Chapter 42 - Belle Misses Her Beast: Chapter 1

For one impossible instant, Belle thought the curse had killed him.

Gold flooded the ruined balcony so brightly that she lost the shape of the Beast inside it. His great body had been beneath her hands a heartbeat earlier, impossibly heavy even in death, fur matted beneath her fingers, the last of his breath warm against her face. Then the light took him. It wrapped around his horns, his shoulders, his enormous hands, peeled his silhouette apart and lifted it into the air until Belle could see nothing but fire-bright magic and the outlines of limbs changing inside it. She stumbled backward with one hand over her mouth. Around them the castle groaned as if waking from a century of sleep; broken stone dragged itself together, shattered glass climbed back into leaded frames, dead vines tore loose from the walls and vanished into sudden green. Somewhere below, voices were becoming screams and then laughter. Belle barely heard any of it. She watched the body in the light grow smaller.

That was the first thing she noticed, though guilt would make her hate herself for remembering it later. Smaller. His shoulders narrowed. His legs straightened. The massive curve of his spine drew upright. Claws became fingers, paws became feet, fur dissolved into skin. When the light finally released him, a man fell onto the balcony stones where the Beast had been.

Belle stared.

He was handsome. She understood that immediately in the abstract way one understood a painting was beautiful even when it was not one's favorite painting. Long auburn hair fell around a young face, his features refined without being soft, his body lean and graceful where the Beast's had been broad enough to fill doorways. Then he opened his eyes, and Belle stopped breathing.

Those eyes she knew.

"Belle?"

His voice was different without the growl beneath it, but not so different that she could miss him. She crossed the space between them before she had decided to move, touched his face with both hands, searched it desperately for something she recognized, and found enough. The eyes. The slight furrow between his brows when he was uncertain. The way he looked at her as though waiting for a verdict that could either save or destroy him.

"It is you," she whispered.

Relief broke through everything else. He laughed, startled and breathless, and she kissed him because he was alive, because the Beast had not died beneath her hands, because the impossible had happened and she had gotten him back.

Everyone else got someone back too.

The castle erupted around them. Human voices replaced familiar clinks, ticks, scrapes, and rattles. Footmen appeared where furniture had stood. A stout woman with wet eyes gathered Belle into an embrace so fierce Belle knew her before she heard Mrs. Potts laugh into her shoulder. Chip was suddenly a boy with knees and elbows and a grin too large for his face. Lumière was taller than Belle had imagined and somehow exactly as theatrical. Cogsworth immediately began complaining about everyone standing around when there were protocols for the restoration of a royal household, though he stopped twice because he was crying too hard to continue.

Belle laughed with them. She cried. She let people hug her and kissed Adam again when the room demanded it, and when music began somewhere in the castle she allowed herself to be swept into a celebration so enormous that thinking became unnecessary.

It was not until later, when Adam reached for her hand, that she noticed his fingers. They were elegant hands, strong enough, clean, warm. Human hands.

Belle looked down at them longer than she meant to.

The Beast's hand had been large enough to wrap around both of hers. His claws had curved beyond the ends of his fingers, black and frightening when she first met him, later so familiar that she had once caught herself tracing one while reading beside the fire. His palms had been rough. Warm. Fur had covered the backs of his hands and thickened toward his wrists. When he had offered one to her in the ballroom, she had felt absurdly small placing her hand inside it.

Adam's thumb moved across her knuckles. "Belle, are you ok?"

She looked up quickly. "I'm fine."

He smiled, relieved, and she smiled back because she did not know what else to do.

For the first several days, she blamed shock. No sensible person could expect to adjust instantly to watching someone die, resurrect, and change species in the span of a minute. The castle itself seemed determined to prove that transformation was ordinary. Doors that had been warped by the curse hung straight. Portraits repaired themselves. The grounds filled with gardeners who spent their first mornings standing in sunlight and touching plants with bare human hands simply because they could. Servants rediscovered legs, stomachs, aching backs, bad knees, appetite, privacy, and the inconvenience of needing more than a polishing cloth to feel presentable. Everyone was learning their bodies again.

