Chapter 32 - THE TERRITORY BELOW

The Sealed Ones territory was not on any map the Eternal Courts made available to its members.

This was not an oversight. The Sealed Ones had been part of the hidden civilization since before the four factions organized themselves into their current configurations and their territory had never been formally mapped because the Sealed Ones had never formally agreed to be mapped and the three times in the civilization's history that a faction had attempted to map their territory without agreement the maps had come back empty. Not blank. Empty. The cartographers had returned with clear memories of traveling through significant territory and documents that contained nothing. Whatever had prevented the mapping from recording had not been hostile. It had been thorough.

The woman with the dark robes and the adjusted eyes met him at the boundary of what the Eternal Courts maps showed as uncharted territory and led him in without speaking.

He had brought Liàng.

The woman had looked at Liàng for one measured second when she arrived beside him at the boundary and then had looked at the hollow stone Liàng carried and her expression had shifted in the specific way expressions shifted when someone encountered something they recognized from a context that had not prepared them to encounter it here.

She had said nothing about it.

She had led them both in.

The Sealed Ones territory did not look like the rest of the hidden civilization.

The rest of the hidden civilization had been built. Compound walls and structured pathways and the organized intentionality of factions that had been maintaining their spaces for centuries. The Sealed Ones territory had not been built. It had been inhabited. The difference was visible in the specific quality of a space that had been lived in rather than constructed, paths that existed because people walked them rather than because someone laid them, structures that had grown from their foundations rather than been placed on them.

The luminescence here was different too. Deeper in color. More concentrated. The old stone had been accumulating cultivation history for longer here than anywhere else in the hidden civilization because the Sealed Ones had been here longer than anyone else and their knowledge ran in ways that left more in the ground rather than less.

Liàng was writing.

She had been writing since they crossed the boundary. Her brush moving across her scroll with the specific speed of someone trying to record faster than things were happening and finding the things consistently ahead of the recording.

He walked through the Sealed Ones territory and let the Hollow Soul Lineage respond to it without management.

It responded immediately. Not in the way it responded to the tournament field or the Void Crawler or the clan tree. Those responses had been recognition, the lineage identifying something in its environment that corresponded to something it carried. This response was different. This was the lineage responding to something that was the same type of thing it was. The specific resonance of one deep thing encountering another deep thing that operates according to the same fundamental logic.

He was walking through territory that the Hollow Soul Lineage recognized as home.

Not his home. Its home. The lineage's home. The place where what he carried had come from in a form that predated him by a margin that made the civilization's history look recent.

He pressed this observation into the peripheral spaces and kept walking.

The woman led them deeper.

The structures became older as they went. The paths narrower. The luminescence more concentrated until the light had the specific quality of the Still Chamber in The Hollow Between, the deep concentrated glow of something that had been accumulating for long enough to have become its own source rather than a reflection of something else.

Other Sealed Ones were present. He was aware of them the way he was aware of most things, without appearing to look. They watched from doorways and from the edges of paths with the particular quality of people who had been told someone was coming and had formed opinions about what that meant before the arrival. The opinions were not hostile. They were the specific careful quality of a community that had been self-contained for a very long time and was assessing whether what was arriving was something they had been waiting for or something they needed to be careful about.

Several of them looked at Liàng's hollow stone.

One of them, an elder woman sitting at the entrance to a structure that was older than the rest, looked at the stone and then looked at Liàng with an expression that was not quite recognition and not quite confirmation and lived in the territory between them where very old knowledge existed.

She did not speak.

Liàng did not speak.

The hollow stone, as it had done every day since before anyone knew Liàng's name, simply was.

They reached the deepest section as the hidden civilization's approximation of midday arrived.

The woman stopped at the edge of a space that was different from everything they had walked through. Not larger. Not more luminescent. Different in the specific way that spaces were different when they had been set aside for something rather than simply used. The careful quality of a room that has been waiting.

"Beyond here," the woman said, "you go alone."

He looked at the space beyond.

"Liàng," he said.

"I will be here," she said, without looking up from her scroll. She had said this before he asked it. She had known what he was going to say before he said it the way she knew most things, from the quality of the moment rather than from the words.

He stepped into the space.

It was not large. Perhaps thirty feet across. The floor was hollow stone polished smooth by something that was not human hands and not cultivation technique and had been working at it for longer than he wanted to calculate. The ceiling was low here, the concentrated luminescence closer, the light touching everything with the specific warmth of something that had been waiting long enough that warmth was the only reasonable response to arrival.

At the center of the space something turned toward him.

Not physically. It was rooted. It could not turn in the physical sense.

But something in it turned.

A plant. Ancient. The specific ancient of something that had been in this exact location for longer than the hidden civilization had existed above it. Its roots ran down through the polished stone floor and continued downward through the deeper layers toward The Hollow itself. Its surface was the color of hollow stone but warmer, the luminescence in it not reflected but generated, its own internal light that corresponded to nothing in the standard herb classification system because the standard herb classification system had not been built to account for something at this level.

He felt it before he understood what it was.

Not with the Hollow Soul Lineage. Not with the Tiān Emperor Vein.

With the thing in his chest that had no meridian correspondence and no cultivation basis and no name yet.

The thing that had been at a comma.

The comma ended.

The plant's awareness turned toward him with the complete unhurried quality of something that had been waiting for one specific person and had just confirmed that the specific person had arrived, and in the turning he felt the question that everyone who had come near it had felt and had never been able to articulate.

The First Question.

Not in language. In the territory before language where the Sealed Ones' oldest knowledge existed and where the Hollow Soul Lineage ran.

He felt it completely.

He knew the answer immediately.

Not because he had been told. Because the answer was something he had always been carrying and the question was simply the first time anything had asked him to look at it directly.

He stood in the space with the ancient plant's awareness turned fully toward him and the concentrated luminescence touching his face and the thing in his chest that had been at a comma moving again toward whatever it was moving toward and he gave the answer the only way the question could be answered.

Without words.

The plant's light changed.

Not dramatically. The specific small shift of something that has received the answer it has been holding a question for and is now deciding what to give in return.

Something moved in the deep stone beneath his feet.

Something that had been patient for a very long time and had just been given permission to stop being patient.

He did not know yet what it was.

He knew it was his.

From somewhere in the deeper territory of the Sealed Ones space, in a direction he had not yet been, in a room that he had not yet reached, something that had been sealed for sixteen years recognized the permission that had just been given and began, very quietly, to wake up.

[ PRIMORDIAL SOVEREIGN EMPEROR SYSTEM ]

[ Welcome to the Sealed Ones territory. ]

[ I have been waiting to say that for sixteen years. ]

[ There is someone here who has been waiting longer. ]

[ She knows you are here. ]

[ She has known since you crossed the boundary. ]

[ Take your time. ]

[ She will still be there. ]

[ She has always been there. ]
