Chapter 100 - The things we don't see

The next morning arrived with rain clouds hanging over the ocean.

The hotel balcony overlooked the restless sea, waves crashing against the shoreline as if the water itself was angry. Usually, the view would have been beautiful.

Today, nobody paid attention to it.

Nobody mentioned what happened on the balcony the previous night either.

Not because they had forgotten.

Nobody could forget seeing Shristi standing barefoot on the railing, one wrong step away from falling.

They simply chose not to talk about it.

Sometimes silence was easier than fear.

---

Breakfast was quieter than usual.

Not silent.

Just different.

The group still gathered around the same long table. Aryan still talked too much. Dipanshu still stole food from other people's plates. Kritika still argued with him about it.

The routine was there.

But everyone felt the tension beneath it.

The laughter lasted a little longer than normal.

The jokes came a little more frequently.

Nobody wanted the conversation to die.

Because quiet left room for thoughts.

And lately, nobody liked their thoughts.

---

"Good news," Aryan announced dramatically while stealing a piece of toast from Deep's plate.

Deep looked at him.

"That's my toast."

"I know."

"Give it back."

"No."

---

Dipanshu pointed toward Aryan.

"See? This is why ghosts target people."

---

The table laughed.

Even Shristi managed a smile.

---

Aryan looked offended.

"What? I've done nothing wrong."

---

"You exist," Dev replied.

---

"That's rude."

---

"It was meant to be."

---

More laughter followed.

For a brief moment, everything felt normal again.

Only three people weren't completely fooled by it.

Wick.

Deep.

And Prishka.

---

Wick sat quietly, stirring his coffee while watching Shristi from across the table.

The thing that bothered him most wasn't the voices.

It wasn't even the necklace.

It was the fact that she remembered nothing.

Not the balcony.

Not the words she'd spoken.

Nothing.

It was as if someone had stolen pieces of her memory.

And that terrified him far more than any ghost story.

---

Deep noticed Wick's expression.

"You've been staring at your coffee for ten minutes."

Wick glanced up.

"I'm thinking."

---

"That's never a good sign."

Dipanshu nodded immediately.

"When he starts thinking, people usually get punched."

---

A few people laughed.

Wick didn't.

---

"Something's accelerating."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that usually meant he was worried.

The table slowly grew quiet.

---

"What do you mean?" Varsha asked.

---

Wick looked toward Shristi.

"Two days ago it was dreams."

He paused.

"Yesterday it was voices."

Another pause.

"And last night..."

Nobody needed him to finish.

Everyone remembered.

---

The mood instantly darkened.

---

Prishka lowered her gaze.

Because she agreed.

Every instinct she possessed was screaming the same thing.

Whatever was attached to Shristi wasn't waiting anymore.

It was getting stronger.

---

To avoid dwelling on it, the group decided to spend the day exploring the older part of town.

Nobody was allowed alone.

Not anymore.

---

The moment they stepped outside, Aryan automatically counted heads.

Old habit.

New responsibility.

---

"Eleven."

---

Dipanshu looked over.

"You counting people now?"

---

"Somebody has to."

---

The answer was simple.

Matter-of-fact.

---

Dipanshu smirked.

"But we're 10 now and 14 with others."

---

"Yeah but I counted necklace too."

Shristi Picked up a stone and threw at him.

---

For the first time all morning, Wick actually smiled.

---

The old fishing district was unlike the tourist areas.

The roads were narrower.

The buildings older.

Many of the locals looked like families who had lived there for generations.

There were fish shops and more fishing boats.

Less noise.

More stories.

"Why are we exactly going to fishing district?" Dipanshu asked.

"Because she found it in the Beach and Fisherman have the most knowledge of the sea." Wick calmly answer.

"Typical investigator Wick, Always step ahead." Said Deep.

---

While the rest of the group explored nearby shops, Wick, Deep, Dipanshu and Prishka quietly continued their investigation.

The photograph of the necklace remained on Prishka's phone.

They showed it to shop owners.

Fishermen.

Locals.

Most shook their heads.

Some refused to look at it at all.

---

Then they met an old fisherman sitting near the docks.

The moment he saw the photograph, his expression changed.

