Harry Potter

The abandoned quarry sat in a natural depression about two miles from the Burrow, hidden from view by dense woodland and the rolling hills of Devon. Harry had never been here before, but Ginny had assured them it was perfect for what they needed—isolated, with steep rock walls that would contain sound, and far enough from any habitation that they wouldn't risk alarming anyone.

"This is brilliant," Hermione said as they emerged from the tree line, surveying the space. The quarry formed a rough bowl, perhaps fifty meters across, with sheer stone walls rising fifteen feet on most sides.

Harry stood at the edge of the quarry, looking down into the depression. His enhanced vision picked out details others might miss—the layers of sediment in the exposed rock face, the small cave entrance partially hidden by overgrown brambles, the old rusted equipment someone had abandoned decades ago.

"How did you know about this place?" Harry asked.

"Bill used to bring Charlie and me here when we were kids," Ginny replied. "Before it got completely overgrown. We'd pretend we were explorers discovering ancient ruins." She smiled at the memory. "Mum would've killed them if she'd known. Too dangerous, she would've said."

"It is rather steep," Hermione observed, peering over the edge with concern.

"Good thing Harry can jump like a mountain goat now," Ginny said. She turned to Harry. "Ready to make some noise?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," he said.

They made their way down into the quarry via a natural slope on the western side, carefully navigating loose stones and thick patches of bramble. Once at the bottom, Hermione immediately began organizing, pulling equipment from the bag Ginny had carried.

"I brought Dad's sound measuring devices," she explained, holding up what looked like a small silver box covered in dials. "Muggle technology, but it should give us baseline readings. And I modified my Quick-Quotes Quill to take dictation while we work."

"Of course you did," Harry said fondly.

Ginny had moved to the far side of the quarry, putting distance between herself and where Harry would be standing. "Start small," she called. "We don't know how this will echo off the walls."

Harry positioned himself in the center of the quarry floor, the stone walls rising around him like the sides of a cauldron. He closed his eyes and reached inward, finding that now-familiar sensation of pressure building in his chest.

"Whenever you're ready," Hermione called, holding up her measuring device.

Harry took a deep breath, feeling the pressure build. Then he opened his mouth and let it out.

The sound that emerged was low and rumbling, barely louder than a shout. The air vibrated, and when he glanced at Hermione's device, the needles were jumping frantically.

"Fascinating," Hermione breathed, studying the readings. "Even at what I'd estimate is maybe ten percent of your capacity, the frequency range is extraordinary. It's hitting notes below normal human hearing."

"How did it feel?" Ginny asked, approaching now that the sound had stopped.

"Controlled," Harry said. "Like I was holding back a reservoir. I could feel how much more was there."

"Try again," Ginny suggested. "Gradually increase the power. We need to know what your upper limits are."

Over the next twenty minutes, Harry worked his way up through increasing roars. Each roar was slightly louder, slightly more powerful than the last. By the time he reached what he estimated was thirty percent, visible shockwaves were rippling out from him, disturbing the loose stones on the quarry floor.

"That would definitely break windows," Hermione noted, scribbling furiously in her notebook. "And probably rupture eardrums at close range."

"Can you feel when you're about to hit your limit?" Ginny asked.

Harry considered this. "Not exactly. It's not like there's a clear line. More like the pressure keeps building, and I keep releasing more. I don't know where it stops."

"Then we need to find out," Ginny said with a big smile. "Because in a real fight, you need to know if you're about to hit your maximum or if you've still got reserves."

She was right, of course. Harry needed to understand his capabilities completely, even the dangerous ones.

"Alright," he said, squaring his shoulders. "But you two should probably get behind something solid."

Hermione and Ginny retreated to a particularly thick section of rock wall, ducking behind an outcropping that would shield them from the worst of any shockwave. Once they were in position, Harry turned to face the opposite wall of the quarry.

He closed his eyes and reached deep, deeper than he'd gone before. The pressure built and built, filling his chest until it felt like his ribs would crack from containing it. His wolf side surged up eagerly, recognizing this display of dominance and power.

Harry opened his mouth and roared.

