Chapter 96 - Chapter 96 – The First Modern Dragonrider, Birth of the Goddess of War!

With water and food in short supply and their lives hanging by a thread, beauties who drained stamina and jewels that couldn't be eaten were utterly useless. Thus, the queen's decision won the unanimous support of everyone.

Dany looked to her khal. Drogo, though weak, nodded in approval of her decision.

Refusing women and riches, asking only for food and water—the Ghis officer felt like he'd struck gold. The request was unbelievably cheap. He nearly agreed on the spot but, lacking the authority, he hurried back into the city to report to the governor.

Dany remained calm and composed. She believed that unless the governor of New Ghis was an utter fool, he'd agree immediately and provide the requested supplies.

But more than an hour passed, and the officer who had gone to deliver the message never returned.

Then, after another ten minutes, the heavy city gates reopened. A column of soldiers poured out—but they weren't pushing carts laden with food and water. They came empty-handed.

At first, Dany thought they were coming to explain, but the soldiers' actions quickly dashed her hopes.

They rushed to carry the crates of jewels back into the city and then slammed the gates shut, leaving the bevy of uneasy beauties standing on the beach, awaiting whatever fate awaited them.

Soon after, soldiers armed with bows, swords, and spears swarmed onto the city walls, arranging themselves into tight defensive formations.

The governor of New Ghis had made his stance unmistakably clear. Drogo, enraged, turned as cold as winter.

"Every spawn of the harpy, no matter where they dwell, deserves to die! Those Ghis fools must've seen our exhaustion and illness and decided to abandon any thoughts of peace!"

Still cursing, he turned to Dany with an icy voice: "You know what needs to be done."

Dany nodded, her beautiful face turning solemn.

Before she could speak, Grey Worm, commander of the Unsullied and the one who most despised the Ghis, stepped forward with murderous intent.

"Your Majesty, my Queen, allow me to lead the Unsullied to storm New Ghis and slaughter every last son of the harpy!"

Thud, thud, thud!

The eunuchs raised their spears and pounded them on the deck, declaring their fiery determination to fight.

The Unsullied's loyalty had always earned Drogo's trust. Without hesitation, he agreed, "Very well!"

Given permission, the commander—eager to shed blood for his king—clutched his chest and cast a deep look at the stoic Missandei before turning away, ready to shout the order to attack.

But Dany cut him off.

"Grey Worm, after nearly half a year of hardship at sea, the brave Unsullied are exhausted. This time, I want you to stay back and watch. My children will strike fear into the hearts of the Ghis in your stead."

As she spoke, Dany raised her head toward the three circling dragons above.

Dragons recover far quicker than humans. Even the white dragon Viserion, whose wing bones had been shattered by Naga, had fully healed in less than a week.

The incredible combat prowess of her three children had been proven in their battle against Naga. Though not yet fully grown and no larger than a horse, they had brought no shame to the legendary fury of dragons.

Dragons could fly and maneuver freely, breathe deadly fire, and obliterate troops and structures alike. Their scales were tougher than any metal—ordinary swords, spears, and arrows were useless against them.

One dragon could destroy an army, burn down a castle, even topple a kingdom.

Slaying a dragon was no simple feat.

Unless they encountered Qyburn's infamous invention—the "Scorpion"—a giant crossbow built in King's Landing, dragons were practically invincible in the realms of men.

Drogo said nothing in response to Dany's strategic plan—he simply nodded in approval.

Dany raised her voice and called out, "Drogon, come down!"

The black dragon, obedient to its mother, immediately changed course. Its massive wings blotted out the sun as it descended. Its scales were jet black, with blood-red eyes, horns, and dorsal spines. The largest of the three, Drogon had grown especially strong from its time in the wild.

As the enormous shadow settled over them, Drogon landed before her, wings folding. Dany gently stroked its snout and said something that nearly made Drogo's soul leave his body.

"Drogon, ever since Balerion the Black Dread died, no true dragonrider has appeared in this world. But today, I—Daenerys Stormborn, of House Targaryen, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Queen of Slaver's Bay, Princess of Dragonstone, the Unburnt, Mhysa of the Free Folk, and Mother of Dragons—will revive that history and become the first modern dragonrider!"

Without hesitating, Dany climbed onto Drogon's back, her hands gripping the spines along his neck.

Her action stunned everyone—especially Drogo, who had experienced the perils of aerial combat firsthand.

Weak and anxious, Drogo tried to dissuade her. "My moon, you can't do this! Drogon is still too small. If he tires, you'll fall from the sky!"

Dany smiled softly at him but said nothing.

Drogo tried to pull her down, but the wind from Drogon's wings was too powerful—he couldn't get close.

Drogon, uncomfortable with someone on his back for the first time—even if it was his mother—snorted smoke and shook violently, trying to throw her off.

But Dany had rehearsed this moment countless times in her mind. She pressed herself tightly against Drogon's back and refused to let go.

She felt the mighty muscles beneath her shift and ripple. The dragon was immensely powerful.

Gradually, Drogon seemed to accept her presence and stopped resisting.

With her child calm, Dany whispered gently, "My child, just like always—spread your wings and take me flying."

Screech!

Drogon roared in protest but then flapped his massive wings and rose into the air.

Dany could feel the heat of Drogon's back through her clothes. Her heart pounded—she was overwhelmed with tension and excitement.

This was the moment she had dreamed of. Her breathing quickened. As the massive wings beat like thunder, the ships and sandy shore below grew smaller. Drogo and Romman became no more than black specks.

Dizzy, Dany closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she saw the Ghis below pulling back their bowstrings to shoot her down.

She slapped Drogon's neck and shouted, "Dracarys!"

Whooom!

A torrent of black-and-red flame surged downward, engulfing and incinerating the sons of the harpy who dared to fire upon her.

Until now, the Mother of Dragons had always been seen as a delicate princess.

But from this day forward, the world would change that perception—she would be hailed as the supreme Goddess of War.
