Chapter 512 - Chapter 751-760

Chapter 751: Dugu Bo, Part 2

Faced with Dugu Bo's fierce glare, Ye Lingling felt wronged and flustered. She hadn't done anything wrong, so why was he so intimidating? Still, she dutifully explained, "I'm not sure if his spirit is the Man-Faced Demon Spider, but he did have eight spider-like legs appear behind him during the fight. At the end, he even stabbed Yan-jie and used one of those spider legs to threaten me into healing his team."

As she recounted the incident, a sudden realization struck Ye Lingling, and she continued, "Oh, right, Dugu-grandfather! It seems that Teacher Qin Ming knew the team we faced. He specifically told us to hold back before the match, which is why we lost so easily. If you want the details, it's best to ask Teacher Qin Ming."

Standing nearby, Qin Ming felt numb with disbelief—after all this time, it turned out the root of the trouble lay with his own junior brother?!

Dugu Bo's cold, dangerous gaze turned toward him, sending a chill through Qin Ming. "Go on, speak," Dugu Bo said in a low, menacing voice.

Qin Ming's heart sank as he grappled with what to say. What did he even know? He was only familiar with Shrek Academy's teachers; he knew little about the students. Well, maybe he did know a bit about some of the more renowned spirits, but what was there to say about Tang San's Blue Silver Grass?

Wait—something suddenly clicked for Qin Ming. If Tang San's spirit was Blue Silver Grass, then where did he get those spider legs?

Lost in thought, Qin Ming failed to respond immediately, and Dugu Bo's patience wore thin. With a wave of his hand, he unleashed a powerful surge of spirit energy that sent Qin Ming crashing to his knees.

The impact jolted Qin Ming back to reality, a cold sweat breaking out as he realized his deadly error. He was in front of a Titled Douluo known for his mercurial temper, and he'd dared to drift off in thought!

Though loyal by nature, Qin Ming couldn't help feeling betrayed by Shrek Academy. After all, his students had been told to show restraint, only for Shrek's team to use such ruthless tactics, endangering the life of a Titled Douluo's granddaughter. Qin Ming wished he could go back to Soto City and give his juniors a harsh lesson.

But right now, all he could do was try to salvage the situation. As much as he wanted to hold Shrek's students accountable, he couldn't simply throw them under the bus, especially when some of them were students of his former teacher or had high-status backgrounds. They were all well-connected; he needn't worry too much on their behalf.

Taking a deep breath, Qin Ming carefully chose his words. "Your Eminence, please forgive me. This was a terrible accident. I had no idea that Shrek's team would resort to such underhanded tactics, leading to Yan'er's poisoning. However, she's safe now, and I beg Your Eminence not to act hastily. The one who injured her is the son of Thunder Douluo, and it would be most unfortunate if this incident caused discord between two esteemed Douluos—"

Before Qin Ming could finish, Dugu Bo's eyes flashed with fury, and he sent another wave of spirit power that sent Qin Ming flying out of the room again.

"Enough with your little schemes," Dugu Bo said icily. "Did you think bringing up Yu Yuanzhen would make me back off? Be gone. I'll let you live, seeing as you're Yan'er's teacher, but I'll handle this matter my own way."

Bitterly, Qin Ming bowed his head, admitting defeat. He'd been foolish to think he could sway a man as shrewd as Dugu Bo. However, this did give him some reassurance that Shrek's team was likely safe. Still, he knew he'd earned Dugu Bo's permanent ire and could only hope the man wouldn't sabotage his career out of spite.

Because of Qin Ming's intervention, the issue had now escalated to a matter involving Titled Douluos. With Dugu Yan's condition stabilized, Dugu Bo dismissed the others from his residence but stopped Ye Wen from leaving.

Ye Wen had expected this but still played the part of the bewildered guest. "Might I ask what business Your Eminence has with me?"

For centuries, the Dugu clan had relied solely on spirit power to suppress their bloodline's venom. Ye Wen's unorthodox method of temporarily saving Dugu Yan's life piqued Dugu Bo's interest, as it could have saved his own son had he known of it then. Though Dugu Bo was not one to owe favors lightly, he was intrigued by Ye Wen's ingenuity and thus kept him back.

However, Dugu Bo disliked being indebted to others. After all, it was only due to Prince Xue Xing saving his life that he'd reluctantly agreed to serve as a protector for the Heaven Dou Empire upon becoming a Titled Douluo.

"Listen, kid. I'm interested in the method you used to suppress Yan'er's poison," Dugu Bo said evenly. "Name your price, and it's yours."

Feigning surprise, Ye Wen quickly replied, "It was a minor technique, Your Eminence; there's no need to discuss payment. I'll share it freely."

With that, Ye Wen presented a bottle of Blood-Replenishing Pills and explained the bloodletting method's underlying principle.

Dugu Bo listened intently, nodding occasionally as he grasped the straightforward but effective logic behind it. Though crude, the bloodletting method, combined with the use of Blood-Replenishing Pills, proved to be an effective way to mitigate the effects of toxin accumulation. Dugu Bo mentally tested the method on himself, realizing it could indeed reduce his own internal toxins, sparing him the agony of constant venom backlash.

However, as Ye Wen explained the pills' minor side effect—shortening lifespan—Dugu Bo's face darkened. As a Titled Douluo, he could live up to four hundred years, so a small loss wasn't much to him. But Dugu Yan, barely twenty and not yet a Soul Ancestor, lacked his vitality, and her future prospects were limited. Dugu Bo, as his family's first Titled Douluo, understood this reality better than anyone.

Though his temper was infamous, Dugu Bo wouldn't blame Ye Wen for the method's side effect. After all, he was deeply grateful that Dugu Yan had survived. She might never reach Titled Douluo rank herself, but with this treatment, he could at least guarantee her a safe and stable life.

"Kid, you're quite capable," Dugu Bo said, softening. "Since you refuse payment, I owe you a favor. Should you face a problem you can't solve, come find me."

Chapter 752: Dugu Bo, Part 3

Ye Wen gave a slight bow in thanks and was about to excuse himself, moving naturally toward the exit. Dugu Bo, seeing this natural demeanor, felt assured that Ye Wen held no hidden agenda against him. But just as Ye Wen reached the doorway, he suddenly paused.

