Chapter 817 - Chapter 609.1

The Crystal Goblet Tavern is carved into a massive natural geode.

The walls are raw, translucent quartz—veined with gold and silver, where the warm amber light of internal steam lamps mingles with the green glow rising from the Chasm far below. The bar and tables are cut from the same crystal, their surfaces polished to a mirror shine. Warmth and humidity steep the air in sake, roasted meat, and a faint breath of flowers.

The tavern is crowded.

Merchants and mercenaries, smugglers and scholars—they huddle over tables, their voices low, their conversations punctuated by the clink of glasses and the occasional burst of laughter. The culture of anonymity here is not absolute—it is a choice, a tool, a weapon to be wielded when necessary.

Marya, Jannali, Eliane, Aurélie, Luffy, Law, Shanks, and Beckman file through the entrance.

They pause, scanning the room for a table that can accommodate their group.

The tavern falls silent.

Auset Kryptos—standing behind the bar, a crystal glass in one hand, a polishing cloth in the other—freezes.

She sees them.

She sees the Heart Pirates insignia on Marya's jacket. She sees the silver hair and cold eyes of Aurélie Nakano Takeko. She sees the straw hat and impossible grin of Monkey D. Luffy. She sees the red hair and scared eye of Shanks.

The Red Hair Emperor.

The Pirate King.

The Silent Swarm.

The Mist Wielder.

Her mind races. Her telepathic senses—always active, always overwhelming—brush against their surface thoughts, and she flinches at the intensity of what she finds.

She rushes to a booth closest to the bar.

"Shoo! Shoo! Get out! Now!"

The current occupants—a group of merchants—protest. They grumble, they complain, they reach for their drinks—

Then they see who is standing in the doorway.

They scurry out of the booth like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Marya announces, a thread of dry amusement winding through her voice.

"Oh look. A table just became available."

Law smirks. "That's convenient."

Eliane beams. "Isn't it!"

She bounces to the front of the group, her silver ponytail swinging, her blue eyes bright with excitement. She leads them to the booth, sliding in first, her small frame disappearing behind the crystal table.

The patrons watch in silence.

Murmurs ripple through the crowd—shock, awe, fear. The hush of people who have just realized they are in the presence of legends.

Auset Kryptos gestures, her voice warm with practiced welcome, while fear keeps its quiet vigil beneath every word.

"Welcome. Please, come and sit."

Luffy beams. "Aww! This is great!"

He slides into the booth, his eyes already scanning the tavern for food.

"I will have the one of everything."

Jannali curses. "Bloody hell. We are strapped for cash!"

Shanks laughs—a warm, genuine sound that echoes through the tavern.

Marya glances at Auset Kryptos. The tavern keeper nods—a small, knowing gesture.

"Of course."

Marya sits at the end of the booth, her back to the wall, her golden-ringed eyes scanning the room. Her voice settles over the table with the sure pull of a tide the crew knows better than to resist.

"Don't get too comfortable. I don't expect we will be here for very long."

Luffy asks, his brow furrowing. "How come?"

Auset Kryptos returns.

She carries a tray laden with sake and wine—amber light pooling in the crystal decanters, cups carved from volcanic glass. She sets them down with practiced grace, her movements fluid, her expression carefully neutral.

She whispers as she pours.

"You are here for the auction."

Shanks' hand pauses—halfway to the sake, frozen in mid-air.

Jannali replies, her voice low. "Yeah, love. What do you know?"

Luffy asks, his head tilting. "How did you even know that?"

Eliane giggles.

Law groans, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Auset Kryptos continues, her voice barely above a whisper. She fills the cups, her eyes darting toward the door, toward the shadows, toward the places where secrets hide.

"You are correct." She pauses. "Rosward Don J. Puth is here."

A beat.

"But so is—"

She looks over her shoulder.

A figure stands in the shadows near the back of the tavern. Tall. Thin. Spectacles glinting in the amber light. A suit—immaculate, dark, out of place in this den of thieves and cutthroats.

Auset Kryptos stands. She backs away from the table, her tray clutched to her chest like a shield. When Kuro approaches, clearing his throat, announcing himself.

Kuro steps forward.

He adjusts his glasses with his palm, a slow, deliberate gesture—and his voice cuts through the tavern's murmur like a blade.

"Ms. Nakano."

Aurélie narrows her eyes. Her hand drifts toward Anathema's hilt. "Kuro."

Luffy's head snaps around. His eyes bulge. His mouth opens.

"KURO!"

The tavern falls silent.

A spoon clatters to the floor.

Kuro clears his throat. His expression remains unreadable—calm and measured, polished by years spent threading the narrow spaces between power and peril.

