Damien's shadows moved through the night like silent specters, approaching the massive castle of Dizara from the east. The maritime kingdom sprawled across the coastline, its towers rising from the cliffs like jagged teeth, its harbors filled with ships bearing the trident sigil of Poseidon. Stories of the Sea God's cruelty had reached Orario long before Damien had taken the throne....tales of drowned cities, of sailors sacrificed to appease his wrath, of a dictatorship built on fear and blood.
But Damien had chosen not to act. Not until provoked.
Now, it seemed, the provocation had come.
The Nightwatch Owl...one of the new monsters he had slain in the deeper floors...perched on a rocky outcropping far from the castle walls. Its form was small, unobtrusive, its feathers shifting color to match the darkness around it. Its eyes, however, were extraordinary. They could see for miles, piercing through shadow and distance alike, and they missed nothing.
Through the owl's eyes, Damien watched.
The castle's great hall was alive with debauchery. Naked women danced between tables laden with wine and roasted meats. Gods lounged on silk cushions, their laughter echoing off the marble walls. The air was thick with the scent of incense and sweat, and the sounds of pleasure mingled with the clink of goblets.
On one of the balconies overlooking the hall, three figures stood apart.
Damien recognized the first immediately. Dian Cecht—the god who had led the deserters from Orario, the one who had chosen exile over submission. He was speaking animatedly to a white-haired, muscular old god with a commanding presence.
Zeus, Damien thought. That must be him.
And beside Zeus stood another figure Damien knew well. Odin. The All-Father. The one-eyed god who had warned him of the coming storm.
There were others, too. Gods Damien did not recognize, their forms radiant with power, their eyes gleaming with ancient malice.
The owl shifted its position, finding a better vantage point.
The banquet continued. The orgy, the drinks, the drugs—all of it was background noise to what came next.
A door opened at the far end of the hall, and several figures entered.
They were young. Nude. No older than sixteen or seventeen. Boys and girls, their bodies unmarked, their eyes empty. They were not sex slaves—Damien could see that immediately. They were something else. Something worse.
Zeus began presenting them.
The gods bid on them like livestock.
Dian Cecht acquired one—a girl with silver hair and hollow eyes. He examined her like a merchant inspecting goods, turning her around, checking her limbs, her teeth, her skin.
What are they doing? Damien wondered.
And then he understood.
'Could these be... the Avatars?'
The thought made his blood run cold.
Kali had spoken of the Old Gods creating demi-god vessels—bodies capable of channeling divine power. But this was different. These were not offspring. They were hosts. Empty shells waiting to be filled.
The owl watched as a cloaked man entered the hall.
He was a mage—Damien could tell from his robes, from the staff he carried, from the way the gods parted to let him pass. His face was hidden beneath a deep hood, but his hands were visible—gnarled, ancient, covered in scars.
He approached the first vessel.
The mage knelt, pressing his palms to the ground. The air around him shimmered with magic—not Arcanum, but something else. Something darker. Alchemy, perhaps. Or something older.
The god who had purchased the vessel stepped forward. His form began to dissolve, his body crumbling away like ash in the wind. His soul—a blazing core of divine energy—floated free.
And then it entered the vessel.
The young body convulsed, arching off the ground. The eyes flew open, blazing with power. The skin shimmered, the features shifting, the form expanding as the god's essence took hold.
When it was over, the vessel was no longer a child.
It was a god.
The new god rose to their feet, examining their hands, their body, their new form. They laughed—a sound of pure, unrestrained joy...and unleashed a wave of Arcanum that sent the dancers scattering.
The other gods applauded.
Damien watched as the process repeated. Again and again. Gods dissolving, souls entering vessels, new forms rising. Each one more powerful than the last.
'So that is how they are doing it' he thought. 'They are transferring their souls into mortal bodies. Bodies that can channel Arcanum without breaking'
He needed to hear what Zeus was saying.
The owl crept closer, pushing its luck, moving just within range of the balcony.
Zeus raised his hands, his voice carrying across the hall.
"My fellow gods and goddesses! Honorable and great ones! Long have we endured this humiliation that Ouranos forced upon us—being disgraced and removed of our glorious divinities, forced to walk the lands as mortals. With mortals."
He spat the word like poison.
"The same mortals that used to beg to look at us now walk with us. The same mortals that dedicated their lives and existence are now worshiping a new man—a man who calls himself a God-King!"
The hall erupted in murmurs of outrage.
"The audacity to proclaim godhood upon us as a mere mortal! That man, of course, is the new King of Orario—backed by a bunch of treacherous gods."
Zeus's eyes blazed with fury.
"We will make sure he suffers. We will make sure he and Ouranos pay for this humiliation. We are GODS! This world, and Heaven, and anything in between... belongs to US!"
The crowd roared.
"And they will know it. And they will remember it. By blood. We will make him suffer. Damien Ardent, the false Shadow Monarch—taking over our older brother's title as well—shall pay for his transgressions and disrespect."
Zeus pointed to the sky.
"It will be I that makes him pay. Your true King. I, the King of Gods—ZEUS!"
The chant began. "ZEUS! ZEUS! ZEUS!"
And then the owl died.
An arrow pierced its chest, the projectile striking with impossible accuracy. The shadow dissolved, the connection severed, and Damien's vision went dark.
The last thing he saw was the archer—a cloaked man with a long beard, a bow in his hands, and a smile on his face. A god of the hunt.
One Damien did not recognize.