Belle told herself she was doing the same.

She learned Adam's human stride. It was lighter than the Beast's and far quieter; she stopped recognizing him by the tremor of floorboards before he entered a room. She learned that he no longer ducked beneath doorways, that chairs did not creak under him, that when he sat beside her on a sofa there was room left over. She learned that his body did not radiate the same heat. She learned that when he leaned close to speak, his breath was simply breath, not the hot wash she had once felt against her cheek strongly enough to stir loose strands of hair. She learned that kissing a mouth without fangs felt strangely empty. That thought horrified her enough that she refused to think it again for two days.

Adam, meanwhile, was relearning how to be a prince.

At first Belle found it charming. He had been trapped for years in a body that made every mirror an accusation; of course he wanted proper clothes, a shave, boots instead of bare paws on stone. Of course he stood straighter when a tailor measured him. Of course he spent too long looking at his own hands when he thought nobody was watching. Belle loved seeing him discover things he had thought lost forever.

Then, on the fourth morning, a steward hurried into the breakfast room carrying three folders and said, "Your Highness, the western tenants have sent word regarding the winter stores."

Adam looked up.

Nothing dramatic happened. He did not sneer. He did not demand obedience. He simply changed. His shoulders settled. His chin lifted. The uncertainty Belle knew so well receded behind something older and far more practiced. "Leave them with me. I'll review them before noon."

"Yes, Your Highness."

The steward bowed.

Belle almost did too.

Her body remembered before her mind did. Her father had taught her enough about the world beyond their village to know how one behaved before royalty. You did not speak to royalty as though he were the baker's son. You did not interrupt. You did not contradict him publicly. You showed respect, especially when you were a commoner standing in his castle eating from his table.

Her knees had actually begun to bend before she stopped herself. Adam had already opened the first folder.

Belle stared at him.

He did not notice.

She had thrown snow in the Beast's face. She had shouted at him in corridors and told him when he was being an ass. She had walked out on him. She had ordered him to sit still while she bandaged him and threatened to tie his hands if he kept interfering. She had argued about books, manners, temper, wolves, dinner, doors, and whether roaring counted as making a point.

She had never once considered bowing to him.

"Belle?" Adam looked up.

She realized she had been standing beside the table in silence. "I was just thinking."

His smile came easily now. "Dangerous habit."

Once, that would have made her laugh because the Beast had delivered jokes like contraband, awkwardly and with visible uncertainty about whether they would survive the journey. Adam said it smoothly.

Belle sat down. "Apparently."

She tried. That mattered to her later, when guilt found sharper teeth. She did not wake one morning, decide she preferred fur, and begin searching for another monster. She tried with the stubbornness that had carried her into a forbidden castle, through wolf-haunted woods, and directly into arguments with creatures twice her size.

Adam tried too, at least in the beginning. They walked together. They read in the library. He showed her parts of the estate that had been inaccessible during the curse, including old royal apartments and a tower observatory where the brass instruments had somehow survived decades of neglect. There were evenings when he forgot to be a prince and became familiar again. He would laugh too loudly, become embarrassed by it, and Belle would glimpse the Beast ducking his head beneath horns that no longer existed. Once, after spilling wine on a council memorandum, he made a low, frustrated sound so close to a growl that Belle's whole body reacted before her mind caught up.

She kissed him hard enough to surprise them both. For perhaps ten seconds, it worked. Then her hands reached automatically for fur at the sides of his face and found smooth skin.

Belle pulled away first.

Adam assumed she was embarrassed by her enthusiasm. He smiled, pleased, and she let him believe it because the truth was worse.

At night, memory became less cooperative. She remembered lying beside the Beast in front of the library fire when a winter storm had made the castle walls groan. They had not been lovers then. He had fallen asleep sitting against the sofa, and she had eventually leaned against his shoulder because the room was cold and he was warmer than three blankets. She remembered the impossible thickness of his arm beneath her cheek, the rumble in his chest when he breathed, the twitch of one ear when she turned a page. She remembered discovering that his fur was softer beneath his jaw and rougher along his forearms. She remembered the first time he had bared his fangs while laughing, and she realized she was no longer afraid of them.