"Ms. Nakano. I assume Ember is well."

Aurélie tilts her head. Old battles draw her voice taut, each word held at the edge of steel.

"Your inquiry is a surprise." A pause. "She is." Another pause. "I see you were able to find your way out of G-88."

Kuro raises a brow. "Of course."

Shanks interrupts. His voice rolls across the table with the quiet force of a red tide, leaving no room for protest.

"Something you need?"

Kuro looks at Shanks. His eyes—cold, calculating—land on Marya.

"You have been summoned."

Marya places her wine glass down. The crystal chimes against the table.

"Do they have my payment?"

Everyone's head snaps around.

Except Jannali.

She asks, wariness threading her voice, honed by a world that has taught her to leave nothing unquestioned.

"Are you sure, mate?"

Marya looks at her. She nods.

"Yes."

Eliane looks at Jannali. She notices the tension in her posture—the way her shoulders have drawn up, the way her hands have clenched into fists beneath the table.

"What is it?"

Kuro nods. "Then come."

Marya stands from the booth. She gestures to Eliane.

"Eliane."

Shanks smirks. "This sounds interesting."

Marya looks at him. "You don't need to—"

Shanks tells her as he stands, "Tagging along with you is more interesting than sitting here."

Marya groans. "Fine."

Luffy protests, his voice flaring with the wounded fury of an empty stomach promised a feast.

"But I haven't even gotten anything to eat!"

Law glances over his shoulder as they follow Kuro. His voice is dry with the resignation Luffy leaves in his wake, every attempt at control long since surrendered to the tide.

"Fine. Then stay. We will find Uta without you."

Luffy considers.

His eyes scan the trays of food coming out of the kitchen—the sizzling meat, the steaming vegetables, the glistening sauces.

He stretches his arm.

Snatch.

He grabs a leg of meat—a massive thing, dripping with juices—and rushes to catch up with the group.

"Wait for me!"

---

Kuro leads them through the winding streets of Caldera City.

The terraces rise around them, each level more precarious than the last. Buildings cling to the volcanic rock like barnacles, their foundations anchored with heavy iron tie-rods. Steam whistles shriek from foundries below. The distant rumble of the volcano—a constant, grinding presence—vibrates through the stone beneath their feet.

They cross a rope bridge.

It sways with each step, the hemp creaking, the ironwood planks groaning. Below, the Chasm yawns—a dark, hungry mouth that swallows the light.

Eliane clutches the rope railing, her knuckles white.

"Don't look down," Jannali advises, her voice level as a horizon that has weathered far darker crossings.

Luffy—still gnawing on his leg of meat—looks down.

"Whoa! That's a long way!"

Law grabs the back of his vest, pulling him away from the edge.

"Walk, Straw Hat."

They continue.

The streets grow narrower. The buildings grow taller. The people they pass wear their fortunes openly—gems at their throats, precious metals at their wrists, each gleam a quiet declaration of rank.

Status, Marya thinks. The gleam of one's adornments. The weight of one's Ash Coin purse.

They stop before a massive set of iron doors.

The doors are carved with symbols—a heptagon, each side bearing a different vice. Greed's gilded leer. Wrath's cracked snarl. Pride's mirrored sheen. Sloth's weeping visage. Envy's serpent curve. Gluttony's hollow maw. Lust's painted smile.

Kuro turns to face them.

His voice darkens, each word laid between them like a threshold edged in iron.

"The Septenary awaits. You will be granted an audience with the Masquerade. You will not speak unless spoken to. You will not reveal your identities. You will not—"

Shanks interrupts. His voice crosses the threshold like a tide that has never bent to walls, titles, or ceremony.

"We know the rules."

Kuro's jaw tightens. But he nods.

He pushes open the doors.

---

The Septenary hangs over the abyss.

The chamber is heptagonal—seven walls, seven pillars, seven thrones arranged in a circle around an open central grate. Through the grate, the Chasm yawns—a depth without end, where every glimmer falls away and silence rises in its place.

The seven thrones are occupied.

Seven figures. Seven masks. Seven vices.

They sit in shadow, their forms obscured by heavy draperies and sulfurous incense. The air is thick with the smell of burning herbs—cloying, sweet, almost overwhelming.

Marya steps forward.

Her boots click against the obsidian floor. Her golden-ringed eyes sweep across the masked figures, cataloging, calculating.

She does not bow.

She does not speak.

She waits.

The silence stretches.

Then—

A voice. Low. Measured. Coming from the throne on the far side of the circle—the one whose mask bears Greed's gilded leer.

"Marya Zaleska. Daughter of Dracule Mihawk. Bearer of Nisshoku. Mist Wielder."

A pause.
