest curve of his lips, the swagger in his step—this was a man whose attractiveness might even rival, possibly even exceed, that of certain goddesses known only for their beauty.
It wasn't merely beautiful. It was more than that. It had a presence. It had a gravity that pulled the eye, that pulled your attention, that wouldn't let go.
Grayfia squeezed her fist against the folds of her uniform. She is a wife. She is a queen. The Silver-Haired Queen of Destruction. No, she is not a maiden who can be led astray by a charming face.
And yet—her thoughts betrayed her, whispering truths she couldn't deny.
So this is the man who has won Rias's heart. Not surprising, really. not surprising that she talks about him with such passion.
Kaelthar's gaze never faltered. He regarded her with silence, a slight smile playing on his lips as if he saw right through her mind.
At last, the silence was broken by Grayfia. Her head tilted slightly, her voice calm but with a tone of respect.
"I came here on the order of the Gremory family. My mission is to see that you and the ladies are escorted to the Gremory estate in the Underworld. The Lord and Lady are waiting for your presence."
Kaelthar tilted his head, his golden eyes gleaming with a faint amusement. "And yet, you struggled to enter," he said.
She clenched her jaw, but she nodded. "Your shield. it is unlike what I have ever experienced before. Even my own power would not be able to overcome it. The only way inside would be if you chose to let me in."
Akeno smiled faintly at Kaelthar's side, her lids languid as she listened to the famed maid of the house of Gremory speak with such self-control. Koneko, on the other hand, merely gazed, her acute senses verifying what she already knew to be true—that despite her might and experience, Grayfia was nervous before Kaelthar.
Kaelthar sat leaning on his elbows, his head supported on his hand, his smile growing, not unpleasant, but tinged with a certain authority.
"And now that you are standing before me," he said with a smoothness that made her flesh crawl, "tell me, honestly. What are your instincts, Grayfia Lucifuge?"
For a beat, the Silver Queen hesitated. But the truth was irrefutable. She stood a little straighter, her silver gaze meeting his fearless, although a touch of respect tinged her voice.
"…My instincts tell me that you are a man incomparable. Much stronger than anyone I have met. Perhaps even stronger than Sirzechs."
The words loomed in the air, the way a verdict might.
Kaelthar chuckled, a deep, rich sound, but he did not confirm nor deny.
Instead, he finally rose from his chair. The light from the lamp danced on his crimson and silver coat as he stepped out, his every movement calculated, his every step exuding the power of a man who need not prove his stature.
"Very well," he said. "If Rias's parents want to see me, then we shall go."
The demon lord shifted slightly, golden irises flashing towards Akeno and Koneko. "You two, prepare yourselves. The Underworld awaits us."
Akeno lowered her head with a smile, while Koneko stood still, waiting in silence.
However, Grayfia froze for a brief instant longer, her mind wandering back as she watched him.
More handsome than the Gods themselves, more frightening than devils.
She took a quiet breath, calmed her heart.
"'This man is dangerous. For Rias.for all of us.'"
But even as this thought occurred to her, another popped into her head, one she couldn't suppress.
But maybe, just maybe, he is exactly what she needs.
The wards on the mansion were glowing with a soft blue light as Kaelthar cast his will, which allowed Grayfia to prepare the teleportational circle that would take him to the Gremory estate.
The Silver Queen's hand swept through the air, conjuring a massive red wash that stretched across the floor of the hall. The light danced back in her silver eyes as she cast a final, fleeting look at Kaelthar.
And for the first time in centuries, a power stirred inside of Grayfia Lucifuge that wasn't fear, duty, or motives— —but curiosity. "Then let us depart," she said softly. The circle expanded, erupting with a blinding light that engulphed the hall.
