"And… All done!"
As Akeno declared cheerfully, applying the final coat of paint to the wall, the result of everyone's hard work was revealed.
The front of Adam's house had been completely renovated. With the use of plaster and a bit of demonic power to cover the damage, along with a fresh coat of paint, the house looked vastly different from its previously aged state.
Standing alongside everyone, Adam observed with a small smile.
It had taken the entire day, but the result was more than satisfying. Moreover, it served as a good way for Asia to socialize, and she genuinely enjoyed the company of the demon group.
Most of them—except Rias and Adam—were covered in some form of mess. Issei's clothes were nearly completely stained with paint. Kiba, Koneko, and Akeno had smudges on their clothes and faces, and even Asia, who at some point had decided to help, wasn't spared from the paint.
It was an amusing sight, and Adam couldn't help but feel thankful.
"Thank you all so much for this," he said without hesitation, clearly expressing his gratitude. Rias had no real obligation to do any of this, and even if she had hidden motivations, it didn't matter. In the end, even after he had refused her offer, she still went through with the renovation, and that alone deserved thanks.
"There's no need for that, Mr. Adam. It was our negligence that caused this in the first place," Rias turned to him, speaking sincerely. As this was a territory under her supervision, she genuinely believed that.
But Adam didn't see it that way. After all, some problems can't be stopped until they're already happening. The Fallen Angels had kept their plans hidden until the last moment—this had to be one of those situations.
"When someone wants to do evil, there's often nothing we can do until it's about to happen. Don't blame yourself for that. You're here now, aren't you?" Adam crossed his arms over his chest and spoke earnestly, earning a few glances. "So just accept the gratitude."
"...Alright." Rias fell silent for a moment before nodding with a small smile on her thin lips—one that didn't escape Akeno's eyes.
"..."
"I… I like the new paint."
Adam turned when Asia suddenly spoke. Beside him, she looked up at him with a satisfied smile.
"Yeah… me too." He ruffled her hair and nodded.
. . .
As night fell, Adam relaxed on the couch. After a whole day of renovations—even if he hadn't done much—he still felt somewhat tired.
His diplomacy with Rias turned out to be more productive than expected. Initially, he just wanted neutrality from them, but in the end, they could now be considered good acquaintances… maybe even allies.
There was no need for a contract, which meant his soul wasn't bound to demons, and yet, there was still goodwill between them.
And as for Asia—she seemed to have had fun and even bonded with the other members. Knowing her past, that was heartwarming to see. It made Adam feel even more grateful to Rias.
As they said their goodbyes, it was clear they didn't need words to know they'd see each other again. The alliance between them was already formed, even if not officially.
"..."
Stretching his arms, he let out a long sigh.
Upstairs, the sound of the shower could be heard. Asia must have been bathing, so there was no rush to start dinner.
Everything had become so intense all of a sudden, and Adam couldn't help but feel a bit overwhelmed. Fortunately, after all this, he'd finally get some time to relax, free from alliances and constant self-defense.
He just hoped that moment would come soon…
'Who am I kidding… I've been relaxing for years. I can't deny I've been itching for a little action again.'
In the end, he couldn't lie to himself. The hunger for battle was slowly returning, especially after killing the Fallen Angel.
Luckily, he wouldn't have to wait long to satisfy it. The Fallen Angels wouldn't leave Asia alone, and after everything, Adam obviously wouldn't let a single hair on her head be harmed.
This would end with either him going after them… or them coming after him.
And to be honest, Adam hoped it would be the first option.
Hunting was always more fun.
"..."
While Adam remained silent, with only the sound of water in the background, his eyes closed as a nearly imperceptible flutter of wings echoed outside.
Before, he wouldn't have noticed—but with his senses sharpening more and more, not only did he hear it, he also caught the scent he fondly nicknamed "pigeon stench."
Unfortunately, even if he had hoped for the first option, the world didn't seem keen on following his will. A bit annoying, but since his enemies didn't want to wait… it was fine if they came to him.
Actually, it made things easier.
With a snap of his finger, a small point of light formed in his palm. The light sword stolen from Dohnaseek—now fully attuned to him.
He hadn't had time to study why the sword now responded so perfectly to his will. His synchronization with the blade's sacred power was only growing stronger. Now, unlike earlier that day, he could summon the blade anytime he wanted.
And with a little more effort, he felt he could even alter its shape.
For now, it would be more than enough to deal with low-level Fallen Angels.
And for these little pigeons coming at him full of arrogance…
It would be more than sufficient.
His eyes alternated between the glowing point and the stairs leading to the second floor—the sound of running water still within earshot.
'...I think I can handle this before she finishes her shower.'
He thought, and rising from the couch, moved calmly to the front door.
Confident he'd be back in just a few minutes to make Asia's dinner, Adam stepped out of the house silently.
With a single goal in mind.
...
Outside, on the roof of Adam's house, two pairs of wings blended into the vast darkness of the night, barely visible under the moonlight.
It was none other than Mittelt and Kalawarna, sent by Raynare to eliminate Adam once and for all.
The two women, eyes glowing dangerously in the moonlight, remained completely silent as they observed the house's interior.
After waiting several hours for the demons to leave, they finally had their chance to approach.
Needless to say, they were particularly annoyed with Adam. They had wanted to finish everything quickly, but due to his unexpected connection with demons, it ended up taking far longer than expected.
And as for Adam himself… there was definitely something odd about him. But he didn't seem powerful enough to have taken down Dohnaseek, who had been one of the most experienced among them.
So in their eyes, it was clear: the demons had interfered. They assumed Dohnaseek encountered the demons when trying to kill Adam and was killed by them instead. As such, they didn't think much of Adam. Believing he was just a random magician, they didn't even bother to hide their presence.
"How do you want to do this? 'Cause I'm totally down for kicking down the door."
Mittelt seemed amused by the idea of storming in and brutalizing Adam.
"Let's be a little cautious. We don't want him summoning the demons."
Kalawarna, more composed, replied logically. If Adam had a way to summon demons, he definitely would if he felt threatened. Killing him before he even noticed was the best approach.
"Ugh, fine, fine. Boring." Mittelt didn't like the idea, but she still agreed. "I was hoping we could at least avenge that old idiot properly…"
"We don't have time. Let's just kill him and take the girl."
"Ugh…"
Mittelt grumbled but didn't object. In the end, she didn't want Raynare taking out her frustrations on her, so she quickly agreed.
"Alright…" Kalawarna summoned her light blade, narrowing her eyes as she felt the presence of the two targets inside the house. "Get ready—...?"
Mittelt raised an eyebrow as Kalawarna's face turned to confusion. "What is it?"
"...Where did he go?"
"...Huh?"
!
Both of their eyes widened when a chilling breeze sent shivers down their spines—their heads whipping toward two glowing blue orbs in the dark, staring at them deeply.
"What—When?"
Mittelt was the first to step back, her light spear glowing in her hand as she summoned it in haste. "How did he move like that?"
"I don't know." Kalawarna gritted her teeth, tightening her grip on her sword as she took a defensive stance. "But that's definitely not normal."
"Hey, girls."
The voice came deep and low, the hair on the back of their necks standing up as they both stepped back. Adam's glowing eyes only made his presence more intimidating.
!
"I've got dinner to make in a few minutes…" he said indifferently, a sword of light flashing in his hand—drawing stunned and confused reactions from both women, who could only look at him in fear.
"So let's get this over with."