Dugu Bo raised an eyebrow. "Young man, is there something else you wish to say?"

Ye Wen couldn't simply leave after all his scheming and the risks he'd taken. His ultimate goal wasn't merely a verbal promise but the grand opportunity that awaited him at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, where Tang San's true fortune lay. However, he also knew that too much eagerness might trigger Dugu Bo's suspicion. So he put on a conflicted expression, as if struggling with what to say, and eventually, with a sigh, bowed apologetically, as if ready to leave.

Dugu Bo, suspicious once more, sensed that Ye Wen was hiding something important, something significant to himself. Though other Titled Douluos might have been too proud to question a junior, Dugu Bo was not like them. He raised a hand, and a powerful force immediately pulled Ye Wen back from the doorway to face him once more.

"Hey! Elder Dugu, what are you doing?" Ye Wen cried in feigned panic.

With narrowed, dangerous eyes, Dugu Bo spoke coldly, "Don't play coy with me, boy. I've lived through more than you can imagine. What are you hiding? Speak up, or you'll get a taste of my serpent venom."

Ye Wen, struggling internally, was really seeing Dugu Bo's volatile nature up close for the first time—one moment an ally, the next an interrogator. Heart pounding, he mustered his resolve, putting on a hesitant face and stammering, "I-I don't know what you mean, Elder. Please, just let me go. I'm frightened."

Dugu Bo let out a chilly laugh. "Oh, I warned you not to fool me, brat. Irritate me further, and neither your House Huo nor the Crown Prince can save you." A venomous green energy appeared around him, shifting into writhing serpents that slithered ominously around Ye Wen.

Feeling the pressure of Dugu Bo's murderous intent, Ye Wen put on a conflicted expression as if deciding something. He closed his eyes and finally whispered, "Fine, I'll tell you. But I must ask that you promise not to harm my family or House Huo in any way."

Dugu Bo snorted in disdain, but after a pause, he nodded. "Fine, I swear it. I'm not one to harm the innocent without cause."

"Then, please swear it formally," Ye Wen insisted, keeping his eyes tightly closed.

Dugu Bo studied Ye Wen, wondering just what this "big secret" was, something so dangerous it required a vow to be kept. Feeling his curiosity grow, he agreed. This brat seemed sincere in his fear, and that intrigued him further.

Ye Wen then opened his eyes, his expression resolute. "Elder Dugu, I have no solid proof of this, but from what I've observed, it seems that the poison within Miss Dugu Yan is inherited, becoming more potent as her cultivation level increases, potentially endangering her life."

Dugu Bo's gaze flickered at this revelation, but he didn't display the shock he had when Tang San had pointed out his own affliction in the original story. As a family with a long history, the Dugu clan was well aware of the risks posed by their spirit's venom, and they'd spent generations honing their cultivation techniques to keep it under control. Outsiders, who thought his venom had stabilized upon reaching Titled Douluo rank, simply didn't know the truth. Since Ye Wen hadn't mentioned Dugu Bo's own venom, Dugu Bo's reaction was calm.

"So, that's it?" Dugu Bo scoffed, toying with his long green hair nonchalantly. "Where did you even get this idea? But don't worry, we have ways to keep it in check as our cultivation grows. Now, be on your way. You're wasting my time."

With a dismissive wave, Dugu Bo began to turn, intending to check on Dugu Yan. But just then, Ye Wen spoke up again, his voice calm yet firm.

"Elder, aren't you lying to yourself? Have you truly freed yourself from the venom that haunts your own body?"

Dugu Bo stopped mid-step, his body going rigid. Slowly, he turned to face Ye Wen, his eyes narrowing into sharp slits as he locked his piercing gaze onto Ye Wen's face.

Chapter 753: Dugu Bo, Part 4

Dugu Bo didn't release even a hint of his soul power, but the oppressive atmosphere within the hall felt as thick as a physical weight, every inch of the space filled with his silent, yet deadly aura. Ye Wen felt as if he could barely breathe under the tension, until finally, Dugu Bo reined in this invisible pressure.

Initially planning to leave, Dugu Bo now stepped toward Ye Wen, his tall frame looming like a shadow under the sunlight, masking his expression. Ye Wen felt a wave of anxiety wash over him. When Tang San had first exposed this secret, it was Tang Hao's reputation that had spared him from Dugu Bo's fury. Ye Wen had no such assurance of safety here.

Dugu Bo spoke, "You're clever, and your talent as a Soul Master is certainly not lacking. Judging by your look, it seems you're convinced of my condition. Yet, this is my deepest secret. Tell me, then—why would you be so determined to say it, even at the risk of your own life?"

Though Dugu Bo's tone was even, his long right hand now rested on Ye Wen's shoulder, a silent but deadly reminder that a wrong answer could mean instant death. Suppressing his fear, Ye Wen knew this was the moment of truth; his life now hung on his response.

Forcing himself to calm down, Ye Wen answered in a low voice, "Elder, I'm a healer. My life's pursuit is to find treatments for all types of ailments. Though cases like yours are rare on the Douluo Continent, they're not unheard of. I wished to study your condition to see if I could identify a method to cure it—or if, by extension, it might help me develop other methods of treatment."

Dugu Bo removed his hand from Ye Wen's shoulder and gave the faintest of smiles. Now certain that this young man had no intention of sharing his secret, Dugu Bo had already used his mental power to sense Ye Wen's pulse and noted the steady, untroubled rhythm—a pulse only an innocent man could have.

Despite this, Dugu Bo wasn't one to hand over his trust so easily. With decades of dealing with his own venomous affliction, he wouldn't entrust his health to another so readily. Sitting back, he asked, "Very well, let's say you've passed my test. But tell me—what makes you so sure that I suffer the same venomous fate as Yan? After all, my title is 'Poison.' For someone like me to be tormented by my own poison… it's almost laughable."

With a self-deprecating smile, Dugu Bo added, "So, tell me, young healer, do you actually have a cure for this so-called congenital poison?"

Though exhausted from the tension, Ye Wen felt a surge of relief, sensing he was finally on stable ground. Gathering his thoughts, he replied, "Elder, I can't claim a complete cure just yet, but I do have two ideas. Would you like to hear them?"

