Chapter 580: The Strange Lupo Girl
The girl desperately trying to hide her identity was naturally none other than the famous young elite officer of the Lungmen Guard Department—
Special Inspection Unit Chief Ch'en.
Truthfully, very few people even knew her full name. Most of the time, everyone simply referred to her as "Ch'en." Even within the Guard Department itself, her personal background was kept heavily classified, with only a small handful of colleagues aware of the details.
Of course, as one of Lungmen's greatest information brokers, Lin Yuhsia naturally knew quite a few secrets about her.
In fact, while Ch'en herself might barely recognize Lin Yuhsia, Lin Yuhsia had long since investigated her thoroughly.
"Can't you pick someone else to mess with?" Lin Yuhsia sighed as she turned toward Steven, who was already cracking his knuckles like he was preparing for entertainment. "How should I put this… her backing is huge."
"It's not that I think there's anyone you can't afford to offend," she added honestly. "But if you really end up clashing with her, I'm the one stuck in the middle, and that'll be a massive headache for me."
Knowing full well that Steven was the type who ignored both reason and restraint equally, Lin Yuhsia could only try persuading him in a surprisingly gentle tone.
"Huh?" Steven blinked in confusion. "Aren't gangs and cops supposed to hate each other by default? Sure, technically you all work under Wei Yenwu too, but you're telling me you won't even dare provoke a Special Inspection Unit Chief?"
He genuinely didn't understand.
If anything, he'd assumed Lin Yuhsia would be happy to watch him mess with the little dragon cop.
"Well, you're not wrong," Lin Yuhsia admitted with a shrug. "She causes us trouble all the time."
"But…"
She hesitated briefly before deciding there was no point hiding it.
"You're considered one of Lungmen's collaborators now anyway, so telling you probably won't matter."
Lowering her voice slightly, she explained:
"That police Special Inspection Unit Chief is Chief Wei's niece."
Steven stared at her.
Lin Yuhsia could only silently pray this idiot would show at least some restraint.
Back at the Guard Department, he and Ch'en already clearly didn't get along. Now that they were outside official territory, who knew what kind of horrible prank this petty guy might cook up?
But Steven simply waved dismissively.
"What's there to understand? Her background being huge has nothing to do with me."
He looked completely unconcerned.
"Relax. I'm a law-abiding citizen, alright? The reason I think she looks interesting is because I'm considering becoming a kind-hearted citizen who helps her solve a case."
He even sounded righteous saying it.
"Don't tell me that's illegal too?"
Contrary to Lin Yuhsia's expectations, Steven actually didn't dislike Ch'en at all.
Sure, he found the overly serious dragon girl amusing and wouldn't mind teasing her a little—just like he did with Lin Yuhsia—but genuinely targeting her with malicious tricks? That would be too much.
After all, regardless of personality, Ch'en was sincerely risking herself for Lungmen's safety and doing her job properly.
And Steven wasn't some unreasonable lunatic who couldn't distinguish right from wrong.
"Then maybe take a closer look at what she's actually doing first," Lin Yuhsia said helplessly.
"I'll just say this…"
Her expression turned strange.
"No normal police officer secretly follows people around like that."
"Did the Guard Department seriously run out of manpower or something?"
Lin Yuhsia pointed toward Ch'en, who was currently sneaking around behind cover after cover.
It was obvious she was deliberately trying to conceal her tailing operation.
Unfortunately, she was terrible at it.
Whether it was her tracking technique or her disguise skills, both were painfully amateurish. Apparently, the police academy hadn't included "how to stalk people properly" in the curriculum.
As for the Lupo girl Ch'en was following—she had clearly already noticed the absurdly inexperienced surveillance behind her.
And yet, instead of exposing Ch'en, she seemed to be intentionally leading her somewhere.
Steven's gaze naturally shifted onto the girl herself.
The first thing he noticed was the pair of unusually designed twin swords hanging at her waist.
The second was the black Originium crystal openly exposed against her unnaturally pale skin, without even the slightest attempt to hide it.
An Infected.
That identity wasn't exactly rare in Lungmen, but that didn't mean Infected people were welcomed warmly.
Even in the comparatively tolerant Lungmen, the majority of the people are hostile toward them.
Which was why most Infected made deliberate efforts to cover the Originium growing on their bodies.
Someone as brazen as this girl, openly displaying her condition without concern for others' reactions, was incredibly rare.
And because of that, the pedestrians around her instinctively kept their distance after noticing the black crystals on her skin.
That only made Ch'en—who stubbornly continued tailing her from behind—stand out even more awkwardly.
"An Infected, huh…" Lin Yuhsia narrowed her eyes slightly. "That's technically not even the Guard Department's jurisdiction."
"And judging from that girl…"
Her tone grew more serious.
"She's far more dangerous than she looks."
Anyone bold enough to reveal their identity so openly was usually not someone easy to deal with.
And although Lungmen didn't prohibit carrying weapons inside the city, someone swaggering around with a pair of swords displayed so openly was still unusual.
No wonder Ch'en had become interested in her.
Honestly, it would've been hard for anyone not to feel curious about such a suspicious girl.
Still…
Because she was Infected, most people chose the safer option:
Mind their own business.
If she hadn't been busy entertaining Steven today, Lin Yuhsia admitted she probably would've investigated the mysterious Lupo girl herself.
Though unlike Ch'en, she certainly wouldn't have been discovered so easily. Nor would she have allowed herself to get baited around by the nose like this.
And more importantly—
Lin Yuhsia's instincts were screaming warnings at her.
Beneath that energetic smile the girl wore so casually lurked a madness that couldn't fully be hidden.
Combined with the natural sense of pressure she radiated, everything about her screamed danger.
"Aren't you worried about your boss's precious niece walking straight into trouble like that?" Steven asked cheerfully. "She's obviously fishing."
He grinned.
"At this rate, she might lure that pretty police officer into some deserted alley later and turn her into a lump of meat, you know?"
Steven had only become interested after realizing exactly that.
After all, unexpected entertainment was always the best kind.
Schemes you planned yourself just didn't have the same flavor.
"When did you start thinking she needs protecting?" Lin Yuhsia replied with a shrug.
"She didn't become a Special Inspection Unit Chief because of Chief Wei's influence."
Her lips curled slightly.
"She earned that position with actual results."
At this point, Lin Yuhsia more or less understood what Steven was thinking.
And honestly, she found herself looking forward to whatever happened next too.
