Chapter 267 - CHAPTER 267

Kuchiki Rukia's life as a Shinigami had never been particularly smooth.

Although she had been adopted into the prestigious Kuchiki Clan, one of the Four Great Noble Houses of Soul Society, that status had not brought her the happiness many imagined.

On the contrary, it had often become a burden.

When she entered the Shin'ō Academy, her fellow students' attitudes gradually changed.

Many childhood friends began keeping their distance.

To some nobles, she was merely a commoner who had been fortunate enough to receive noble patronage.

To others, she was an embarrassment to the Kuchiki name.

Whispers and prejudice followed her wherever she went.

After graduating from the Academy, she was assigned directly to the Thirteenth Division.

While such assignments were normal within the Gotei 13, many assumed her placement had been arranged through Kuchiki influence.

Rumors spread quickly.

To some Shinigami, she was simply another beneficiary of noble privilege.

As a result, Rukia often found herself isolated.

Yet despite the difficulties, she remained remarkably optimistic.

There were still people who treated her with kindness.

First, there was her adoptive brother.

Although Kuchiki Byakuya appeared cold and distant, he had never truly mistreated her.

He rarely expressed concern openly, but neither did he criticize her harshly.

Then there were the people who mattered most within the Thirteenth Division.

Captain Ukitake Jūshirō.

And Lieutenant Shiba Kaien.

Both men treated her warmly and fairly.

Especially Kaien.

His encouragement and guidance had helped Rukia through some of the most difficult periods of her life.

Within the Thirteenth Division, they gave her a sense of belonging she had rarely experienced elsewhere.

Unfortunately, despite years of service, Rukia remained an unseated officer.

Her combat abilities were respectable.

Her Kidō proficiency was above average.

Yet promotion continued to elude her.

Whenever she thought about it, a trace of frustration inevitably surfaced.

Still, life moved forward.

Years passed.

And eventually, she received a long-term assignment in the Human World.

The Thirteenth Division was responsible for much of Soul Society's routine Hollow purification operations.

Its members frequently rotated through the Human World, monitoring spiritual disturbances and performing Konsō on wandering souls before eliminating Hollows that threatened the living.

For most Shinigami, such assignments were relatively safe.

The majority of Hollows appearing in the Human World were ordinary creatures.

Many originated from souls that had lingered too long after death, gradually losing their hearts and transforming into Hollows.

Against trained Shinigami, such opponents posed little threat.

If an unusually powerful Hollow appeared, reinforcements could always be requested from Soul Society.

For Rukia, however, this was her first extended deployment.

Following the guidance of a Hell Butterfly, she arrived in a city known as Karakura Town.

Standing atop a utility pole, she gazed down at the bustling streets below.

Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

The Human World was vastly different from Soul Society.

The atmosphere.

The architecture.

The noise.

Everything felt fresh and unfamiliar.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

She looked forward to this assignment.

At the same time, another resident of Karakura Town was finishing his school day.

Kurosaki Ichigo.

Despite his intimidating appearance, Ichigo was an excellent student.

His grades ranked near the top of his class.

Unfortunately, his naturally bright orange hair often caused people to judge him unfairly.

Many assumed he was a delinquent before ever speaking to him.

The misunderstanding had followed him since childhood.

Because of his appearance, troublemakers frequently challenged him.

Fortunately, years of training at Gosuke Shigure's dojo had given him more than enough ability to defend himself.

Whenever someone picked a fight, Ichigo rarely backed down.

More often than not, the aggressor ended up regretting their decision.

Unfortunately, outsiders rarely witnessed how those conflicts began.

They only saw the aftermath.

As rumors spread, Ichigo gradually acquired a reputation as a troublemaker.

By the time he entered high school, many students already believed the stories.

As a result, few people approached him.

The situation irritated him immensely.

In truth, Ichigo was far more sociable than most people realized.

Before entering high school, he had genuinely hoped to make new friends.

Instead, he found himself isolated by misunderstandings.

Still, Ichigo was not the type to wallow in self-pity.

After all, even if ordinary people avoided him, he still had companions nobody else could see.

Spirits.

Ghosts.

Pluses.

Whatever name one preferred.

For as long as he could remember, Ichigo had possessed an unusually strong spiritual awareness.

When he was younger, he could only perceive vague outlines.

As he grew older, however, his vision became clearer and clearer.

At first, the experience frightened him.

Eventually, he realized that many spirits were no different from ordinary people.

They had personalities.

Feelings.

Dreams.

Regrets.

Once he understood that, his fear gradually disappeared.

That afternoon, Ichigo carried a bouquet of flowers through town.

The flowers were intended for a young spirit girl he had met recently.

The child had died not long ago and remained bound to the area where she had passed away.

After learning that she loved flowers, Ichigo had decided to bring her some.

When he arrived, however, he discovered that several local delinquents had deliberately knocked over the vase she treasured.

The spirit girl stood nearby looking miserable.

Seeing the scene immediately irritated him.

A brief confrontation followed.

Fortunately, the troublemakers left after receiving a stern warning.

Once they were gone, Ichigo picked up the vase.

He carefully cleaned it.

Then he arranged the flowers inside.

The little girl smiled brightly.

After chatting with her for a while, Ichigo felt unexpectedly satisfied.

With that, he turned and began heading home.

Then

A sudden chill ran through his body.

His footsteps stopped.

An intense feeling of dread seized his heart.

Immediately, memories surfaced.

Six years earlier.

The rainy day when he and his mother had encountered that terrifying monster near the river.

The day they had nearly died.

Even now, he could not fully remember what had happened afterward.

But he would never forget the overwhelming fear.

The sensation he felt now was nearly identical.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Ichigo's expression hardened.

Without hesitation, he turned and sprinted back toward the spirit girl's location.

As soon as he arrived, he saw it.

A towering white creature wearing a bone mask.

A Hollow.

The monster loomed over the frightened spirit girl, its claws reaching toward her.

The child trembled helplessly.

"Look out!"

Ichigo shouted instinctively.

Without thinking, he threw himself forward.

He did not know what the creature was.

He did not know how to fight it.

But he knew one thing.

If he did nothing, the girl would die.

Unfortunately, courage alone was not enough.

Compared to the Hollow, he was completely powerless.

The gap between them was overwhelming.

For the first time in years, Ichigo felt the same crushing helplessness he had experienced during the incident with his mother.

No matter how desperately he moved, he could not protect the person before him.

Then

A new presence appeared.

A figure dressed in black landed silently atop a nearby utility pole.

Ichigo immediately sensed something different.

Unlike ordinary spirits.

Unlike Hollows.

Unlike anything he had encountered before.

Instinctively, he looked up.

The newcomer was a young woman.

Black Shinigami robes fluttered in the evening breeze.

At her waist hung a katana.

Kuchiki Rukia.

Her eyes locked onto the Hollow.

Without hesitation, she drew her Zanpakutō.

A flash of steel cut through the air.

The blade descended.

And in that instant

For the first time in his life

Kurosaki Ichigo met a Shinigami.

At that moment, neither of them realized it.

But the gears of fate had already begun to turn.

A story that would shake Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the Human World alike was finally beginning.