Originally asking more as a joke, Dugu Bo now found himself intrigued by this young man's ideas. "Go on," he replied, his interest piqued. "If you give me a useful insight, I may just reward you with a little opportunity."

"Thank you, Elder." Ye Wen bowed in gratitude, then explained, "The first idea may not work for you, but it could help Miss Dugu Yan. Generally, Soul Masters have two main options for resisting toxins: strengthening their own resistance to poison or using soul power as a barrier to prevent toxins from penetrating. I've observed quite a few Soul Masters with poisonous spirits. Though they don't have a case as serious as yours, I've noticed that most show mild symptoms of poisoning from their own soul abilities."

Dugu Bo nodded, recognizing the logic. Though his own condition was unique, other poison-based Soul Masters did indeed experience side effects from their spirits.

Ye Wen continued, "From my observations, these cases stem from their beast spirits, often with lower-ranked spirit rings. While this is just a theory, I believe that the venom within your family might have originally been inherited after your ancestors absorbed it unknowingly. Due to natural resistance, it gradually integrated into your lineage and evolved over time. However, with each generation gaining new soul abilities and toxin traits, the poison likely mutated further, becoming deadlier as it passed down. As for Miss Yan, her poison has yet to mutate due to her lower-ranked rings and relatively young age. However, as she reaches higher levels, especially if she gains a ten-thousand-year ring, the poison will likely increase in strength."

Ye Wen explained methodically, as though he were a seasoned scholar outlining a theory. Though he told Dugu Bo he could disregard this as speculation, Dugu Bo's expression grew grave, recalling his own experiences.

"When I first began cultivating, my poison was weak, very similar to my father's venom. Yan started experiencing shorter periods of relief with each new level she reached. Even if it's conjecture, this boy might just be onto something… Perhaps…" Dugu Bo's eyes now held a glimmer of hope as he looked at Ye Wen.

Chapter 754: Dugu Bo, Part Five

Ye Wen continued his explanation with vigor.

"This poison-inheritance theory is still under verification, but that's not the main point. What I want to say, Senior, is that while poison-based soul skills can harm poison Soul Masters, the damage they cause tends to be relatively minor for others. Poison Soul Masters, after all, have built-in toxin resistance, and with beast spirits, their bodies are naturally robust. Only the most extreme poisons—like that of the Jade Phosphor Serpent, a top-tier spirit—would produce symptoms as severe as yours. Still, even with this poison backlash, your family hasn't experienced sudden deaths due to spirit awakenings alone. This led me to the first treatment option: abandoning the pursuit of poisonous soul rings and instead acquiring rings that enhance physical resilience."

Dugu Bo nodded in agreement, considering this fresh approach.

"Although this choice may temporarily lower a poison soul master's offensive power, life itself is worth any sacrifice. A skillfully utilized physical enhancement ability could still turn one into a powerful assault-type battle spirit master. For example, I would recommend the Titan Python or Forest Python for Miss Yan's fourth ring. Additionally, since the Jade Phosphor Serpent is technically a dragon-based beast, she could hunt dragon-type soul beasts to obtain more formidable skills. With your status as a Titled Douluo, this should be feasible," Ye Wen suggested.

Dugu Bo silently agreed, feeling an understanding he hadn't had before. With his own limitations in mind, he'd always selected serpentine soul beasts, as had his family for generations. Before he was strong enough, his father had succumbed to the poison, leaving him to find soul rings on his own. Without allies to assist, he hadn't dared to tackle dragon-type soul beasts. But now he saw the benefit of such a change.

Dugu Bo nodded. "Good idea. I see potential in that approach. And your other proposal?"

Gathering his thoughts, Ye Wen began, "The second method is specific to your case, and it may be flawed. I would be grateful if you'd correct any errors, Senior."

Ye Wen's respectful attitude pleased Dugu Bo. Unlike Tang San's proud confidence in the original story, Ye Wen showed humility despite his intellect. This approach earned Dugu Bo's respect, for he, too, had a code of returning courtesy with respect.

"Proceed," Dugu Bo encouraged, intrigued.

Ye Wen continued, "With each advance in strength, the poison in a poison Soul Master grows stronger. For you, Senior, this has likely led to substantial poison accumulation, forming toxic nodes throughout your body. If not expelled, they could eventually become harmful, maybe even fatal, over time. Based on Miss Yan's symptoms, I'd guess these nodes are thoroughly integrated throughout your body, making extraction nearly impossible."

Dugu Bo nodded slightly. His condition was indeed as Ye Wen had described—an accumulation of poison embedded deep within his body. Although he bore the title of Poison Douluo, his soul power couldn't purge these toxins.

Ye Wen continued, his expression becoming grim. "Using medication to suppress the nodes is unlikely, given your power level as a Titled Douluo. Ordinary medicines wouldn't work. You'd need rare soul-beast-based herbs to achieve any real effect. But such resources are extremely rare and costly. Although I've studied extensively, I lack the connections to access these materials."

Ye Wen sighed, regret clear in his tone, while Dugu Bo shared his frustration. Though a potential solution for Yan had been found, he himself was still left wanting.

Seeing Dugu Bo's disappointment, Ye Wen mumbled, seemingly to himself, "If only we had that herb... Even a sample would allow me to study its properties and create something similar. Senior Dugu might truly have a chance."

"What was that?" Dugu Bo perked up, not quite hearing the name of the herb but sensing the possibility of hope.

Ye Wen scratched his head sheepishly. "Forgive me, Senior. It was a passing thought. I've read about a few extraordinary plants—legendary, really. They're said to have miraculous properties that could cleanse or suppress even the strongest toxins. But these herbs are probably just myths, which is why I hesitated to mention them."

"Tell me more about these 'mythical' herbs," Dugu Bo said, his interest now fully piqued. "Where did you find records of such plants? Could I see this book?"

Nodding, Ye Wen retrieved a small booklet from his storage tool. "I found a rundown, older text at a market stand a few years back. The content seemed fantastical, but the details were very precise, so I copied it down. Someday, I thought, I might encounter one of these herbs myself."

Handing the notes over, Ye Wen projected the image of a curious youth, his eyes gleaming with the dreams of discovery. Dugu Bo could relate, having once been a young dreamer himself.

