Chapter 384 - Chapter 384

The battle was short but brutal. Everyone was tired, though mostly because it was nighttime.

"Jack!" Milla shouted across the room as Jack the hunter appeared from the stairs. He was missing a large chunk of his left arm, it had been hastily wrapped and bandaged and clearly he had a stimpack administered, he was not in great shape but he was very much alive, which is more than some could say.

As Milla ran over she immediately brought Jack into a tight hug embracing him with all her might. Jack, however, did not hug her back, instead he was covering his eyes with his good arm. Adam was not close enough to overhear everything but it was a fair assumption to think he was crying.

"Henderson he-" Jack began before he choked the words back. Clearly more worried about his fallen friend than his own injury. Milla pulled back from the hug and looked shocked. She looked distraught and crestfallen but did not cry, putting a hand on Jack's good arm, she did not say anything but the warmth was conveyed through the gesture.

"I was fighting next to him one moment and then next he-he…" Jack said before he began to break down into tears. Milla brought him back into a hug, comforting him as best she could as they mourned.

"Adam." Deccanus said as he approached, breaking him from watching the scene before him.

"Yes, what is it, Deccanus? Are you okay?"

"Yes, I am fine. Thank you for your concern. However I think it best we do not let our guards down just yet. If you will permit me I shall take our robotic companions on a full patrol of the facility to ensure the building is secure." Adam nodded.

"Diligent. Though don't forget to rest yourself after. There is no need to overexert yourself."

"I am Le-" Deccanus began, perhaps going to respond with something about the legion but stopped himself short. "I… Thank you for your words of wisdom, but I shall be fine. When the patrol is over I shall rest." Deccanus then looked behind him to see Mira limping a bit as she approached, nodded to her and then turned back to Adam. "I shall let her explain the details of the operation, I will get to work." He said before rounding up all the robots, minus Eve, and leading them on an expedition around the facility.

"Are you okay Mira?" Adam asked as he watched her limp over.

"Yeah I'm fine." She said, stopping in front of Adam and squeezing her left thigh. "Got shot but I've had worse. It's just sore."

"You apply a stimpack?"

"Yes Adam. I know basic first aid." She said with a roll of her eyes, annoyed, but then sighed and let it go. "Sorry, I'm just a bit cranky."

"No, it's okay. I get it, getting shot is not fun."

"You are telling me." She said before she set herself down on a box with a bit of a huff. "It'll fade with time. Just need to rest it for a while." Adam looked down at her leg and saw the bullet hole, it had ripped right through her stealth suit. Not surprising, honestly. The stealthsuit was a form fitting clothlike armor, it was bullet resistant and stab proof, but it was not real combat armor, it was meant for stealth, hence the name. It probably slowed the bullet down but there was still an exit wound so likely not enough. Better that than having the bullet still inside her leg, otherwise they would need Dr. Tott to do surgery when they get back home.

"Is the uh… suit going to be okay?" Adam asked, pulling his eyes from her leg to her face again, so as not to be rude.

"Well…" She said as she ran her hand over the air above where she was shot, not touching the wound directly to avoid the pain that would follow. "It's not like the suit is made of normal cloth. However I've used this thing for almost as long as I have been in the Circle of Steel, I know how to repair it. It just takes some special parts. I got spare patches back home in the Vault-" She said before cutting herself off seemingly caught off guard by something she said. Adam didn't catch it though, there was no emphasis anywhere so he was unsure what she had caught herself saying. Though the blush and embarrassed head turn spoke wonders about how she was feeling about it.

"You okay?" Adam asked softly.

"Yeah… I'll be fine…" She said as she shook off her blush and then relaxed a bit before trying to move her leg, wincing and then deciding it was better to leave it alone. "Just don't ask me into any big fights for the rest of the night." She joked.

"Don't worry, I plan to get a lot of sleep tonight If I can."

"Good, because that's exactly what I intend to do." She laughed softly before motioning with her head to one of the doors in the back corner. "That's a sort of barracks as far as I could tell when I peaked in earlier. Enough beds for everyone here."

"Though I'm not a fan of sleeping on another man's bed, beggars can't be choosers." Adam joked.

"You think you got it bad? Think about me? They shot me and now I gotta use their beds?" She grinned, clearly joking back.

"Perks of the job." Adam joked softly. "Need a hand getting to bed?" He offered.

"What? You going to carry me like a princess from one of those old stories?"

"Well…" Adam said with a contemplative tone, considering how he would transport her to the bed if needed. After a half moment of contemplation, he realized that he would likely do exactly that.

"No thanks." Mira said as she helped herself up, using the sheathed Chinese officer's sword as a crutch to take weight off her bad leg. "I'm a big strong girl. I don't like feeling emasculated." She then began to walk, slowly, on her own towards the door to take a bed for herself for the night.

"I don't mind being your princess if you need one for the night, Handsome~" Eve teased from half the room away.