Now Adam slept in a bed built for an ordinary man.

Belle sometimes lay awake beside him and felt as though the room had become too large.

A little more than a week after the curse broke, Belle spent one night alone thinking about him and letting herself imagine what might have happened if the curse had waited just a little longer.

She would be lying underneath him as he breathed roughly above her. With one clawed hand, he would pin both of her arms above her head, and the other hand would have one large claw slowly trace down her body from her sternum all the way down to her moist clit. She would already be wet at the thought of the danger she was in and the love she had for him. When his claw entered her, it would immediately scrape against her G-Spot, and she would cum almost immediately. He would then lean forward and kiss her, but not the tender kisses they had been having; this time he would force his large and long tongue into her mouth and down her throat. She would suck on his tongue as best she could, treating it like the weirdest blow job ever. Eventually he would release her as he lay down on his back, his massive penis standing tall for the whole world to see.

She would stare at it with wonder.

'How the hell am I going to get that inside of me!' she would think. However, she wouldn't get a chance to decide how she would do it as her beast would not be gentle; he would live up to his name and be a beast in bed.

He lifts her up and slams his thick rod straight into her sopping cunt. She lets out a silent scream as she writhes in pleasure and pain. Her hips feel like they are about to pop out of their sockets. He then proceeds to use her like a living fleshlight.

She is not aware of how much time has passed when he finally stops pulling her up and down and just lets her sit in his throbbing member. She knows she had orgasmed over 8 times and he had erupted in her, at least twice. Her stomach was bloated as the knot on his animal dick wouldn't let a drop of his semen escape her body.

She leaned forward onto his broad, furry chest, and kisses him over and over. They fall asleep together with his gigantic dick still deep within her.

When the fantasy finally released her, Belle lay motionless beneath the covers, pulse pounding in her throat, and the sheets below her soaked wet from her fantasy.

She finally accepted that she missed the physical aspect of her Beast: the weight, the intense heat that he radiated and the soft fur that covered him like a living blanket she could hug. The dangerous claws and teeth that were both dangerous and sexy. The overwhelming strength she had once feared and later trusted. In her imagination, the Beast had been rougher than he had ever been with her in life.

Not because she wanted pain for its own sake but because the possibility of danger had always been part of what made his restraint matter. He could have hurt her. He had known it. She had known it. Every careful touch had therefore contained a choice.

Adam was gentle; the Beast had needed to be. Belle covered her face with both hands. "This is ridiculous," she whispered into her palms. Her body disagreed.

The next morning Adam kissed her cheek over breakfast, and Belle nearly flinched from guilt. He noticed only enough to ask if she had slept badly. She said yes, which was technically true, and spent the rest of the morning furious with herself for turning a private fantasy into evidence.

People desired things they did not need. People fantasized about strangers, impossible situations, fictional heroes, dangerous ideas they would never actually choose. That did not mean their real relationships were false.

So Belle tried harder.

She joined Adam during meetings and discovered another difficulty. The Beast had asked questions because he had been isolated from the world and uncertain of himself. Adam drew conclusions. He was not stupid, nor particularly cruel, but his confidence returned faster than his patience. When Belle disagreed with him about increasing timber collection before winter, he listened for perhaps half a minute before interrupting to explain estate management as though she had not spent her entire childhood watching villagers calculate whether one failed harvest would kill them.

"You are assuming the southern woods recover at the same rate as the north," Belle said.

"They always have."

"Before a curse left half the estate unmanaged for years."

"Belle." The single word was not harsh, but it carried finality.

She stopped speaking. Adam continued. The Beast would have argued with her until they were both hoarse. Belle found herself missing that too.

Three days later, Adam apologized without quite understanding what he was apologizing for. Belle accepted because she did not want every discomfort to become a referendum on whether she loved him. She wanted to be reasonable. She wanted to give him time. More dangerously, she wanted to prove to herself that the transformation had not taken something from them that could never be returned.