Glancing over Ye Wen's notes, Dugu Bo marveled at the descriptions. Though skeptical, he understood that Ye Wen, in his youth, might not see these herbs as merely fictional. To him, they symbolized a potential cure—no matter how slim the chance. Dugu Bo's spirit was subtly moved, seeing a flicker of his younger self in this young man.

Chapter 755: Dugu Bo, Part Six

"Let me have a look," Dugu Bo demanded naturally, reaching for the booklet in Ye Wen's hands.

Ye Wen handed it over without hesitation. As Dugu Bo flipped through the pages, his initial expression of hope quickly turned to disappointment, with his brows furrowing slightly. The booklet was clearly incomplete.

Of course, Ye Wen had intentionally left out some key information—after all, he wasn't here to share everything for free, especially after risking so much to get this far. Ye Wen's goal was more than goodwill; he was looking to benefit as well. Yet, he had been careful to include some descriptions of minor celestial herbs, such as the Narcissus Jade Flesh Bone, which could nourish meridians and boost innate spirit power and cultivation speed, the Golden-Jade Chrysanthemum to enhance physical strength, and the Nine-Grade Purple Zhi for stabilizing core vitality. However, he deliberately omitted herbs like the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, which could address the Jade Phosphor Serpent's toxin, and the Earth Dragon Gold Melon, which could directly evolve the Jade Phosphor Serpent spirit.

When Dugu Bo spotted the Golden-Jade Chrysanthemum—similar to his old nemesis Chrysanthemum Douluo's martial spirit—his eyes widened in surprise. He'd previously dismissed this plant as merely decorative, much like Chrysanthemum Douluo's spirit. Who would have thought it was actually a powerful herb that could strengthen the body? Though the idea of "indestructibility" in the description seemed exaggerated, that didn't matter. Dugu Bo realized that with the right approach, this herb could help his granddaughter Yan rid herself of her own poison complications.

Just as he was about to become fully optimistic, Dugu Bo tempered his emotions and began to consider matters carefully. Although his hidden garden contained many of these herbs, he wondered if they truly possessed the miraculous properties described.

Sensing his hesitation, Ye Wen spoke up, "Senior, do you perhaps have a lead on these herbs? If you're concerned about the effects mentioned in the booklet, you could allow me to inspect them first. My martial spirit has unique properties that let me assess the qualities of items, specifically how they interact with the human body. This is the foundation of my success in the medicinal business—please rest assured."

Dugu Bo's curiosity was piqued, and his attention shifted fully to Ye Wen's sincere expression, which struck a nerve.

"A pure and earnest look indeed," Dugu Bo thought to himself, noting that, despite not being a healing spirit master, this young man had dedicated himself to the art of healing.

After a moment of contemplation, he made up his mind, almost muttering to himself, "Well, well...who would've thought that at my age, I'd still have this kind of notion?"

Then, turning to Ye Wen, he asked, "Would you be willing to become my disciple?"

Ye Wen was momentarily stunned. "Uh...what?" he blurted.

Dugu Bo chuckled at the young man's surprise. "I see great potential in you, as well as a passion for the art of healing that I admire. I'd like to take you on as my disciple. What do you say?"

Ye Wen quickly gathered himself, realizing that any hesitation would be disrespectful toward a Titled Douluo. Bowing deeply, he responded, "Honored Teacher, I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. Please accept my respects."

This straightforward and respectful response delighted Dugu Bo. Unlike Tang San's grandiose "A teacher for a day, a father for life" philosophy, Ye Wen adopted the understated but sincere custom of the Douluo Continent, which suited Dugu Bo's personality well.

From a pragmatic standpoint, Ye Wen knew this was a golden opportunity. Regardless of how he'd seen Dugu Bo portrayed in novels, the man was the only Titled Douluo in Heaven Dou, fiercely loyal and protective of his own. Refusing such a powerful backer would be foolish. Furthermore, formally apprenticing under Dugu Bo meant cutting off Tang San's future access to Dugu Bo's hidden herb garden, a strategic advantage in itself.

Dugu Bo's satisfaction was clear, and he beamed with approval. "Good! Good! Good!" he declared, repeating his praise three times before pulling out a storage soul tool and handing it to Ye Wen.

"Since you've formally become my disciple, I must give you something to commemorate it. This storage tool contains fifty thousand gold soul coins. Consider it my welcoming gift to you," he said warmly.

Ye Wen accepted it gratefully, offering another bow. Just as he was about to suggest they inspect the herbs together, Dugu Bo preempted him.

"Let's leave it here for today. You can stay here at my estate. Tomorrow, once I've made some arrangements for Yan, we can discuss the herbs," Dugu Bo instructed.

Surprised, Ye Wen held back his enthusiasm and followed the servant, Ah Fu, out of the hall.

As soon as he left, Dugu Bo moved to the back of the hall, where he spotted his granddaughter, Dugu Yan, hiding behind a wall, having eavesdropped on the conversation.

Following her successful treatment, Dugu Yan had awakened to find herself at home, and her innate physical resilience as a beast spirit master had sped up her recovery. Hearing voices, she hadn't interrupted but had waited quietly outside, only to overhear her grandfather's hidden struggles with his own poison.

But did Dugu Bo, a Titled Douluo, not sense his granddaughter's presence while she listened?

Of course, he knew she was there. Dugu Bo had long realized that relying solely on the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to delay his own poison was a temporary fix at best. His granddaughter's recent ordeal had reinforced the need to prepare her for the harsh realities of the world. Without him, how would she survive?

It was well known that the Dugu clan's inherited poison complications could affect their offspring. What respectable family would willingly wed their son to someone whose lineage carried such toxicity? Although Dugu Yan might find a spouse willing to marry into her family, the issue of hereditary poison made her marriage prospects awkward, similar to that of a princess whose dowry carried the risk of death.

Chapter 756: Dugu Bo, Part Seven

While Dugu Yan's inherited poison might be a burden to some, many power-hungry men would still eagerly pursue a wife backed by a Titled Douluo. But Dugu Yan had no interest in men blinded by ambition and wealth, especially here on the "Continent of Love"! She wanted nothing to do with those who would easily cheat or betray her, motivated only by money or power.

