The infuriating sound is the first thing that pulls me out of darkness. And as the disorientation clears, I foolishly think it's a bird.
But the painfully robotic tone repeats itself. The same dull note every second, and on hearing it properly now, something deep in my chest goes cold. Because I know that sound, I know it so well that my body reacts before my brain does; my stomach drops, and my skin starts prickling all over.
...That's not a bird. It's a heart monitor!!
A heart monitor in BeastHeaven? That...That's impossible. There are no heart monitors in BeastHeaven! There's no electricity, and certainly no fluorescent lights buzzing like angry wasps just behind my eyelids...
The beeping intensifies as my heart starts pounding. I try to open my eyes, to see where I am, but nothing happens.
