The noisy discussions echoed throughout the Ancient Arena.
Most of the spectators were extremely curious about the pink flash of light from earlier.
An attack that could make Poliwrath lose its ability to battle outright was certainly quite powerful.
Nowadays, with the Fairy type still not having been systematically researched and publicly documented, not many people knew about moves such as Dazzling Gleam.
After all, even if Pokémon such as Clefairy and Jigglypuff evolved, their combat abilities were still somewhat lacking.
They were cute, fluffy little Pokémon, better suited for being held in one's arms and cuddled.
More importantly, because the Fairy type had not yet been clearly identified, no one was conducting any related training or research.
Even with a powerful Pokémon like Gardevoir, most Trainers still relied on Psychic-type moves in battle rather than moves of other types.
Of course, uncommon didn't mean nonexistent.
Among the enormous audience, there were still plenty of knowledgeable people. They quickly found relevant videos and written records.
"It's the Psychic-type Dazzling Gleam! Its base power is a full 80, and it's super effective against Poliwrath!"
A thin man wearing glasses excitedly shouted this out.
At that moment, everyone understood.
Their gazes toward Ninetales grew even more fervent.
Just like Fire Ninetales, it could use Psychic-type abilities.
That was simply incredible.
Silas, however, could only remain speechless.
This was exactly why discovering the Fairy type was so difficult.
By pure coincidence, Poliwrath, with its Water/Fighting typing, happened to be weak to both Fairy- and Psychic-type attacks.
Ninetales had also always possessed a natural talent for psychic abilities.
Under these circumstances, anyone would instinctively assume that Dazzling Gleam was a Psychic-type move rather than a move belonging to some unknown type.
If Silas weren't a transmigrator who clearly remembered that Pokémon had a Fairy type, he might even have wondered whether his own memories were wrong, or whether the Pokémon franchise's creators simply had no idea what they were doing.
Masayuki helplessly recalled Poliwrath.
As a Trainer, he was delighted to see a Pokémon evolve.
As an opponent, however, he absolutely hated seeing the opposing Pokémon evolve during battle.
This was practically cheating in broad daylight!
For a Pokémon like Vulpix, evolving into Ninetales was far more than merely doubling its strength.
"Slowbro, you're up."
Under the referee's urging, he threw out his second Poké Ball.
So what if the opponent possessed psychic talent?
He had a genuine Psychic-type Pokémon of his own.
"Slow...?"
A pink, bipedal Pokémon with a vacant smile appeared on the floating platform.
It opened its mouth blankly and greeted Ninetales.
Ninetales narrowed its long eyes.
It could sense that this wasn't going to be an easy opponent.
"Whoa!!" The commentator, along with the spectators, cried out in surprise. "It's the Psychic-type Slowbro! This is an incredibly rare Pokémon!"
Well, according to the commentator, hardly any Pokémon weren't rare or simply powerful.
Otherwise, there would be no way to stir up the audience's enthusiasm for the battle.
But to be fair, he wasn't actually wrong.
Although Slowpoke and Shellder weren't considered particularly rare, Slowbro was exceedingly uncommon.
It wasn't that the probability of Shellder biting onto Slowpoke's tail was especially low.
Rather, raising a Slowpoke to a level high enough for it to evolve into Slowbro was enough to drive a Trainer insane.
It required an energy level as high as Level 37.
Setting aside potential and aptitude for the moment, judging from Slowpoke's reaction speed, raising its level was hardly any easier than raising a Magikarp.
A Trainer was practically guaranteed to wear a face of despair.
Moreover, Shellder was actually another crucial part of the process.
Pokémon had minds of their own.
Convincing a sufficiently talented Shellder to merge with Slowpoke and evolve through symbiosis, rather than grow or evolve independently, was also extremely difficult.
Shellder raised by Trainers wouldn't necessarily possess the same obsessive fixation that wild Shellder had with the sweetness of Slowpoke's tail.
Most Slowbro found in the wild were the result of considerable coincidence.
As a Trainer, you couldn't exactly make your Slowpoke spend all day fishing after it reached the level required for evolution.
And even a Slowbro evolved in such a manner might not have satisfactory strength.
With all these factors combined, despite Slowbro having many advantages and being a Psychic-type Pokémon, very few Trainers were willing to raise one.
With that much time and effort, choosing another Pokémon was simply more worthwhile.
Silas wondered how long this guy must have spent raising such a Slowbro.
Looking at the Trainer and Pokémon across from him, he nodded appreciatively.
In his eyes, this Slowbro had developed quite well.