Then, the handsome, socially compatible Yu Tianheng appeared! Dugu Yan suspected that he, too, valued her family background, but he was still a far better option than the lecherous types she avoided. So, she decided to give Yu Tianheng a chance, and they became a couple. Dugu Yan was acutely aware that her grandfather was the true pillar of her relationship, and now, hearing that Dugu Bo himself suffered from the same toxin in his martial spirit, she felt overwhelmed and helpless.

As she cried, Dugu Yan heard her grandfather's familiar footsteps approaching. Hastily wiping her tears, she managed a shaky, "Grandfather…"

Seeing his beautiful granddaughter in such distress, Dugu Bo's heart ached. Despite her mature, confident appearance, she would always be his precious little granddaughter. Yet, he also sighed internally—Dugu Yan was far too unguarded. He had shielded the area with his spirit power so no sound would escape, sparing him the embarrassment, but she needed to learn caution.

Taking her by the hand, Dugu Bo led Dugu Yan back to her room, saying, "Yan'er, now that you know about my condition, you can see why you don't need to worry. At least until you're strong enough on your own, I'll be fine. Besides, you saw that young man yesterday; he's very knowledgeable in healing. He may even be able to break our family's curse someday."

Dugu Yan's sobs quieted, though her enchanting eyes were still slightly red, evoking a sense of tender vulnerability. As she thought of Ye Wen's refined manner and warm voice, her heart unexpectedly skipped a beat.

She wasn't entirely sure what she felt, but with her grandfather safe, that was all she needed. "Grandfather, I'm glad to hear that, but you must also take care of yourself," she said gently.

For Dugu Bo, a once-lonely old man, nothing in the world was more comforting than his sweet granddaughter's concern. After a while, though, his expression turned serious as he hesitated before finally saying, "Yan'er, I haven't said much about this before, but I think it's time you considered your relationship carefully. You know as well as I do that Yu Tianheng isn't entirely sincere in his feelings for you. You need to choose your future partner wisely—someone who truly loves you, not someone using you for other purposes."

Dugu Bo's gaze grew distant, recalling his own tragic past. People only knew him as unpredictable and ruthless, but how many had seen the pain of his life? Losing his wife early, his son in midlife, and almost his only granddaughter…if not for Ye Wen's intervention, he would have lost everyone. In the face of such torment, any man would lose his grip on sanity.

Although Dugu Yan had been unconscious due to the poison, she had been vaguely aware of who was present around her—and Yu Tianheng had been noticeably absent. She had tried to excuse his absence, reasoning there may have been factors she didn't understand, but even so, she couldn't help but feel differently about him.

Dugu Bo then called for the servants to care for her; though he had suppressed the toxins, Dugu Yan's body was still physically weakened and needed proper care.

After leaving her room, Dugu Bo's expression turned frosty. "Shrek...huh," he murmured, his voice laced with lethal intent. After losing his son, Dugu Bo had vowed never to let anyone harm Dugu Yan again, yet Shrek had nearly killed her with poison. Regardless of whether it was an accident or a duel, he had already sentenced Shrek Academy to death in his mind. The idea of "bullying the weak" was meaningless to Dugu Bo—he had long since abandoned concerns about appearances.

Although he lacked a formal organization or intelligence network, Dugu Bo had the entire Heaven Dou Empire at his disposal. A simple request to Prince Xue Xing, and countless nobles would line up to provide him with information. However, as Dugu Bo reviewed the latest intelligence on Shrek Academy, his expression grew complicated.

The teachers at Shrek Academy—whether they called themselves the "Golden Iron Triangle" or the "Unmovable King"—meant little to him. If they weren't Titled Douluo, they were no more than chickens before him. However…

Dugu Bo's gaze darkened as he muttered, "Seven Treasures Glazed Tile Clan and a Star Luo prince...how did such a lowly academy attract figures this troublesome?" Then, a sinister smirk crept onto his face. There was no need to trouble those with significant backgrounds; he would focus on a different target—Tang San, the Blue Silver Grass "trash." As for the fact that Tang San was Yu Xiaogang's disciple? Hah, let the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon clan try him if they dared; Dugu Bo would gladly demonstrate the meaning of "Poison Douluo."

Yet revenge against Shrek was secondary; his priority was Dugu Yan's health. At nearly eighty years old, Dugu Bo had long made peace with his mortality. Now, his only true concern was his granddaughter.

The next morning, after breakfast, Dugu Bo introduced Dugu Yan to Ye Wen, who respectfully greeted her as "Senior Sister." Although Dugu Yan blushed at being addressed this way, Ye Wen's mind was already consumed with thoughts of the celestial herbs he hoped to find.

When Dugu Bo flew them both through the air, firmly gripping Ye Wen by the back of the neck, Ye Wen thought that traveling on "Flender Airlines" had been bad, but this was far worse.

Chapter 757: Dugu Bo, Part Eight

By the time Ye Wen gathered his thoughts, he found himself standing in a vast valley. Everywhere he looked, there were rare plants, and the air was filled with a peculiar blend of sulfur and herbal aromas. Although the smell was unusual, it wasn't unpleasant.

"Ye Wen, we've arrived," Dugu Bo stated calmly.

Ye Wen snapped out of his daze and began eagerly observing his surroundings. For a medical student like him, there was nothing more tempting than this collection of precious herbs that seemed like they were picked by immortals themselves!

Dugu Bo then gestured forward, saying, "Come with me."

Ye Wen had an inkling of Dugu Bo's intentions, and soon enough, his guess was confirmed as Dugu Bo led him to an enormous chrysanthemum—the famed Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum.

"Let's start by testing this herb's medicinal properties, Ye Wen," Dugu Bo said, his eyes full of expectation.

Dugu Bo knew his condition well; if he had met someone like Ye Wen earlier, perhaps his own poison could have been treated with the methods intended for Dugu Yan. However, his toxin had now fused deeply with his body, making any attempt to remove it risky—if the poison was extracted, he might perish as well. Now, his main focus was on helping Dugu Yan avoid the same fate.

As Dugu Bo reached to pick the Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum, having already read in Ye Wen's herb manual that it required no special harvesting technique, Ye Wen stopped him.