The air rippled, visible distortions spreading out in concentric circles from Harry's position. Loose stones jumped and scattered across the quarry floor. The shockwave hit the far wall with enough force to send chunks of rock tumbling down.

And Harry could feel—he could actually feel that he had more. This wasn't his limit.

He pushed harder. The roar intensified, the shockwaves becoming more pronounced. A medium-sized boulder twenty feet away cracked straight down the middle. The old, rusted equipment scattered around the quarry began to vibrate and shift.

Still not his limit.

Harry opened himself completely, letting every ounce of power flow through. The air seemed to scream along with him.

The far wall of the quarry, the one he'd been facing, simply shattered. Chunks of stone exploded outward as spiderweb cracks spread across the entire surface. The smaller cave entrance collapsed entirely, filled with falling debris. Even the ground beneath Harry's feet was cracking, radiating out from where he stood.

And then, just as suddenly as it had come, the power cut off. Harry's throat was suddenly painful, his chest heaving, every muscle in his body trembling with exertion.

Harry turned to look at Hermione and Ginny, who were still pressed against their protective outcropping, eyes wide with shock.

"Bloody hell," Ginny whispered.

Hermione emerged slowly, staring at the destruction Harry had wrought. The far wall of the quarry looked like it had been hit with a battering ram.

"Harry," Hermione said carefully, "that was approximately sixty meters away. And you destroyed it. With sound."

Harry looked down at his hands, which were still shaking. "I couldn't hold it any longer," he admitted. "That was everything I had. My throat gave out."

"Your throat is the limiting factor," Hermione said, already scribbling notes. "Not the power itself. You could probably produce even more force if your vocal cords could handle it, but they're still partially human."

"Thank Merlin for small mercies," Ginny muttered. She approached Harry, examining him with concern. "How do you feel? Besides the obvious throat damage."

"Exhausted," Harry said honestly. "Like I just ran five miles and fought a troll. Everything aches."

"That makes sense," Hermione said. "You essentially channeled an enormous amount of magical and physical energy through your body in a very short time. The strain would be considerable."

Harry tested his voice, trying to speak normally. His throat felt like he'd swallowed broken glass. "Is permanent?"

"Doubtful," Hermione assured him. "Your enhanced healing should take care of it. Though I'd recommend not trying your maximum output again anytime soon. Once we're back at Hogwarts, we can research strengthening charms for vocal cords."

Ginny was walking around the quarry floor, examining the damage more closely. "Look at this," she called, crouching near where Harry had been standing. "The cracks in the ground form a perfect circle around your position. Like a radius of destruction."

Harry joined her, his enhanced vision making the pattern clear even in the dappled sunlight. She was right—the cracks spread out from where he'd stood, stopping at roughly the same distance in all directions. About three meters.

"That's your safe zone," Ginny said, looking up at him. "Anything inside that radius when you roar at full power probably gets pulverized by the initial shockwave. Everything beyond it gets hit with decreasing force based on distance."

"So it's an area-of-effect weapon," Hermione said, joining them. "Devastating at close range, still dangerous at medium distance, potentially survivable at long range depending on the power level you use."

Harry tried to process this clinical description of something that felt so visceral and wild when he used it. But they were right to analyze it this way. Understanding the mechanics made it less frightening, more controllable.

"Can you do directed roars?" Ginny asked suddenly. "Like, focus all that power in one direction instead of spreading it out?"

"I don't know," Harry admitted. "I've only ever just... let it out. I didn't try to aim it anywhere."

"Something to experiment with," Hermione noted. "Though perhaps not today. You look dead on your feet, Harry."

She wasn't wrong. The full-power roar had left Harry feeling wrung out, every bit of energy drained from his body. His throat throbbed painfully, and standing upright was requiring genuine effort.

"Maybe we should head back," Harry said, his voice rough and gravelly.

"Definitely," Hermione agreed. "But first—" She pulled out what looked like a modified Quick-Quotes Quill and began dictating. "Subject demonstrated significant power scaling, with estimated maximum output creating visible shockwaves and structural damage at sixty meters. Limiting factor appears to be physical strain on vocal cords rather than magical capacity. Recommend graduated practice schedule to build endurance without risking permanent damage."