---

"Where did you find that?"

---

Prishka immediately noticed the fear in his eyes.

"On the beach."

The old man's face darkened.

"Should've left it there."

Nobody interrupted.

The fisherman stared toward the ocean.

For a long moment he said nothing.

Then he spoke quietly.

"My grandfather used to tell stories about things the sea returns."

---

"What kind of things?" Deep asked.

The old man smiled sadly.

"The kind that shouldn't come back."

---

A cold breeze passed through the harbor.

---

"The sea takes many things."

He looked at them.

"Sometimes it gives something back."

---

"And when it does?" Prishka asked.

---

The old fisherman looked directly at her.

"Someone pays."

---

Nobody liked that answer.

Especially Wick.

---

By the time they returned to the hotel, dark clouds had swallowed most of the sky.

The ocean looked rougher than before.

Restless.

Almost alive.

---

Back at the hotel, another problem was growing.

One none of them noticed immediately.

Sonal.

She'd become quieter over the last two days.

At first everyone assumed she was tired.

Then they assumed she was worried.

Now they weren't sure.

---

During lunch she barely spoke.

During sightseeing she drifted away from conversations.

Several times Dipanshu caught her staring toward the ocean.

Not casually.

Not thoughtfully.

Almost... listening.

---

Eventually he sat beside her.

"You okay?"

---

Sonal blinked.

As if she'd forgotten he was there.

"Yeah."

---

The answer came too quickly.

Dipanshu frowned.

"You sure?"

---

She nodded.

---

Then looked back toward the sea.

Conversation over.

Something about that bothered him.

A lot.

---

That evening the entire group gathered in the hotel restaurant.

The weather outside continued getting worse.

Rain tapped steadily against the windows.

The ocean beyond was barely visible now.

To keep everyone's mood up, Aryan started telling embarrassing stories.

Mostly about other people.

Never himself.

"I would like everyone to remember that Deep once got lost inside a shopping mall."

Deep immediately pointed at him.

"Because I was following you."

---

"That is not important."

---

"It is literally the important part."

The table erupted into laughter.

---

For a while, the tension eased.

For a while, the trip felt normal again.

Then a glass shattered.

Everyone jumped.

---

Sonal was standing beside the table.

Frozen.

---

The broken glass lay near her feet.

But she wasn't looking at it.

---

She was staring out the window.

Toward the dark ocean.

---

Completely motionless.

---

"Sonal?"

Kritika called.

No response.

---

Dipanshu stood immediately.

"Sonal."

---

Slowly, she turned toward him.

For a split second, something felt wrong.

Not her face.

Not her eyes.

Just...

Something.

Then it disappeared.

"What?"

she asked quietly.

---

The moment passed.

But not completely.

Because both Wick and Prishka had noticed it too.

And neither liked what they saw.

Later that night, sleep once again became impossible.

Rain hammered against the hotel windows.

The wind howled outside.

And somewhere beyond the storm, the ocean continued its endless song.

---

Inside Room 312, Varsha had already fallen asleep.

Prishka sat near the window reading.

Shristi lay awake staring at the ceiling.

---

Finally she spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

Prishka lowered her book.

"Of course."

---

Shristi hesitated.

For the first time in days, she looked genuinely vulnerable.

Not frightened by ghosts.

Not frightened by spirits.

Just frightened.

---

"Do you think I'm losing my mind?"

---

The question hit harder than Prishka expected.

Because beneath it was something much worse.

---

Hope.

---

Hope that all of this had a normal explanation.

---

Prishka moved to sit beside her.

"No."

---

"You answered too fast."

---

"Because I already know the answer."

---

Shristi looked at her.

Prishka smiled gently.

---

"Something is happening."

She squeezed her hand.

"But it's not you."

---

For the first time all day, some of the fear left Shristi's eyes.

---

Then both of them heard it.

---

A sound.

Faint.

Distant.

Beautiful.

Wrong.

---

Like a woman singing somewhere beyond the rain.

---

Prishka stood immediately.

The color drained from her face.

Because she heard it too.

And this time...

Shristi wasn't the only one.

Outside, beyond the storm and darkness, something was calling.

And for the first time...

It wasn't whispering to just one person.
