Chapter 233 - Chapter 232: Negotiations Failed

The forest was a living, breathing labyrinth. Giant trees, their roots thick as houses, twisted together to block out the sky, creating a perpetual twilight even at midday.

Haku moved through this gloom not as a warrior, but as a part of the wind.

He had been traveling for hours, covering miles of dense terrain, yet he hadn't encountered a single soul. The Forest of Death was vast, a green ocean designed to isolate its prey.

'It's quiet,' Haku thought, landing softly on a moss-covered root. 'Too quiet.'

His stomach gave a polite rumble. Even with the Ashura no Mon seal pulsing on his back, his body still required fuel.

He paused, his enhanced senses extending outward. He ignored the scuttling of poisonous centipedes and the distant cry of a man-eating tiger. He focused on a smaller, softer heartbeat.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

In a blur of motion, Haku threw a single senbon. There was no squeal, just a soft thud as a large forest rabbit fell over, its nervous system severed instantly.

An hour later, the smell of roasting meat wafted through a small, hidden cave Haku had found near a stream. He ate efficiently, wasting nothing.

Once the fire died down, he didn't rekindle it. The temperature in the forest dropped rapidly as true night fell, turning the humid air into a bone-chilling mist. For a normal Genin, this would be torture.

For Haku, the wielder of Ice Release, the cold was a familiar embrace.

He leaned back against the rough stone wall, closing his eyes.

'Sleep,' he commanded his body.

The Ashura no Mon seal on his back glowed faintly beneath his clothes. One of its most potent, yet subtle, effects was the optimization of recovery. While a normal human needed eight hours of sleep to fully recharge, Haku's enhanced physiology now required only one.

Sixty minutes later, Haku's eyes snapped open. He was wide awake, his chakra reserves topped off, his mind razor-sharp.

He sat there in the darkness, the silence of the cave pressing in on him.

'This is... different,' he mused, looking at his hands.

Throughout his life, he had always been a shadow. First, he was the shadow of his parents' tragedy. Then, he was Zabuza's shadow, his tool. Recently, he had become Alaric's student. He was always defined by the person he stood beside.

But here, in this damp cave, there was no Zabuza to give orders. No Alaric to warp reality with a snap of his fingers.

There was just Haku.

'Who am I when there is no one to serve?' he wondered. 'What is my ambition?'

The image of Alaric popped into his mind—the man in the crimson coat, laughing as he rewrote the laws of the world, building gazebos in swamps and flicking boogers that burned like the sun.

'He is free,' Haku realized. 'Truly free. Because he is strong enough that no one can tell him "no."'

A small chuckle escaped Haku's lips. He shook his head, standing up and brushing the dust off his pants.

'To be satisfied with myself... I must reach that height. I must become strong enough that my freedom is a fact, not a gift.'

Haku burst from the cave, accelerating instantly to full speed. He moved faster than before, his contemplation having cleared a mental block he hadn't known existed.

Ten minutes later, he heard voices.

"It's your fault we're lost!" a boy shouted.

"My fault? You're the one holding the compass upside down!" a girl shrieked back.

Haku slowed, peering through the foliage. In a small clearing below, a team of Konoha Genin was arguing loudly. They were completely exposed, their guard non-existent.

'Disappointing,' Haku thought.

He dropped.

He didn't use ninjutsu. He didn't even draw a weapon. He simply moved into their midst, a grey blur.

Chop. Chop. Kick.

Three strikes. Precise impacts to the vagus nerve. The three Konoha Genin crumpled to the ground in unison, unconscious before they hit the dirt.

Haku crouched over the team leader, patting down his vest. He pulled out a white scroll.

"Heaven," Haku muttered, pulling out his own scroll to compare. "Sheesh... a duplicate."

He sighed. The rules stated he needed an Earth scroll. He placed the stolen scroll in his pouch next to his own.

'Well, Alaric-sensei always says capitalism is the strongest jutsu,' Haku thought, a pragmatic idea forming. 'Why fight for an Earth scroll when I can just buy one?'

The Ame Team

Haku continued his patrol until he spotted the glow of a large fire.

'Amateurs,' he noted. Making a fire that big was practically inviting predators.

He approached stealthily. It was a team from Amegakure... the Hidden Rain. They were sitting on logs around the fire, laughing and drinking water from canteens.

What caught Haku's eye wasn't their lax security, but their loot. Piled carelessly on a rock next to the fire were five scrolls. 'Maybe they don't have a heaven scroll... hopefully.'

'Anyways... it's a jackpot.'

Haku didn't attack. Instead, he simply dropped from the tree, landing in the circle of light on the opposite side of the fire.

The three Ame ninja jumped up, reaching for their umbrellas and scythes.

"Who's there!?" the leader, a man with a rebreather mask, shouted.

Haku raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "I am not here to fight."

He reached into his pouch and pulled out his extra Heaven scroll.

"I have a Heaven scroll," Haku said calmly, his voice polite. "I assume you have multiple Earth scrolls. I propose a trade. My Heaven for one of your Earths. It benefits us both. We both pass without unnecessary injury."

The Ame team stared at him. Then, the leader started to laugh. It was a wet, gurgling sound.

"A trade?" The leader sneered, stepping forward. "You walk into our camp, alone, a little Konoha brat, and you want to trade?"

"It is the most efficient outcome," Haku reasoned.

"You're a fool," the Ame ninja grinned maniacally, unfurling a senbon-launching umbrella. "Why would we trade... when we can just kill you and take your scroll for free?"

Haku looked at the man, then at the other two circling behind him. He closed his eyes and let out a long, weary sigh.

"I prefer communication," Haku said softly, opening his eyes. The temperature in the clearing began to drop rapidly. "But my Sensei warned me that some people have poor business acumen."

The Ame leader roared, aiming his umbrella. "DIE!"

"Negotiations failed," Haku whispered.
