Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

Trina's Playful Curiosity

The morning air was crisp, and the school smelled faintly of chalk dust and freshly polished floors. Sunlight streamed through the high windows, creating long golden slats that stretched across the hall. Trina's shoes tapped softly against the linoleum as she walked, her bag swinging carelessly at her side. Roomy followed a step behind, adjusting his backpack straps, while Alex stayed a few feet back, hands stuffed into his pockets, eyes constantly flicking toward the east wing garden.

Caleb was there again, leaning against the same stone wall, hoodie pulled low, silent, almost like a shadow that refused to move. He wasn't reading. He wasn't on his phone. He wasn't pretending to exist. He simply wascalm, observant, and unnervingly aware of everything around him.

Trina slowed, tilting her head with that mischievous curiosity she often wore when she wanted to test someone. You're always so… serious, she said, tossing her bag lightly onto the low wall. Ever think about smiling?

Caleb glanced up, a faint curve on his lips. I'm thinking. Quiet thinking.

Trina snorted, a small, musical sound that carried farther than she realized. Quiet thinking… huh? Sounds fancy. I think out loud all the time, so I guess that makes me a disaster thinker.

Alex's jaw tightened. He wanted to step forward and say something anything to stop this slow, creeping danger. But his fingers clenched tightly inside his pockets. Any move, any word, could tip Caleb off. And if Caleb knew, even a little…

Is he always this… quiet?Trina asked Roomy, oblivious to the tension curling around them like smoke.

Roomy shrugged, carefully neutral. Seems like it.

Alex's eyes never left Caleb. He noticed the way Caleb tilted his head, the subtle way his gaze flicked toward Trina, the tiniest smirk when Trina made a joke. Every gesture felt deliberate, precise, almost surgical. Alex swallowed.

Caleb finally spoke, low and calm, as if he could feel Alex's unease radiating off him. You notice things.

Trina raised an eyebrow. "I guess I do. Weird vibes. Like… right now."

Alex stiffened. That single sentence, innocent as it sounded, pricked at every nerve. He felt a coil of dread tighten in his chest. Caleb's eyes flicked toward him. No words were spoken, but the meaning was clear he knew Alex's secret.

Trina laughed again, a sound like bells ringing. You're weird, she said. I like it. Quiet, serious people are fun once you figure them out."

Caleb's smirk deepened faintly. Figure me out, huh?

Exactly, Trina said, tossing her hair over her shoulder. I like puzzles.

Alex felt his stomach twist. Puzzles. Secrets. Danger. Everything was wrapped in those words, and he hated that she was laughing, oblivious.

Roomy nudged Alex lightly. Hey, he doesn't seem so bad.

I know...Alex muttered, voice low, almost a growl. But there's more.

Trina turned to Caleb, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "sooo… do you like people? Or do you just sit in the shadows all day?

Caleb tilted his head again, thoughtfully. I like people quietly. Mostly, I watch. Some are worth noticing.

Trina grinned. "Well, then, lucky me. You noticed me."

Alex clenched his fists inside his pockets. Lucky her? Lucky Caleb? No. Nothing about this was luck.

Trina stepped closer, unaware of the danger, and Caleb's gaze followed her every movement. Alex wanted to intervene, but the memory of past mistakes of secrets nearly revealed made his feet feel like they were glued to the floor.

Roomy looked between them, sensing the invisible tension that wrapped the two boys. He couldn't see the full story, but he knew something was off. Something dangerous.

Caleb finally spoke again, quiet enough that only Alex could hear, though Trina laughed along with him, not understanding. "She's stubborn."

Alex felt his chest tighten. "That's… true," he muttered under his breath.

Trina tilted her head, glancing back at Alex, sensing nothing of the private exchange. "What?" she asked playfully.

"Nothing," Alex said, forcing a neutral tone. He watched her move, the way she laughed at small things, the way she swayed slightly as she walked. He wanted to reach out, to grab her hand, to warn her. But he couldn't. Caleb's presence was a razor at the edge of his control.

Caleb leaned slightly against the wall, calm, poised, unthreatened. "She notices everything," he said softly, eyes on Trina.

"Yes," Alex muttered, almost inaudibly. "Too much."

Trina giggled again, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet. "Okay, quiet mysterious guy, are you going to tell me anything fun, or are you just going to stare at me all day?"

Caleb smiled faintly. "Maybe I'll tell you something when the time is right."

Trina pouted playfully. "Oh, come on! Don't be so cryptic!"

Alex's teeth ground together. He could feel Roomy watching, waiting, sensing the storm just beneath the surface. Caleb's calm, collected presence, the subtle smirk, the faint teasing it all told him one thing.

If Trina ever learned even a fraction of what Caleb knew about him…

Alex's chest tightened again. The hallway felt smaller, the sunlight harsher, the shadows deeper.

And Trina? Still laughing, still unaware, still the brightest part of this fragile, dangerous balance.