"You're writing a research paper on my throat," Harry observed.

"On your abilities," Hermione corrected. "Which include your remarkable vocal capabilities. This is important data, Harry. The more we understand, the better we can help you develop proper control."

Ginny had moved to stand beside Harry, and now she slipped her hand into his. "Come on," she said gently. "Let's get you home before you collapse. Mum will have kittens if we bring you back looking like death warmed over."

The walk back through the woods was slower than their arrival had been. Harry's legs felt heavy, and more than once he had to stop and catch his breath. Hermione and Ginny flanked him, not quite supporting his weight but close enough to help if he needed it.

"We're going to need to develop a training schedule," Hermione said as they navigated around a particularly thick bramble patch. "Something that lets you build up your abilities systematically without exhausting yourself like this every time."

"Agreed," Ginny said. "Maybe start each morning with the physical tests—running, jumping, strength exercises. Those don't seem to tire you out as much. Then we can do one specialized session per week on the more intensive abilities. Claws one week, roar the next, whatever else you discover along the way."

"That sounds sensible," Harry managed to say, though his throat protested even that simple response.

The Burrow came into view through the trees, its crooked structure looking warm and welcoming in the afternoon sun. Harry could smell something cooking—Mrs. Weasley's stew, probably—and his stomach reminded him that he'd burned through an enormous amount of energy.

"Remember," Ginny said quietly as they approached the back door. "You've got a sore throat. Nothing serious. Just overdid it talking with us during the walk."

"Got it," Harry whispered back, his voice truly rough now.

They slipped inside to find the kitchen already full of activity. Ron was arguing with Fred and George about something Quidditch-related. Percy sat at the table reading a Ministry report. Mrs. Weasley was indeed stirring a large pot of stew.

"There you are!" Mrs. Weasley said brightly when she saw them. "Lunch will be ready in ten minutes. Harry, dear, you look flushed. Are you feeling alright?"

"Just a bit of a sore throat, Mrs. Weasley," Harry said, and winced at how terrible his voice sounded. "Nothing serious."

Mrs. Weasley's expression immediately shifted to concern. She set down her spoon and approached Harry, pressing the back of her hand to his forehead. "You're a bit warm. Have you been overdoing it? You're still recovering from all that stress after the World Cup."

"I'm fine, really," Harry protested, but Mrs. Weasley was already bustling around, pulling out pepper-up potion and honey from various cupboards.

"Sit down and rest your voice," she commanded. "I'll make you some tea with honey. That should help with the throat."

Harry caught Hermione and Ginny's eyes as he obediently sat at the table. Both were struggling not to smile.

Worth it, Harry thought, even as Mrs. Weasley fussed over him.

He had roared. He had destroyed a rock wall. He had pushed his abilities to their absolute limit and discovered he was far more powerful than he'd realized.

And tomorrow, they'd do it all again.

Dinner at the Burrow that evening was a lively affair, the kind of chaotic warmth Harry had come to associate with the Weasley family. Mrs. Weasley had outdone herself with a proper roast—golden-brown chicken surrounded by roasted potatoes, carrots, and parsnips, all swimming in rich gravy. The scent alone made Harry's mouth water, his enhanced senses picking up every herb and seasoning she'd used.

Harry was starving. He loaded his plate without prompting and dug in.

Mrs. Weasley noticed immediately. Her face lit up with such obvious pleasure that Harry felt his cheeks warm. "It's so good to see you eating properly again, dear," she said, reaching over to pat his hand. "You had me worried for a while there."

"It's delicious, Mrs. Weasley," Harry said, and meant it. His throat still ached from the morning's training, but the honey tea she'd forced on him earlier had helped. His voice was nearly back to normal, though he was being careful not to strain it.

"More potatoes, Harry?" she asked, already reaching for the serving spoon.

"I've got it, Mum," Ginny said quickly, intercepting the spoon and passing it to Harry with a knowing smile. "Let him serve himself. He's not going to waste away in the next five minutes."

Mrs. Weasley huffed but subsided, turning her attention to making sure everyone else had enough food. The table was packed—all seven Weasley children plus Harry and Hermione meant the old wooden surface was crowded with plates and elbows and reaching arms. It should have been overwhelming, but instead it felt right. If only Sirius were here, too.

