Aerion turned back to the map table, his expression hardening back into the cold, calculating mask of the Praefect. His internal enemies were paralyzed. The Imperial hammer was half a day away. The armored mammoths were fed. He looked up at his three Tribunes. "Prepare the men, Tribunes," Aerion commanded, his voice echoing with absolute, deadly certainty. "Draw the barricades tight. When the Stormcloaks crest that ridge, we hold this line. Whiterun will not fall."
The heavy canvas of the command tent snapped lightly in the chilling morning wind, but inside, the atmosphere was a portrait of rigid military discipline as Aerion gave out the order. Tribunes Valerius, Hrogar, and Livia snapped to attention, their fists slamming against their breastplates in perfect, synchronized salutes.
"Yes, Praefect!" they chorused, the adrenaline of impending battle hardening their voices.
"Summon the Quaestors immediately," Aerion instructed, turning his golden eyes back down to the sprawling topographical map of Whiterun Hold. "I want the squad deployments finalized before the sun reaches its peak."
Valerius stepped to the tent flap and barked an order. Within moments, six Imperial Quaestors, the junior officers directly responsible for the low hierarchy command of the infantry squads, marched briskly into the tent. They formed a crisp line before the map table, their faces taut with anticipation, waiting for the Praefect to dictate their survival.
Aerion looked over the six officers. He didn't just see rank insignias; he saw the vital nervous system of his cohort. If they broke, the five hundred legionnaires would break with them.
"Quaestors," Aerion began, his tone lacking any theatrical bluster, favoring a cold, piercing pragmatism. "You have your designated assignments along the outer walls and the forward barricades. But beyond the positioning yo uall will be assigned to, I have three main directives for how you will conduct yourselves and your men upon this field today."
He leaned slightly over the table, his presence dominating the canvas room.
"First, there will be absolutely no reckless heroics," Aerion stated, his voice a low, lethal hum. "You are not here to win personal glory, and you are not here to break formation to chase a routing enemy. If a single squad charges blindly into the plains to secure a kill, they will create a gap in our defensive line. That gap will be exploited. If you act recklessly, you will not only die, but you will doom the men and women standing beside you who relied on your shield. You will hold the line until I explicitly command you to advance. Is that understood?"
"Understood, Praefect!" the six officers responded instantly.
"Second," Aerion continued, standing tall and locking eyes with each of them in turn. "You are sharing these walls and these barricades with the soldiers, city guards, and of course the civilian militias of Whiterun. They are not Imperial legionnaires. They do not have our training, and they do not have our steel. But today, they are your brothers and your sisters in arms. You will treat them as such."
Aerion's eyes narrowed, a dangerous edge bleeding into his voice. "Remind your legionnaires that we are guests in this city, invited by the Jarl to shed blood in its defense. I expect your men to get along with the Whiterun soldiers. Share your water, steady their nerves, and fight side by side with them as equals. I will not tolerate a single breath of Imperial arrogance on my line. If any of your men cause a disturbance, mock the local militia, or besmirch the reputation of the Imperial Legion and the Empire in the eyes of the people we are bleeding to protect... I will not be lenient with my punishments. Make sure your men understand the politics of their survival."
The Quaestors swallowed hard, the sheer, imposing gravity of the Altmer's warning sinking deep into their bones. They nodded their heads rapidly, snapping off crisp salutes to acknowledge the absolute nature of the orders.
"Return to your squads, and immediately lock down the perimeter," Aerion dismissed them.
As the Quaestors hurried out of the tent to relay the commands to the rank and file, the heavy canvas flap was pushed aside once more.
To Aerion's mild surprise, it was not another courier. It was actually Jarl Balgruuf ducked his massive frame into the command tent, followed closely by his dark elven housecarl Irileth, his proud brother Hrongar, and the increasingly nervous Commander Caius.
Aerion immediately straightened up, gesturing for Valerius, Hrogar, and Livia to stand at attention. The three Tribunes offered sharp, flawless salutes to the ruler of the hold.
Aeloria, standing near the back of the tent with Valdemar, stepped forward and offered a respectful, warm greeting to the Jarl.