Ye Wen knew that this plant hadn't yet reached its full maturity. Only at the hundred-thousand-year mark would it develop self-awareness and reach its complete form. Harvesting it prematurely would halt its growth and prevent it from reaching its true potential, causing it to be as wasted as in the original story, where its mature form was never realized.

After all, if a plant still photosynthesizes and undergoes growth processes, then it, like any other living organism, will periodically renew itself. This realization led Ye Wen to a new insight: the medicinal properties of this plant could be extracted periodically without permanently harvesting it. In the later timeline, during the events of Peerless Tang Sect, there were indeed records of plants like these that could have parts harvested without harming the main plant.

"What's wrong, Ye Wen?" Dugu Bo asked, sensing Ye Wen's hesitation.

Ye Wen, eager to build trust with Dugu Bo, answered candidly, "Teacher, while this Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum can be picked and consumed, many medicinal plants can yield parts with healing properties without harming the whole. You would know this as a master of poisons."

Dugu Bo, who had transplanted many medicinal herbs into this Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well himself, nodded in agreement, pondering Ye Wen's point. He had always sought ways to mitigate his and Dugu Yan's condition, given that their toxin was like a ticking time bomb.

Seeing that Dugu Bo was listening closely, Ye Wen continued, "If this herb really has the properties described in my notes, it could provide Dugu Yan with lasting resistance against her poison. But Teacher, you also know how long it takes for this herb to reach maturity, even in a special environment like this. Keeping it intact ensures that its properties will remain available for future generations in your family."

Hearing this, Dugu Bo's eyes glistened with gratitude. He thought to himself how right he was in accepting Ye Wen as his disciple. Not only did Ye Wen possess extraordinary talent, but he was thoughtful and far-sighted, showing true care and insight.

With a warm smile, Dugu Bo responded, "You're considerate, Ye Wen. And if we don't harvest it, will that affect your ability to analyze it?"

Ye Wen shook his head, then summoned his Na Na spirit. Summoning-type spirits were rare, but Dugu Bo wasn't entirely unfamiliar with them. Tian Dou Royal Academy had an Elder with a Black Enchantress spirit, also of the summoning type. Seeing Ye Wen's progress at such a young age only heightened Dugu Bo's sense of his disciple's potential.

Under Ye Wen's guidance, Na Na approached the Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum and swallowed it whole. Closing his eyes, Ye Wen channeled his mental energy into his spirit, focusing on the herb's medicinal effects.

While he already knew the herb's abilities, he couldn't help but marvel at the invigorating, blood-fortifying sensation that Na Na was feeding back to him. The chrysanthemum's strength lay not in amplifying spirit power but in reinforcing one's physique and enhancing blood circulation, the very source of its "diamond-like indestructibility."

After completing his analysis, Ye Wen began considering how best to extract the medicinal essence. Traditionally, the method involved first consuming the flower's center and then the petals, leaving the stem and roots untouched. With this in mind, Ye Wen decided to try harvesting just a few petals to see if the plant would regrow.

But as this thought crossed his mind, Ye Wen suddenly felt a tinge of fear through his Na Na spirit. Fear?

The feeling wasn't coming from Na Na, but from the Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum itself! The faint consciousness of the plant was resisting the idea, an instinctual response it seemed to the threat of losing a part of itself.

Intrigued by this reaction, Ye Wen mused that the herb's fear could lead to an alternative, less invasive way to tap into its medicinal power.

Chapter 758: Dugu Bo, Part Nine

Ye Wen slowly synchronized his spirit with Na Na, projecting a mental image of intense desire toward the Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum, hinting at his wish to consume it entirely. The chrysanthemum quivered in sheer terror, its petals trembling as it detected Ye Wen's hungry intentions.

However, Ye Wen didn't actually consume it. Instead, he continued to emanate waves of mental desire for the flower, expressing an endless hunger. The poor chrysanthemum, bound to the earth as a plant, could neither flee nor resist. It was utterly overwhelmed.

If this chrysanthemum had evolved to the ten-thousand-year spirit beast level and learned human language, it would surely be cursing right now. Unable to escape, fight back, or even reason, the Strange Velvet Sky-reaching Chrysanthemum was left with no choice but to surrender, resigning itself to whatever might come. In its limited wisdom, it resolved that if death was inevitable, it would eventually be reborn in another form.

Once Ye Wen noticed the flower wilting in hopeless resignation, he knew it was time. He changed his mental projection from one of pure greed to one of uncertainty, subtly communicating that he was torn—desiring the herb's medicinal benefits but reluctant to harm it.

Being a plant, it took the chrysanthemum a long while to process this new feeling, but it eventually grasped the meaning of Ye Wen's shift. "Does this mean I might not have to die?"

With a faint sense of relief, the flower clung to this hope, though it was still wary. While it had nearly accepted death, the will to live was strong in any creature. Finally, it seemed to arrive at a solution, releasing a wave of fragrance, one so potent that even Na Na couldn't contain it.

Dugu Bo, who had been waiting nearby, perked up instantly, recognizing the familiar scent. "Did it work?" he asked, his face brightening.

Ye Wen, however, wasn't satisfied and projected a signal of dissatisfaction with the small amount of essence the chrysanthemum had released. The flower hesitated, sensing it was on the right track but that its efforts were insufficient. So, it began to secrete a thicker, fragrant sap from its petals, guided by Ye Wen's control.

At last, once the flower had given nearly all it could without damage, Ye Wen ended his mental coaxing, and Na Na released the exhausted plant from its hold. Dugu Bo, now at Ye Wen's side, observed the collected essence with delight, exclaiming, "It worked!"

Ye Wen nodded, his expression reserved. "I'm glad to be of service."

He then took out a jade vial, prepared in advance, and stored the essence safely inside. "Teacher, though this liquid contains the chrysanthemum's medicinal properties, it's not as potent as consuming the whole herb directly. It'd be best if we don't wait too long and let Sister Dugu Yan take it right away."

Dugu Bo agreed, nodding seriously. The juice's freshness was key, and he feared it might spoil quickly. Without another word, he grabbed the vial and, before Ye Wen could react, vanished on the spot.

Ye Wen let out a sigh, half-amused. He understood his teacher's urgency but couldn't help muttering, "Couldn't he have at least brought me back? Guess he forgot about me entirely."

He shrugged off the minor annoyance and looked around, stretching out as he scanned the lush, unguarded medicinal garden before him.