"So, Bill," Mr. Weasley said from the head of the table, "you mentioned you needed to head back soon?"

Bill nodded, swallowing his mouthful before answering. "Tomorrow morning, actually. There's an issue with a curse at one of the dig sites—nasty piece of work that's stumped everyone else. Gringotts wants their best curse-breaker on it." He said it matter-of-factly, but Harry caught the hint of pride in his voice.

"Tomorrow?" Mrs. Weasley's fork clattered against her plate. "But you've barely been home a week!"

"I know, Mum, but it's urgent. Someone could get seriously hurt if we don't neutralize the curse soon." Bill reached over and squeezed her hand. "I'll be back for Christmas. Promise."

"I'll be here another week at least," Charlie offered, clearly trying to soften the blow. "The reserve can manage without me for a bit longer. Dragons are easier to handle in summer anyway—they're less aggressive when they're warm."

"Well, that's something," Mrs. Weasley said, though she still looked disappointed. She turned to Percy. "And you're certain you need to go back to Hogwarts? Surely the Ministry can manage their 'important business' without you there in person."

Percy straightened in his chair, his expression taking on that pompous quality that always made Fred and George roll their eyes. "The Ministry has entrusted me with a vital role in coordinating this year's special event. My presence at Hogwarts is essential for ensuring proper protocols are followed."

"Very important, I'm sure," Fred said, his voice dripping with false sincerity. "Someone has to organize Fudge's quills by color. Can't have the red ones mixing with the blue ones—that would be chaos."

George nodded solemnly. "Absolute anarchy. The Ministry might collapse."

Percy's face turned the color of a ripe tomato. "I am not organizing anyone's quills! I'm coordinating a significant international—" He cut himself off, jaw snapping shut as he remembered he wasn't supposed to elaborate.

"Boys," Mrs. Weasley said sharply, pointing her fork at Fred and George. "That's quite enough. Percy's work is important, even if you don't understand it."

"Oh, we understand perfectly," Fred said. "Percy's very good at making himself seem important."

"Fred Weasley!"

"Sorry, Mum," Fred said, though he didn't look particularly sorry. He caught Harry's eye across the table and grinned.

After dinner, the group dispersed naturally. Mr. Weasley retreated to his shed to tinker with some Muggle artifact he'd acquired. Mrs. Weasley corralled Hermione and Ginny into helping with the washing up, despite their protests. Bill and Charlie disappeared upstairs to pack. Percy locked himself in his room with another stack of Ministry documents.

Harry found himself on the stairs with Ron, both of them heading up to bed.

"Do you think Fred and George really have a chance?" Ron asked suddenly. "If they enter the tournament, I mean."

Harry paused on the landing, considering the question. "I don't know what the tournament even involves. Could be anything."

"But it's got to be dangerous, right?" Ron sounded excited rather than concerned. "If people died in it before, I mean. It can't be just answering trivia questions or flying through some hoops."

"Probably not," Harry agreed. He leaned against the banister, looking at his best friend. Ron's ears were slightly red, the way they always got when he was working himself up to say something important.

"Sometimes I wish I could do something like that," Ron said quietly. "Something big. Prove I'm not just 'another Weasley,' you know? Bill's a brilliant curse-breaker, Charlie works with dragons, Percy's doing his Ministry thing—even Fred and George are working to open a joke shop or something like that. And I'm just... Ron. The sixth son. Nothing special."

Harry understood that feeling more than Ron could possibly know—the need to prove yourself, to be seen as more than what others expected. But Ron didn't need a deadly tournament to prove his worth.

"You don't need a tournament to prove anything, Ron," Harry said firmly. "You're brilliant as you are. You stood by me when everyone else thought I was lying about the Basilisk. You stood up on your broken leg against Sirius when we all thought he was a murderer. You're loyal and brave and—"

"And I play a mean game of chess," Ron interrupted with a self-deprecating laugh. "Very useful life skill, that."

"Ron—"

"I know, I know." Ron waved him off, but Harry could see he was pleased despite his scoffing. "You're my best mate, you have to say nice things. It's in the friendship contract."

