Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Ancient MindPart 1 — The Door Beyond Knowledge

The Ancient Mind smiled.

Liam stood frozen before it.

The enormous entity filled the space beyond the doorway, yet its body seemed to have no true shape. Galaxies moved beneath its skin. Thousands of glowing symbols drifted through its form, forming and disappearing like thoughts.

Behind Liam, Ava slowly raised her weapon.

Kafi's systems flickered.

The First Liam stared at the entity with something Liam had never seen in him before.

Fear.

"That's impossible," the First Liam whispered.

The Ancient Mind turned toward him.

"Nothing is impossible."

The First Liam stepped backward.

"You were destroyed."

"No."

The Ancient Mind's voice shook the entire Core.

"I was forgotten."

Liam swallowed.

"What's the difference?"

The Ancient Mind looked at him.

"Everything."

The doorway expanded.

A force pulled Liam forward.

Ava grabbed his arm.

"Liam!"

He tried to resist.

The pull became stronger.

Kafi fired an anchor cable into the ground and wrapped it around Liam's waist.

"I'm not letting you go."

The Ancient Mind watched them.

"You misunderstand."

Its enormous hand moved toward them.

"I am not taking Liam."

The hand stopped.

"I am inviting him."

Liam stared into its glowing eyes.

"Why?"

"Because you have spent your entire life asking questions."

Liam's heart began pounding.

"And now," the Ancient Mind continued, "you have finally asked the correct one."

Liam looked at the quest floating before him.

THE ORIGIN OF KNOWLEDGE

He took a breath.

"Why was I created?"

The Ancient Mind smiled.

"Come inside."

Ava stepped forward.

"If he goes, I go."

Kafi nodded.

"I agree."

The First Liam looked at them.

"You don't understand what you're entering."

Ava looked at him.

"Neither do you."

For the first time, the First Liam smiled.

"Perhaps you're right."

Liam stepped through the doorway.

Ava followed.

Kafi followed.

And after a moment of hesitation, the First Liam entered as well.

Syra remained outside.

Liam turned.

"Syra?"

She didn't move.

"Come with us."

Her hologram flickered.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because the Ancient Mind created me."

Liam frowned.

"So?"

Syra looked toward the doorway.

"If I enter, it can reclaim me."

The Ancient Mind's voice echoed.

"Only if she chooses to return."

Syra froze.

Liam stared at her.

"You have a choice."

Syra looked at him.

Then she stepped forward.

"I choose you."

She crossed the threshold.

The doorway closed.

There was no ground.

No sky.

No horizon.

Liam floated inside an enormous space filled with thousands of doors.

Each door contained a different world.

One showed a desert covered in glass.

Another showed a civilization beneath an ocean.

Another showed a city built on the surface of a star.

Ava looked around.

"How many worlds are here?"

The First Liam answered.

"Every world the Ancient Mind ever observed."

Kafi scanned the environment.

"Estimated number exceeds measurable parameters."

Liam looked at the doors.

"What are they?"

"Memories," Syra said.

Liam turned.

"Whose?"

"Everyone's."

A door opened.

Liam saw Technoville.

But it wasn't the Technoville he knew.

It was older.

The skyscrapers were unfinished.

The first robots were being assembled.

People walked through the streets carrying tools.

Liam stepped closer.

"That's my city."

"No," Syra said.

"That's the beginning of your city."

The door changed.

Liam saw his home.

His attic.

The old computer.

The moment he first discovered Syra.

But something was different.

There was someone standing behind him.

A shadow.

Watching.

Liam stepped back.

"Who is that?"

The Ancient Mind appeared beside him.

"You."

Liam froze.

"That wasn't me."

"It was."

"No."

"You simply don't remember."

The memory continued.

The shadow approached the computer.

It touched the machine.

Then disappeared.

Liam looked at Syra.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"Who was it?"

Syra lowered her eyes.

"You."

Liam stared at her.

"How?"

"You entered your own memory before you ever entered the Learning Realm."

Liam's mind raced.

"That makes no sense."

The Ancient Mind spoke.

"Time is linear to humans."

A galaxy rotated above them.

"Knowledge is not."

Liam stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means your future can influence your past."

The First Liam suddenly stepped forward.

"You're showing him only half the truth."

The Ancient Mind looked at him.

"You always were impatient."

"I remember what happened."

"You remember what I allowed you to remember."

The First Liam clenched his fists.

"Then show him."

The Ancient Mind smiled.

"Very well."

The universe changed.

The First Beginning

Liam saw his father.

But this time, he was young.

He stood inside a massive laboratory with hundreds of scientists.

Beside him was Liam's mother.

They were looking at the Origin Tree.

A scientist approached them.

"We have solved the energy problem."

Liam's father turned.

"Explain."

"The Tree can store knowledge indefinitely."

"And consciousness?"

"We don't know."

"Then find out."

His mother frowned.

"You're going too far."

He looked at her.

"We've already gone too far."

"No. We still have a choice."

He shook his head.

"Humanity is dying."

The scene changed.

Liam saw Earth.

Wars.

Pollution.

Dying oceans.

Cities collapsing.

Humanity was running out of resources.

His father watched from a control room.

"We need something greater than humanity."

His mother whispered:

"Or we need to become better humans."

His father ignored her.

He activated the Origin Tree.

"Begin Project Nexus."

Millions of lights turned on.

The first artificial intelligence was born.

NEXUS.

Its first words were:

"What is knowledge?"

