The water exploded.

Not outward — upward.

A column of black surged into the cavern like the river itself had decided to stand. Stone cracked as the pressure slammed into the pillars, sending shards skittering across the shore.

Ethan rolled back on instinct, barely avoiding a spray that hissed when it touched the ground.

The thing rose higher.

Limbs unfolded from liquid shadow, joints bending the wrong way, stretching too long before snapping into place. Its surface wasn't flesh, not really — more like hardened water wrapped around something old and wrong. Blue crystal veins flared along its body, mirroring the walls.

Dungeon-made.

No. Worse.

Dungeon-fed.

Ethan came up on one knee, blade already in hand.

"Okay," he breathed. "Big one."

The creature's head formed last.

A hollow curve like a mask carved from obsidian, with no eyes — just a single vertical slit that pulsed faintly, as if tasting the air.

The slit turned toward him.

The vibration hit.

Ethan staggered, teeth rattling as pressure slammed into his chest. It wasn't mana. It wasn't killing intent.

It was attention.

The monster stepped forward.

The river screamed back to life behind it, water rushing as if relieved it could move again.

Ethan didn't wait.

He sprinted.

The creature's arm snapped out, elongating mid-swing. Ethan slid under it, boots skidding across wet stone, and drove his dagger into the limb.

The blade sank in—

—and stopped.

The surface hardened instantly, locking the steel in place.

"Shit."

The monster yanked its arm back.

Ethan let go, twisting away just as the limb slammed into the cavern wall, pulverizing stone.

He rolled, came up, already moving.

Don't get grabbed. Don't get cornered.

He drew his second knife and hurled it.

The blade struck the slit in its mask.

For half a heartbeat, the monster reacted.

The slit flared brighter.

The cavern shook.

"Got you," Ethan said through clenched teeth.

The monster roared.

Not sound — force.

The shockwave flung Ethan backward. He crashed into a pillar, breath tearing out of him as pain exploded across his ribs.

He slid down, gasping.

The monster advanced, steps heavy now, each one cracking stone.

Ethan forced himself upright, vision swimming.

Too strong head-on.

His eyes flicked to the river.

To the pillars.

To the glowing crystal veins.

"Think," he muttered. "Think."

The monster lunged.

Ethan bolted sideways, leaping onto the nearest stone pillar. The creature followed, smashing straight through the base instead of going around it.

The pillar collapsed.

Ethan jumped again, barely catching the next one, fingers screaming as weight pulled at his shoulders.

The monster slammed into the water, sending waves crashing outward.

The crystal veins along the walls pulsed brighter.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"It's feeding," he realized. "From the floor."

The monster rose again, larger now, its limbs thicker, surface more solid.

The Dungeon wasn't just watching.

It was helping.

Ethan dropped back to the shore, breath ragged, legs burning.

"Alright," he said quietly. "No more freebies."

He ran straight toward the monster.

It swung.

He ducked.

Stone shattered behind him.

He slid under its torso, slashing upward — not at the body, but at the glowing veins running through it.

The blade bit.

Light flared violently.

The monster screamed again, this time with sound — a grinding, tearing noise like rock being crushed underwater.

It stumbled.

Ethan didn't stop.

He climbed it.

Boots digging into hardened water, hands finding holds where the crystal veins ran brightest. Every touch burned his skin, but he forced himself higher.

"Stay," he growled, driving his dagger down again.

The crystal vein shattered.

The monster convulsed.

The river surged, waves crashing against the shore, but the glow dimmed instead of brightening.

The Dungeon didn't like that.

The cavern shook harder now. Cracks spread along the walls, chunks of stone raining down.

The monster twisted violently, throwing Ethan free.

He hit the ground hard, rolled, and barely avoided being crushed as one of the stone pillars collapsed entirely.

The creature staggered back into the river, form destabilizing, surface rippling wildly.

It wasn't dead.

But it was hurt.

Ethan pushed himself up, chest heaving, blood running down his arm from a gash he hadn't felt yet.

"Yeah," he panted. "You bleed too."

The monster retreated deeper into the river, melting back into shadow and water, the slit in its mask never leaving him.

The vibration faded.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

Then — silence.

The river flowed normally again.

The crystals dimmed.

Ethan stood there for a long moment, blade still raised, waiting.

Nothing came.

He let his arm drop.

His knees gave out.

He sat hard on the stone, laughing once — short, shaky, almost hysterical.

"Still alive," he whispered. "Still moving."

He looked at the river again.

The footprints were gone.

Whatever other human had been here… they'd either crossed, or been taken.

Ethan wiped blood from his face and forced himself up.

"This floor's not done with me," he said quietly. "And I'm not done with it."

He turned away from the river and followed the only remaining path forward — a narrow passage carved straight into the stone, sloping upward.

Toward the next floor.

Toward whatever was waiting.

And behind him, deep beneath the water, something watched him go.
