The journey down to the Twenty Seventh Floor went much as expected.
The expedition advanced along familiar paths, Damien's shadows flowing ahead like a living tide, erasing threats before they could fully form. Floors that once demanded caution were reduced to echoes and drifting ash. Still, unlike the ascent, the adventurers were no longer mere spectators.
Something had changed.
From the moment they passed deeper thresholds, the Dungeon reacted.
Monsters spawned in dense, relentless waves. Not scattered encounters, but coordinated pressure. Ambushes layered atop ambushes, enemies striking from blind angles, retreating only to return again moments later. It was subtle, but unmistakable.
The Dungeon had noticed them.
It was actively resisting.
Even so, against the combined might of Loki and Hestia Familia, resistance only meant delay. Steel flashed, magic thundered, shadows devoured. The waves broke again and again, until at last, the terrain opened into a vast cavern bathed in pale blue light.
They had arrived.
The Twenty Seventh Floor.
At its heart lay a massive lake, its surface far too restless to be natural. The water churned slowly, spiraling inward, as if something immense stirred beneath it. Ripples spread outward in heavy pulses, each one carrying pressure that even veteran adventurers felt in their bones.
Damien's gaze narrowed.
"Amphisbaena," he said.
Finn stepped beside him, eyes sharp. "The twin headed water dragon. Unlike Goliath, it won't stand its ground. It can move between floors, and if pressured too hard, it will flee."
"So we don't give it the chance," Damien replied calmly.
Finn nodded. "Understood."
Without further words, Damien stepped forward.
Samira fell in at his side, her presence steady and lethal. Ryuu followed, eyes focused
...
The lake exploded.
Water surged skyward as something colossal tore itself free from the depths, a spiraling column of white and blue crashing down in waves that shook the entire cavern. Scales glistened under the dungeon's pale light, slick with water, each one thicker than a shield. Two massive necks rose from the churning surface, twisting independently, each crowned with a draconic head lined with jagged fangs.
Amphisbaena.
Its twin heads roared in discordant harmony, one exhaling a torrent of compressed water sharp enough to carve stone, the other releasing a freezing breath that turned the air brittle and white.
"Contact!" Samira shouted, already moving.
Damien's daggers slid into his hands, the new blades humming faintly as shadows coiled around his arms. "Ryuu, left head. Samira, right. Don't let them sync their attacks!"
"Understood," Ryuu replied instantly, her expression calm, eyes sharp as emerald glass.
Samira grinned beneath her veil. "Try to keep up, my lord."
The dragon struck first.
The right head lunged, jaws snapping with crushing force. Samira vanished in a blur, her body twisting aside as the fangs slammed into stone where she had stood a heartbeat before. She countered instantly, blades flashing as she carved along the side of the neck, sparks and blood spraying as her attack skidded across reinforced scales.
"Tough hide!" she called out. "I'll break it down!"
The left head reared back, frost condensing around its maw.
"Move!" Ryuu shouted.
Damien reacted first, grabbing Ryuu by the waist and pulling her aside as a wave of freezing breath tore through the space they had occupied. Stone cracked. Ice spread outward like a living thing.
Damien clicked his tongue. "That was close."
Ryuu nodded once. "I'll suppress its breath."
She stepped forward, green light igniting around her body as wind magic spiraled into existence. "Aero!"
Blades of compressed air slammed into the dragon's head, forcing its jaws shut mid attack. The Amphisbaena shrieked, thrashing violently, water exploding outward as its massive body twisted.
"Now!" Damien barked.
He slammed his foot down.
"Arise."
The lake darkened.
Shadows poured from Damien's feet and spilled across the water like ink. Twenty figures emerged, armored silhouettes moving with unnatural coordination. Behind them, a taller presence rose.
Igris.
Sword drawn, crimson eyes locked on the lake.
"Dive," Damien ordered calmly.
Without hesitation, the shadows leapt.
They plunged into the water one after another, disappearing beneath the surface. Unlike mortals, they did not slow, did not gasp. Beneath the lake, darkness moved.
Underwater, the Amphisbaena's true body revealed itself. A serpentine mass coiled through the depths, muscles flexing as it attempted to reposition, its tail smashing into shadows, sending shockwaves through the lake.
It did not matter.
The adventurer shadows swarmed it.
Blades bit into softer underbelly scales. Spears pinned fins and joints. One shadow latched onto the creature's spine, stabbing repeatedly, while another drove a greatsword into the base of its tail, anchoring it in place.
