Barrier was originally a Level 3 barrier, which didn't make much sense, considering it was incapable of causing damage. The ability creates a transparent wall that separates what's on either side of it. So long as it has energy to feed it, said wall is nigh indestructible.
Dante knew he still had more than enough energy to block the same meteoric attack the hero threw at him a dozen times or so. He had made the choice to only rely on it in desperate situations, not wanting to waste energy on blocking attacks he could easily dodge. That last one wasn't among them, and so he didn't hesitate to activate the ability. He wasn't late, and he wasn't out of energy, and even then, it still wasn't enough.
Buried in the depths of the mountain he was shot into, Dante quickly gave the command to swap out the crumbling 5-6, guarding himself with the invulnerability of the white threads.
'He can… break Barrier?'