"There's a contract?" Harry asked, raising an eyebrow. "When did we sign that?"

"First year, on the train. Didn't you read the fine print? Right there between 'share sweets' and 'cover for each other when we break curfew.'"

Harry grinned. "Must have missed that part."

They continued up the stairs to Ron's room. The orange walls and Chudley Cannons posters greeted them like old friends. Ron immediately collapsed onto his bed with a groan, while Harry sat on the edge of his camp bed, pulling off his shoes.

They talked for a few more minutes, Ron's responses becoming increasingly drowsy until finally he rolled over, mumbling something incoherent, and began to snore softly.

Harry had just stretched out on his own bed when he heard the soft creak of the door. His enhanced hearing had already identified her footsteps, her heartbeat, before Hermione slipped inside, closing the door carefully behind her.

She was wearing a silk nightgown that clung to her curves, her hair tumbling over her shoulders. In the dim light from the window, Harry could see the mischievous smile playing at her lips as she pressed a finger to them, gesturing for silence. Ron's snoring continued, oblivious.

"Want to come study?" Hermione whispered, her eyes dancing with an invitation that had nothing to do with books.

Harry's pulse quickened. He nodded, slipping from his bed and padding silently across the floor. Hermione's hand found his, warm and soft, and she led him out into the hallway.

They moved like ghosts through the Burrow, avoiding every creaky floorboard. Hermione pulled him toward the room she shared with Ginny, and when she opened the door, Harry saw that Ginny was already waiting, sitting on her bed with a knowing smirk.

"Took you long enough," Ginny said softly.

The moment the door clicked shut behind them, Hermione turned to Harry and crashed her lips against his. The kiss was hungry, her hands immediately going to his shirt and yanking it over his head. Her fingers traced the lean muscles of his chest and abdomen, muscles earned from Quidditch and his recent intense training.

"God, I've wanted to do this all day," Hermione breathed against his mouth, her nails dragging lightly down his stomach.

Harry's hands found her waist, pulling her flush against him as he deepened the kiss. His tongue slid against hers, tasting the faint mint of her toothpaste. Hermione moaned softly into his mouth, her body melting against his.

His hands roamed lower, bunching up her nightgown until he could feel the bare skin of her thighs. Hermione gasped when his fingers traced higher, finding her already wet and ready for him. She wasn't wearing anything underneath.

"Fuck, Hermione," Harry groaned, his fingers sliding through her slick folds.

"Please," she whimpered, her hips rolling against his hand.

Harry captured her lips again as he slid two fingers inside her tight heat. Hermione's moan was muffled against his mouth as he began to move, curling his fingers to stroke that spot inside her that made her knees weak. Her pussy clenched around his fingers, hot and wet and perfect.

"Merlin, Harry," Hermione gasped, breaking the kiss to rest her forehead against his shoulder, her breath coming in short pants.

A cough made them both look up. Ginny was watching them with dark, hungry eyes, and as Harry met her gaze, she began to unbutton her nightshirt.

"Do you two need a room?" Ginny asked with a wicked grin. "Oh wait, you're already in mine."

Her shirt fell away, revealing her pert breasts and the smooth expanse of her stomach. She hooked her thumbs into her knickers and pushed them down, stepping out of them and leaving herself completely bare.

Harry pulled his fingers from Hermione's pussy, making her whimper at the loss. He gripped Hermione's hips firmly, his green eyes blazing with lust.

"I'm going to make you scream," he promised, his voice rough with desire.

Then he lifted her—Hermione was light enough that it was easy—and tossed her onto Hermione's bed. She bounced once, her nightgown riding up to her waist, exposing her glistening pussy to his hungry gaze.

"Yes," Hermione moaned, spreading her legs shamelessly. "Please, Harry, ravage me."

Harry didn't need to be told twice. He yanked off his trousers and pants, freeing himself, then climbed onto the bed between Hermione's spread thighs. But instead of giving her his cock, he lowered his head and sealed his mouth over her pussy.

"Oh fuck!" Hermione cried out, her back arching off the bed.