The dragon thrashed violently.
Above water, the heads reacted instantly.
The right head snapped upward and unleashed a high pressure jet straight at Damien.
"Cover me!" Damien shouted.
Samira was already there.
She crossed her blades, activating her skill, aura flaring as she took the brunt of the attack head on. The water blast smashed into her guard, carving trenches into the ground, but she held, boots digging deep.
"Do it now!" she snarled.
Damien moved.
Shadow wrapped around his legs as he launched himself upward, daggers spinning in his grip. He twisted midair, avoiding snapping jaws, and drove both blades into the left head's eye.
The Amphisbaena screamed.
Ryuu followed instantly, leaping higher than seemed possible, her blade glowing as she invoked her technique. She struck along the same wound Damien had opened, her attack precise and merciless.
"Luminous Wind!"
The blade flashed.
The left head separated from the body in a violent spray of blood and water, crashing lifelessly into the lake.
For a brief moment, silence.
Then the remaining head roared in pure fury.
It plunged back into the water, dragging the massive body with it, the lake erupting as it tried to flee downward, toward deeper floors.
"It's escaping!" Samira shouted.
"No," Damien said quietly.
He stepped forward, shadows rippling around him. "It won't."
He looked at Igris. "With me."
Without another word, Damien dove.
Cold enveloped him instantly. Pressure crushed down as he descended rapidly, shadow reinforcing his body. Igris followed beside him, sword cutting through the water like it wasn't there.
Below them, the Amphisbaena writhed, shadows clinging to it, stabbing, restraining, slowing it just enough.
The remaining head turned, jaws opening wide.
Damien kicked off a shadow's shoulder, accelerating forward. The dragon snapped at him, but Igris intercepted, blade locking with fangs, sparks flashing even underwater.
"Now, my lord," Igris intoned.
Damien twisted around the neck, daggers glowing as shadow surged into the blades.
He struck once.
Twice.
The third strike severed bone.
The second head came free.
The body convulsed violently, then went limp, sinking slowly as shadows released it.
Damien exhaled, floating for a moment before shadows carried him upward.
When he broke the surface, the cavern erupted in cheers.
Samira laughed, resting her blades on her shoulders. "That was fun."
Ryuu sheathed her weapon, looking at Damien with a small, rare smile. "Clean execution."
Damien wiped water from his face and glanced at the lifeless heads floating nearby. "Good teamwork."
Behind him, the shadows faded back into his feet, the lake finally still.
The path forward was open.
...
Gareth threw his head back and laughed, the sound booming across the cavern.
"HAHAHAHA! Did you see that?" he roared. "Impressive. Very, very impressive."
Finn watched the settling lake with calm, assessing eyes, his hands folded behind his back. "That settles it. He's proven himself. His Familia is a force to be reckoned with. Bringing down the Amphisbaena on their own is no small feat, especially without a single casualty."
His gaze flicked briefly toward Damien, still dripping water as his shadows melted back into him.
"Even his shadows returned intact," Finn added. "That level of control is rare."
Riveria adjusted her glasses, light reflecting off the lenses as she analyzed the battlefield. "I would go further than that," she said coolly. "That was cleaner than most Amphisbaena subjugations we've conducted in the past. A monster that fully exploits its terrain advantage, neutralized without losses or prolonged engagement. That is beyond impressive."
Gareth crossed his arms, nodding with a wide grin. "Aye. I'll drink to that."
Finn allowed himself a small smile, subtle but genuine. "For the first time in a long while… I have real hope. Hope that this expedition will accomplish something truly great."
Gareth's grin softened, his voice carrying a rare seriousness. "Me too, Finn. Me too."
Riveria turned sharply, staff tapping once against the stone. "Don't get complacent," she warned. "We still have work ahead of us. The next Monster Rex won't be so forgiving."
Her lips curved slightly, just enough to be dangerous. "Let's show Damien how Loki Familia handles a true hunt. We can't allow ourselves to be completely outshone by a rookie, can we?"
Gareth burst into laughter again, cracking his knuckles. "Well now, would you look at that. The bookworm wants to flex."
He rolled his shoulders, eyes gleaming. "I'm in."
Around them, the expedition buzzed with renewed energy. Confidence spread like wildfire, and for the first time since descending past the upper floors, it felt as though the Dungeon itself had been put on notice.
This expedition was different.