"Alright then… jackpot!" he chuckled to himself, rubbing his hands eagerly. "All these little treasures—let's see what we have here!"

As Dugu Bo's personal disciple, Ye Wen figured he was entitled to a few herbs—without causing any damage, of course. He picked only small amounts, carefully ensuring he didn't harm the original plants, especially the more valuable ones. As for the rarest herbs, Ye Wen decided it was best to wait. Dugu Bo might not mind some light harvesting, but taking too much too soon could be risky.

Gradually, his foraging brought him to the very heart of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Standing at the edge of the magical pool, he could feel the potent dual forces of ice and fire emanating from it, filling the air with a rare intensity.

"What an awe-inspiring place," he murmured, feeling the power that once belonged to ancient beings. "Even millennia after they perished, the aura left by those divine beings could still shake the earth. Just what would it be like to stand before something that powerful?"

Though curious, he chose not to venture too close. Instead, he cast a glance at the Burning Apricot and the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass, then turned to continue his exploration.

Meanwhile, at Dugu Bo's estate—

Dugu Bo arrived in time to hand Dugu Yan the vial of essence from the chrysanthemum. Following his instructions, she took it in one go. Without needing further prompting, she immediately sat down cross-legged and began refining the liquid's essence.

Soon, her skin flushed, her muscles began to tense and swell, and a fine layer of white hair sprouted across her body—a sign of the chrysanthemum's powerful effects. Dugu Bo remained calm, reassured by what he knew from the herb's descriptions in Ye Wen's manual.

The strengthening effect was formidable, though it came with intense discomfort, as if every part of her body was being stretched and fortified. But Dugu Yan, aware of the dangers that hung over both her and her grandfather, clenched her jaw and persevered in silence, enduring the pain with resolve.

Eventually, the white hairs receded, and her form returned to normal. Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes, and Dugu Bo immediately asked, "Yan Yan, how do you feel?"

She flexed her fists, a look of amazement crossing her face. Though a control-type beast soul master, she had never possessed a particularly strong physique. Now, she felt as though she could crush a tree with a single blow.

"It's incredible," she murmured, still dazed by the sudden transformation.

Chapter 759: Dugu Bo, Part Ten

Dugu Yan took a moment to sense her body's new state. In the past, she often felt a slight weakness, but now she was bursting with energy, feeling more vibrant and alive than ever. This was the vitality a young woman under twenty should have.

"Grandpa, I feel amazing!" she said joyfully.

Dugu Bo beamed with satisfaction, though he couldn't shake his years of worry. To be certain, he personally checked her condition, his expertise with poisons making him highly attuned to even slight changes in her body. Almost immediately, he could tell that her strengthened physique had effectively suppressed the lingering venom of her martial spirit.

This confirmed Ye Wen's theory: a soul master's strengthened physique could indeed counteract the effects of their own poisonous martial spirit! For the first time in ages, Dugu Bo found himself unable to hide a genuine smile, his delight unmistakable.

Gently patting Dugu Yan's head, Dugu Bo said, "Yan Yan, you'll no longer suffer from the poison of your martial spirit. And you won't have to live in fear of it the way your father did." His eyes reddened slightly as he thought of his son, who had succumbed to the very poison that Dugu Yan had now overcome.

Overcome by emotion, Dugu Yan also felt tears welling up as she remembered the dark times following her father's death, right around when she first awakened her martial spirit. But now, that nightmare had come to an end, and the two of them shared a quiet embrace, comforting each other.

Initially, it was Dugu Bo who felt emotional, but soon he found himself comforting his granddaughter, who had become even more overwhelmed. Eventually, Dugu Yan calmed down, though Dugu Bo's expression took on a thoughtful gleam.

Although Ye Wen's bloodletting method couldn't fully cure his poison, it did offer a way to mitigate his symptoms. His own mastery over poisons would allow him to apply Ye Wen's techniques to relieve some of his own discomfort.

Lifespan aside, Dugu Bo, as a Title Douluo, had a life expectancy of at least 300 years. Even if he lost some time due to the treatment, he was confident that as long as the poison didn't erupt violently, he could easily survive another 50 or 60 years—enough time for a prodigy to reach Title Douluo level.

"Yan Yan, do you really care for that boy, Yu Tianheng?" Dugu Bo asked suddenly.

Dugu Yan's cheeks reddened slightly at her grandfather's direct question about her love life, but she quickly shook her head. Yu Tianheng was handsome, but she'd seen plenty of handsome men in her life. Her relationship with him was mainly one of convenience, and Dugu Bo, knowing her condition, had tolerated it only to ensure she'd have someone to rely on in the future.

But now, after learning that Yu Tianheng hadn't been there for her during her recovery, her previously favorable impression of him had faded.

Seeing Dugu Yan's response, Dugu Bo grinned. "If you don't really like him, then let's find someone else for you. What do you think of Ye Wen?"

Her newly introduced junior disciple had just saved her life, and now her grandfather was suggesting him as a match! Dugu Yan's heart raced as she remembered Ye Wen's warm smile and gentle demeanor, and she found herself unable to refuse outright.

Knowing his granddaughter well, Dugu Bo saw the flicker of interest in her expression and laughed heartily. Before she could respond, he continued, "If you think Ye Wen is a good match, I'll help arrange things. As for that Yu kid—should he try to bother you again, just tell him your grandpa said no. Let's see if he dares pester you after that."

Shocked by her grandfather's bluntness, Dugu Yan stammered, "G-Grandpa, isn't this a bit hasty? I mean, we just met yesterday! And besides, Ye Wen's only thirteen or fourteen. I'm nearly twenty. Isn't that a bit much of an age gap?"

Dugu Bo raised an amused brow. Her objections only confirmed her budding interest in Ye Wen. "What's wrong with that? You're a beauty, and if Ye Wen's lucky enough to have you, he should be thanking his stars! As for age, nonsense! Ever heard the saying, 'An older wife brings gold'? Well, you're nearly seven years his senior—that's more than two bags of gold right there. It's a jackpot for him!"

Caught off guard by her grandfather's humor, Dugu Yan grew flustered and threw a light punch at him. Though her strength had grown, Dugu Bo laughed heartily, happy to see his granddaughter smiling and playful.

