Chapter 114 - Chapter 113: I've Become a Huge Fool

"What's the task?" David asked, trying to muster up energy as he rolled up his sleeves, putting on a look of readiness.

The day Lin Mo had handed him the business card, although the outer layer was scraped off to reveal a golden-coated interior, David had not seen any further details beyond a name etched onto it. So even now, despite knowing the work wouldn't be as simple as trash collection, he still had no idea what the actual task was.

However, as long as the BOSS was in charge, David trusted that Lin Mo, as his classmate, would know his capabilities well. For tasks that exceeded his personal limits, Lin Mo wouldn't assign them to him lightly.

As expected, Lin Mo didn't waste any time and sent an address and phone number to David's communicator.

"The task today is simple. You'll head to the address I just sent you and find a Japanese man. Tell him I sent you to find him, and then follow his instructions. If you can't find him or run into any trouble, feel free to call him," Lin Mo explained.

David stared at the address on his communicator's display, still feeling a bit unsure. "What exactly is he going to have me do?"

Lin Mo didn't seem to mind. "Once you're there, you'll find out."

David frowned, a little uneasy. "Are you coming with me?"

David didn't fear going to a stranger's house, but being in Night City made him cautious. If the BOSS could come along, that would be great.

"Do you think I have nothing better to do?" Lin Mo responded, not in a hurry, his eyes still sparkling as he appeared to be reading some documents. "I've got something to do later. I'll probably leave before you."

"You rich little bastard, what could you possibly have to do?" David muttered under his breath.

"Just some personal matters, I've got an appointment with someone," Lin Mo answered indifferently.

Despite saying this, Lin Mo didn't seem rushed. He continued to relax on the sofa, watching a show on the holographic TV... as if waiting for something.

"By the way, is this job dangerous? If my mom finds out, she might not want me to work with you," David added.

"It's got some risk, but don't worry too much. When you get there, the Japanese man will give you the equipment you'll need for the job. Don't worry, the gear's free. Consider it a benefit for new recruits. And the best part..." Lin Mo's gaze took on a playful glint, and his tone became more enticing.

"The weekly salary is 2,000 euros, and according to the agreement, it won't interfere with your class schedule. So, the work schedule will depend on my arrangements."

As soon as Lin Mo spoke those numbers, David's eyes widened in shock, his throat nearly choking on the excitement.

2,000 euros!

That amount was enough to cover an average person's monthly salary in Night City, yet Lin Mo was saying that it was just the weekly wage?

Thinking back to when David was selling black-market Dream Tech, even though the prices for those techs were sky-high, he only made about 100 euros per transaction.

If he kept doing that... he'd make 8,000 euros a month.

At that rate, he could pay for his tuition at Arisaka Academy without having to make his mother work overtime anymore!

However, Lin Mo's next words were a heavy blow.

"This is just the base salary. If you do well, I'll increase the pay. Plus, since you're essentially a founding member of the studio, you'll eventually get equity once the studio grows!"

"Don't say another word, BOSS, I'll definitely do this job well!" David exclaimed, full of excitement.

As long as the money keeps coming, David wouldn't hesitate to work with strangers, and if Lin Mo asked him to even haul trash, David would gladly do it.

Lin Mo let out a sigh of relief. His biggest concern had been that David would grow distant due to the work and his changing status, making him feel too much respect or fear.

If that happened, he wouldn't have trained a legend but a dog who'd run after any scraps of reward.

But offering him rewards for certain tasks, helping him get used to the lure of money, and fostering an attitude of "money is just dirt" would be beneficial.

"By the way, how did your mother react? Did she agree to my work offer?" Lin Mo interrupted David's excitement.

David calmed down, recalling, "When I gave her the business card, at first she was confused, didn't understand your intentions. But after I mentioned the studio's benefits, she seemed happy, though still hesitant. She hasn't given a final answer yet."

"Is she worried the studio won't be as successful as Arisaka Corporation?" Lin Mo asked with a knowing smile.

David gave his friend a glance and nodded slowly. "Exactly."

As expected... Lin Mo thought.

A mother who cares deeply for her son, when it comes to matters related to her child, no matter how sharp her mind, she becomes simple, naive, and impulsive. Just like how she didn't consider the financial struggles and sent David to Arisaka Academy.

By using David as a leverage point, Lin Mo was confident it would just be a matter of time before the mother was convinced.

As for how to deal with Gloria's wish to see David succeed at Arisaka Academy, Lin Mo already had a solid solution.

This desire to see her son succeed was a mindset every parent shared.

With a little coaxing, Lin Mo planned to exaggerate David's talents and highlight the benefits of the studio, making it clear that even though they were a startup, they treated employees well and offered great benefits. Meanwhile, he could also expose some of Arisaka's internal issues, showing her that big corporations weren't all they were cracked up to be, and that the opportunity right in front of them was the one that mattered.

After a few strategic moves, Lin Mo was confident Gloria would eventually relent.

As he was thinking about how to approach Gloria, a phone call suddenly came in.

Lin Mo gave David a look, signaling for him to wait, then answered the call.

"Hello, kid, how have you been?" It was the familiar voice of Kagome.

"Just getting by, doing some small commissions," Lin Mo responded indifferently.

"Really? But what you did last night wasn't exactly a small commission. I saw the news this morning, and I thought my good kid got into some trouble." Kagome's voice was as laid-back as always.

Lin Mo couldn't help but feel a little impressed by her, though it wasn't much of a surprise. As a middleman, Kagome had to be sharp about information.

Middlemen like her stand at the top of the food chain of society's underworld, but they're also at the bottom of the corporate hierarchy. To survive, they have to stay alert.

If news of her business spread, a middleman who lost trust would quickly be discarded.

"Just got lucky, barely made it out alive. But about you, Kagome, why'd you call?" Lin Mo replied dismissively, quickly turning the conversation back to her.

"Just check the attachment later, don't worry, it's not a commission. A lion I recently hunted needs some time to rest, so I won't bother you, kid," Kagome politely said before hanging up.

Lin Mo, curious, opened the message Kagome sent.

[On the streets of Night City, four-wheeled cars are common, but a motorcycle that can hit top speeds on just two wheels? You've never seen anything like it. If you're tired of the regular cars, try this Kusanagi CT-3X. It won't disappoint. With your financial status, buying it will be like buying a little toy for you.]

[You don't need to worry about the car's origin, a kid who was gaming at my shop ended up pawning his beloved ride. It's practically new, and I've had it serviced, quality guaranteed.]

[Price: 38,000€]

Lin Mo: "..."

No matter how creative his imagination was, he never expected Kagome to offer him a second-hand motorcycle at this time.

Having the simulator's foresight, he knew she would call in the morning, so he patiently waited at David's place.

However, the content of the call wasn't detailed in the simulator, and now, to his surprise, Kagome was trying to sell him a motorcycle!

Well... I've truly become a big fool now!
