Justin's POV
The color left my face before I even knew what to do with my hands.
She was on the carpet, the neat geometry of her office suddenly made grotesque by the way her body lay like a page torn out of the book. Her cheek was pale in a way that made the world go thin at the edges; the air seemed to thin too, like someone had pulled a plug and the room forgot how to breathe. My first thought was dirty with the bluntness of it that I'd failed her. Ten thousand other alarms tried to reassert themselves, the meeting schedule, the emails but all of them sounded like somebody else's life.
"Elena!" I yelled before I had a plan.