Harry's tongue was magic—literal and figurative. He licked a long stripe through her folds, tasting her arousal, before focusing on her clit. He sucked the sensitive bundle of nerves between his lips, flicking it with his tongue in a rhythm that had Hermione writhing beneath him. His hands gripped her thighs, holding her open as he devoured her.

He slid two fingers back inside her, pumping them in time with his tongue's assault on her clit. Hermione's hands fisted in his messy black hair, holding him against her as she ground her pussy against his face.

"Don't stop, don't stop, oh god Harry—"

The bed dipped as Ginny climbed on, straddling Hermione's face. Hermione's muffled moan vibrated against Harry's tongue as she immediately began to lick Ginny's pussy, her tongue working the younger girl with the same enthusiasm she brought to everything she did.

"That's it, Hermione," Ginny gasped, her hands bracing on the headboard as she rode Hermione's face. "Your tongue feels so good."

Harry added a third finger, stretching Hermione open as he continued to suck and lick her clit. He could feel her getting closer, her inner walls beginning to flutter around his fingers, her thighs trembling against his shoulders. He doubled his efforts, curling his fingers to stroke her g-spot while his tongue worked faster against her clit.

Hermione came with a scream that was muffled by Ginny's pussy, her whole body convulsing as waves of pleasure crashed through her. Harry didn't stop, working her through the orgasm until she was oversensitive and twitching. Her release coated his fingers and chin, sweet and tangy on his tongue.

Above her, Ginny was riding Hermione's face frantically, chasing her own climax. "Yes, yes, just like that—oh fuck, Hermione!"

Ginny came hard, her thighs clamping around Hermione's head as she ground down against that talented tongue. When she finally climbed off, Hermione's face was glistening with Ginny's arousal, her lips swollen and her eyes glazed with lust.

Harry sat back on his heels, his cock standing thick and hard between his legs. All nine inches of him was flushed dark with need, precum beading at the tip.

"Please," Hermione whimpered, her eyes locked on his impressive length. "I need you inside me."

Harry positioned himself between her legs, the head of his cock nudging against her dripping entrance. Then he thrust forward, burying himself to the hilt in her tight heat.

"FUCK!" Hermione screamed, her back arching off the bed. "Oh god, Harry, you're so big!"

Thank Merlin for silencing charms. Ginny had cast one on the room earlier, meaning Hermione could be as loud as she wanted without waking the entire household.

Harry began to move, pulling almost all the way out before slamming back in. Hermione's pussy was like a vice around him, hot and wet and gripping him perfectly. He set a punishing pace, his hips snapping forward with enough force to make the headboard bang against the wall.

"Yes, yes, fuck me harder!" Hermione was moaning like a whore, her legs wrapped around his waist, urging him deeper. "Use me, Harry, make me yours!"

Ginny positioned herself beside Hermione, her hand sliding down to rub her own clit as she watched Harry pound into their girlfriend. "You look so hot taking his cock, Hermione. Does he feel good stretching you open?"

"So good," Hermione gasped, her breasts bouncing with every thrust. "So fucking good!"

Harry leaned down, bracing himself on his forearms as he continued to drive into her. The new angle had him hitting even deeper, the head of his cock kissing her cervix with every thrust. Hermione's nails raked down his back, leaving red trails in their wake.

"You're so tight," Harry groaned against her neck, his teeth grazing her pulse point. "Taking my cock so perfectly."

The room filled with the obscene sounds of sex—skin slapping against skin, Hermione's wanton moans, the wet squelch of Harry's cock driving in and out of her soaked pussy, Ginny's breathy gasps as she pleasured herself.

Harry could feel his own climax building, his balls tightening as pleasure coiled at the base of his spine. But he wanted Hermione to come again first. He shifted his weight to one arm and slid his hand between their bodies, finding her swollen clit and rubbing tight circles around it.

"Come for me," he commanded, his voice rough. "Come on my cock, Hermione."

The dual stimulation of his thick shaft stretching her open and his fingers on her clit sent Hermione over the edge. She came with a piercing scream, her pussy clamping down on Harry's cock like a vice, rhythmic pulses milking him as waves of pleasure crashed through her.

