The two slipped out of the fallout shelter without being noticed, luckily, and then headed out towards the gate. There was the same woman standing on guard at the gate as last time, it was still open, which was interesting, but it was clear they would not be leaving without being noticed.
"Oh, you two are leaving so soon?" She asked, surprisingly recognizing Adam and Mira from earlier. Did this woman even sleep? It was past midnight and she was on guard duty when they got here.
"We came for the sermon." Mira said with a practiced smile. "The sermon was really very moving, however there are the unclean we need to try to save still wandering around. We only left our holy mission to return for a bit. The inspiring words of the sermon have reinvigorated our spirits and we are once more ready to face our destiny… isn't that right, Dear?" Mira said as she took Adam's hand in hers, holding it as if they were lovers. Adam was caught off guard by this sudden move on her part but recovered quickly.
"Yes. We have… much work to do." Adam said, not nearly as smoothly as Mira playing the role he was tasked with. The woman seemed to buy it however, likely no thanks to Adam. As she put a hand on her heart.
"Aw, it is always wonderful to see such devotion from our faithful to our lord and each other. Keep each other close, you hear? The time is coming, soon our long held wish shall come true. Let your faith keep you strong, blessings be with you."
"Blessings be with you as well." Mira said back with a soft bow and then, while still holding Adam's hand, the two of them strolled out of the settlement, in the middle of the night, with nothing but the moonlight to light their path.
The two remained silent for a bit as they walked, gaining more and more distance on the cultist compound before it was Adam who finally spoke up.
"How long do you think we have before-"
"They notice? Depends how often they check downstairs. But if I were to guess we have a few hours at least." Adam nodded.
"Then let's get as much distance as we can in those few hours…" Adam said before sighing and looking at Mira. "I can go all night but are you-"
"I will be fine." Mira said sternly with a forceful tone, as if she was trying to convince herself of that, but Adam decided not to push, he let the matter die.
"Alright, lets get some good distance, do our best to use the moonlight to our advantage, and then find somewhere hidden to sleep for a few hours before trying to get back to the APC." Mira nodded and then the two of them picked up the pace.
Traveling at night, with limited gear, and limited knowledge of where they were and where they were going was certainly not the smartest strategy Adam had ever employed. However since they had killed the two cultists they had to leave while they could. Any time spent delaying could risk outting them as the killers. Of course in another situation it could have been used to turn the cult against itself by patsying someone else and creating doubt among the people. However Adam was not the man to enact that sort of ploy, and if Mira was, she was not mentioning it. No, this was the best call, it was going to be a bit more dangerous until day hit and he was going to have to travel without much sleep today, even with all the traveling he did in the morning, but this was the smartest play.
Considering that the two were still deep in the territory of the Cult they didn't talk at all while moving. During the day it was to keep their identities as non cult members secret, now, it was to move unseen.
Eventually, after a few hours of careful and wordless travel the two of them decided they had made enough distance to catch up on a little sleep. So they found a third floor of a still standing building and found a little bit of sleep.
When they next woke up, a few more hours later, the sun had fully risen and they could hear the sounds of very distant gunfire. Perhaps it was narcissistic to think it was because of them but they were not about to stick around to find out so they grabbed their stuff and started moving again. Adam wished he could say that it was thanks to his army training he had been able to get enough sleep even despite the conditions they had been in last night, but that would be a lie.
The army had taught him a technique to fall asleep more or less on command anywhere anytime, but that does not turn fitful sleep into a restful one. Ultimately Adam's body was a bit sore and he was still a bit bleary eyed as they began their journey again. But his body was genetically enhanced, he could only imagine how much harder it was on Mira. Then again she was trained for this sort of thing, so maybe it didn't bother her? Though judging by her yawns he could only assume the opposite.
After enough time had passed the two of them began to feel more comfortable to begin talking again, not yet fully clear of the cult's territory but far enough out that they were not liable to be eavesdropped on. Besides, Adam had questions that he had been sitting on since they had fled he wanted answers to.
"Is it a good time to talk?" Adam asked, checking with Mira before he started a conversation.
"Sure, I think we have enough distance." She said with a soft nod.
"I wanted to continue the conversation from last night. What were you going to tell me? Who is The Master."
"The Master is an old enemy of the Brotherhood… no, it is an old enemy of Mankind. The Master very nearly destroyed the human race." She paused with a dark tone. "A hundred years ago he created the Super Mutant problem and waged war on Humanity."
