Chapter 337 - Chapter 337: Conversation

Under Li Chengzhi's guidance, Chen Mo followed him into a private hospital room.

Inside was a middle-aged man in a suit with a lean build and tanned skin. His eyes were sharp and focused. Next to him stood a capable-looking woman, likely in her late twenties, dressed in a professional outfit—clearly an assistant.

When Chen Mo and Li Chengzhi entered, both individuals stood up politely.

"This is Lin Zhengguo, team leader from the Security Bureau. And this is Wang Xiaofeng, his assistant," Li Chengzhi introduced. "Team Leader Lin is now heading the investigation into the attack. He'd like to speak with you about what happened."

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Chen."

"Hello, Team Leader Lin."

Chen Mo shook hands with both and then the four of them sat down.

"We're currently taking over the investigation into your attack," Lin Zhengguo began. "We've confirmed that Mr. Chen was abducted from the scene and later returned safely. The three attackers were found dead. There are gaps in the timeline that we'd like to understand more clearly."

"Go ahead," Chen Mo nodded.

"Who eliminated the attackers and helped you escape?"

When they arrived at the secondary location, all they found were the corpses and vehicles. Chen Mo had already left for the hospital, leaving them unclear on what had transpired.

"I did," Chen Mo replied flatly. "I killed two of them. The last one... likely died from blood loss in the vehicle."

He saw no reason to hide the truth. He wasn't afraid of legal consequences—he could hire the best lawyers in the country, and this was clearly a case of self-defense. As for the involvement of the robot, he had no intention of mentioning it unless asked directly.

Wang Xiaofeng, the assistant, paused in her typing and looked at Chen Mo in surprise, her disbelief obvious.

He was a researcher—he'd managed to kill two armed, well-trained professionals while being held hostage? It sounded impossible.

Lin Zhengguo was equally surprised. Even elite personnel would struggle to escape such a situation, let alone come out alive and win.

"Are you joking, Mr. Chen?"

"I wouldn't joke about something like this. They had already taken out all my bodyguards. Who else was going to save me? I had no choice but to save myself."

"Can you describe the process? I'm very curious how you managed to kill three trained agents and escape."

His tone was measured, but it was clear he didn't fully buy the story. From the aftermath at the scene, there had been an intense struggle. It was hard to believe that someone like Chen Mo—brilliant, yes, but still a civilian—could pull that off alone.

Li Chengzhi responded before Chen Mo could speak. "Team Leader Lin, you might not be aware, but Mr. Chen's physical abilities rival those of specially trained operatives. I'd even wager that he could defeat you in a one-on-one fight."

He looked at Lin seriously.

"You might think he's just a researcher, but that's only part of the story. He's undergone training and has used the potential-enhancing agent we're currently evaluating for the military's Super Soldier Program. I've seen the results myself. In terms of physical ability, he's far beyond the average human."

Hearing this, Lin Zhengguo was stunned. Wang Xiaofeng's eyes widened in disbelief, but neither dared to question it.

Li Chengzhi was the official liaison to Chen Mo and knew him best. If he said it, it wasn't a joke.

"So Mr. Chen is a hidden expert…" Lin Zhengguo chuckled, letting the topic drop.

There was no point pushing further. How Chen Mo killed the attackers wouldn't help much in uncovering their identities. And this wasn't a murder case—pressing too hard would only offend him.

After a brief pause to reorganize his thoughts, Lin continued, "Did the attackers say anything during the abduction? Did they mention where they were taking you?"

"They said they were sending me out by water. Didn't specify where, but from what I overheard, their boat wasn't far from where I escaped. About a ten-minute drive, assuming a speed of 110 km/h," Chen Mo said.

"By ferry…"

Lin Zhengguo turned to Wang Xiaofeng.

"Have Xiao Du investigate. Use the second site as a center point—search all nearby docks or ports within a ten-minute drive. Check for suspicious vessels in the area between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m."

"Understood."

Wang Xiaofeng immediately passed the instructions along through her laptop.

"Mr. Chen, in the past few months, have you been threatened by anyone? Any major business disputes? Any cooperation requests you rejected?"

Chen Mo had already shared similar information before.

In his line of work, competitors were everywhere—and many of them disliked him intensely. Rejected cooperation offers were common. Being threatened wasn't unusual either, though no one had ever dared to do it face-to-face.

After several more questions yielded no solid leads, Lin Zhengguo ended the session and took his leave.

Once they were alone, Li Chengzhi led Chen Mo to the large balcony of the hospital. The area had been cleared, with only Li's security team nearby to ensure privacy.

"There's more that wasn't said inside," Li Chengzhi began. "Seven people were involved in the attack."

"One of them was Gu Qinghai's man—the one who held off the Black Hawk team. An orphan, taken in by Gu Qinghai, returned to Switzerland two years ago. During that time, he attended various international military training camps. We haven't been able to track who he interacted with."

"The other five were foreigners. Three had no entry records into China—their identities are completely unknown. The remaining two were from Austria and Norway. Even with official records, we couldn't confirm their real identities. Likely fake."

"All of them are dead. No identifying documents were found. I'm afraid we won't get answers from them."

Chen Mo nodded, unsurprised.

"There are two more things I came to tell you," Li continued.

"What are they?"

"First—an invitation to a special project."

"I don't have time right now. Nor the mood." Chen Mo's voice was firm.

"I figured as much," Li replied with a sigh. "But I wanted to mention it. There's an artificial intelligence conference next month in the capital. You'll likely be invited. When you go, we'll talk more."

"And the other?"

Li Chengzhi opened his briefcase and took out three black access cards and three sets of keys.

"These are for houses in the courtyard of the Huacheng Military District. That area is home to retired senior officials and military families. I heard your family recently moved to Huacheng and are having trouble adjusting to Binhai. These houses are for them, to help you feel more at ease."

"Thank you."

Chen Mo took the cards and keys without much reaction.

"No need to thank me. Honestly, this is nothing compared to what you've done for us. When the news broke, we were just as terrified as your family. You're a 'national treasure' now."

"I've also filed a request to assign a few Super Soldiers to serve as your bodyguards—alongside Wang Hai. The main reason this happened was because you lacked proper weapons and were caught off guard. With trained people around, this won't happen again."

"I'll be in the capital next month anyway," Chen Mo said. "There's a project I'll need your cooperation on. But for now, I'm in no mood."

He remembered how close he came to losing Xiao Yu—and the lives lost in the process.

His expression turned cold.

The mastermind behind this attack…

…would pay dearly.
