Among the elements, water was considered to be one of the weakest in terms of lethality. But among the rank 0 spells of this so called weakest element, water blade was one of the strongest spell when it came to killing.
By using this spell immediately without showing any signs spell casting showed that there was no doubt that Karina was definitely a very powerful spell fighter and not a research focused inexperienced magus apprentice.
But even though this attack was an almost perfect surprise attack, Fiona used her famous Wind Curtain to block it. The water blade was actually strong enough to destroy the wind curtain, but by then, Fiona had moved away from the rock with another rank 0 spell called Tempest Steps to increase her speed.
