Chapter 112: Hard Goodbyes

Niels arrived early as the preseason was already underway. Thomas had the players working hard through fitness drills, and there was plenty of energy on the pitch. But Niels knew today could bring some important answers about the team.
A soft knock came at his office door.
Niels looked up from the window. Max stood in the doorway. He looked tired, with dark eyes and a worn-out face, as if he hadn't slept much.
The captain's shoulders were low, and he seemed to have something weighing on him.
Niels pointed to the chair.
Max sat down while the usual mess of the office surrounded them: old match programs, a chipped mug, and a fading photo from the FA Cup run.
"Max," Niels said, keeping his voice calm. "What's going on?"
Max sat down, his hands moving nervously as he stared at the floor.