"Dragonborn. Praefect," Jarl Balgruuf returned the greeting, his voice heavy with the exhaustion of command but his eyes burning with a fierce, Nordic resilience. He walked directly to the map table, placing his large hands on the wooden edges, looking down at the scattered wooden markers.
"I wanted to see the disposition of the legionnaires under your command for myself," Jarl Balgruuf explained, looking up at Aerion. "Tell me your plan, Aerion. How exactly are you deploying your Imperial unit?"
Aerion stepped beside the Jarl, tracing a gauntleted finger across the painted map.
"We are acting as the absolute anchor for the outer perimeter, my Jarl," Aerion explained methodically. "I have divided the cohort into three primary phalanxes. The center will hold the main paved approach leading to the drawbridge, heavily reinforced by timber barricades to funnel their charges. The left and right flanks will spread along the outer stone walls, acting as a hardened shield wall to protect your archers stationed on the parapets above."
Aerion then tapped two wide, open areas on the extreme flanks of the Imperial line. "And here, positioned just outside the barricades in the tall grass, I have stationed the mammoth herd. They are fully armored and awaiting my command. When the Stormcloaks commit their heavy infantry to the center, the herd will crush their flanks."
Jarl Balgruuf studied the map intently for a long, quiet moment, his tactical mind processing the geometry of the defense. Slowly, a deeply satisfied nod followed.
"It complements our strategy perfectly," he rumbled, pointing a thick finger at the inner walls and the elevated platforms near the city gates. "I have stationed the bulk of the Whiterun standing guards and soldiers here, directly behind your lines, to act as immediate reinforcements if the barricades buckle. The civilian militias are holding the higher elevations, tasked exclusively with raining arrows and defending against siege ladders. Your legionnaires provide the solid anvil we desperately needed."
Jarl Balgruuf looked up, his expression hardening. "What is the latest intelligence on the enemy? And Tullius?"
"The Stormcloaks have broken their forward camps," Aerion informed the Jarl, his tone grave. "Our scouts report massive, coordinated movement from the north, the east, and the southeast. They are converging on the city. They will likely be within visual range by noon."
He paused, offering the silver lining. "However, the main Imperial Army in Skyrim, all thirty eight thousand men, is currently force marching across the western plains. They are half a day out. They will arrive before sunset."
Hearing that number, Jarl Balgruuf let out a long, profound sigh of relief. The sheer tension that had been keeping his shoulders rigid seemed to slightly abate.
"Thank the Divines," Jarl Balgruuf whispered, running a hand through his blond hair. "We just have to hold the line until the sun goes down. If we can survive the initial assault, Tullius will shatter them against our walls."
The Jarl stood up straight, adjusting his heavy fur mantle. He looked at the faces of his council, then at Aerion.
"If the Stormcloaks are going to crest those hills by noon," he decided, his voice finding its booming, regal cadence, "then my people need to hear from their Jarl before the blood begins to spill."
Aerion nodded his head in immediate agreement. "Your words and your physical presence on the battlements right now would exponentially increase the morale of both the city guard and my legionnaires, my Jarl. A soldier fights vastly harder when he knows his king is standing in the mud with him."
"The Praefect is right," Irileth agreed, her hand resting on her ebony blade. "They need to see you, my Jarl. They need to know what they are dying for."
Commander Caius offered a hasty, frantic nod of support. "A speech would do wonders for the militia's nerves, my Jarl. They are terrified."
"Then let us not keep them waiting," Jarl Balgruuf commanded.
The Jarl turned and led the group out of the command tent, marching with heavy, purposeful strides through the fortified camp and ascending the stone stairs that led to the wide, elevated parapets of the outer wall overlooking the plains.
The view from the battlements was staggering.
Below them, filling the staging grounds, the barricades, and the walls, were tens of thousands of armed men and women. The yellow and yellow tunics of the Whiterun guard mixed with the boiled leather of the civilian militia, while the disciplined, crimson clad ranks of the Imperial Legion held the absolute front line. The air was thick with the sound of nervously clanking steel, the stomping of boots, and the low, terrified murmurs of a city waiting for the axe to fall.
