After the invasion ended, Nick Fury arrived in New York with a small army of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and helicopters. The streets around Stark Tower looked like a war movie set, but the war was over.
Smoke rose from broken buildings. Alien bodies and pieces of metal covered the ground. The giant mountain of crushed Chitauri reached higher than the tower itself. Fury stood with his hands behind his back and looked at the destruction.
He felt something close to pride.
His Avengers idea had worked. Six people (seven if he counted the green monster who sometimes listened) had stopped an alien army that would have destroyed the planet. The world leaders had wanted to drop a nuclear bomb on New York. Fury had fought them tooth and nail and told them that they did not need it, and now he had proof he was right.
His Avengers plan had come to fruitation and had just saved Earth from a fucking alien invasion.
'This would help me get more support for my initiative. The security council would finally recognise the threat. They would now understand that we are not alone in this universe.' Fury thought.
He then looked at the scattered weapons of the chitauri, their energy blasters hoverboards and thought, 'And they would recognise that our technology is far behind theirs. And some of those like those large snake things could destroy most of our tanks and jets. That's why we need the Avengers. People with powers that could make most technology look useless.'
He thought about what he had seen on the camera feeds.
Hulk and Abomination had torn the giant leviathans apart like they were made of paper. Tony Stark's suit had flown through the sky firing hundreds of missiles, turning whole squadrons of Chitauri into fireworks. Creel had walked through energy blasts with metal skin and crushed aliens with his bare hands. Captain America's shield had bounced between enemies like a silver pinball of death. Thor had called real lightning from the sky as he fried chitauri.
And then there was Kakashi Hatake.
Fury's one good eye narrowed when he remembered the footage.
First, the man had made twenty perfect copies of himself that ran through the city and carried thousands of civilians to safety. Then a blue energy giant taller than any building had appeared. That giant had cut leviathans in half with one swing. It had thrown shuriken that erased enemies from existence. One sword slash had sliced an entire office building cleanly in two. The top half had slid off like butter.
Then came the lightning storm. Thousands of lightning spears had fallen from the sky at the same time. Fury had watched Thor's face on another camera. The god of thunder had looked jealous. Fury had almost laughed. He had thought to himself, "I'm not sure who the real thunder god is anymore. Thor might need to hand over the title."
Finally, Kakashi had created a black orb that pulled every single Chitauri into a giant crushing ball. The aliens had been squashed together until they formed the mountain of dead bodies that now stood in front of Stark Tower.
Fury shook his head slowly. He was very glad Kakashi was on his side. His paranoid brain had sometimes wondered about making plans against the man. Now he knew those plans would be useless. Trying to contain Kakashi Hatake would be like trying to contain a natural disaster.
'You do not fight a hurricane. You just hope it likes you.' Ht thought
He also felt relief about something else. The World Security Council had been ready to nuke New York. They had seen the invasion as unsolvable. If they had watched Kakashi's complete Susanoo tank everything the Chitauri threw at it, they would have realised even their biggest bomb might not work. That blue armour could probably survive a nuclear blast. The council members were idiots, but even idiots could learn when they saw something that scared them.
Fury looked at his agents moving through the wreckage. They were collecting every piece of Chitauri technology they could find. Energy rifles, hover chariots, pieces of leviathan armour, everything. He had ordered a complete lockdown of the area. He did not want Russia, China, or random terrorists getting their hands on alien weapons. That would create new problems he did not need.
Some pieces would still disappear. Black market dealers were fast. But Fury had already placed undercover teams to watch for anything suspicious in the city for the next year.
He felt satisfied when he thought about casualties. Almost zero human deaths. Property damage was huge, but property could be rebuilt. Besides considering the damage that a nuclear bomb would have done, the damage was negligible. The Avengers had saved the day.
A security council meeting was coming soon. For once, Fury was actually looking forward to it. He would walk in, play the footage of Kakashi's blue giant, the Avengerss fighting the aliens and the mountain of dead aliens, and watch the council members turn pale. Maybe then they would finally fund the Avengers properly.
He had one more problem. The Tesseract was secure again, locked in a special case. They needed a new place to hide it, somewhere safer than before.
Fury rubbed his temple and sighed.
"That slippery snake Loki escaped again. And now he has a magic amplifier that can mind-control people. I hope he left Earth. I am really not in the mood to chase him or deal with him again."
He paused and thought about the council meeting again.
"When they ask who started this, I will just say 'an alien did it'. If I mention mind control scepters and magic is real, the meeting will last a week and I will need therapy. Better to keep it simple."
Fury looked one last time at the mountain of dead Chitauri and the half-cut buildings. He allowed himself one small, proud smile.
The Avengers had worked.
Earth was safe.
And Nick Fury finally had the proof he needed to make the world listen.