The pair of Shellder eyes seemingly resting silently on its tail were actually extremely alert, constantly gathering information and relaying it to the Slowpoke portion of its body.
The Slowpoke's mind had clearly become considerably sharper as well, and it was preparing for battle with complete seriousness.
Even if it couldn't reach the level of a Pesudo-Elite Pokémon, if this Slowpoke continued raising its level, it could still become something of a little tyrant among Advance-level Pokémon.
"Ninetales, use Mist."
Silas's eyes lit up as he ordered Ninetales to attack.
This opponent had genuinely given him quite a pleasant surprise.
Right after Ninetales's evolution, a Slowbro like this was perfect for testing its strength after evolution.
As for losing?
Now that it had evolved, he and Ninetales were absolutely going to win this battle.
A hazy white mist gradually spread across the entire battlefield under the hailstorm.
Ninetales's figure completely disappeared.
"Use Confusion to find it."
Masayuki was puzzled.
His opponent looked quite young, but surely he shouldn't have made such a huge mistake.
How could Ninetales possibly escape the psychic search of a Psychic-type Pokémon with nothing more than Snow Cloak?
Without the slightest hesitation, he issued the command.
About ten seconds passed.
Slowbro's eyes glowed with a blue-purple light as it shook its head at its Trainer.
It couldn't find Ninetales.
"Is it because of the Mist?"
Even though he had prepared for this, Masayuki still couldn't understand the key point.
"If you can't find it, then don't bother looking. Use Surf and overturn the entire battlefield!"
He launched his attack somewhat impatiently.
There was no other choice.
Under the hailstorm, Slowbro, which wasn't an Ice-type Pokémon, was constantly being battered by hail and losing stamina.
If it were the weak hail produced by Vulpix earlier, it wouldn't have mattered much.
But Ninetales's hail was impossible to ignore.
Masayuki didn't even intend to have Slowbro use Rain Dance to change the weather.
Although Slowbro was considerably better at this than Poliwrath, it absolutely couldn't match the enhancement Ninetales had gained after evolving.
If Poliwrath couldn't cancel out Vulpix's hail, Slowbro probably wouldn't be able to cancel out Ninetales's hail either.
Rather than waste time, it was better to launch an attack with another move.
The four eyes on the front and back of Slowbro's body simultaneously blazed with blue light.
It spread its legs.
A wave nearly three or four meters high lifted Slowbro into the air.
The spectators in the front rows silently put on their raincoats.
Fortunately, because this was a battle between Water-type Pokémon, everyone had come prepared.
Otherwise, a cold shower mixed with hail would have been rather unpleasant.
Under Slowbro's control, the surging wave gradually swallowed the vast expanse of white mist.
"Ninetales, use Blizzard."
Just when everyone thought Ninetales would have no choice but to dodge, Silas decisively ordered it to counterattack.
"Mi~"
A snow-white fox appeared at the opposite end of the battlefield.
Compared with its appearance earlier, Ninetales now had several crack-like marks around its eye sockets, making it look somewhat frightening.
Violent winds howled throughout the entire arena.
The four Pokémon battling in Fields Two and Three instinctively stopped their attacks and began struggling to stabilize themselves. Only Field Four, being the farthest away, was spared from the effects.
Several Trainers exchanged glances.
They were helpless, yet at the same time, somewhat shaken.
This could very well be their next opponent.
It certainly seemed incredibly powerful.
As the Pokémon directly facing the attack, Slowbro felt its effects most intensely.
It felt as though its entire body were being frozen solid, while the violent winds threatened to tear it apart.
"Slow...!"
It cried out in panic.
In an instant, brilliant blue-purple light covered its entire body.
They had supposedly been fighting a battle of wits.
So how had it suddenly turned into a contest of who could decide the winner with a single attack?
Masayuki was completely overwhelmed.
Judging from Ninetales's appearance, it wasn't difficult to guess that it had probably used Nasty Plot to strengthen itself.
That was likely another reason Slowbro hadn't been able to detect it earlier.
After all, Dark-type moves naturally had an advantage against Psychic-type Pokémon.
The problem was how many times Ninetales had used Nasty Plot.
Even one use of Nasty Plot was enough to make Blizzard's destructive power comparable to that of Explosion.
After two uses, Masayuki seriously doubted whether his Slowbro could withstand it.
Its resistance to Ice-type attacks was a fact.
But so was the fact that an attack could still inflict tremendous damage if its power exceeded a certain threshold.
Not to mention that under hail, Blizzard had perfect accuracy.
The Slowbro glowing with blue-purple light was soon swallowed by the white storm of snow and ice under Masayuki's worried gaze.
