Chapter 1 - The boy who chased storms

The wind never stopped moving in Aetherfall Valley.

It swept through the towering cliffs like a restless spirit, whistling between the jagged rocks and carrying the scent of rain from the distant sea. Villagers had grown used to it over the years. Some even said the wind had a mind of its own.

But there was one boy who believed it truly did.

And he was determined to catch it.

Kael sprinted across the grassy ridge at the edge of the valley, his boots kicking up dust as the wind howled around him. His bright hair — a wild mix of electric blue and fiery orange — whipped behind him like a flame caught in a storm.

"Come on… come on…" he muttered, grinning.

A gust surged past him.

Kael jumped.

His hand shot out toward the swirling air like he could grab it.

The wind twisted violently around his fingers — then vanished.

He landed hard on the ground with a thud.

"…Almost."

Kael lay there for a moment, staring up at the sky. Massive clouds rolled slowly overhead, dark and heavy with rain.

A storm was coming.

Perfect.

A familiar voice called from behind him.

"You're going to break your neck one day."

Kael rolled onto his side.

Standing on a stone outcrop nearby was a tall boy with sharp features and calm gray eyes. His dark hair was short and neat, a few faint silver strands glinting in the sunlight.

Ryn.

Kael groaned.

"You've been watching this whole time, haven't you?"

"Yes."

"And you didn't help?"

"You were chasing the wind."

Ryn crossed his arms.

"There isn't much I can do about that."

Kael sat up and dusted off his clothes.

His outfit was a strange mix of styles — a bright blue jacket with traditional folded sleeves, a red scarf wrapped loosely around his neck, dark pants strapped with belts and pockets, and sturdy boots built for movement.

Everything about him screamed energy.

Ryn, on the other hand, looked composed even standing still.

He wore a layered outfit combining traditional robes with modern armor plating, colored in deep greens and golds. A thick belt held the fabric together, and his boots were reinforced with stone-like plating.

Where Kael looked like a rushing storm…

Ryn looked like the mountain beneath it.

"You know," Kael said, standing up, "one day I'm actually going to control it."

"The wind?"

"The storm."

Kael pointed toward the sky dramatically.

"Not just wind. Lightning. Thunder. All of it."

Ryn raised an eyebrow.

"You've been saying that since you were eight."

"And I'm still right."

Kael grinned.

Then he looked out toward the horizon.

Beyond the valley cliffs, the world stretched endlessly — distant islands, mountain ranges, unknown lands.

Adventure.

Power.

Freedom.

Somewhere out there… something was waiting.

Kael clenched his fist.

"I'm not staying in this valley forever."

Ryn didn't answer right away.

The wind rustled through the grass between them.

Finally he said quietly,

"I know."

Kael blinked.

"You do?"

"Yes."

Ryn stepped down from the stone and walked closer.

"Because wherever you go… trouble follows."

Kael burst out laughing.

"HEY!"

Suddenly—

BOOM.

Thunder cracked across the sky.

Both boys looked up.

Dark storm clouds were rolling in far faster than usual.

The wind changed.

It became violent.

Wild.

Kael felt something strange.

The air around him began to vibrate.

A faint blue spark flickered across his fingers.

His eyes widened.

"Ryn…"

"What?"

"I think—"

Lightning exploded across the sky.

CRACK.

A bolt struck the cliffside just meters away.

The ground shook violently.

Ryn instantly raised his arm.

The earth beneath them surged upward like a shield of stone.

Rocks slammed together, forming a barrier.

Debris scattered everywhere.

When the dust cleared…

Kael stood frozen.

Electricity was dancing across his hands.

Tiny streaks of lightning.

Alive.

Ryn stared.

"…Kael."

Kael slowly looked down at his hands.

The wind around him began swirling violently.

His heart pounded.

"Did you see that?!"

"Yes."

Kael's grin slowly spread across his face.

"It's happening."

The storm above roared louder.

Lightning flashed again.

But this time…

It didn't feel random.

It felt like it was responding to him.

Kael clenched his fist.

Energy crackled between his fingers.

Ryn watched carefully.

The ground beneath his feet trembled slightly.

His own power reacting instinctively.

Storm.

Stone.

Two forces awakening at the same moment.

And somewhere far beyond the valley…

Someone else felt it too.
