Our footsteps echoed softly on the thick red carpet as we walked side by side toward the elevator. Lara's hand stayed in mine—warm, fingers loosely curled around my palm like it was the most natural thing. The hallway lights glowed gold, throwing long shadows behind us. The thump of music from downstairs felt distant now, muffled by the walls.
We stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut with a quiet whoosh. I reached over and pressed the button for the second floor. The small light glowed red under my finger.
The box started moving upward, smooth and slow.
I glanced at her. She was already looking at me—eyes dark, lips curved in that same small, knowing smile.
"This place wasn't hard to find, right?" I asked, keeping my voice low.
"Not at all," she said, raising one eyebrow. "My friends come here all the time. They've told me plenty about this place." She paused, then leaned in just a little closer. "Especially about you, Ezra."