Eventually she settled on the simplest possibility.

They had not yet been lovers before the curse broke. Desire between them had existed in glances, touches, proximity, and in the strange electric awareness Belle had developed whenever the Beast stood behind her.

Human Adam was unfamiliar because she had never crossed that last boundary with either version of him. Perhaps her mind simply had not connected his new body to everything that had been growing between them.

Maybe sex with his human form could replace her want for the fur of his Beast form and the danger he had presented.

Adam lay down on the bed looking at her with love as well as lust, his dick fully erect. She was not impressed with its size. As she got on top of him and lowered herself onto his member, she was even more disappointed. It didn't even fully penetrate her; she didn't say or act like anything was wrong, though, and started to ride him roughly. Shaking her hips back and forth, placing her hands on his chest as he grabbed her large breasts, squeezing them tightly together. It was obvious he had done this before, but she felt like he was treating her like a common whore and not someone who loved her.

"Oooo Bellle, I'm cumming!!!" He yelled out as he roughly grabbed her breasts and pulled her towards him and French-kissed her; the kiss was not great either.

'You've got to be kidding me, it's only been like 10 minutes', she thought. Belle realized that she would have to fake an orgasm as well; it wasn't hard, but she rolled her eyes. She had had better sex with a 66-year-old farmer. Her family had needed food for the winter, and he would give it to her in exchange for sex with her; he was definitely a better lover than the prince, who was smiling at her like he had accomplished something great.

She was shocked that she had had to fake an orgasm for Adam; in all of her fantasies, her Beast would go for hours, and she truly believed that if he were still a beast, he would live up to those expectations. However, his current human form was pathetic. The fact that he looked proud made her sick. He had obviously had sex before, most likely with servant girls and whores. The women he had been with probably never dared to say anything. She would not say anything to him either. It was just one more nail in the coffin, proving she could not be with this man.

She honestly felt a bit bad about that decision. Adam had definitely fallen in love with her and still cared about her, but she just couldn't match that love; he was different. He was a prince now, not the kind of lonely beast she had found in the quiet castle.

Her throat tightened.

Beside her, Adam shifted closer in his sleep. His arm settled across her waist. It was a pleasant weight. Too light. Belle closed her eyes.

I want my Beast back.

The next two weeks became an exercise in refusing to listen to herself. Belle filled her days. She helped Mrs. Potts reorganize household stores, spent hours with the estate steward learning which villages technically fell under Adam's authority, and accompanied him on rides through lands that had only recently become accessible again. She read until her eyes hurt. She continued to have unenjoyable sex with Adam often enough that no one watching them would have guessed anything was wrong.

The castle certainly did not guess. To everyone else, the ending had happened exactly as endings were supposed to happen. The prince was restored. The curse was broken. Belle remained at his side. Servants who had spent years as objects were now planning weddings, visiting relatives who had thought them dead, reclaiming names that had gone unused for so long they felt borrowed.

Belle could not bear to poison their happiness with a problem she still hoped might disappear. Adam, meanwhile, became more himself every day.

Unfortunately, Belle was beginning to understand that the Beast had also been himself.

They had not been two separate people, whatever fairy tales preferred to claim. The curse had not hidden a perfect prince beneath an ugly shell. It had changed Adam, humiliated him, isolated him, stripped away almost every social advantage on which he had once relied, and forced him to discover whether anything remained when beauty and authority no longer worked.

Something had remained. Belle had fallen in love with it. Now the old scaffolding was being rebuilt around that inner man. Servants deferred to him. People bowed and praised him. Advisors awaited his decisions. Even when Adam was kind, the kindness increasingly came from above, as he looked down at them.

Her Beast had sat beside Belle on the floor because she refused to speak to him while he loomed over her in anger.

Prince Adam summoned chairs. The Beast had learned to ask. Adam remembered how to expect. The difference was rarely large enough to accuse him of anything. That made it harder. Belle could not point to one unforgivable act and declare the man she loved gone. She could only collect moments until they became weight.