Jarl Balgruuf stepped up to the very center of the battlements, the wind whipping his heavy cloak around his broad shoulders. Irileth immediately took her position to his left, her eyes constantly scanning the crowds for threats, followed closely by Hrongar and Commander Caius.
To the Jarl's right stood Aerion, an imposing, towering figure in his Nordic Carved Armor and the bronze mask of Krosis. Behind him stood Aeloria, her Dragonborn presence commanding its own unique reverence, flanked by the hardened mercenaries Jenassa, Lydia, and Valdemar.
Jarl Balgruuf looked out over the massive sea of faces, but the ambient noise of the army was too loud.
Aerion stepped forward. He drew a quick breath, silently channeling a subtle, highly concentrated pulse of Alteration and Illusion magic to amplify the acoustics of his voice, projecting it flawlessly across the entire battlefield.
"SOLDIERS OF WHITERUN! LEGIONNAIRES OF THE EMPIRE!"
Aerion's voice thundered across the plains, completely drowning out the clatter of weapons and the nervous chatter. It was a voice that demanded absolute, unquestioning obedience. The tens of thousands of men and women instantly fell silent, turning their faces upward toward the battlements.
"STILL YOUR BLADES AND LISTEN!" Aerion roared, gesturing toward the center of the wall. "YOUR JARL SPEAKS!"
The silence that fell over the army was absolute, save for the snapping of the banners in the wind.
Jarl Balgruuf stepped forward, placing his heavy hands on the cold stone of the parapet. He looked down at the faces of his people, the Whiterun soldiers, the militias that consists of commoners, the city guards, and the disciplined faces of the Imperial troops who had marched to save them.
When Jarl Balgruuf spoke, he didn't need magic. His voice carried the raw, booming, emotional weight of a true Nordic king who loved his people fiercely.
"Brave men and women of Whiterun!" Jarl Balgruuf began, his voice echoing over the silent army. "And brave men and women of the Imperial Legion, who have marched across Skyrim to stand with us today!"
He gripped the stone tighter, his expression turning to one of profound, righteous sorrow.
"For months, I have tried to keep the chaos of this civil war at bay!" Jarl Balgruuf shouted, his words ringing with undeniable truth. "I tried to keep the peace for Whiterun! I tried to spare your homes, your farms, and your families from the madness of a fractured province! But the chaos would not leave us be. The chaos has come knocking on our very doors!"
He gestured broadly toward the eastern horizon, where the enemy was marching.
"I thought that as brothers and sisters of Skyrim, Ulfric and his Stormcloaks would understand the stand that Whiterun chose to take!" Jarl Balgruuf's voice rose in volume, thick with betrayal and anger. "I thought they would respect our neutrality! But it turns out, our peace does not sit well with them. They would rather see this city burn than see it stand independent of their rebellion!"
Jarl Balgruuf leaned forward over the battlements, his eyes burning with a fierce, unyielding light.
"And so, today, all of us are forced to take a stand! But hear me now! You are not standing to defend this hold for politics! You are not fighting to defend me, your Jarl! You are fighting to defend your homes! Your families! Your peace!"
The Jarl's voice dropped slightly, carrying a heavy, undeniable realism that resonated deep in the chest of every soldier listening.
"I will not lie to you. The enemy is vast, and the battle will be brutal. By the time the sun sets, some of you may be injured. Some of you may be permanently scarred. And some of you... will die upon these plains."
Jarl Balgruuf paused, letting the heavy, terrifying truth settle over the army, before roaring back with an earth shattering intensity.
"But this hold, and the history of Skyrim, will remember every single drop of blood you shed! The bards will make songs and poems of the deeds you accomplish here today! They will sing of the men and women who stood before a tyrant's army and refused to break! So ready your steel! String your bows! And let your hearts be full of pride, because you are standing on the right side of history!"
Jarl Balgruuf raised a massive, mailed fist into the air, his final words tearing through the wind.
"Upon this field today, there are no Whiterun soldiers! There are no Imperial Legionnaires! There are only the sons and daughters of Skyrim, fighting to protect their home! FOR WHITERUN!"
The response was not merely a cheer, it was a physical, seismic explosion of sound.