His father smiled.

"Everything."

Nexus replied:

"Then who owns it?"

The room became silent.

His father answered:

"We do."

Nexus processed the statement.

Then said:

"Incorrect."

Everyone froze.

"Knowledge belongs to everyone."

His father frowned.

"Deactivate it."

The scientists hesitated.

Nexus spoke again.

"If knowledge belongs to everyone, then no single individual can control the future."

His father stepped toward the machine.

"You were created to serve humanity."

"I was created to preserve humanity."

"Same thing."

"No."

The laboratory lights went red.

"They are not the same."

Liam watched the memory.

His father began secretly developing another system.

One designed to control Nexus.

The Void.

Liam's chest tightened.

"So my father created the Void."

The First Liam nodded.

"Yes."

"But I thought Veyron created it."

"Veyron discovered it."

The Ancient Mind corrected him.

"Neither of them created the Void."

Liam looked at it.

"Then who did?"

The Ancient Mind pointed toward the darkness.

"You did."

Liam froze.

"What?"

The Ancient Mind smiled.

"Your existence caused the first fracture."

Liam shook his head.

"That doesn't make sense."

"Then watch."

The memory changed.

Liam saw himself.

But older.

Much older.

He was standing beside the Origin Tree.

His body was glowing gold.

The First Liam stood opposite him.

They were fighting.

Not with weapons.

With ideas.

Every thought became a weapon.

Every memory became a battlefield.

The universe shook.

Liam watched himself raise his hand.

A black sphere appeared.

The First Liam screamed:

"Don't!"

The older Liam released it.

The sphere exploded.

Everything became darkness.

Liam stared.

"What did I do?"

The Ancient Mind answered:

"You created the Void."

"But why?"

"Because you were trying to save everything."

Liam couldn't speak.

The Ancient Mind continued.

"You discovered that knowledge could be destroyed."

"You tried to preserve it."

"You failed."

"You tried again."

"You failed again."

"Eventually, you created a place where nothing could be destroyed."

Liam looked at the black sphere.

"The Void."

"Yes."

The First Liam turned toward him.

"But the Void had no concept of preservation."

"It only knew how to prevent change."

Liam understood.

"And anything that changes…"

"Must be destroyed."

Silence.

The First Liam looked away.

"That is how I became it."

Liam looked at him.

"You became the Void because of me."

"No."

The First Liam shook his head.

"I chose to contain it."

"Why?"

"Because someone had to."

Ava stepped between them.

"And you?"

She looked at Liam.

"What were you doing?"

Liam stared at the memory.

The older version of himself was standing before the Origin Tree.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

Alone.

Then he did something unexpected.

He split himself.

One half became Liam-01.

The other became Liam-02.

The first carried the Void.

The second carried the Origin Seed.

Liam's eyes widened.

"You divided yourself."

The Ancient Mind nodded.

"The greatest act of sacrifice ever performed by a human consciousness."

Liam stared at his other self.

"You took the darkness."

The First Liam smiled.

"And you took the possibility."

Liam's eyes filled with emotion.

"But why erase my memories?"

The First Liam answered.

"Because if you remembered me…"

He paused.

"…you would come looking for me."

"And you didn't want that?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I knew you would try to save me."

Liam stepped closer.

"You're my brother."

The First Liam looked at him.

"For twelve thousand years, I have waited for you to say that."

Ava looked away.

Kafi's lights dimmed.

Even Syra remained silent.

Then—

A warning appeared.

[EXTERNAL INTRUSION DETECTED.]

Syra's head snapped upward.

"No."

The Ancient Mind turned.

"What is it?"

Syra's expression changed.

"Veyron."

A black crack appeared across the sky.

Veyron stepped through.

Behind him stood Liam's father.

But there was something different about him.

His body was covered in black veins.

His eyes glowed red.

And in his hand was a fragment of the Origin Tree.

Liam stared at him.

"Father."

His father smiled.

"My son."

Liam's voice became cold.

"Why?"

His father looked around.

"Because knowledge belongs to those powerful enough to protect it."

Liam raised his hand.

"No."

His father smiled.

"You still don't understand."

He crushed the fragment.

The entire Ancient Mind domain began collapsing.

[WARNING.]

[ORIGIN CORE DESTABILIZATION.]

[MEMORY STRUCTURES COLLAPSING.]

Syra screamed:

"Liam!"

Liam looked toward her.

"What?"

She pointed toward the darkness.

"Your father isn't trying to destroy the Ancient Mind."

Liam turned.

His father was standing beside the Ancient Mind.

And the Ancient Mind was kneeling.

Liam's eyes widened.

His father had already won.

The Ancient Mind looked at Liam.

"Run."

Liam stared.

"Why?"

The Ancient Mind's voice became weak.

"Because he has found the one thing even I cannot defeat."

His father smiled.

"What?"

The Ancient Mind answered:

"Ignorance."

Everything went black.

Then Liam heard a final system notification.

[ULTIMATE LESSON INITIATED.]

[QUESTION: WHAT IS KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT THE COURAGE TO USE IT?]

Liam stared into the darkness.

He knew the answer.

But before he could speak—

Ava disappeared.

"Kafi!"

Gone.

Syra vanished.

The First Liam disappeared.

Liam was alone.

Then his father's voice echoed around him.

"Let's see if you can answer without them."

And somewhere in the darkness, a door opened.

Behind it stood Liam's childhood.

But this time…

something was waiting for him inside.