Almost a month after the curse broke, Belle stood before a mirror while a maid pinned the back of a new blue dress and realized she was watching the door, hoping Adam wouldn't enter. She didn't want to see the human; she wanted to see the dangerous beast. She wanted to hear the creaks on the floor before she even saw him.

By evening, she had made a decision. She did what she had always done when the world stopped making sense. She went to the library.

The royal library was larger now than it had been under the curse, though Belle suspected that was an illusion created by reopened galleries and restored collections. Whole sections she had assumed were decorative walls turned out to contain doors. Locked cabinets had keys again. The royal archives occupied two floors beneath the western wing and smelled of leather, dust, wax, and the accumulated certainty of generations who had believed their paperwork important enough to preserve forever.

Belle began cautiously. She did not search for monsters. That word was too broad. She began with transformation curses.

There were hundreds.

Most were useless. Frogs, Birds, Trees, Sleep, Memory. They were not what she was looking for. After a few hours, she finally found something. Bloodline curses; curses that lasted for generations.

That led her to hereditary transformations.

There were communities in distant mountain ranges where animal traits appeared naturally in certain families: horns, tails, scales, fur, dangerous sharp claws. Islands whose inhabitants were described by one horrified ambassador as "men only in speech and law," a description so pompous that Belle wrote idiot in the margin of her notes.

A northern kingdom had once sent a delegation led by an antlered man nearly seven feet tall. Another text described a coastal people with sealskin and webbed hands who traded pearls for iron. There were shapeshifters whose second forms were inherited rather than cursed and families in which the line between human and beast had apparently never existed at all.

Belle read faster. The first night she told herself it was curiosity. The second night she began copying maps. By the fourth, she had developed categories: Distance, Language, Known temperaments, Religious restrictions. Sexual customs. Whether outsiders were permitted to visit or make a home for themselves.

One record from the eastern marches included sketches copied from a diplomatic procession twenty-three years earlier. Belle nearly turned the page because the first several figures were ordinary human nobles in ceremonial dress. Then she saw the woman behind them.

A beautiful, dangerous-looking wolf woman

Not wearing a wolf mask. Not cursed, according to the accompanying text. The ambassador described her as a younger daughter of a ruling house whose people carried lupine traits with varying intensity. She stood upright, richly dressed, one clawed hand resting on the pommel of a sword. Her muzzle was longer than the Adams had been. Her ears rose through dark hair. Fur covered her visible hands and throat.

Belle's fingers stopped on the page. She had been searching for beast men. That was a mistake. When she imagined finding someone who made her feel that same impossible combination of awe, trust, lust, and danger, her mind had simply followed the shape it already knew: a man.

The woman in the drawing disrupted that assumption in less than a second.

Belle leaned closer. The artist had been skilled enough to catch an expression in the eyes: amused, perhaps, or simply unimpressed with whoever had commissioned the portrait.

Belle felt something warm and interested stir in her loins.

This widened the search considerably. She turned to a fresh sheet.

By midnight, the page was crowded with names, ports, kingdoms, notes on roads, references to other volumes, and questions she could not yet answer. Some entries were men. Some were women. Some were merely places where Belle had reason to believe people resembling the Beast might exist. She did not know whether she intended to travel. She did not know whether she intended to leave Adam. She did not know whether any person she found would possess the gentleness she had loved beneath dangerous claws and fangs, or whether she was reducing strangers to a list of physical traits she wanted for a lover.

But for the first time since the curse broke, she did not feel as though she were waiting for something impossible to return.

The Beast was gone. That did not mean he had been the only one of his kind the world could offer her.

Belle looked down at the paper. If anyone found it, the explanation would be difficult. A woman living in a prince's castle, publicly assumed to be his future bride, had secretly compiled a list of foreign beastfolk, shapeshifters, unusual bloodlines, potentially eligible nobles, and travel routes. She had underlined dangerous yet sensitive twice beside one species. Near another, she had written excellent claws.

Belle put her face in her hands. She should burn it. Instead, Belle folded the page carefully along the center, folded it once more, and slipped it in between her bountiful breasts.