The howling wind was so fierce that even ice crystals began forming on his face.
"Brr..."
Silas shivered involuntarily as he released Blaziken to warm himself.
He hadn't expected Ninetales to become this terrifying after being empowered by Nasty Plot and using Blizzard.
"Blaze."
Blaziken merely rolled its eyes slightly.
In weather like this, if its Trainer didn't need it, it would have long since curled up inside its Poké Ball and gone to sleep.
Thinking this, the flames around its wrists burned even more intensely.
Most people didn't pay attention to Blaziken's appearance.
Even if they did notice it, nobody would probably say anything.
As long as it didn't enter the battlefield or interfere with the match, who would care where a Trainer's Pokémon was?
Even in League tournaments, releasing Pokémon from their Poké Balls wasn't an absolute requirement or regulation.
The wind gradually subsided.
Gentle sunlight once again spread across the entire battlefield.
The spectators and referee couldn't stop their bodies from trembling.
"Achoo!"
"Achoo!"
"Achoo!"
One sneeze rang out, seemingly triggering a chain reaction as spectators throughout the arena began sneezing one after another.
It was the middle of summer, and they were on an island.
Nobody would have bothered wearing a thick winter coat just to watch a match.
Who could have known that such a powerful Ice-type Pokémon would appear?
As for Slowbro...
One look at Masayuki's expression was enough.
Nobody thought that Slowbro, which had been frozen into a transparent block of ice, could continue fighting.
Even if it still had stamina left, there was no way it could break through the ice and escape.
"Slowbro is unable to battle! Masayuki's two Pokémon are both unable to continue fighting.
The winner of this round is Silas!"
With the referee's announcement, Silas successfully advanced to the Top 16 of this year's Whirl Islands Tournament.
Evening
Pokémon Center
"Your Prinplup and Ninetales have both fully recovered. Here are their Poké Balls. Please take good care of them."
After receiving the two Poké Balls from Nurse Joy, Silas walked back toward his room under the gazes of the Trainers around him.
"Top Four. Not bad."
Silas was quite satisfied with his performance in the Whirl Islands Tournament.
At the very least, judging solely by his ranking, it was an improvement.
After all, the Pokémon he had used were Prinplup and Ninetales.
He had only had these two little guys for a few months in total, so their performance had already been quite impressive.
Of course, Prinplup had been the one holding them back.
Although it could contend with some ordinary Advance-level Pokémon in terms of strength, when facing opponents who had made it into the semifinals of the Whirl Islands Tournament, it was ultimately still lacking.
Although it was supposedly a two-on-two battle, most of the time it had actually been Ninetales fighting two-on-one.
After defeating a Blastoise at the Pesudo-Elite level, Ninetales had ultimately been defeated by a Dewgong with exceptionally tough defenses.
Dewgong with the Thick Fat Ability possessed an almost extreme resistance to Ice-type attacks.
Silas estimated that even if Ninetales had used Nasty Plot three times, that Pesudo-Elite-level Dewgong would still have had enough strength left to continue fighting after taking Ninetales's Blizzard.
"Mi."
Two red flashes appeared, and the two Pokémon that had been busy for most of the day appeared inside the room.
As soon as it came out, Ninetales raised its head and began teasing Prinplup.
"Piplup! Prin!"
Prinplup could only flap its wings furiously in impotent anger, trying to hide its embarrassment.
It knew that if it could defeat even one Pokémon, the pressure on Ninetales would have been greatly reduced.
"All right."
Silas gently rubbed the heads of both little Pokémon.
"You've already done amazingly well. It looks like I'll have to rely on you two little guys to do your part when we get to the League tournament."
"Prin!"
"Mi!"
Hearing this, Prinplup and Ninetales both nodded proudly.
That's right.
The older members of the team were already getting old.
It was time for the two of them to become the kings of the team.
"Dree~!"
Dreepy gave its boss plenty of support, immediately waving its tail and cheering for Ninetales.
Although it didn't understand why its boss had suddenly become so much larger, something deep within its bloodline instinctively told it that it absolutely shouldn't provoke the Pokémon in front of it.
Otherwise, it would very easily get beaten senseless.
With Ninetales possessing the Ice/Fairy typing, every attack it used against Dragon-type Pokémon could be said to be super effective.
The newly hatched Gible also happily abandoned Gigalith and ran over.
In merely a few days, Ninetales had completely subdued the two Dragon-type Pokémon.
And this was something it had already accomplished back when it was still Vulpix.
"Prin?"
Prinplup stared blankly at the two little Pokémon circling around Ninetales.
