Chapter 12 - The Gu of Balance and the Hidden Threat

Chapter 12: The Gu of Balance and the Hidden Threat

Han Feng sat in silence.

The mysterious chrysalis rested in the palm of his hand.

Under the faint light of the ancient formation, its translucent body seemed almost alive.

Golden and black threads moved inside it.

They intertwined.

Separated.

Then intertwined again.

There was no conflict between them.

That was what made Han Feng uneasy.

The Dual Chaos Larva contained two opposing forces that had nearly destroyed each other before he stabilized them.

This Gu was different.

It wasn't suppressing its opposing energies.

It was balancing them.

Han Feng carefully extended his spiritual sense.

The moment his consciousness touched the chrysalis—

Resistance.

Not rejection.

Resistance.

It was as if something was preventing the Gu from completing a connection.

Han Feng withdrew his consciousness.

His eyes narrowed.

"You're incomplete."

The chrysalis remained motionless.

Han Feng examined it again.

There was no obvious wound.

No missing body part.

No sign of decay.

Yet something was definitely absent.

A catalyst.

A condition.

Perhaps even another Gu.

He couldn't tell.

The memories inherited from the original Han Feng contained nothing about a creature like this.

That alone made it valuable.

But it also made it dangerous.

Unknown things couldn't be judged by common rules.

Han Feng placed the chrysalis back inside his cloth pouch.

He would study it later.

For now, he needed to understand the cave.

He stood.

Then—

Crack.

A stone broke somewhere behind him.

Han Feng froze.

His eyes slowly moved toward the darkness.

Another sound followed.

Scrape.

Something was walking.

Heavy.

Slow.

Controlled.

Han Feng immediately activated the Art of the Celestial Veil.

His aura disappeared.

He extinguished the remaining light.

The cave fell into darkness.

A low growl rolled through the chamber.

Han Feng's hand moved toward his weapon.

Two amber eyes appeared in the darkness.

A large wolf stepped into view.

Its fur was almost completely black.

Thin blue markings covered its body, glowing faintly beneath its fur.

Mist surrounded its paws.

Han Feng's expression became serious.

A Mist Wolf.

He recognized the creature from the inherited memories.

Spiritual beast.

Extremely sensitive to changes in Qi.

Capable of manipulating mist to distort perception and conceal its movements.

But something was different.

This wolf was injured.

A scar ran along its side.

And around one of its hind legs was a broken metal ring.

The same kind of ring he had seen earlier.

Han Feng's eyes narrowed.

"So you were the one..."

The wolf suddenly looked toward him.

Han Feng stopped breathing.

The beast sniffed the air.

Its ears moved.

For several seconds, it stared directly at Han Feng's hiding place.

Han Feng didn't move.

The Art of the Celestial Veil held.

The wolf took a step forward.

Then another.

Han Feng's fingers tightened around his weapon.

If the beast attacked, he would have no choice.

But the wolf stopped.

Its attention shifted.

Toward the chrysalis.

Han Feng's gaze followed.

The moment the wolf saw the pouch containing the Gu, its expression changed.

Not anger.

Concern.

It approached slowly.

Then lowered its head beside the pouch.

Han Feng understood.

The beast wasn't protecting the Gu as a treasure.

It was protecting it as something precious.

Perhaps even something it had raised.

Han Feng slowly lowered his weapon.

Interesting.

The Mist Wolf walked toward the center of the chamber.

The ancient formation beneath its feet responded.

A faint blue light spread across the floor.

The chrysalis inside Han Feng's pouch began to vibrate.

Han Feng felt the connection immediately.

The two were linked.

Not through a master-servant relationship.

Something deeper.

The wolf's spiritual energy was flowing into the chrysalis.

Very slowly.

Almost imperceptibly.

Han Feng's eyes widened.

"So that's it."

The Gu wasn't incomplete because something was missing from its body.

It was incomplete because its energy source had been interrupted.

The Mist Wolf was feeding it.

And the Gu was returning something in exchange.

Balance.

A cycle.

The beast gave energy.

The Gu purified it.

Then returned a refined portion.

A symbiotic relationship.

Han Feng's expression became thoughtful.

If he took the Gu away now...

The wolf might die.

Or the Gu might never awaken.

Neither outcome was acceptable.

Not if he wanted to understand its true potential.

Han Feng remained hidden.

He watched.

Minutes passed.

The Mist Wolf eventually lay beside the chrysalis.

Its breathing became slower.

The blue markings across its body brightened.

The chrysalis responded.

Golden light spread through its shell.

Black energy followed.

The two forces moved together.

Han Feng felt the Celestial Diagram react.

His pupils contracted.

Again.

The same sensation.

The same resonance.

The same impossible familiarity.

The diagram wasn't simply reacting to the Gu.

It was reacting to the relationship between them.

Han Feng closed his eyes.

A thought appeared.

The Celestial Diagram wasn't teaching him how to control the Gu.

It was showing him how to understand them.

Balance.

Not domination.

That realization was strangely profound.

Most Gu Masters sought to force Gu into obedience.

Han Feng had always assumed that was the only path.

But perhaps...

There was another way.

A Gu didn't necessarily need to be dominated.

It could be understood.

And if the relationship was mutually beneficial...

The result could be far stronger.

Han Feng opened his eyes.

His expression became thoughtful.

"This could change everything."

But then—

The Mist Wolf suddenly raised its head.

Its ears pointed toward the entrance.

Han Feng's expression changed.

The wolf growled.

Not at him.

At something outside.

Han Feng expanded his spiritual perception.

At first, he sensed nothing.

Then...

Footsteps.

Faint.

Several people.

Moving through the forest.

Han Feng's heartbeat quickened.

Someone was approaching the cave.

He suppressed his aura even further.

The Mist Wolf stood.

Its fur rose.

The blue markings across its body became brighter.

Han Feng looked toward the entrance.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then a voice echoed from beyond the waterfall.

"Are you certain the traces came from here?"

Another voice answered.

"Yes."

A pause.

"There's definitely a spiritual beast nearby."

Han Feng's expression became cold.

Humans.

Not villagers wandering by accident.

They were hunting.

He glanced at the Mist Wolf.

Then at the chrysalis.

Then toward the entrance.

His mind began calculating.

If the newcomers entered the cave, they would discover the formations.

They would discover the Gu.

And perhaps...

They would discover him.

That couldn't happen.

Han Feng slowly moved backward.

The Mist Wolf looked at him.

For a brief moment, their eyes met.

Neither moved.

Neither attacked.

Then Han Feng noticed something unexpected.

The wolf stepped sideways.

It deliberately blocked the line of sight between Han Feng and the entrance.

Han Feng's eyes narrowed.

It was protecting him.

Or perhaps...

It simply understood that they shared the same enemy.

Either way, the result was the same.

Han Feng tightened his grip.

He had planned to remain hidden.

To avoid fighting.

To observe.

But circumstances had changed.

The people outside were getting closer.

He had three choices.

Run.

Fight.

Or manipulate the situation.

Han Feng preferred the third.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Fine."

He whispered.

"Let's see who these people are."

The Celestial Diagram pulsed inside his consciousness.

The seventh mark appeared for an instant.

This time...

It pointed toward the entrance.

Han Feng's smile disappeared.

The people outside weren't here by coincidence.

Someone had led them here.

And suddenly, the ancient word engraved in the formation came back to him.

Return.

Han Feng's gaze became cold.

Perhaps the cave wasn't merely hiding a secret.

Perhaps someone was trying to recover it.

And he had just arrived at the worst possible time.

The footsteps began again.

Closer.

The game of patience was over.

Now...

The game of shadows would begin.
