The atmosphere in Class A was settling.
The initial chaotic energy of arrival had begun to dissipate, replaced by the low hum of conversation as students claimed their territories. The tiered desks were filling up, forming distinct islands of influence.
Kael found himself—against his will—sitting in the center of one of the most prominent islands.
He had tried to drift to the edge, but Seraphina's group had effectively boxed him in. To his left was Theo. To his right was Rylen. Behind him sat Seraphina and Niko. It was a tactical formation designed to prevent escape, and Kael resented it immensely.
"So," Niko said, leaning forward over his desk.
He looked at Kael with a gaze that was far too intense for a Monday morning.
"I never got the chance to say it properly," Niko said, his voice low and serious. "Thank you."
Kael blinked, feigning ignorance. "For what?"
"For the exam," Niko pressed. "We both know without you none of us would be sitting here today."
Kael sighed.