After their moment of banter, Dugu Yan turned serious. "But Grandpa, love shouldn't be forced. What if you pressure Ye Wen into this, and he ends up resenting us? When he grows stronger in the future, would he hold a grudge against us?"

Dugu Bo paused, silently considering her words. In the long years he had been the only Title Douluo in Heaven Dou, he realized he might have become somewhat conceited.

To him, Ye Wen's progress by his early teens suggested he was certain to reach Title Douluo level someday. And if he forced this talented young man into something he didn't want, the boy might very well end up resenting him. Losing such a relationship would be foolish.

He put aside his pride and carefully thought over his relationship with Ye Wen, then finally said, "You're right, Yan Yan. But a man like Ye Wen, loyal, noble, and talented, is a rare find. If you don't act, you might never meet another man like him in your lifetime."

Then, with a softer tone, he advised, "So, my suggestion is that while Ye Wen is learning under me, you should find ways to spend time together and strengthen your bond. If you both develop mutual feelings, then that's wonderful! And if not, you'll at least have a trusted junior brother looking out for you. With Ye Wen around, I can rest easy."

As Dugu Bo praised Ye Wen's virtues, Dugu Yan recalled the image of him saving her life, her gaze becoming resolute.

"So, I just have to win him over, right? Well, here goes! I've had plenty of admirers before—now it's my turn to go after someone. How exciting!"

Chapter 760: Dugu Bo, Part Eleven

At this moment, Ye Wen was still at the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, busily concocting potent pills from the precious herbs around him, entirely unaware that a certain grandfather-granddaughter pair had begun eyeing him for quite different intentions. Ye Wen was fully absorbed in his alchemy. Finally finishing his work, he looked up at the sky and noticed the darkening dusk.

"Huh... In the original story, Dai Mubai didn't take this long to absorb the medicinal power of the Chrysanthemum, right? Did they get so excited that they forgot about me?" he wondered aloud. If so, he sighed, it looked like he'd be camping out here for the night.

Though he was tempted to get closer to the core of the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, Ye Wen wisely refrained. As a mere 34th-level Soul Elder, he was still very much at the mercy of these potent elements. Tang San, after all, had only managed to stay long-term near the well due to Dugu Bo's protective dan bead, which helped neutralize the extreme forces at play here. Otherwise, even Tang San would have perished from the intense elemental energy.

Recalling that Dugu Bo's dan bead also accelerated training, Ye Wen thought briefly about asking for it, but the idea of a pill formed from the toxins of an old man's stomach was, frankly, off-putting. Shaking his head, he focused on his freshly crafted medicinal pills, inspecting them one last time before packing them away—when an unexpected voice sounded behind him.

"Ye Wen, what kind of pills are you making here?"

Startled, Ye Wen nearly dropped everything. Luckily, the pills hit the sturdy rock, sparing them from being contaminated by dirt. He turned to see Dugu Bo watching him with an uncharacteristically good-humored grin.

Dugu Bo had indeed noticed signs of herb-picking throughout his garden, but since it was his own disciple using them—and without reckless damage—he wasn't particularly bothered. Amused by Ye Wen's reaction, he chuckled.

Ye Wen rolled his eyes. "Teacher, don't you know it's dangerous to sneak up on people like that? Can't you at least make some noise when you walk?"

Dugu Bo laughed, entirely unbothered. "What are you talking about? I fly."

Ye Wen sighed and continued gathering his medicines. Dugu Bo's cheery mood suggested that Dugu Yan's issue had been resolved, and that lifted Ye Wen's spirits, too. To mark the occasion, he handed over several pill bottles to Dugu Bo.

Surprised, Dugu Bo asked, "Are these for me? What do they do?"

Ye Wen shook his head. "They're not for you, Teacher. These are for Senior Sister. While the Chrysanthemum strengthened her vitality, the bloodletting treatment still left her a bit weakened, so she'll need some recovery."

Dugu Bo's surprise quickly turned to admiration. To be so thoughtful on his first day as a disciple! Ye Wen, however, was simply performing his duty as a healer, something Dugu Bo deeply respected. He found it oddly fitting that he, a figure known for wielding poison, had a disciple dedicated to healing others.

Although it was feasible to stay near the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, making a new disciple camp out was a line Dugu Bo couldn't cross. Naturally, he had returned to escort Ye Wen back to his residence.

Dugu Bo's focus wasn't on rushing Ye Wen for a cure to his poison. Instead, he was more interested in allowing Ye Wen and Dugu Yan to spend time together. Ye Wen was promising, trustworthy, and clearly a good influence. Though Dugu Bo's thoughts turned briefly to Ye Wen's two existing fiancées, he shrugged it off. This was Douluo Continent—many noblemen and powerful figures had multiple spouses.

After all, even a model family man like Ning Fengzhi had a harem beyond Ning Rongrong's mother. There was no way he'd spend tens of thousands of gold soul coins on a slave girl out of pure charity, contrary to public appearances. If that were the case, he wouldn't haggle with Tang San over hidden weapon prices.

Back at his mansion, Dugu Bo entertained the idea of Dugu Yan becoming Ye Wen's main wife. His status as Heaven Dou Empire's only Title Douluo would likely sway any objections. This thought brightened his mood considerably, for it meant Dugu Yan's future would be secure.

However, just as he was reveling in this notion, he remembered that Ye Wen had two fiancées. Did this mean Dugu Yan would have to play second fiddle? Absolutely not! He dismissed the thought. A mere child would never dare treat his granddaughter as a lesser partner.

He then whisked Ye Wen back to the mansion, intending to continue cultivating this talented young disciple.

Meanwhile, Ye Wen's gambit with Dugu Bo had stirred unease back at the Huo clan. Though Huo Yu'er had returned home as he had requested, she couldn't shake her growing worry. The more she thought about Ye Wen's behavior, the more it puzzled her. Recalling past hints and her intuition, she began to piece together his intentions.

"Grandmother, don't try to stop me—I'm going to Heaven Dou City!" she said urgently.

With Ye Wen's memories still missing, she thought, even with his outstanding talent, a direct confrontation with a Title Douluo was foolishly risky. After coming so far, she refused to risk losing him now. She would go to Heaven Dou City and stand by his side.