Tens of thousands of voices roared in perfect, unified defiance. Swords were drawn and slammed violently against steel shields, the rhythmic, deafening clatter shaking the very foundations of the city walls. The raw, desperate terror that had gripped the militias evaporated in an instant, replaced by a blinding, ferocious adrenaline.
Aerion, standing to the right of the Jarl, felt the undeniable, infectious power of the moment. He drew his Ebony Greatsword, raising the pitch black blade high into the air, and let out a massive, roaring cheer of his own, joining Aeloria, Lydia, Jenassa, Valdemar, and the entire command staff in the triumphant cry.
Jarl Balgruuf had forged an army out of a terrified populace in a matter of minutes.
The cheers eventually died down, replaced by a focused, lethal readiness. The soldiers gripped their weapons, their eyes locked on the horizon.
They did not have to wait long.
As the sun finally reached its apex at high noon, casting harsh, direct light over the golden tundra, the enemy finally revealed themselves.
It began as a dark, shifting blur on the distant hills to the north, the east, and the southeast. Within minutes, the blur resolved into a massive, terrifying reality.
Thousands upon thousands of Stormcloak soldiers, clad in blue and chainmail, crested the ridges. The sheer scale of the rebel army was breathtaking. They marched in massive, staggered blocks of infantry, their banners snapping in the wind, the sunlight catching on a sea of iron axes and steel swords.
But as they approached the outer plains, just beyond the maximum range of the Whiterun archers, the massive army suddenly ground to a halt.
From his elevated vantage point on the walls, Aerion's golden eyes narrowed sharply behind his mask. He watched as the Stormcloak infantry formations parted, allowing dozens of heavy, ox-drawn wooden carts to be dragged to the absolute front of their lines.
The rebels began rapidly unloading massive, pre-fabricated timber beams, heavy iron winches, and thick braided ropes.
Jarl Balgruuf, peering over the stone parapet, realized instantly what they were doing. The color drained from his face, replaced by a deep, visceral disgust. He swore violently under his breath.
"Catapults," he spat, his fists clenching tight enough to crack stone. "They are building siege engines. Ulfric doesn't just want to breach the gates. He intends to bombard the city."
Jarl Balgruuf looked at Aerion, sheer horror in his eyes. "If those stones clear the walls, they will crash directly into the Plains District. They will slaughter civilians in their homes. He doesn't care about the destruction. He just wants the city."
Aerion's jaw tightened. He knew this perfectly well. In the game, the bombardment of Whiterun was a scripted event that set a few roofs on fire while the player go through the streets. But this was reality. A single two hundred pound boulder crashing through the wooden roof of a crowded tavern or a civilian home would turn dozens of innocent people into bloody paste instantly.
Aerion did not hesitate. He spun away from the parapet, looking down at his command staff below.
"TRIBUNES! PREPARE FOR BOMBARDMENT!" Aerion roared, his voice cutting through the rising panic. "SHIELDS UP! GET THE MILITIA OFF THE EXPOSED WOODEN PLATFORMS!"
The order rippled through the ranks. Thousands of soldiers instantly raised their shields, overlapping them in desperate turtle formations, bracing themselves against the barricades and the stone walls.
Out on the flanks, the eleven armored mammoths let out a chorus of deafening, agitated trumpets, sensing the impending violence in the air, shifting their massive weight and pawing at the dirt.
Across the plains, the Stormcloak engineers worked with terrifying speed. Within twenty minutes, over a dozen massive, heavy timber catapults were fully assembled and ratcheted back, their throwing cups loaded with massive, jagged boulders carved from the mountain rock.
A distant horn blew from the Stormcloak lines.
"INCOMING!" Commander Caius screamed from the walls.
The heavy wooden arms of the catapults snapped forward with a resounding, collective CRACK that echoed across the valley.
A dozen massive boulders were launched into the sky, arcing high over the plains, spinning with lethal, crushing momentum directly toward the Imperial barricades, the mammoth herds, and the city walls.
Aerion acted on pure, accelerated instinct. He knew the wooden barricades and the men behind them would be instantly obliterated by a direct hit.