The sensation of her coming apart beneath him triggered Harry's own orgasm. With a guttural groan, he buried himself as deep as he could go and came, flooding her with his release. His hips jerked with each pulse, emptying himself inside her as pleasure whited out his vision.

Beside them, Ginny cried out her own climax, her fingers working frantically between her legs as she watched them fall apart together.

For a long moment, the only sound was their heavy breathing. Harry's arms trembled with exertion as he held himself above Hermione, both of them slick with sweat. Finally, he carefully pulled out, making Hermione whimper at the loss. His cum leaked from her well-used pussy, dripping onto the sheets.

"That was incredible," Hermione breathed, her voice hoarse from screaming.

Harry took a deep breath, and Ginny quickly took Hermione's place, ready for her own round. "Fuck me, Harry."

World Cup Grounds

The forest near the World Cup grounds still bore the scars of that night three weeks ago. Greyback moved through the darkness, his yellow eyes picking out details that would have been invisible to human sight. Behind him, seven other werewolves followed.

"Are you certain this is the right place?" one of them asked—Marcus, a younger werewolf who still sometimes forgot his place in the pack hierarchy.

Greyback didn't bother answering. He simply stopped and gestured at the ground beneath their feet.

The earth was torn up, massive furrows carved into the soil like something with claws the size of small trees had dragged them through. Even three weeks later, even with rain and wind and the natural settling of disturbed ground, the damage was unmistakable. This wasn't the work of any normal creature.

"Jacklyn's Claw," another werewolf breathed—Catherine, one of the few females in Greyback's network. "What could do this?"

Greyback crouched, running his fingers along one of the gouges. The edges were smooth, almost polished, as if whatever had created them had applied tremendous pressure. He brought his hand to his nose and inhaled deeply.

The scent hit him like a drug.

It was old, faded by time and weather, but still present. And it was unlike anything Greyback had encountered in his fifty-three years of life, thirty-seven of them as a werewolf. He'd smelled dragons, acromantulas, trolls, every manner of magical creature that the wizarding world had catalogued and plenty that it hadn't. He'd smelled Dark magic and ancient curses and the particular stench of death magic.

This was different.

"What is it?" Marcus asked, edging closer. "What do you smell?"

Greyback didn't answer immediately. He was too focused on parsing the scent, trying to understand what his nose was telling him. There was something almost familiar about it. Something that reminded him of...

Himself.

Not exactly the same. But close enough. The scent carried traces of wolf—not quite werewolf, but not quite natural wolf either. Something in between.

"I've never smelled anything like this," Greyback admitted finally, and his pack members shifted uneasily at the confession. Greyback never admitted ignorance. "It's powerful. Like a werewolf, but..."

"But what?" Catherine pressed.

"It feels like several creatures put together." He gestured at the destroyed ground, at the splintered trees nearby, at the massive footprints that had been preserved in a patch of mud despite the intervening weeks.

He began walking, following the scent trail. The others fell in behind him, instinctively adopting the formation of a hunting pack. Greyback led them deeper into the forest, tracking the creature's path from that chaotic night.

The destruction was sporadic but unmistakable. A tree split down the middle. Claw marks on boulders. Places where the ground had cracked under tremendous weight. And through it all, that strange, wrong scent, growing stronger as they followed it.

Greyback paused at a particularly dense thicket. The scent was strongest here. The creature had stopped in this spot, had remained here for some time.

And then the trail just... ended.

"What the hell?" Marcus pushed forward, sniffing at the air. "Where did it go? Did it Apparate?"

"Creatures that size don't Apparate," Catherine said. "Even the Dark Lord would have trouble apparating that thing—"

"I know that," Greyback snapped. He was circling the area, his nose nearly touching the ground as he searched for some continuation of the trail. But there was nothing. The scent simply stopped, as if the creature had ceased to exist in this exact spot.

No. Not ceased to exist.

Greyback's eyes narrowed as he caught something else. A secondary scent, faint but present, emerging from the same spot where the creature's trail ended. He dropped to all fours and pressed his face close to the disturbed earth.

Human.

The realization made Greyback's heart race with excitement. The creature's scent ended exactly where a human scent began. Not two separate entities passing through the same space at different times, but a transition. A transformation.

