Chapter 68 - Chapter 68 — "The Chessmaster"

Chapter 68 —

Unknown POV

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

The antique clock echoed through the room.

Every second sounded deliberate.

Measured.

Perfect.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the sleeping city.

Rain slid lazily down the glass.

Inside—

Silence ruled.

A gloved hand slowly moved a black chess piece across an enormous marble chessboard.

Click.

The Queen advanced.

Across from it—

The King waited.

The player smiled.

"Beautiful."

Behind him, dozens of monitors illuminated the darkness.

Each displayed a different live feed.

Lyra leaving Eden-Crest Elite Hospital.

Kieller inside the ICU.

Aren entering Villa Nighthaven.

Luna boarding a private train.

Detective Rael Callen tied to a chair.

Nothing escaped these screens.

Nothing.

The voice that finally broke the silence was calm.

Elegant.

Almost gentle.

"Status."

A White Mask operative stepped forward.

"Subject Seven recovered another memory."

No response.

"The Golden Mask made direct contact."

Silence.

"Kieller Voss has regained consciousness."

The gloved fingers paused over the chessboard.

Then—

The black King moved one square.

"So."

A faint smile appeared beneath the shadow of the hood.

"The game becomes interesting."

The operative lowered his head.

"There is... another issue."

"Speak."

"Detective Rael discovered the transfer records."

The room became colder.

"Did he copy them?"

"No."

"He was interrupted."

The figure nodded once.

"As expected."

Nothing about his posture suggested surprise.

As though every possibility had already been calculated.

Because it had.

He had predicted all of this.

Months ago.

Years ago.

Perhaps even before Lyra remembered her own name.

The operative hesitated.

"Should we eliminate him?"

The figure chuckled softly.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

"A dead detective is useless."

Another chess piece moved.

The Knight.

"Fear teaches better than death."

A second White Mask entered.

"Sir."

"Report."

"The Black Mask has arrived."

The room fell silent.

Then the figure laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"So he finally decided to return."

Heavy footsteps echoed through the hall.

A man entered wearing an entirely black mask.

No markings.

No symbols.

Only darkness.

Unlike the White Masks, he didn't bow.

He simply stood.

The atmosphere shifted immediately.

Danger.

Recognition.

Mutual respect.

"You took your time," the mastermind said.

"I had another problem to solve."

"The girl?"

A brief nod.

"She fought well."

The mastermind smiled.

"She always does."

The Black Mask crossed his arms.

"You're becoming sentimental."

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"I'm becoming curious."

He looked toward the largest monitor.

Lyra stood outside the hospital, staring into the rain.

Alone.

Broken.

Still refusing to bend.

The mastermind watched her for a long time.

"Do you know why she fascinates me?"

The Black Mask remained silent.

"Every subject begged."

Another chess piece moved.

"They cried."

Another.

"They surrendered."

Another.

"They broke."

The black Queen stopped directly before the white King.

"But Subject Seven..."

His voice softened.

"...learned how to become the storm."

Silence lingered.

The Black Mask finally asked,

"So what now?"

The mastermind turned away from the chessboard.

"Phase Three."

"Specifically?"

His gloved hand opened a leather folder.

Inside—

Photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Lyra.

At six years old.

At twelve.

At eighteen.

At twenty-two.

Sleeping.

Working.

Laughing.

Crying.

Standing beside Kieller.

Standing beside Luna.

Standing beside Ally.

Every moment of her life had been documented.

The Black Mask frowned.

"You've been watching her for years."

"For her entire life."

A long pause.

Then—

The mastermind picked up one photograph.

A smiling little Lyra holding her sister's hand.

His thumb brushed gently across the edge.

"She thinks Project Echo created a weapon."

He smiled.

"They're wrong."

"They created a successor."

The room became utterly still.

The Black Mask looked up sharply.

"You're going to tell her?"

"Not yet."

He returned the photograph to the folder.

"First..."

He reached into a silver box.

Removing another pristine white envelope.

A single black feather.

A dried white rose.

And a handwritten note.

He smiled as he wrote the final sentence.

The past isn't behind you anymore.

It's waiting in your home.

He sealed the envelope with dark crimson wax.

"Deliver it."

The operative accepted it immediately.

"And the detective?"

The mastermind looked toward the monitor showing Rael.

Still unconscious.

Still tied to the chair.

"Wake him."

A pause.

"I want him to carry a message."

"What message?"

The mastermind's smile widened.

"Tell Lyra..."

The room fell silent.

"...that I've finally become tired of hiding."

The screens suddenly went black.

One after another.

Until only a single image remained.

A childhood photograph.

Two little girls.

One smiling brightly.

The other looking nervously toward the camera.

A gloved finger rested gently over the smaller girl's face.

Lyra.

Then—

The voice whispered into the darkness.

"Come home..."

And somewhere in the shadows—

Someone answered.

"Yes... Father."

The chapter ended.
