Chapter 79 - Kuro's First Song

Summer heat wrapped around Yukihama like a lazy embrace.

The cicadas were relentless now, their chorus filling every pause in conversation. The town felt alive in a simple, ordinary way—children chasing each other with water guns, couples arguing over shaved ice flavors, old men playing shogi in the shade.

And for the first time in a long time—

There was no darkness hiding underneath.

The Stage He Almost Avoided

Kuro stood backstage at the small summer festival near the shopping district, staring at his hands.

They were shaking.

Not because of mirrors.

Not because of spirals.

Not because of monsters made of glass.

Just… because he was about to sing.

Renji leaned against a stack of speakers, arms crossed.

> "You fought alternate versions of yourself," he said calmly.

"You can handle a microphone."

Kuro shot him a look. "Those alternate versions didn't judge my pitch."

Aoi giggled from behind him, adjusting the strap on her camera. "You'll be fine. And if you mess up, I'll paint it as 'abstract performance anxiety.'"

Kuro groaned. "You two are the worst."

But his lips twitched upward.

The Song He Wrote

The band was small—just a few students and borrowed instruments—but tonight was special. It was the first time Kuro had written something of his own.

The title was simple:

"Forward."

When his name was called, he stepped onto the makeshift stage under strings of warm festival lights. The crowd wasn't huge—but it was real.

His hands steadied as he gripped the mic.

He glanced once at Renji and Aoi in the crowd.

They nodded.

He began.

---

Lyrics Between the Lines

The first chords were soft—gentle guitar and a slow drumbeat.

Then Kuro sang.

His voice wasn't perfect. It cracked once, wavered slightly—but it was honest.

The lyrics spoke of broken glass under bare feet.

Of running through looping hallways.

Of drowning in reflections that weren't yours.

But also—

Of standing back up.

Of choosing tomorrow.

Of hands reaching through the dark.

Renji felt his throat tighten.

Aoi's eyes shimmered behind her camera lens.

No one else in the crowd understood what the metaphors truly meant.

But they did.

And that was enough.

---

Applause That Felt Real

When the last note faded, there was a brief silence.

Then applause.

Loud. Warm. Uncomplicated.

Kuro stood there, stunned for a moment.

No spirals opened in the sky.

No mirrors cracked.

No past tried to swallow him.

Just clapping.

Just cheers.

Just people appreciating a song.

He stepped offstage, dazed.

Renji grabbed him by the shoulders. "See? No cosmic horror required."

Aoi hugged him before he could protest. "You sounded amazing."

Kuro rolled his eyes, but his smile didn't fade.

> "I think," he admitted quietly, "this is the first time I've done something without looking over my shoulder."

---

A New Kind of Loop

Later, as fireworks bloomed over Yukihama, the three of them stood together in the crowd.

The explosions reflected in their eyes—not twisted, not fractured—just light.

Renji spoke softly:

> "Maybe this is the only loop we keep."

Aoi tilted her head. "What do you mean?"

He smiled.

> "Wake up. Live. Laugh. Repeat."

Kuro snorted. "That's not a loop. That's just life."

Renji looked up at the sky.

> "Exactly."