"Greyback?" Catherine's voice carried concern. "What is it? What do you smell?"

"The creature turned back," Greyback said slowly, his mind racing. "Here. Right here. It went from that thing—whatever it was—back into human form."

Shocked silence greeted this pronouncement.

"That's impossible," Marcus said. "Nothing that size could transform into a human—"

"I know what I'm smelling," Greyback snarled, his patience with questions wearing thin. He continued circling, drawing in deep breaths, letting his enhanced senses build a picture that his eyes couldn't see.

The human scent was clearer now that he knew to look for it. Male. Young. And underneath the base scent of humanity, there were traces of something else. Fear. Exhaustion. Blood—not the creature's blood, but human blood that this person had been covered in.

And then Greyback caught something that made him freeze mid-step.

He knew this scent.

Not well. Not intimately. But he'd smelled it before. Where? When?

Greyback closed his eyes, forcing his memory back. The scent was young, definitely young. Male. Wizard, not Muggle—there was a particular quality to magical blood that was unmistakable. And there was something else, something about the underlying scent that was hauntingly familiar.

It came to him suddenly: Hogwarts.

"Whoever the monster is," Greyback said slowly, opening his eyes, "they're young. Very young. Student age, I'd wager." He moved in a wider circle, gathering more information. "Definitely still at Hogwarts. The scent's too fresh, too saturated with that castle's particular magical signature."

"A student?" Catherine sounded incredulous. "You're saying a Hogwarts student transformed into that thing?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying." Greyback grinned, showing too many teeth. "A child with the power to become something that can shrug off the Ministry's best spells. Something that can kill Dark Wizards with its bare hands. Something that's part wolf, part human, and all predator."

He turned to face his pack, his yellow eyes gleaming with excitement. "This changes everything. If we can find this student, if we can recruit them, bring them to our side..."

"How do you propose we find them?" Marcus asked. "Hogwarts has hundreds of students."

"We narrow it down," Greyback said. "This person would have been at the World Cup. They would have been present during the Death Eater attack. And they would have disappeared during the chaos—probably the same time the creature appeared." He began pacing, his strategic mind working through the problem. "We get lists of attendees. We cross-reference with Hogwarts students. We look for anyone who went missing during the critical time frame."

"That's still a lot of potential candidates," Catherine pointed out.

"Then we use our noses," Greyback said. "I have this scent now. I'll know it if I encounter it again. And there aren't that many places a Hogwarts student can be during the school year." His grin widened. "They have to return to school eventually. And when they do, I'll be watching."

He turned back to the spot where the transformation had occurred, breathing in deeply one more time, committing every nuance of the scent to memory. Young. Male. Powerful. And carrying just enough wolf-scent to mark them as something other than fully human.

"This student doesn't know what they are yet," Greyback said quietly. "Probably terrified of their own power. Probably trying to hide what they've become." He looked at his pack. "But we're going to find them. We're going to show them that they don't have to hide. That they can be what they truly are."

"And if they refuse?" Marcus asked.

Greyback's expression hardened. "Then they become a threat that needs to be eliminated. But I don't think they'll refuse. Nobody who's tasted that kind of power wants to go back to being weak. Nobody who's felt what it's like to be the apex predator wants to return to being prey."

He gestured for his pack to follow. "Come. We have work to do. Lists to obtain, information to gather, a student to find." He paused, looking back at the clearing one more time. "And when we do find them, everything changes. For us. For the Ministry. For everyone who's ever looked down on werewolves as lesser beings."

Catherine moved beside him. "You really think this student will join us? They could be anyone. They could be from a prominent family, have loyalties to the Ministry."

"Loyalties change," Greyback said coldly, "when you realize your own kind sees you as a monster. When you understand that the Ministry would lock you up or put you down the moment they learned what you are. When you discover that the only people who'll accept you are the ones society has already rejected."

He began walking, his pack falling in behind him. The scent of his mysterious student lingered in his nose, a promise and a threat all at once.

"We're going to find you," Greyback murmured to the empty forest. "And when we do, you'll have a choice: join the pack, or face it as an enemy. Either way, the wizarding world is going to learn that werewolves are not the broken, pitiful creatures they think we are."