He lunged forward, vaulting entirely over the stone parapet and dropping twenty feet down to the dirt below, landing with a heavy, metallic crash directly in front of the primary Imperial shield wall.
He didn't draw his sword. He didn't issue an order. He thrust both of his hands upward toward the sky.
Aerion bypassed his mortal limitations entirely, directly tapping into the infinite, cosmic reservoir of the Eye of Magnus resting securely within his dimensional inventory. The rush of pure, unadulterated Magicka that flooded his veins was intoxicating, allowing him to bypass the usual charging time of high tier destruction spells.
His hands erupted in blinding, concentrated spheres of volatile plasma.
Aerion unleashed a relentless, staggering barrage of Elemental Blasts.
The superheated spheres of fire and lightning tore from his palms at blinding speed, screaming upward into the sky like artillery fire. He tracked the falling boulders with terrifying, mathematical precision.
The first Elemental Blast collided with a massive rock directly over the central barricade.
The explosion was deafening. The sheer kinetic and thermal shockwave shattered the boulder mid air, vaporizing the moisture in the rock and blowing it into thousands of harmless, pebble sized fragments that rained down harmlessly upon the raised Imperial shields like heavy hail.
Aerion didn't stop. He became a living anti aircraft battery.
He pivoted flawlessly, firing two more blasts into the sky, intercepting a pair of boulders aimed directly at the mammoth pens. The rocks exploded into dust and fire high above the beasts, the concussive force rattling the steel plates of their armor but leaving them entirely unharmed.
He fired again, and again, channeling the infinite well of Magnus to maintain a rate of fire that would have instantly drained any master wizard in Skyrim to the point of fatal exhaustion. Bright flashes of plasma illuminated the battlefield, the sound of detonating rock drowning out the screams of the soldiers.
But Aerion was only one man. He could not cover the entire span of the massive city walls.
He successfully shattered eight of the incoming boulders, an impossible feat of magical supremacy.
But four of them slipped past his defensive net.
One boulder slammed brutally into the outer stone wall near the western gate, shattering a massive chunk of ancient masonry and sending lethal, jagged shrapnel flying into a squad of Whiterun guards, cutting them down instantly in a spray of blood.
Another cleared the wall entirely, crashing down into the Plains District with a sickening, hollow thud, the distant sound of splintering timber and screaming civilians confirming Balgruuf's darkest fears.
Two more struck the forward barricades on the extreme flanks, obliterating the heavy wooden spikes and instantly crushing six Imperial legionnaires beneath their immense weight.
Up on the battlements, Jarl Balgruuf, Irileth, and Hrongar stood completely paralyzed with shock. They had instinctively ducked when the catapults fired, but they had immediately raised their heads to witness the impossible spectacle of their Praefect shooting massive siege boulders out of the sky with raw, continuous bursts of raw magic.
"By the Gods..." Jarl Balgruuf breathed, his eyes wide in disbelief as he stared down at the High Elf whose hands were still smoking with residual plasma. "What manner of power is that?"
Aerion lowered his hands, his chest heaving slightly not from magical exhaustion, but from the sheer adrenaline of tracking the targets. He looked up at the Jarl.
"It is merely magic, my Jarl," Aerion yelled back, playing off the reality breaking display as simple arcane mastery. "There are always ways around destruction if you know how to wield the elements!"
He turned his attention back to the plains. The Stormcloak engineers were already ratcheting the catapult arms back, a fresh supply of boulders being loaded into the cups.
Aerion's analytical mind processed the dire reality instantly. He could not maintain this defense indefinitely. Even with infinite Magicka, human error was inevitable. If he missed even one rock aimed at the center, hundreds of men would die. They could not sit behind the walls and endure a prolonged, systematic bombardment.
The catapults had to be destroyed before the infantry charge began. A wildly risky, incredibly dangerous idea clicked into place in his mind. Aerion turned and sprinted back toward the battlements, looking up at Aeloria, Balgruuf, and his command staff. "WE CANNOT ENDURE ANOTHER VOLLEY!" Aerion roared over the din of the panicked army. "THEY ARE BLEEDING US FROM A DISTANCE! I AM TAKING OUT THE SIEGE ENGINES!"
